Has anyone played Ranger?

Wasn't my thing at all. I played Shadows of Almia and didn't enjoy the game, I found it quite underwhelming I'd say. I ended up giving my copy to my cousin. I just don't find momentarily capturing Pokémon as riveting as training and battling with them.

The original Pokemon Ranger is super nostalgic to me, I remember getting it for Christmas around release and played it religiously! Overall, I had a really good time playing it and remember it being quite tough with some of the end-game bosses. I really liked how Pokemon could be used in the field, as this wasn't seen often at all in Pokemon games back then, plus I transferred the Manaphy egg over to Platinum which was a nice exclusive bonus as well :)

Am surprised that loads of people haven't played Ranger but I suppose it makes sense when I think about it as most of my irl friends who played Pokemon never played it. Anyway, I think it's a decent spinoff to try!

Yes, I have, I played all three. I 100% both the first and second games with a fully complete Ranger Browser. All quests completed in Shadows of Almia, too. Guardian Signs is the only one I haven't 100% since the temple missions are too hard at a certain point to play alone. :| idk, I'm probably one of the few people who actually likes this side series.

However, I will say if you do try it, prepare to ruin your touch screen, because it will do that.

I actually quite liked Pokemon Ranger and I was kinda sad it got discontinued (though I understand why since Guardian Signs didn't sell well). I completed the dex in all 3 games and 100% the first 2 (the temples in Guardian Signs were hard to do solo lol... like I was still stuck on the Empoleon/Feraligatr fights in the Ice Temple before I stopped).

If Shadows of Almia had the Poke Assist mechanics of Guardian Signs, I could see Shadows of Almia being a lot better. Storywise, like the mainline Pokemon games the plot is more or less the same, except a different protagonist/region/evil team so people bashing on Ranger's "same-same" story/gameplay are kind of delusional. I would recommend playing it if you want but, it's definitely not a game for everyone, especially if you are used to the mainline games.

Loved them, my first and favourite being exactly Guardian Signs. Got it soon after release, I was the most excited I'd ever been for that game, and it was awesome. Great story (quite convoluted and twisty!), amazing music, very fun to play, cool summoning mechanics, and you even get to ride the Legendary Beasts!
All in all, a great spinoff and a great game of my childhood, I'd definitely reccomend it.

I've heard sooo many times how underrated this game is @_@ Most people I know haven't played any Ranger games at all. Who here has played? Do you think it's a good spinoff to try? What do you think of it?
P.S. Sheep, haven't you already asked something similar a little while back? The question sounds familiar!

We own all the games, and enjoy replaying them! Although its been a bit since we've played through Guardian Signs, we did replay Ranger last year and have been picking up Shadows of Almia this year. I also remember at least one of those games was responsible for messing up the touch screen on our DS lol

ahahah I wouldn't be surprised, but the sad reality is that my memory can be not so great so I may need to ask again in a few months if I haven't had time to do what I'm asking about yet lol. someone made a topic in march about the best ranger game and I inquired there on which is best to start with, so maybe that's the one you're thinking of!! wanted more specific opinions on how good the series is, so I made this :D

thanks for the feedback! about as mixed as I expected aha, only one way to find out how I like it!

This is one of the few spinoffs I haven't tried.

That said I probably would end up liking ranger since I've liked every spin off without exception. (Even pokemon dash).

Also, as for the touch screen being in danger from this game - not necessarily! I can say mine is in perfect condition after years of having that game played on it. You just have to watch how hard you press the stylus - easy does it, after all the game doesn't even register how hard you're striking. Push lightly and your screen will thank you for it with years of faithful service!

I played it when it first came out, i don't remember much other than ruining my ds screen rapidly circling Pokémon. I do not have a fond memory of the gameplay or the plot, but then again i don't remember much about it.
