So it looks like we're getting Super Pokemon Rumble or something, and...

There are only 5th Gen Pokemon included except for Pikachu, at least judging by the preview in CoroCoro, and the initial playable character are Pikachu, Snivy, Tepig, and Oshawott. You basically run around hack-and-slashing your way through other Pokemon, and each Pokemon can level up and learn new attacks. It utilizes the models from the recent 3D Pokedex, apparently. Kind of a non-turn based Mysterious Dungeon, you could say. – Kenhorou
Srsly, I know Pikachu's the mascot of the franchise, but every single thing having to do with Gen V other than the main games, from the TCG to toys to spinoff games, features it as the only older Pokemon (whether based on the anime or not), and usually more prominently than any other Pokemon, despite the fact that it's completely unobtainable in BW.

Pokedex 3D is spared for now, but wait until they announce Pikachu (and specifically Pikachu) as DLC...

Honestly, in my opinion they should have at least warned about this in advance by putting the Pikachu line in the Unova Dex as the only older-generation line, let alone making it obtainable in the game at all (what could have otherwise worked would have been if you get Pikachu as a free gift from Juniper or something as soon as you get the National Dex). Not all fans like Pikachu that much, but it can turn from "mild dislike" to "unusual irritation" when it looks like they're going to give you a bit of a break from the yellow mouse (its absence in BW) and then they're like "Haha, just kidding, that was a bluff - enjoy looking at Pikachu's chubby face everywhere!" Personally, I started out missing Pikachu when I saw that it was unobtainable - until I started seeing its face on every single BW-related toy, trading card set, etc. that I looked at. As it is, I think it should have just been in the anime and anime-related merchandise, and stayed there.

    Rant over.

What are your thoughts on BW and Pikachu merchandising considering its absence from the games?

Note to all, don't discuss the rumble game here. ^___^

Anyway, I think Pikachu is overdone really, even within the games, aka looking at the skyscraper in Castelia, Nimbasa and Striaton's garden. There's other places but they don't come to mind right now. But I agree, it is strange Pikachu is still completely involved with this generation - and I swear it hadn't been that involved in other games before, either. Considering the people of Unova barely know about the Pokemon of other regions (or discuss them, that is) it's surprising that Pikachu is still known. I don't think they should've included Pikachu in the pokedex tho, 'cause now that would've been too far tbh.

It is the mascot of the series, but I agree that it is a little overrated. A man in Castelia City even has one! But, foreign Pokemon shouldn't be considered rare in Unova, as half the map is filled with them...

come to think of it, Pikachu has also been an NPC in EVERY game, the least they could have done was use their region-specific variants(Pichu, Plusle/Minun, Pachirisu, Emolga), it gets kind of old, like the anime(which might i add in my opinion doesn't really deserve the title of being called an anime)

Pikachu is the mascot of Pokemon.

So they still want to find a way to include him in the Isshu/Unova saga even though he can't be obtained in BW at all.

You seem to have a point, I barely noticed Pikachu during the DP era... for some reason, it feels way more involved with Gen V than with Gen IV.

As for the game itself, I don't find Pikachu to be too overdone - there are also references to Charizard, Snorlax, Armaldo, Dragonite and a bunch of others, so it's a bit fairer. It isn't like they're acting like the only old Pokemon that exists is Pikachu (not like everything outside the game).

Next thing you know, the TCG Red Collection secret rare will turn out to be another Pikachu variant, and we find out that the secret-rare gimmick in BW sets is a collection of Pikachus. My brain hurts just thinking of it >.<

I do think pikachu is being tad overhyped lately, but meh, it's the mascot of pokemon, so it needs to be "special."

Open the spoiler if it makes you feel any better :P

Heh that's actually pretty cool, it would indeed make more sense for Pikachu to hog the spotlight if we had a Kanto/Yellow remake. Plus instead of always being with Snivy, Tepig and Oshawott, it would be seen with Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle, which makes MUCH more sense IMO :P The P/S/T/O quartet just feels like Pika's been shoehorned in, while the P/B/C/S quartet feels much more "classic" and like they were meant to be shown together.

Only thing is... where's my Pokemon Purple Kanto game with Mewtwo as the cover mascot?

Gen V isn't just the games though, and that's what people talking here don't seem to think of. It's also the anime, and often that's what sells merchandise. Just because Pikachu doesn't play a part in the games doesn't mean that it doesn't play a part in the anime, because of course it does, it's Pikachu.

True, but spinoff games and the TCG are very obviously based more on the games than on the anime (the TCG does have some anime-based cards but skews closer to the games), plus the games pretty much are the franchise... The anime seems to be pretty big in Japan, but not as big internationally as it used to, where it's probably overshadowed by Ben 10 and stuff on the same network.

Pikachu is in B/W because it's the most famous Pokemon. I still find it weird that it can't be obtained in-game.

I was very dissapointed when I found out that Pikachu was completely unobtainable in B/W, then again, you could never obtain Pikachu in Gen 2 until all the way at the end of the game, when there was nothing else to do because at that point you had all the Kanto badges, apparently, they want Pikachu to be a Dream World exclusive in this generation, and I don't really like the replacement they have for Pikachu in the Unova dex (Emolga), and since I cannot obtain Raichu, I have to rely on Zebstrika and Ellectros for an Electric type on my B/W team...

But do you ever wonder why Colloseum, FireRed and LeafGreen were made? In Ruby and Saphire (still waiting on those remakes), only 200 Pokemon were available from the total 386 at the time, and for one to complete the Gen 3 Dex, they made Colloseum, giving us a limited library of Gen 2 Pokemon, which you had to transfer to R/S and breed in order to get them all, FR/LG were made so that the players could obtain all the Kanto Pokemon, and the Sevii Islands allowed us to catch the Pokemon we could not obtain in Colloseum, and the pre evolutions of the obtainable colloseum Pokemon became obtainable in Emerald in a new area of the Safari Zone, but there never was a single event for Celebi in Gen 3 (or at least outside Japan), making poor Celebi the only unobtainable Pokemon in Gen 3.

So, for now, we can only get Pikachu in the Dream World or by the PokeTransfer, unless the third game has a new area in which Pikachu can be obtained, although that's unlikely, we just have to wait until the third game comes out or they make the R/S remakes (that is, IF they make the remakes)...

You're saying you want a break from Pikachu? Maybe I want a break from all the ugly 5th generation Pokemon. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but Game Freak is not even developing this game.

In all honesty, it bugs me that the Pokemon developers are pretending no other Pokemon exist right now, but I'm glad that we still get Pikachu. I mean, it's like an excuse to be lazy and not add any other characters. I can understand the decision to only have 5th gen during BW, but not for Pokedex 3D and this.

Besides, Pikachu is awesome. I mean, the 5th generation Pokemon are just going to be ignored next generation anyways. Most people are going to move on and start going crazy over the even newer Pokemon. At least the franchise has consistent characters in Pikachu, Ash, and less so, Meowth.

In context of the Unova Region, it was annoying to see the Pikachu billboard in Castelia and the random Pikachu-trimmed bushes in the garden outside Striaton City. Because the Unova Region is so much further away from all the others, it would have made sense that Pokemon like Pikachu were not known at all, or at least not a whole lot. Certainly not enough for people to use it as on an advertisement board. Pokemon that can fly, like Charizard (isn't the drawbridge to Driftveil called 'Charizard Bridge'?) I can somewhat understand, though the reference is still a little odd. The only past-Gen Pokemon reference that made sense was Dragonite, because in its Pokedex entries, it is said to fly around the world.

One example of good past Pokemon referencing would be one of the Hikers in Castelia City; he has a Pikachu with him. That, I can understand! He's travelled from another Region with his Pokemon!

With me, Pikachu actually suffers from the same thing that Mudkip does, in terms of its use. Where the Internet meme that Mudkip is a part of is what drove me to really hate Mudkip, the Pika-punts to the head by the developers are starting to wear on me. I probably wouldn't mind as much if it wasn't everywhere...

Besides, I'd take my Galvantula or Zebstrika over Pikachu, any day~
Though in terms of Electric-types, they're all overshadowed by the awesomeness that is Amphy.

That's like saying Americans can't put Koalas on billboards. It doesn't matter how far away the are, they still should know about creatures in other parts of the world. It actually makes less sense that there aren't Pokemon from other regions being shown. Seriously, many animals make their way around the world as well, specifically rodents and birds. Humans also introduce new species into places themselves

Why wouldn't the people in Unova know about Pikachu? That's like saying the people in the US don't know about lions and tigers and bears kangaroos. Americans use exotic animals on advertisement boards all the time.

On an unrelated note, there's Rattata in this screenshot!

[PokeCommunity.com] GF should stop pretending that Pikachu's a Unova Pokemon...

True but they should at least show other non gen V pokemon...at least show Pichu...

True. I can't argue with that. I guess I'm just getting so Pikachu'd out that it's clouding my judgement on things like this, heh...

I did make a note on Pokemon that travel worldwide though, but I just didn't think on the whole grand scheme of things. One thing that I guess would have been nice to have would be some sort of 'Safari Zone' much like in the sense of Generation I's R/B/Y, in Fuchsia City, showing off some of the Pokemon that come from other Regions. I'm actually surprised they didn't include that, thinking on it now...

Really, I'm sick of the stupid rat too, but Game Freak's simply made the thing too popular for them to turn their backs on it now. I was annoyed when I started seeing its ugly mug, but I can't really say I was surprised. I was more surprised (but pleasantly surprised) when it turned out you couldn't catch the thing in B/W.
