Ooh. They don't really mention it, but Kirito using a virtually weightless lightsaber instead of the strength-based weapons (read: swords with weight behind them) he's used to seems to make an actual difference in this particular fight. So far it's been shrugged off even though it'd be quite a big deal in a real scenario, but here it's allowing the opponent (who's way cooler than Kirito) to very successfully use a light but hardy weapon against him; had GGO allowed for heavy melee weapons, and had our harem protagonist used one, he could've easily overpowered his foe who wouldn't be able to properly parry his blows. Instead, as the lightsaber blade has no weight (horrible for a sword, it relies completely on its ability to cut which makes it useless against harder materials), the foe parries it with ease. I don't know if the author actually thought of this, but if he did I'm giving him credit. Most anime writers certainly don't think very far on these subjects.

Now I'm just sad because the sword the bad guy used in SAO looked like a kriegsmesser. That's a way cooler weapon than what most people in this show see using. Would've liked to see it in action.

I did it guys. I'm enjoying (certain moments of) SAO!

That's because SAO's creator loves games n' stuff. I don't know if he knows about them, so much, as there are some "errs" and "aahs" in various concepts, but it pretty much teems off the creator that he gets a hard on writing SAO and just has a general passion for video games. It's something I can respect, the guy really loves his work.

Many games seem to categorise generic one-handed swords as light weapons for whatever reason, so forgive me if I don't give video games (especially Japanese ones, where the more sharp edges = better) much respect in terms of realism. :P

Then again if reality was mirrored perfectly dual wielding would be a pretty much worthless ability, so Kirito wouldn't be as much of a special snowflake. Armour also wouldn't be made of butter, people would be holding their sword blades for better precision a lot, which would look ridiculous in a video game, and there would be walls of pikemen and people throwing rocks everywhere.

The whole point of medieval swords was to be heavy so you would have actual power behind your cuts, while in films and games they often seem portrayed as light, magically sharp things. Saying they're light weapons puts them in the same category as daggers or, I don't know, blowdarts :P

It's mostly a thing of principle I guess. Medium would be excellent.

Well you also have to consider that a lot of games that use this terminology is generally fantasy (since quite a number of Fantasy games take from Medieval weaponry, cultures, and architecture). Best thing about these games are that they can really get away from anything not because of magic, but because the people can be "inherently stronger" or the metals "the same but lighter" because it's fantasy and hey, it's their world.

Those that are based in reality generally categorize things such as daggers as their own category of "knives" and, if they don't, they're Light weaponry along with the cutlass, rapiers, and short swords. Long Swords are gray areas, and Broadswords grayer, as in different games they can be One or Two handed, depending, but generally this is where we'll get into Medium Weaponry. Ultimately, though, if the majority of the weapons in a game are going to be Classic Medieval, games will often make their lighter "medium" swords "Light" because it's more efficient for categorization.

Slap female armor on men and everyone explodes over how "inappropriate" FF15 is.

Should have just had female playable characters.

873

Nah, I'm kidding, I don't believe in sacrificing story direction for forced diversity over natural diversity. That said, I do wish the game had playable female characters. I hope it has enough female characters period, really, because so far there's...what, 1? 2?

As for female armor on the guys, sounds fine to me. Generally I like it when games allow cross-gender clothing, you can get some nice aesthetic results from it.

This is clearly just Japan's nationalism rearing it's head again in some form.

Suppose Japs making katanas was understandable when they didn't have the materials that Europeans did, including that used for the plate armour. Katana were mostly only good for murdering unarmed peasants.

Could somebody please explain this symbolism please, it is too subtle for me.
Spoiler:

Also the op is pretty deep as well. Ikuhara finds a way.

872

Yeah, I was wary of that tag when I first saw it. The same way I was wary when I saw that KyoAni were animating a ''dark fantasy'' in Kyoukai no Kanata.

First ep was pretty much what I was expecting, it was attention grabbing and without giving much away there were certainly hints. There was plenty of imagery, some more subtle than other, some which will have just been thrown in for the hell of it. It was certainly more hectic than the first episode of Penguindrum, suppose that'll be down to it running for fewer episodes. Guess that'll also be why the bear court scene was far more grounded than SEIZON SENRYAKUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU.

Can't wait for the reveal that thw walls are made out of bears.
Spoiler:

Anyway, yeah, Ikuhara is yet to put a foot wrong with his toons so I'm remaining expectant. He also seems like a pretty cool dude in interviews.
