Focus Meter System for v20.1
A battle system mod that allows you to control traditionally RNG-based mechanics through building a meter instead.
![]()
![]()
Overview
Do you dislike the heavy reliance on RNG in Pokemon battles? Looking to add a new strategic edge to your battles? Then this plugin may be just what you're looking for!
This plugin aims to overhaul the bulk of RNG-based mechanics present in Pokemon battles with a new "Focus" mechanic that removes a lot of what makes Pokemon battles often feel cheap and unpredictable, and replaces it with something that deepens the gameplay with more meaningful decision making. In particular, the Critical Hit system, Accuracy/Evasion stats, and Additional Effect chance of moves as they currently exist in the base game are radically changed to be more fair, yet still retain the fun and flavor that have made them a mainstay in the series. Gone are the days of a rogue critical hit ruining your entire strategy, relying on dice rolls as your opponent stalls you out with Evasion spam, or feeling completely cheated because of a random Ice Beam freezing you.
Instead of all of these mechanics being completely dependent on random chance, each Pokemon may now build their "Focus" in battle, which is represented as a meter. Once the meter is full, they can harness this Focus to ensure that these RNG-dependent mechanics will instead trigger when you want them to. For example, instead of critical hits having a random chance of happening with each attack, critical hits will instead ONLY happen if a Pokemon with a full focus meter spends this meter to deal critical damage. The type of effect using your focus meter will have can be set on each individual Pokemon, allowing you to use many different sorts of strategies utilizing the focus meter.
Note however, that this plugin does not eliminate all RNG altogether. Random chance is deeply built into the battle system and part of what makes battles exciting. The goal here is to simply mitigate the more egregious examples of obnoxious RNG into an improved system that can be utilized in battle for powerful combos.
Plugin Features

Installation
Spoiler:
- Download and install the latest version of the Essentials Deluxe plugin. To reiterate, this is required for this plugin to work.
- Download this plugin using the link provided and extract its contents to your root Essentials folder.
- Use the Settings file located in this plugin's folder to adjust things to your liking.
- IMPORTANT: If you plan on using other plugins that replaces or overwrites your entire Items, Moves, or Abilities PBS files, such as the Gen 9 Pack, then you must install this plugin AFTER installing those first. If you install this one first, then any PBS changes applied by this plugin will be overwritten the second those plugins are installed, thus rendering certain features of this plugin useless. Please keep that in mind before claiming that this plugin doesn't work.

What is Focus?Spoiler:![]()
Focus is represented as a meter that displays on each Pokemon's databox in battle. As battles play out, each Pokemon will slowly build their Focus, which fills this meter. Once the meter is full, the Pokemon may harness this built up focus to dodge attacks, ensure their move lands, or guarantee a critical hit or move effect. Instead of these outcomes always happening at random, you can now control when to activate them by building a Pokemon's focus meter and choosing to activate them at the appropriate time. However, your focus meter will reset if it isn't used within three turns of filling it, so you can't hold on to it indefinitely.
Focus Styles
![]()
There are a variety of effects you may trigger with focus. The type of effect that each Pokemon may utilize with their focus depends on each individual Pokemon's Focus Style. A Focus Style designates how the Pokemon's focus is specialized, and each Pokemon's current style is displayed in their Summary. There are six varieties of Focus Styles, each outlined in detail below:
- Accuracy Style
Spoiler:The Accuracy Focus Style is specialized in perfecting the Pokemon's aim. When fully focused in this style, the Pokemon may ready a "Focused Shot" to ensure its selected move will land no matter what.
Focused Shot
![]()
Lucario strikes Ivysaur with perfect accuracy by spending its charged meter to deliver a Focused Shot. The opposing Ivysaur also becomes staggered due to Lucario using Focused Shot in conjunction with a damaging move.
A Focused Shot makes it so that the user's next move is guaranteed to hit its target, regardless of the move's base Accuracy or other effects in play that would lessen the chance of the move hitting. A Focused Shot cannot be dodged, but it may still be negated or avoided by the effects of moves such as Protect, or moves that make them invulnerable. A Focused Shot also grants the user's selected move the ability to ignore the opponent's attempt at misdirecting the attack through moves such as Follow Me or Rage Powder.
If the move used with Focused Shot is a damaging move, this will have the additional effect of causing the targeted Pokemon to stagger when struck. A staggered Pokemon temporarily loses its ability to focus, and will be unable to use their own focus against you for up to four turns. This additional effect provides some defensive utility on top of its obvious offensive merits, making the Accuracy style a very well-rounded style that can be adapted to many different Pokemon and strategies. The effects of a Focused Shot are completely shut down, however, by opponents utilizing the Passive Focus Style. Staggering these opponents before they can utilize their focus should be a priority for users of this style.
If the user activates a Focused Shot while selecting a move that would gain no benefit from it, such as a self-targeting move, or a move that is already incapable of missing, then the Focused Shot will fail to activate, and the user's meter will remain full to be used again the following turn. Focused Shot will also fail to activate if the user fails to act the turn it is used due to effects such as paralysis or confusion, or if the user is incapable of acting due to being asleep or frozen. However, if Focused Shot is activated, but the user's attack fails to connect for some reason (forced misses, immunities, etc), the meter is still consumed even though the user couldn't land its attack.
Building Focus
![]()
![]()
Left: Lucario gains a large percentage of meter using Focus Blast, due to it being an inaccurate move.
Right: Lucario's focus meter is fully charged due to missing its attack.
Users of this Focus Style may build their focus meter by using moves in battle that have the potential to miss. This means that any move that has an Accuracy stat will increase your meter. Moves that don't rely on accuracy at all - such as Aura Sphere or Aerial Ace - will not fill this meter. Using moves with lower accuracy will fill this meter quicker, relative to how much lower the move's Accuracy is from 100. So a move like Zap Cannon, which has 50 Accuracy, will fill your meter up a lot quicker than a move that has 100 Accuracy. You won't gain any meter from moves if targeting partner Pokemon, only opposing Pokemon. If the user's selected move misses the target, the user's focus meter will instantly fill to full. However, if the user's move has no effect on the target due to immunities, then no meter is gained at all. You won't gain any meter while Asleep or Frozen, even if you still managed to attack while in those states.
Whenever the user's Accuracy stat is increased, it will also gain a small amount of additional meter.
Move Exceptions
The following moves do not interact with this Focus Style at all, despite meeting the requirements in some cases. This means that these moves will not build any meter, nor will they be able to utilize the bonuses of a Focused Shot.
- Pursuit
- Counter, Mirror Coat, Metal Burst
- Future Sight, Doom Desire (moves with delayed damage)
- Fissure, Sheer Cold, Guillotine, etc. (OHKO moves)
- Aerial Ace, Aura Sphere, etc. (moves that don't rely on accuracy)
In addition, here are all of the affects that may alter the rate at which you may gain focus in this style:
Spoiler:Conditions that will boost Focus gains:
- Increases to the user's Accuracy stat will increase the base Focus gained, relative to the number of boosts.
- Decreases to the target's Evasion stat will increase the base Focus gained, relative to the number of drops.
- If the target is under the Foresight/Miracle Eye effects, the base Focus gained is increased.
- Base Focus gained is multiplied by the number of Accuracy-boosting modifiers in play, which include:
- The user's Compound Eyes Ability.
- The user's or ally's Victory Star Ability.
- The user's Wide Lens hold item.
- The user's Zoom Lens hold item.
- The Gravity field condition.
- If the user's move is specifically Focus Blast, the base Focus gained is multiplied by 1.3.
- Total Focus gained is doubled when under the effects of Focus Energy.
Conditions that will reduce Focus gains:
- Base Focus gained is multiplied by the number of Accuracy-reducing modifiers in play, which include:
- The user's Hustle Ability.
- The target's Bright Powder hold item.
- The target's Lax Incense hold item.
- The Fog weather condition.
- Total Focus gained is halved if the target was behind a Substitute.
- Total Focus gained is quartered if the target is under the effects of Protect.
- Evasion Style
Spoiler:The Evasion Focus Style is specialized in perfecting the Pokemon's evasiveness. When fully focused in this style, the Pokemon may ready a "Focused Dodge" to predict all incoming attacks and evade them with ease.
Focused Dodge
![]()
The opposing Froslass spends its charged meter to perform a Focused Dodge, allowing it to evade Scyther's attack this turn. Successfully dodging in this way boosts the user's Evasion.
A Focused Dodge makes it so that the user will evade all attacks that target it on the turn it is used. This only works on moves that have a base Accuracy stat, so moves such as Aura Sphere or Aerial Ace which do not rely on Accuracy at all can still bypass a Focused Dodge. This includes moves that are affected by the No Guard ability. Furthermore, this effect is hard-countered by the effects of an opponent's Focused Shot, which cannot be dodged by this effect. However, each attack the user avoids due to a Focused Dodge will increase the user's Evasion stat, which will allow its focus to charge more quickly, allowing it to dodge more often. This is a highly defensive style of focus, and is perfect for frail species who want to take as few hits as possible. Using this style in conjunction with other defensive tools such as a Focus Sash can greatly increase a fragile Pokemon's survivability.
A Focused Dodge will fail to activate if the user is incapable of acting due to being asleep or frozen. If the user activated a Focused Dodge, but is unable to act this turn due to an effect such as paralysis or confusion, the user will still be able to dodge attacks. However, if Focused Dodge is activated but the user fails to dodge any attacks this turn (the user wasn't targeted by anyone, for example), the meter is still consumed regardless. A Focused Dodge will not activate on the same turn the user attempts to Baton Pass.
Building Focus
![]()
![]()
Left: Froslass uses Double Team to boost its Evasion, which slightly increases its meter. Its meter also increases after being attacked.
Right: Scyther deals a critical hit to the opposing Froslass, which instantly fills up Froslass' meter due to it being in the Evasion style.
Users of this Focus Style will build their focus meter whenever they are targeted by an attack that they have the potential to dodge. This means that any move that has an Accuracy stat that targets the user will increase the user's meter. Moves that don't rely on accuracy at all - such as Aura Sphere or Aerial Ace - will not fill this meter. Being targeted with moves that have low accuracy will fill this meter quicker, relative to how much lower the move's Accuracy is from 100. So being targeted by a move like Zap Cannon, which has 50 Accuracy, will fill your meter up a lot quicker than being targeted by a move that has 100 Accuracy. You won't gain any meter if targeted by a partner Pokemon, only opposing Pokemon. The user will gain 30% more meter than usual when its HP is below half. If the user is struck with a critical hit, its meter will be fully charged. You won't gain any meter while Asleep or Frozen.
Whenever the user's Evasion stat is increased, it will also gain a small amount of additional meter.
In addition, here are all of the affects that may alter the rate at which you may gain focus in this style:
Spoiler:Conditions that will boost Focus gains:
- Increases to the user's Evasion stat will increase the base Focus gained, relative to the number of boosts.
- Decreases to the attacker's Accuracy stat will increase the base Focus gained, relative to the number of drops.
- Base Focus gained is increased if the user is holding Bright Powder or Lax Incense.
- Base Focus gained is multiplied by the number of Evasion-boosting modifiers in play, which include:
- The user's Sand Veil Ability while Sandstorm is in play.
- The user's Snow Cloak Ability while Hail is in play.
- Total Focus gained is doubled when under the effects of Focus Energy.
Conditions that will reduce Focus gains:
- Total Focus gained is halved if the target is under the Foresight/Miracle Eye effects.
- Total Focus gained is halved if the user was behind a Substitute, or under the effects of Protect when struck.
- Critical Hit Style
Spoiler:The Critical Hit Style is specialized in striking at the enemy's weak points, landing deadly blows that deal heavy damage. When fully focused in this style, the Pokemon may ready a "Focused Strike" to ensure it lands a critical hit with its selected move.
Focused Strike
![]()
![]()
Left: Absol spends its charged meter to deliver a Focused Strike, ensuring a critical hit and bypassing the opposing Wartortle's raised Defenses.
Right: Absol is able to use a Focused Strike to negate the effects of the opposing Clefable's Focused Guard.
A Focused Strike makes it so that the user's next move is guaranteed to critically hit. Outside of niche moves, such as Storm Throw or Frost Breath that always deal critical hits as part of their move effect, a Focused Strike is now the only way that a move may deal critical hits. This is an offensive style of focus, and is perfect for heavy damage dealers meant to break down the opponent's walls. This style can be a bit reckless, however, as it is easily shut down by timely dodges by opponents utilizing the Evasion Focus Style, or can be stopped in its tracks by the staggering effect of opponents utilizing the Accuracy Focus Style. However, this style completely counters the effects of the Passive Focus Style, which is generally difficult for the other styles to deal with.
If the user activates a Focused Strike while selecting a move that would gain no effect from it, such as a status move, or a move that is incapable of dealing a critical hit for some reason, then the Focused Strike will fail to activate and the user's meter will remain full to be used again the following turn. Focused Strike will also fail to activate if the user fails to act the turn it is used due to effects such as paralysis or confusion, or if the user is incapable of acting due to being asleep or frozen. However, if Focused Strike is activated but the user's attack fails to connect for some reason (misses, immunities, etc), then the meter is still consumed even though the user couldn't land its attack. You will still be able to activate a Focused Strike if the target has an effect in play that prevents critical hits, such as the Battle Armor ability, or the Lucky Chant effect, however, the critical hit will be negated, and the Focused Strike will be wasted.
Building Focus
![]()
Absol stacks the effects of Super Luck, Razor Claw, and a high-crit move to build a large portion of meter quickly.
Users of this Focus Style will build their focus meter whenever they target an opponent with a damage-dealing move. This means any move that has a Base Power will increase the user's meter. Status move won't increase the user's meter at all, unless the effect of the move calls another move that does deal damage. If the user's selected move is a physical move and the target has raised its Defense stat a number of stages, or has boosted defenses due to the effect of Reflect, then the amount of focus gained from this attack increases. The same is true when the selected move is a special move, and the target has raised its Sp. Def stat, or is under the effect of Light Screen. If the target is under the effect of Aurora Veil or Focused Guard, then the amount of focus gained is increased regardless of which category of move was used. No meter is gained at all, however, if the user's attack missed, or was ineffective due to a type immunity. You won't gain any meter from moves if targeting partner Pokemon, only opposing Pokemon. You won't gain any meter while Asleep or Frozen, even if you still managed to attack while in those states.
Move Exceptions
The following moves do not interact with this Focus Style at all, despite meeting the requirements in some cases. This means that these moves will not build any meter, nor will they be able to utilize the bonuses of a Focused Strike.
- Endeavor
- Psywave
- Sonic Boom, Dragon Rage, etc. (fixed damage moves)
- Night Shade, Seismic Toss, etc. (moves with fixed damage based on level)
- Counter, Mirror Coat, Metal Burst
- Future Sight, Doom Desire (moves with delayed damage)
- Fissure, Sheer Cold, Guillotine, etc. (OHKO moves)
- Frost Breath, Storm Throw, etc. (moves that already guarantee crit as an effect)
- All status moves
In addition, here are all of the affects that may alter the rate at which you may gain focus in this style:
Spoiler:Conditions that will boost Focus gains:
- If the user's Critical hit ratio was boosted, such as with a Dire Hit, Focus gained will increase relative to the number of boosts.
- If the target is under the Foresight/Miracle Eye effects, the base Focus gained is doubled.
- Base Focus gained is multiplied by the number of Critical hit ratio-boosting modifiers in play, which include:
- The user's Super Luck Ability.
- The user's Razor Claw hold item.
- The user's Scope Lens hold item.
- Chansey's Lucky Punch hold item.
- Farfetch'd/Sirfetch'd's Leek hold item.
- Selected moves with a high critical-hit ratio effect (negated if the user has Sheer Force).
- The user is a Shadow Pokemon and in Hyper Mode.
- Total Focus gained is doubled when under the effects of Focus Energy.
Conditions that will reduce Focus gains:
- Total Focus gained is halved if the target was behind a Substitute.
- Total Focus gained is quartered if the target was under the effects of Protect.
- Potency Style
Spoiler:The Potency Style is specialized in maximizing the effectiveness of the user's moves. When fully focused in this style, the Pokemon may ready a "Focused Effect" to ensure the activation of any additional effects that their moves have with 100% consistency.
Focused Effect
![]()
![]()
Left: Muk spends its charged up meter to deliver a Focused Effect, ensuring the added effect of its selected move activates. The foe's focus also becomes impaired due to Muk using Focused Effect in conjunction with a damaging move.
Right: Muk stacks a variety of effects and uses a Focused Effect, delivering a devastating combo that triggers the effects of its selected move, held item, and ability in unison.
A Focused Effect makes it so that any additional effects that the user's selected move has is now guaranteed to always trigger, if possible. This is now the only way for additional effects to trigger, in the same way that a Focused Strike is now the only way that critical hits may trigger. However, moves that already have a 100% added effect chance are unaffected by this, and will still trigger their effects as they normally would. A Focused Effect only triggers on moves that have a chance at triggering their effects, such as the 30% burn chance on Scald.
In addition, this will also ensure the triggering of the effects of certain Abilities and Hold Items, such as the Stench and Poison Touch abilities, or the Quick Claw and King's Rock held items. Basically, any effect that has a chance of triggering due to the user's own actions are now guaranteed to trigger when using a Focused Effect, and will no longer randomly trigger otherwise. If the user's selected move is a damaging move, the user's Focused Effect will also have a secondary effect of impairing the target's focus, which lessens the amount of focus they will gain overall. This effect lasts as long as that Pokemon is on the battlefield. This secondary effect provides some additional utility to this style so that it may still be worth using in situations where its primary effect may be of no use, or unavailable.
If the user activates a Focused Effect while selecting a move that would gain no benefit from it, such as a move with no added effect, then the Focused Effect will fail to activate, and the user's meter will remain full to be used again the following turn. Focused Effect will also fail to activate if the user fails to act the turn it is used due to effects such as paralysis or confusion, or if the user is incapable of acting due to being asleep or frozen. However, if Focused Effect is activated but the user's attack fails to connect for some reason (misses, immunities, etc), the meter is still consumed even though the user couldn't land its attack. If the target has the ability Shield Dust, this will negate any added effects of moves from triggering, as well as any effects from held items or abilities that would affect the target (King's Rock, Poison Touch, etc). However, any item effects that are specifically applied to the user instead of the target (such as the priority bonus granted by Quick Claw) will not be negated. If the Focused Effect user has the Sheer Force ability, then the added effects of their moves will be negated, but added effects triggered by held items (Quick Claw, King's Rock, etc) will not be negated.
Building Focus
![]()
A comparison of the amount of meter built between the moves Thunderbolt and Charge Beam. The higher the move's added effect chance, the more meter that move will build.
Users of this Focus Style will build their focus meter whenever they select a move that would normally have a chance of triggering an additional effect. This means any move that has an Additional Effect chance. Moves that already have a 100% chance of triggering their additional effect do not count, and will not build any meter. Using moves that have a high effect chance will fill this meter quicker, meaning a move such as Charge Beam, which has a 70% chance of an added effect, will build much more meter compared to a move like Thunderbolt, which only has a 10% chance of an added effect.
However, if the user has any move in their moveset that has the specific effect of inflicting the Freeze status (Ice Beam, Blizzard, etc.) while the user is NOT an Ice-type, then only the base amount of focus will be gained by any move they use. So if a non-Ice type Pokemon uses Charge Beam while also knowing the move Ice Beam for example, then Charge Beam will increase the focus meter as if it only has a 10% effect chance, rather than 70%. This prevents the possibility of easily spamming the overpowered Freeze status by simply filling up your focus meter with other moves that quickly fill meter and then spending that meter on a freeze move. This simultaneously buffs Ice-type Pokemon, since they don't suffer from this meter restriction with freeze moves, which gives them much more valuable utility since they can utilize this powerful effect much more consistently. A similar restriction exists for moves that have the effect of raising all of the user's stats (Ancient Power, Silver Wind, etc.), since this is also an overpowered effect if allowed to be easily spammed. However, unlike with freeze moves, this restriction applies to all Pokemon, regardless of type.
Besides move effects, the user will also gain meter if holding certain items that have a chance of triggering when the user acts, such as the Quick Claw or King's Rock items. The same is true for any Abilities the user may have that have a chance of triggering upon acting, such as the Poison Touch or Quick Draw Abilities. The user will build meter if any of these effects are active, even if the selected move wouldn't normally build meter on its own. You won't build additional meter for these effects, however. You won't gain any meter from moves if targeting partner Pokemon, only opposing Pokemon. You won't gain any meter while Asleep or Frozen, even if you still managed to attack while in those states.
In addition, here are all of the affects that may alter the rate at which you may gain focus in this style:
Spoiler:Conditions that will boost Focus gains:
- If the target is under the Foresight/Miracle Eye effects, the base Focus gained is increased.
- Base Focus gained is increased by 30% if the user has the Serene Grace Ability.
- Base Focus gained is increased by 20% if the user is holding a "Luck" item, such as Lucky Egg, Luck Incense, or Amulet Coin.
- Base Focus gained is quadrupled if the party is under the Rainbow effect (Pledge combo).
- Total Focus gained is doubled when under the effects of Focus Energy.
Conditions that will reduce Focus gains:
- Total Focus gained is halved if the target was behind a Substitute.
- Total Focus gained is quartered if the user's move missed, or the target was immune to the user's move, or under the effects of Protect.
- Passive Style
Spoiler:The Passive Style is specialized in providing support for the party, and improving the party's defensive tools. When fully focused in this style, the Pokemon may ready a "Focused Guard" to boost the party's defenses, apply supportive effects, as well as negating the effects of other offensive-based Focus Styles.
Focused Guard
![]()
![]()
Left: Porygon2 spends its charged up meter to perform a Focused Guard, creating a barrier around the party that reduces damage and makes them immune to being inflicted with status conditions.
Right: The opposing Audino performs a Focused Guard. During the duration of Focused Guard, all ally Pokemon with defensive abilities that have a chance to trigger, such as Poison Point, Cursed Body, and Healer, will instead trigger with 100% certainty.
A Focused Guard places a defensive shield around the user and its allies for up to 4 turns. While this shield is in play, the party takes significantly reduced damage from attacks, as well as becoming immune to status effects and flinching. Any of the party Pokemon's defensive Abilities that normally only have a chance of triggering (Flame Body, Static, Healer, etc.) will now have a 100% certainty to trigger for the duration of the Focused Guard. In addition, for as long as a Focused Guard is up, the effects of the opponent's Focused Shot or Focused Effect are completely negated, and will not trigger when attacking the party. If any effects are in play that reduces or negates the party's ability to build or use focus, those effects are also removed, and the party becomes immune to them for the duration of Focused Guard.
However, a Focused Guard may be broken by an opponent's Focused Strike, which will remove the shield and prematurely end its effects. This style of focus is completely geared towards a supportive role, so it's most effectively used by Pokemon who excel at staying on the field for as long as possible to support the party. However, it is vulnerable to the hyper-offensive Critical Hit style, which not only threatens massive damage on the user, but can also completely nullify the effects of Focused Guard. This style is best used in a doubles format where the user's partner may deal with opponents who may try to counter your Focused Guard.
A Focused Guard will fail to activate if the effects of Focused Guard are already in play, or if the user attempts to Baton Pass on the same turn.
Building Focus
![]()
Porygon2 builds a larger portion of meter due to its HP being low and suffering from a status condition. It also gains meter from using non-damaging moves, and gains an additional bonus specifically when using healing moves.
Users of this Focus Style will build their focus meter whenever they select a status move. This means any move that deals damage will not build any meter. If the selected status move is also a healing move, the amount of focus gained is increased. In addition, the user will also gain focus whenever they are targeted by an opponent's move. If the user is suffering from a status condition, is flinched, or its HP is below half, the amount of focus gained from being targeted will increase. The amount of focus gained also increases if the user managed to negate an incoming attack somehow, such as through the use of Protect or Substitute. If the user is subjected to the effects of an opponent's offensive Focus Style, such as a Focused Shot, Focused Strike, or Focused Effect, overall focus gained is doubled. Essentially, the more attacks and conditions the user is able to sponge, the faster its focus meter will build.
Because of the strength and duration of the effects of Focused Guard, there are far fewer methods of altering the rates of focus gained in this style, which may be seen below:
Spoiler:Conditions that will boost Focus gains:
- Total Focus gained is doubled when under the effects of Focus Energy.
Conditions that will reduce Focus gains:
- Total Focus gained from being targeted is halved if under the Foresight/Miracle Eye effects.
- Enraged Style
Spoiler:The Enraged Style is a style that is unavailable to the player, and is only used on opponents to serve as a challenging boss encounter of sorts. The Enraged Style combines the effects of all of the above Focus Styles, giving the user the perfect aim of the Accuracy Style, the elusiveness of the Evasion Style, the offensive output of the Critical Hit Style, the combo potential of the Potency Style, as well as the defensive support of the Passive Style.
Focused Rage
![]()
The opposing Mewtwo spends its charged up meter to unleash its Focused Rage, which combines the effects of all other Focus Styles in one.
When an opponent unleashes its Focused Rage, it becomes a major threat with optimized offensive and defensive abilities. Its selected move gains the perfect accuracy afforded by a Focused Shot, as well as the guaranteed chance to land a critical hit and trigger any additional effects afforded by a Focused Strike and Focused Effect, respectively. Defensively, the user also perfectly evades any attacks this turn as it would with a Focused Dodge, as well as gaining all of the supportive buffs of a Focused Guard. Only enemy Pokemon may used this Focus Style, and is designed to be used for boss encounters. It is possible for the player's Pokemon to be given this Focus Style through Debug mode, but even in those scenarios, using this Focus Style will simply fail when used in battle.
The activation of Focused Rage will always trigger, even if the user is incapacitated due to being asleep or frozen. However, this means that meter will always be consumed when triggering Focused Rage, even if the user gained no benefit from its activation.
Building Focus
Users of this Focus Style will build their focus meter whenever they target an opponent, or are targeted by an opponent with any move. When attacking, the amount of focus the user gains is halved if the target is behind a Substitute, and quartered if the target is immune to the user's move due to typing or the effects of Protect. If the user's move misses the target, then no focus is gained at all. However, if the user's move managed to faint its target, the user gains a full focus meter. When being targeted, no focus will be gained if the user is unaffected by an opponent's attack due to a miss, an immunity, or Protect. However, if the user suffers a critical hit its HP falls below half, then any focus gained is increased.
Generally, this Focus Style builds focus in a similar way to all the other styles combined. Modifiers to Accuracy, Critical Hit, and Added Effect chance all play into how quickly meter builds while attacking. Similarly, any modifiers to Evasion, as well as any defensive conditions that would build more meter in the Passive Style are factored in when the user builds meter while defending.
Because of the strength and duration of the effects of Focused Rage, this Focus Style generally builds meter at half the rate as most other Focus Styles. There are also far fewer methods of altering the rates of focus gained in this style, which may be seen below:
Spoiler:Conditions that will boost Focus gains:
- If the user's target is under the Foresight/Miracle Eye effects, the base Focus gained is increased.
- Total Focus gained is doubled when attacking while under the effects of Focus Energy.
Conditions that will reduce Focus gains:
- Total Focus gained from being targeted is halved if under the Foresight/Miracle Eye effects.
Changing Styles
Spoiler:![]()
![]()
Left: Changing a Pokemon's Focus Style by visiting a Focus Tutor NPC.
Right: Changing a Pokemon's Focus Style through the Debug tools.
You can freely change a Pokemon's Focus style at any time outside of battle through the use of a special NPC who offers this service for you, or through the Debug options found under "Level/Stats" under a Pokemon's debug tools. However, it is also possible to temporarily change a Pokemon's style mid-battle as well by using specific moves or items that grant these effects.
![]()
The X Accuracy item boosts Gallade's Accuracy stat, which will automatically shift it into the Accuracy style as well.
Many moves that were previously used to boost Accuracy or Evasion have now been repurposed as methods of changing styles during combat. For example, the move Double Team may now be used to shift a Pokemon's Focus into the Evasion style. You can use moves like these to completely change up a Pokemon's strategy on the fly, allowing you to utilize the effects of multiple Focus Styles on a single Pokemon. Any combat changes to a Pokemon's Focus Style are temporary however, and will revert as soon as the Pokemon switches out or leaves battle. Note however that Pokemon using the Enraged style cannot have its style changed mid-battle, and any effect that would normally shift focus styles will fail on users of that style.
Changes to Old Effects
To support the extensive changes to how RNG mechanics are now handled, many existing moves, items, abilities, and other mechanics required updating to suit this new style of gameplay. Below is a list of all changes to existing mechanics that this plugin makes:
- Changes to Mechanics
Spoiler:
- Accuracy
This stat is no longer factored in to the Accuracy calculation. A move's Accuracy is now completely dependent on each individual move's base Accuracy. Instead, raising this stat will simply increase the rate at which the user's focus meter builds while in the Accuracy Focus Style, granting more focus the more boosts this stat has. In addition, increasing the user's Accuracy stat will cancel out the opponent's Evasion boosts; slowing down the rate their focus meter fills if they are using the Evasion Style. If the user isn't already in the Accuracy Focus Style, it will temporarily shift into that style whenever its Accuracy stat is changed.
- Evasion
This stat is no longer factored in to the Accuracy calculation. A move's Accuracy is now completely dependent on each individual move's base Accuracy. Instead, raising this stat will simply increase the rate at which the user's focus meter builds while in the Evasion Focus Style, granting more focus the more boosts this stat has. In addition, increasing the user's Evasion stat will cancel out the opponent's Accuracy boosts; slowing down the rate their focus meter fills if they are using the Accuracy Style. If the user isn't already in the Evasion Focus Style, it will temporarily shift into that style whenever its Evasion stat is changed.
- Critical Hits
Moves no longer have a chance to critically hit, and the concept of a critical hit "ratio" has been removed. Instead, moves may now only ever critically hit if an effect specifically allows them to, or the user of the move expends a fully charged focus meter while using the Critical Hit Focus Style. Effects that previously increased the user's critical hit ratio have been retooled to now simply increase the rate at which the user's focus meter builds while in the Critical Hit style.
- Added Effects
Moves no longer have the chance to trigger their added effects, unless they have a 100% activation rate. Instead, if a move has a chance to apply an added effect, it may only do so if the user is using the Potency Focus Style and expends a full Focus meter. Effects that previously increased the odds of added effects occurring have been retooled to now simply increase the rate at which the user's focus meter builds while in the Potency style.
- Changes to Items
Spoiler:
- Wide Lens/Zoom Lens
Holding these items no longer have any effect on Accuracy. Instead, they will now boost the charge rate of the user's focus meter if they are in the Accuracy Focus Style.
- Bright Powder/Lax Incense
Holding these items no longer have any effect on Accuracy. Instead, they will now boost the charge rate of the user's focus meter if they are in the Evasion Focus Style, and simultaneously lower the charge rate of the attacking Pokemon's focus meter if that Pokemon is in the Accuracy Focus Style.
- Dire Hit
This item no longer boosts a Pokemon's critical hit ratio. Instead, this will boost the rate at which the user's focus meter charges while in the Critical Hit Focus Style. This has up to six different "stages" of effectiveness, similar to a regular battle stat. If the Pokemon isn't already in the Critical Hit Focus Style, using this item will temporarily shift it into that style.
- Scope Lens/Razor Claw
Holding these items no longer have any effect on critical hit ratio. Instead, they will now boost the charge rate of the user's focus meter if they are in the Critical Hit Focus Style.
- Quick Claw/King's Rock/Razor Fang
Holding these items may no longer randomly trigger their effects. Instead, they may now only ever trigger if the user activates a Focused Effect by expending a full Focus meter while using the Potency Focus Style.
- Lucky Egg/Luck Incense/Amulet Coin
These "Luck"-based items have been given a hidden bonus when held that allows them to charge the user's Focus meter at a slightly faster rate when the user is using the Potency Focus Style.
- Mental Herb
This item will now also consider effects that impair or lock a Pokemon's Focus as a "mental affliction", meaning it will trigger and cure effects that would prevent a Pokemon from building or using its Focus. This will not trigger on effects that directly reduce the user's Focus meter, however. For example, this can be used to counteract the effects of an opponent's Focused Shot that may normally lock you out from triggering your Focus for 4 turns.
- Micle Berry
Because Accuracy boosts play a far less impactful role now, this item has been given a complete revamp to give it a brand new niche under this new gameplay style. When consumed in a pinch, this berry will now fully charge the user's focus meter, regardless of which Focus Style the user is in. This can lead to powerful combos with the right setup.
- Focus Sash/Focus Band
In addition to their normal effects, these items now have an additional effect that fully charges the user's focus meter when activated, regardless of which Focus Style the user is in. This can lead to powerful combos with the right setup.
- Changes to Abilities
Spoiler:
- Compound Eyes/Victory Star
These abilities no longer have any effect on Accuracy. Instead, they will now boost the charge rate of the user's focus meter if they are in the Accuracy Focus Style.
- Hustle
This ability no longer has any effect on Accuracy. Instead, this ability will now only have an effect if the user is in the Accuracy Focus Style. If so, this Ability will boost the user's damage with physical moves by 50% at the expense of halving the charge rate of the user's focus meter.
- Tangled Feet
Because Accuracy calculation no longer considers anything but the move's base accuracy, this ability's effect needed to be changed. Instead of applying a modifier to the opponent's accuracy calculation, this ability now works more like the Wonder Skin ability. Whenever the user is confused, the base accuracy of the opponent's moves is reduced to 50 when targeting the user. This has no effect on moves that already have 50 or less accuracy. Unlike Wonder Skin, this applies to all moves, not just status moves. This new effect retains the same spirit of the original ability, except it's actually much stronger now.
- No Guard
This ability remains unchanged. However, a new message will now display if a user of this Ability targets a Pokemon using a Focused Dodge, which states that the user ignores the dodge due to this Ability.
- Sand Veil/Snow Cloak
These abilities no longer have any effect on Evasion. Instead, they will now boost the charge rate of the user's focus meter if they are in the Evasion Focus Style.
- Super Luck
This ability no longer has any effect on critical hit ratio. Instead, this ability will now boost the charge rate of the user's focus meter if they are in the Critical Hit Focus Style.
- Battle Armor/Shell Armor
These abilities remains the same. However, a new message will now display when a Pokemon using a Focused Strike attempts to deal a critical hit to a user of one of these abilities, which states that the user ignores the crit due to this ability.
- Serene Grace
This ability no longer has any effect on added effect rates. Instead, this ability will now boost the charge rate of the user's focus meter if they are in the Potency Focus Style.
- Abilities with a chance to trigger upon acting (Stench, Poison Touch, Quick Draw)
These abilities may no longer randomly trigger their effects. Instead, these abilities may now only ever trigger if the user activates a Focused Effect by expending a full Focus meter while using the Potency Focus Style.
- Abilities with a chance to trigger passively (Flame Body, Static, Shed Skin, Healer, etc.)
These abilities may still randomly trigger. However, the odds of these abilities triggering will now be increased to 100% if the user's party is under the effects of Focused Guard.
- Steadfast
In addition to its normal effect, this ability will now fully charge the user's focus meter when activated, regardless of which Focus Style the user is in. Now that it is possible to ensure flinch effects outside of Fake Out due to the introduction of Focused Effect, it makes sense that an ability that triggers upon being flinched should be given a buff to compensate for that.
- Changes to Moves
Spoiler:
- Odor Sleuth/Foresight/Miracle Eye
These effects still function the same in terms of negating type immunities. However, due to Evasion boosts no longer directly affecting the accuracy of moves, the Evasion-canceling effects of these moves no longer apply, and have been instead given new utility in altering the charging rate of a Pokemon's focus meter. If a Pokemon under these effects are targeted by an attack, any Focus they would build from being targeted is halved (applies specifically to the Evasion, Passive, and Enraged styles). Alternatively, if a Pokemon targets an opponent that is under one of these effects, the base Focus the attacker would normally gain is doubled (applies specifically to the Accuracy, Critical Hit,, Potency, and Enraged styles). So in essence, these effects now act as both a buff to offensive focus users, and a debuff to defensive focus users simultaneously. Note that these effects do not count as "mental afflictions", and thus are not healed by the updated Mental Herb's effects despite negatively affecting Focus gains in certain scenarios.
- High critical hit ratio moves (Slash, Razor Leaf, Night Slash, etc.)
With the removal of critical hit ratio, these moves will now instead charge the user's focus meter at a faster rate when the user is in the Critical Hit Focus Style. However, this bonus is ignored if the user has the Sheer Force ability, since it still counts as a move effect.
- Baton Pass
This move hasn't been changed at all directly, however, using it will now also pass on the user's current focus meter. So if you have a fully charged meter, it is possible to pass that meter on to another Pokemon, regardless of whether or not the two Pokemon share the same Focus Style.
- Lock-On/Mind Reader
These moves no longer ensures a hit the following turn. Instead, they have been retooled for the focus mechanic, and will instead fully charge the user's focus meter on use, allowing them to activate their focus on the following turn. Using this move will also shift the user into the Accuracy Focus Style, if they aren't already in that style. This keeps this move relatively identical to how it previously worked, just in a way that blends naturally with the focus mechanic. This change also gives this move some additional utility by allowing the user to shift focus styles mid-battle.
This change may be considered as both a buff and a nerf to these moves. On one hand, they serve as a buff, since the effect may no longer be circumvented by the opponent by simply switching out. However it is also a nerf because these moves may no longer be used to ensure that OHKO moves will land, since the focus mechanic specifically cannot be used to give those moves perfect accuracy.
- Focus Blast
This move now has a hidden secondary effect when used in the Accuracy Focus Style. Whenever this move is used, the user's Focus meter increases by 30% more than it normally would.
- Focus Punch
This move still functions as it normally does. However, the user's focus meter will now become fully charged during the "tighten focus" phase of this attack. If the user is struck and loses its focus, its entire focus meter will now be depleted, in addition to causing its move to fail. This ties the focus mechanic more tightly into the move's theme, as well as giving the move an even greater emphasis on its risk/reward element.
- Laser Focus
This move no longer ensures a critical hit the following turn. Instead, it has been retooled for the focus mechanic, and will instead fully charge the user's focus meter on use, allowing them to activate their focus on the following turn. Using this move will also shift the user into the Critical Hit Focus Style, if they aren't already in that style. This keeps this move relatively identical to how it previously worked, just in a way that blends naturally with the focus mechanic. This change also gives this move some additional utility by allowing the user to shift focus styles mid-battle.
Besides using a Dire Hit on a Pokemon, this move is the only way to force a Pokemon to shift into the Critical Hit style mid-battle.
- Focus Energy
This move has been repurposed for more general use. The Focus Energy effect now doubles the rate that the user's Focus meter fills in all Focus Styles, making it useful for any Pokemon that learns it. This effect can stack with any other effect that increases Focus gains, making it easy to combo off of, and a great filler move to slot into almost any moveset. Note that the effect of the Lansat Berry (which has the same effect as this move), also has the same updated effect.
Plugin Tutorials
Focus MeterSpoiler:![]()
This plugin supports four different display styles for the focus meter. You can change this by settingFOCUS_METER_STYLE
to a number in the settings. Setting this to zero will hide all focus meter displays, and you will only be notified about your focus levels through battle messages indicating that your meter is full. Below are each of the visual styles that can be used:
- Simple Style
This is the default meter style. A bar is positioned above each battler's databox, with the same thickness as the user's HP or Exp. bars. This is the perfect balance between being visually easy to read, yet non-intrusive to the rest of the battle displays, making it ideal for single battles. The downside to this meter style, however, is that it clutters the screen in battles with multiple Pokemon on both sides. Because of this, this meter is automatically hidden on the opponent's side if there are more than one battler, and hidden on the player's side if there are more than two battlers.
You can change theFOCUS_METER_XY
setting to change the positioning of this meter relative to each battler's databox.
- Thin Style
This is a less intrusive, but slightly harder to read visual style that aims to resolve some of the issues with the Simply Style meter. Instead of displaying above battler's databoxes, this meter overlays the upper edge of databoxes so that nothing overlaps an ally's databox during battles with multiple Pokemon. The meter itself is only two pixels thick, however, so it may be more challenging to see, especially at low amounts. Despite this compromise, this meter will still be cut off screen on the opponent's side if there are three battlers present, so in these types of battles, all meters will be automatically hidden on the opponent's side. However, the player's side can display all three meters just fine, so there is no need to ever have them hidden.
You can change theFOCUS_METER_XY
setting to change the positioning of this meter relative to each battler's databox.
- Vertical Style
This is a unique style from the others in that the meter is displayed up to down rather than left to right. This is displayed on the inner portion of each battler's databox, extending the design to a complete rectangle. This style resolves many of the display issues from the previous two styles, in that it can be properly displayed on all Pokemon, regardless of battle size. However, the bar may be slightly harder to read due to being a lot more squished compared to the other styles, and in an abnormal shape.
Unlike the previous two styles, the positioning of this meter style cannot be changed.
- Advanced Style
This is the least subtle style that takes the meter display to the extreme by simply turning the Pokemon's entire databox into one large meter. The benefits of this style is that its extremely easy to read on all battlers regardless of battle size. However, it's highly intrusive visually, and draws a ton of attention to itself. Which can make it a strain on the eyes, particularly in battles with multiple Pokemon on each side.
Like with the Vertical Style, the positioning of this meter style cannot be changed.
Other Visual Settings
In addition to meter styles, there are a few other plugin settings that can be tweaked to change display properties.
SHOW_FOE_FOCUS_METER
This may be set to "false" to hide all opponent's focus meters, regardless of style or battle size. You can use this if you'd prefer the player to be unable to see when the opponent is at full focus.
FOCUS_METER_SIZE
This sets the maximum number of points necessary to fill up a Pokemon's focus meter. By default, this is set to 100 points. All effects that build a Pokemon's meter are scaled with this number in mind, so the amounts of focus gained will be roughly the same regardless of what you set this to. This is mostly here in case you want to mod your game to display the actual focus numbers (like HP numbers), and want it to display a different number for visual reasons.
FOCUS_FILL_TIME
This is the amount of time (in seconds) it takes for the focus meter to fill. The higher you set this number, the slower the bar will fill, and vice versa. By default, this is set to 0.4, which is a solid middle ground between speed and readability.
Meter Gameplay Settings
You can change more than just the visual elements of focus meters. You can also tweak how they behave in battle with certain settings, described below.
FOCUS_TRIGGER_KEY
Sets the keyboard key that will be used to toggle the Pokemon's use of focus when their meter is fully charged. By default, this is set to theTab
key.
FOCUS_METER_TIMER
Normally, when a Pokemon acquires a full focus meter, they only have 3 turns to utilize this meter before they lose their focus, and the meter resets to zero. This mechanic is in place to prevent the player from playing too conservatively, and encourage strategies that are based around repeatedly building meter at a rapid pace, rather than just building up to it once and just holding on to it until it is necessary. However, if you want to balance this differently, you can change the number of turns a full meter will be held with this setting. If you'd like for a Pokemon to hold its meter indefinitely until it is used, you can simply set this to -1.
FOCUS_GAIN_SCALE
This allows you to control the rate at which Pokemon gain meter. If you find that Pokemon are simply gaining meter too slow, and want to speed up how often Pokemon can achieve a full meter, simply increase the number set here, or vice versa. By default, this is set to "1", which is the normal amount. The total amount of focus gained is multiplied by the number set here. So if you set it to 1.5, for example, all Pokemon will gain 50% more meter than they normally would. Set it to 0.5, and all Pokemon will gain 50% LESS meter than they normally would. Play around with this to get the balance you feel is right for your game.
Note: If theNO_FOCUS_MECHANIC
game switch is enabled, all focus meter displays will be hidden in battle, and any mechanics that build or utilize focus meter will be disabled.
Focus PanelSpoiler:![]()
In battle, you may pull up a new display during the command phase that allows you to quickly see the current state of each battler's focus meter. This is referred to as the Focus Panel. This can be useful for more clearly seeing how much meter each Pokemon currently has, but you can tweak this with a variety of settings to control just how much information is available to the player with this panel.
To set which keyboard key will allow you to toggle the Focus Panel, you may do so by settingFOCUS_PANEL_KEY
to a key. By default, this is set to theP
key.
By using theFOCUS_PANEL_DISPLAY
plugin setting, you can control how exactly the meter for each Pokemon is represented on this panel.
- When set to "0", then the Focus Panel will be disabled, and nothing will happen when you try to toggle on its display.
- When set to "1", the actual meter for each battler will be shown.
![]()
- When set to "2", the percentage of filled meter for each battler will be shown.
![]()
- When set to "3", the actual amount of filled meter will be shown for each battler, out of the total size of the focus meter that was set with
FOCUS_METER_SIZE
.
![]()
- If the
SHOW_FOE_FOCUS_METER
setting was set to "false", then you won't be able to see the current state of any of the foe's focus meters.
![]()
Note: If theNO_FOCUS_MECHANIC
game switch is enabled, the Focus Panel will be disabled, and be unable to be displayed.
Focus StylesSpoiler:Each Pokemon will specialize in a particular Focus Style, which is assigned to them at random upon creation. You can view a Pokemon's current Focus Style at any point on the stats page in its Summary. If you'd like to play around with a preset party to experiment with each Focus Style, you can run the scriptpbFocusDemoParty
to give yourself a demo party consisting of Pokemon I designed that act as a demo for each style. You can also give yourself this party through the Debug menu, found within the "Deluxe Plugins" option.
If you'd like to change the Focus Style of any individual Pokemon, you may do so through the following methods:
- Focus Trainer
This is the method that most players will probably be using during normal gameplay. This plugin comes with a script that may be called in an event similar to a Move Relearner or Tutor, which can be used to train a Pokemon to shift its focus to a different style. This can be put somewhere like in PokeCenters for easy access, allowing the player to easily change up their party at any time.
To call this event, run the following script in an event:
Where "gender" may be set to either "0" for blue-colored male text, or "1" for red-colored female text. If this parameter is omitted, then genderless black text will be displayed. You can also also access the Focus Trainer through the Debug menu, found within the "Deluxe Plugins" option.Code:pbFocusTrainer(gender)
- Debug
A new debug option can be found in the Pokemon menu, within the "Deluxe Options..." tab. Here, you can manually change a Pokemon's Focus Style. Unlike with the event method, here you are able to change your Pokemon to have the "Unfocused" or "Enraged" styles, neither of which are normally obtainable by the player. The Unfocused style is the equivalent of having no Focus Style, meaning the user will neither build any focus in battle, nor will they be able to trigger their focus meter even if they somehow obtained a full meter.
The Enraged Style is usable like any other style, however it will simply fail when it is triggered in battle by the player. This style is exclusively used by NPC battlers to act as a boss mechanic.
- Newly Generated Pokemon
There is a plugin setting calledFOCUS_STYLE_DEFAULT
which allows you to select which particular Focus Style will act as the default whenever a new Pokemon is generated. To do this, all you need to do is set this to a Focus ID. This includes the following:
- :None
- :Accuracy
- :Evasion
- :Critical
- :Potency
- :Passive
- :Enraged
So if you set this to :Accuracy, for example, all Pokemon that are generated by the game (wild, gift, even NPC Pokemon) will have the Accuracy Focus Style as their default, and will spawn with that style unless it is manually set as something else. If you set this to :None, then all generated Pokemon will have the Unfocused Style, and be unable to build or use any focus in battle unless their style is manually changed. If you don't want a specific style to be set on Pokemon, you can leave this setting as "nil". If so, all Pokemon will spawn with a random Focus Style, based on their Personal ID (similar to how Natures and such are randomized). Note that the Unfocused and Enraged Styles will never be randomly generated on a Pokemon in this way.
- NPC Trainer Pokemon
You can set specific Focus Styles on a trainer's Pokemon in the same way you would set any other specific attribute - through the trainers.txt PBS file, or the in-game trainer editor. In here, all you need to do is add an entry for "Focus" to the desired Pokemon, and set it to the name of the specific style ID you want it to have.
Note: If theNO_FOCUS_MECHANIC
game switch is enabled, Pokemon will no longer display their Focus Style in the Summary, and be unable to change their Focus Styles.
