I'm not sure where to post this, but I've started recording footage from DS & 3DS Pokemon games, and I really don't know what if I should keep recording both screens of USUM because I don't **think** the game uses both screens meaningfully that often? (For the purposes of not having to repeat myself, "using both screens meaningfully" is short hand for "using both screens in a way that viewers watching the footage on YouTube need both screens" as opposed to using the bottom screen for selecting the moves in battle, and for Rotom Dex's comments in the overworld)

Putting them side-by-side takes up more of the screen, but then the side bars are top & bottom bars, so there's not much I can do with that compared to having the entire left or right side to put my self-insert author icons as well as stats from Bulbapedia (eg, what base stats does this mon have, what does an "Adamant" nature do, what is this move's in-game description, what is the Fighting-type super effective against). If we were to expand this discussion to DS games, the DS is very low-res, so the extra pixels from doing it side by side probably won't matter compared to having extra info or even pretty graphics on the sides.

I was actually wondering if anyone knew what scenes in USUM actually use both screens meaningfully. I know in BW, there's cutscenes with the Xtransceiver where it'd probably be best to record both screens for the viewer of a YouTube video. I hope I don't get into trouble for posting this discussion.

Cannot think of too many things on the bottom screen in Ultra Sun/Moon. Skimmed through a Let's Play to look for stuff.
    • Using Pokemon Refresh.
    • Pokedex entries.
    • Your party during battle. Views being told the entire party is hurt versus seeing red health bars on everyone to be sufficiently different, at least.
    • Poke Pelago. Shows the actual island on the bottom screen.
    • Current stat stages during battle (if you tap on the screen, at least).

Shows all the cutscenes, Mantine Surf, Ultra Ride, and Poke Finder stuff on the top screen. Goes through the credits on both screens. Does not really need to display both, however.

Depending on what you're using for recording, you might be able to use a 2:1 or 3:1 screen ratio so that the main screen uses most of the space, which would reduce the amount of blank space in your recording, for example:
(Note that that's a straight screen recording from MelonDS, it has not been edited in any video software)

Some emulators also have screen layouts that insert the less important screen inside the main screen, in one of the corners. I personally like to be able to see the moves and other stuff when I watch other people's playthroughs, but that's up to personal preferences and what screen layout options are available to you.

I went back to the emulator, and I actually didn't know "large screen" meant "top screen is big, and touch screen is in the corner" until now. I guess I thought it meant "only the top screen" since the top screen is larger or... something? I don't remember what I was thinking last night, but I'm glad I did a double check because this looks a lot nicer. I'm not entirely sure this is how the startup screen is supposed to look since I didn't plug in the laptop's AC adapter because I just wanted to quickly check it. It might be more pixelated than if I had my laptop charging.

(Also, I'm not sure I'm allowed to drop the name of this emulator since Nintendo issued a takedown of the software, and the company behind it completely caved into all demands. Please don't ban me, homie.)

You can mention it. The company that developed Citra was sued over a different emulator, a Switch emulator called Yuzu, and completely disbanded as part of a settlement. Citra itself was released under an open source license and Nintendo has not taken any attempt to censor any forks of it developed by other programmers unaffiliated with the Yuzu team. (In contrast, Nintendo did shut down several forks of Yuzu.)

I thought both emulators (including the forks you're talking about) were being consistently taken down as part of the settlement with Nintendo. I'm glad to be wrong.

Also, to be clear, I have not touched the Yuzu emulator. I have no experience with it, so I have no intent to post about it on these forums.

If I may continue the discussion with you, Ms. Explorer of Time, um, I kind of already recorded the early stuff (from the beginning to the trainer's school) with the emulator's "top and bottom" setting for the screens, and I'm really hoping whatever viewers I have next year in October (Ghost-type, ghost stories, Halloween) will tolerate it for a bit because I do not want to redo everything after getting super lucky with an Adamant Rowlet second try.
