    In Japan on April 1st, 1997, episode 1 was first broadcast. That's seventeen years ago already, holy man. So let's take a moment to think back- what do you remember most about the anime? How did you start watching it? What made you keep watching? What are some of your favourite memories associated with the show?
     
    The anime is an April Fool's joke?!

    The farthest I can go with memories is being really excited whenever I was able to watch an episode. They were always on late at night (considering my age) so I rarely was allowed to watch them. The first episode that I can remember watching was The Bridge Bike Gang, but Master Quest or Advanced was probably the current season during that time. The reason why I kept watching it was because it was Pokémon on TV haha and Ash was the coolest :P

    Well Happy 17 Pokemon Anime, The Anime is almost as old as me. I turn 17 on June
     
    I was just a wee four year-old at the time this beloved anime went to the air for the first time, and my annoyance aka my brother wasn't even born then.

    I was a whole one-year old. I did start watching the series at 5 years old or so, and started from the first episode. So, I didn't miss anything. I was just 4 years behind.
     
    I can't remember the first episode I watched, but I do specifically remember that the episode that got me hooked was the SS Anne cliffhanger. At the time, I never knew if I should watch Live and Kicking which shown The Simpsons or SM:TV Live which shown Pokemon...SM:TV Live won :D

    Is Pokemon the longest running anime or is there an older one that's still going? Very impressive that it reached 17 years wow! Happy Birthday Pokemon!

    Obviously not.
    Pokemon is actually pretty high in long running series but it's not the longest running one. Heck, even Detective Conan started earlier.
    First is Sazae-san as it started in... 1969 =D
     
    Wow a lot of younglings in this thread.. I was 12 at the time... O_O.

    Still one of the most funniest moments that made me laugh out loud and still genuinely makes me laugh anytime I see it is when Brock ash and Misty are all stranded in the sea with Jesse James and meowth and Jesse gets soo pissed at how useless Magikarp is and kicks him into the ocean and then Magikarp evolves into Gyarados. Then all of them are like WTF?! The look of terror and shock on their faces was hilarious.

    It's not an "obvious" thing. Most people aren't as far in the deep end of anime as you are. ;)

    Anyway, 17 years, wow. It's old enough to get a drivers license in the US and is almost old enough to vote in the US as well!

    I was 6 when it debuted in Japan, but I didn't see any of it until I was 9, when it got brought over to the US.
     
    I have no idea how old I was at that time, haha. Maybe four? Anyway, have to agree with everyone; 17 years is definitely a long time. Happy anniversary, Pokémon! Hope they keep the anime going for as long as they possibly can; it was a great part of my childhood, and seeing it disappear would definitely hurt. :(
