Dual Type and/or Themed Gyms: Opinions and what yours would be?

I thought I would make this thread out of curiosity.

1. What are your thoughts/opinions on dual type gyms?
2. What are your thoughts on themed gyms with either three types or no type consistencies?
3. What would your dual type or themed gym be? (Choose whichever you like more or both!)

Me:

1. I like the idea of dual type gyms and dual type teams. One type is only so interesting in terms of variety, and I think two types adds more personality. Maybe not in a mainstream game, but some sort of spinoff.

2. I am not sure about themed gyms. Sure, an eeveelution themed one would make sense, but beyond that I think its a little too against the point of the concept of gyms.

3. I would have a psychic/poison (my two favorite types) gym based on a roman forum. Trainers would go through a gauntlet of questions about their beliefs and ideologies, and would have to fight those who disagree with them.

As for my gym battle, it would be a doubles battle with me having a team of six. I don't normally like having teams of six for gym battles, but it seems appropriate for a dual type gym. The double battle helps alleviate the length of fighting a six pokemon gym team and also goes well with a roman discourse/debate theme.

As for me, I am honestly open to anything bar monotype at this point, monotype gyms are becoming a bit predictable and would be nice to shake it up with more types or even a theme for gyms. My gym will probs be a mix of Dragon and Dark in single battles format tho.

I love this idea! Dual gyms or even gyms with no one type focus seems really fun, and something I wish we could see included. Personal favorites are fairy and ice, electric and fire, and grass and ghost! Just something super cool about those combos.

I'd be normal and electric, with my normals having a very varied moveset to throw opponents off track. :D

I like the idea because it adds variety, but I'd like to see this taken further with no type consistencies. Actual themes and gimmicks in place would be ideal. Like Norman's gym in Hoenn. "This trainer likes to use X Attacks.", or "This trainer likes to use full restores". I would like to see full gym leaders utilizing these themes.

I would like to host a Water/Fairy themed gym, with primarina as an ace.

I love the idea of having gimmicks or themes instead of types for gyms, and I feel like that's where we're heading. We already saw the dragon gym in Sword/Shield that had weather as a gimmick, and I'd be hyped to see more.

Maybe use it as a taster of some competitive styles of play like having a gym built around trick room, or a super tanky team based on using moves like Power trick and Body Press.

I would be a Water and Ground gym. Yes, I know Grass types can wreck me but hey, I have some counters for those. My gym would be Double Battle style and I will 1st send out Politoed and Pelipper, both with Drizzle. Politoed has access to Earth Power and Ice Beam to counter Grass and Electric. Pelliper has Hurricane and Tailwind to help my team against Grass types both offensively and to have speed control. I would have a Mega Swampert to make use of Swift Swim and have Politoed beside it to use Helping Hand. I would also use Seismitoad for a pseudo Swift Swim Swampert.

i think it would be neat, and provide more of a challenge as well. usually the pokemon that mess me up are the ones with dual typing bc it opens them up to more possibilities in their movesets and when you open the door more to make the entire gym dual type, that can get even more challenging. like if it were me, i'd have a fairy/fire gym. so that leads to like...using houndoom (fire/dark), klefki (fairy/steel), etc which brings in more type combinations that would be fun to face against.

Oooh, I am so glad you asked this question. I have much to tell. I'm working on a fictional game, and I have a dual type Gym and a themed Elite Four member. I'll try to confine my descriptions to only the most interesting parts, or the parts that relate directly to the theme.


The third Gym is a Fire/Ice type Gym, in a town high on a mountain. To get there from a snowy town lower on the mountain, you have to travel first through an ice cave, then a volcanic fire cave; at the intersection between them is an area with hot springs where you can heal, but can't switch your party. The fire cave exits directly into the Gym town, no route inbetween, so the town has the volcanic caves right beneath them and the blowing snow above them.

Among the new Pokemon introduced in this area is a regional variant of Onix, which is Rock/Fire type, lives in volcanic mountains, and burrows through the ground by melting the stone in front of it. Its evolution, Meltix, is Fire/Ice type and is the Gym leader's ace; it is somewhat inspired by the Ice Worms from Subnautica: Below Zero. It has a Fire type drill/bore attack that is super effective against Rock types; much later it learns a stronger version of this move that also breaks through Reflect and Light Screen. It has a binding move that has a small chance to either burn or freeze the target each time it deals recurring damage, and it has an Ability that similarly can either burn or freeze on contact.

One of her other Pokemon is an Ice/Rock type mountain sheep Pokemon with high defenses and HP. It uses Defense Curl to power up Ice Ball, and to raise its defenses further to tank hits while hoping to freeze you with an Ability that can freeze on contact. Its Rock typing also gives it coverage against Fire types.

Her last Pokemon is a Fire type lizard that eats snow and can regurgitate the water and mud from it. It has a Water type move for coverage against Rock and Ground types, and for Water types it has a biting attack that heals it when used on a Water or Ice type. This one has some interesting evolutions, but that's a story for another time. 😉

The Gym leader herself is kind of like if Flannery were a hot snowboarder girl; she wears a parka or snowboard jacket open over a crop top, has long bright red hair, and is probably in her early 20s or late teens like Flannery. She's a sport enthusiast, but I won't go into that as it's a bit off topic.


The final Elite Four member is a "sound" Pokemon specialist. He has Exploud, Noivern, Pyroar, one of two version exclusive Pokemon that are a Normal/Bug type based on the Beatles and a Normal/Rock type based on the Rolling Stones, and his ace is Toxtricity. Noivern has a new signature move inspired by how its Pokedex entries say that it locates its opponents with echolocation before moving in for the kill, and how its sound waves can shatter boulders; the move is a Flying type echolocation-themed attack that is super effective against Rock types, and causes the next attack to always hit as though it had used Mind Reader or Lock On. All of his Pokemon are holding a Throat Spray, except for Toxtricity which is holding a Sitrus Berry to activate Belch. (Belch is not a sound-based move, but of Toxtricity's Poison type attacks it's the one that I felt was the most appropriate for this fight.) He is a VERY OUTSPOKEN INDIVIDUAL WITH NO INDOOR VOICE, and his name is Dilon or Dillon; kudos if you know what that's a reference to. 😁

For his rematch team, I'm undecided whether his sixth Pokemon should be the other of the Beatles/Stones pair, or Kommo-o.

genuinely surprised game freak doesn't already gun for dual-type gyms, tbh. i think it'd be an interesting and fun idea!

for me personally, i'd go for grass/ice or grass/psychic. bit of a tossup being either or, but probably leaning towards the latter.

1. Would be okay with them. Likes monotype gyms still, however. Manages to put up a fight (sometimes), despite often being at a type disadvantage. Makes that type's Pokemon look strong.
2. Depends on what makes the gym unique. Must stand out and be memorable.
3.
- Dual Type Gym: Fire/Grass with double battles. Prepare for sun strategies.
- Gimmick Gym: Trick Room. Perhaps a "no switching" gym instead.
- Themed: Breeder Gym. Features low levels. Compensates by breeding to the nines.
