I thought that I'd bring back Jin's thread.

The idea is simple: Someone posts a set, and the next person posts a set that counters the previous posts' Pokemon. And it continues that way.

IMPORTANT: A counter, for those of you who don't know, is basically a Pokemon that can safely switch into the opposing Pokemon and take it out by itself. A check is basically a Pokemon that can defeat the Pokemon in question, but cannot safely switch into it. We're going for counters here, so make sure that your set counters the previous post and doesn't check it. You can read an in-depth explanation of checks and counters here.

    And a few rules:
    1) Pokemon in the Uber tier are not allowed to be used in this thread.
List of Pokemon in the Uber Tier
    2) Do not use Pokemon, moves, or abilities that have not been legitimately released yet
    3) Since the idea here is to counter Pokemon one-on-one, Stealth Rocks and other entry hazards will not factor into this. Explosion/Self-Destruct is a no-go as well.
    4) Completely luck based things, such as confusion damage or a 10% to burn, should not be used as an argument that your set counters the previous one.
    5) Don't slash moves on a set. You can't alter a Pokemon's moveset in the middle of a battle, and it makes countering things a bitch. How is anyone supposed to counter something when you have a ton of coverage slashed in? You also cannot write less than 4 moves.

And a damage calculator if you need it: http://pokemonshowdown.com/damagecalc/

Please make sure that your set actually counters the previous one.

So I'll start the thread with this:

    445.png

    -Garchomp w/Focus Sash
    Nature: Jolly
    Ability: Rough Skin
    EVs: 252 Attack, 252 Speed, 4 Sp.Defense
Moves: Dragon Claw, Swords Dance, Earthquake, Stone Edge

    Someone counter that ♥♥♥♥.

  • Whoops, sorry I'm not too familiar with Smogon's tier lists heheh.

    Countering hippowdon though-

    Tangrowth with rocky helmet
    Nature: impish
    Ability: Chlorophyll
    EV's: 252 Def, 252 Atk 4 Sp Def
Moves: Power Whip, Sleep Powder, Rock Slide, Knock Off

EV spread isn't efficient. Maxing out HP takes priority first before maxing out a defensive stat as a general rule of thumb. Regenerator is also the preferred the ability for Tangrowth.

    Anyway:

    Escavalier:
    589.gif

    -Megahorn
    -Iron Head
    -Drill Run
    -Knock Off
    Nature: Adamant
    EVs: 248 HP/252 Atk/8 SDef
    Item: Assault Vest
    Ability: Overcoat

Escavalier doesn't fear Sleep Powder thanks to Overcoat; it also takes a pittance from Tangrowth's moves and strikes back with a super effective Megahorn.

    item: choice band
    Evs: 252 atk, 252 speed, 4 hp

easily ko's the Escavalier with a choice banded flare blitz being four times weak to
    fire.

Unnnnnless, all I'm thinking about is tanking those ice fangs? A defense investment will decrease the % health taken from said ice fang more than maxing HP out. And what's the point of regenerator if it's a 1 v 1 battle just because it's the preferred ability? Are we copy and pasting sets from Smogon that counter one another or are we coming up with sets of our own design that counter one another? Sorry if this comes across as salty, but I was under the impression the point of the game was to come up with something on our own that counters the previous post.

    Countering arcanine-

    Bisharp
    Ability: Defiant
    Nature: Adamant
    Item: Focus Sash
    EVs: 252 HP 252 Atk 4 Speed
Moves: Protect, Metal burst, Sucker Punch, Night Slash
Gain +1 attack immediately from intimidate. Protect once, scout arcanine's choice locked move. Close combat or flare blitz means a ohko from metal burst next turn, Wild Charge means it can take out Arcanine with sucker punch, Extreme speed won't really bother bisharp and let him KO with night slash.

This is why maxing out HP before a defensive stat is important:
    252+ Atk Mold Breaker Mega Gyarados Ice Fang vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tangrowth: 112-132 (27.7 - 32.6%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

    252+ Atk Mold Breaker Mega Gyarados Ice Fang vs. 0 HP / 252+ Def Tangrowth: 112-132 (32.8 - 38.7%) -- 98.8% chance to 3HKO

Bisharp is NOT a counter to Arcanine in any way. It's weak to Close Combat and Flare Blitz, and it won't like switching in to any of those. Here's a definition of a counter:
    The Smog Issue 32 said:
Pokémon A counters Pokémon B if Pokémon A can manually switch into Pokémon B and still win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.

Intimidate only works if Arcanine itself switches in to battle, unless it's a double-switch.

Creative sets are fine, but only as long as the moves listed are viable enough to deal with opposing threats. Your set isn't that viable because Metal Burst can be predicted and set up on. Knock Off > Night Slash for the item-removing utility.

    Anyway, countering Arcanine:

    Swampert:
    260.gif

    -Waterfall
    -Earthquake
    -Ice Punch
    -Superpower
    Nature: Adamant
    EVs: 172 HP/252 Atk/84 Spe
    Item: Choice Band
    Ability: Torrent

Swampert avoids the 2HKO from Close Combat and retaliates with Waterfall or Earthquake.
