Hatred: The Game

This game is the equivalent of a Leni Riefenstahl film: great execution, terrible subject.

At least it got an M rating, and I'm usually against ESRB ratings.

It should be allowed to exist, because videogames will only make you want to kill people if you're a psycho, and psychos are the exception, not the rule. Though the protagonist isn't someone I'd aspire to be.

*Ao rating.

Yes, this game is so bad it has an Adults Only rating. I think it's the third game to get this rating for depictions of violence.

I'm still not planning to buy this game, because I'll be only supporting the "edgy" factor if I did. Speaking of which:

The developer described Hatred 's as a reaction to video game aesthetic trends such as political correctness, politeness, vivid color, and games as art.

I thought today's AAA titles are already doing that with Metal Gear Rising and Devil May Cry?

Honestly, this is the only reason why I'm interested to begin with.

Just think...if all you social justice warriors well-intentioned idiots had kept your mouths shut and stopped trying to dictate what should and shouldn't be in video games, we wouldn't be having this now.

You only have yourselves to blame.

I just hope this doesn't turn in one of those controversial games were the only fun part is that the game was controversial.
Too late for that. 'Cuz really, this is one of those games that you'd expect to simply exist and have people stumble across it rather than being a big deal, but then it became a big deal and now we're here.

Though I'd be more interested if someone would take advantage of this opportunity to fight for or against the AO rating. Considering it has been a long time since a game has been granted the AO rating on a purely violent basis and that there really aren't that many AO games in general, I'd be interested to see someone take this chance to raise the discussion of the relevance of the AO rating, why nudity and sex warrant the rating more than violence, and if the rating even has a meaning at all.

Personally, I'd like to see it gone because it just means that the game shows lady parts (and lady parts, specifically) or let's the player kill people in ways that go past a very vague line. That's it. But if that same stuff is only slightly veiled or portrayed in a comical manner such as in Grand Theft Auto V or Deception, it's perfectly fine. After all, Trevor was, by ESRB standards, a walking AO rating. It's far too vague and serves little purpose (because M is for 17+ and AO is for...18+, so...), it just raises controversy for no reason and gets moms everywhere in a tizzy.

it's also quite ironic that sjw's bringing this game into attention gave free publicity work for the developers as well.

So apparently Twitch has a new rule against ao games, which seems to be more a rule against playing Hatred from what I have read. I'm personally annoyed by this. The viewers can make their own decisions about what they watch on stream tyvm.

The only reason someone would be watching somebody play that game is to laugh at it. Maybe they're just trying to keep teens and such from seeing it, as it's the only AO game I've seen in a long while to garner this much attention. You just know people are going to LP it to poke fun at it.

I'd imagine it's for legal reasons. There's a lot more tape involved with AO than there is for MA, T, E, and such, largely because of the nature of the content. As such, Twitch may not be able to provide streams for those games because it's a form of promotion, and considering the ages of those that go on Twitch, it makes sense.

From an ethical standpoint, though, I see this as about as unnecessary as the AO rating itself.

AO ratings affect sales as well, but I don't think that it will be a problem for this game.

Most major retailers in the United States prohibit the sale of AO rated games, but Hatred isn't going to run into that problem because a) it's only on PC and b) the developers seem to be going largely for digital distribution and Steam/other PC digital distributors are not as adverse to selling AO games.

Pre order copies are already available to those who did so ahead of time. What I have read so far is that the game itself is a solid Dual Stick Shooter, the graphics are beautiful, and the story is non existent. A reviewer I saw said that it was disappointing that this group with so much talent made this instead of something with more substance, and I think I agree with that. The one liners aren't funny like Postal, and the aesthetic while interesting, seems like it would get old after a couple levels. The missions boil down to "Kill X amount of people, kill X amount of cops, escape" and that seems to be it with a couple exceptions. The footage I saw used the same few executions over and over, so idk how long you can stand to see them. Especially since the game cuts in close instead of zooming in real time which would have been better on the eyes. It looks pretty fun gameplay wise and we might see some interesting things when the dev tools are released, hopefully. But I really can't say til I get my hands on it, which at this point I might put off for a week or so. Hopefully these guys use the money they make to develop some more promising games.

Hatred is the same principle as A Serbian Film. The justification is the same: to fight political correctness in art. However, while A Serbian Film, up to the more grotesque parts, had an interesting story, and actually has some sort of meaning, Hatred is pretty empty and tries too hard to shock. Even Mortal Kombat, the game that spawned the ESRB, wasn't this ambitious, but Mortal Kombat was at least funny, had great gameplay and employed nice technology. Mortal Kombat wouldn't have survived without having an actual game behind the cheesy fatalities. Hatred is empty and leads nowhere. You, as the depressed outcast who wants his revenge on mankind, are going to die anyway. You won't kill everyone that hurt you. The mission of the protagonist is doomed from the start, and the game should've made the player reflect on that rather than simply pander to people who love gore and the grotesque.

had great gameplay
Except it didn't. At least not the first one. The gameplay was very simplistic and each character only had two special moves. The only real edge it had was the over-the-top violence.

That isn't to say that the gameplay is bad (I don't think it is at least) but it's hardly great.

The violence in Hatred is a little underwhelming honestly, based on the footage I have seen. It seemed much worse when you saw several executions all together at once. I really don't think it needs an AO rating and I think that the company probably took it willfully without submitting their game for rating, as you can do with movies and the NC-17 rating.

They're using the AO rating for publicity then. Which makes sense; if they just took the M rating people would have forgotten about it in short order.

Hatred has been out for about an hour now, and as far as I can tell, society has not collapsed. Also, the game as a "Very Positive" on Steam, but I can't tell if they're being sarcastic or not.

A sample of some of the "Most Helpful" reviews.

The only way to regain your health is to execute innocent people begging for their life.

11/10, would happily murder.

P.S, for those wondering, no, this game doesn't make me want to shoot up a school.

You're a christian man that sells bibles door to door. Hilarity ensues.

My uncle who works for Nintendo told me, if you slow down the game speed by 66.6% and play it from the last level to the first level only walking backwards, you will hear the voice of satan whisper in your ear.
10/10 - Would ask my totally real uncle who definately works at Nintendo about tips on Hatred again.

No school DLC.
2/10

It's basically a Ben Garrison simulator.

The "protagonist" looks like Nathan Explosion from Metalocolypse. The game entails you killing. Everyone. thats it. Take a shotgun and have a blast. 10/10, Brutal as ♥♥♥♥

I cherry picked slightly, as there were a few that said actual things and a negative review which was the most credible since it was a pre-release review that had 6.4 hours. The others I'd put more stock in if they actually...you know...experienced the game. Most weren't even at an hour, and I really hope the game can't be fully, or even mostly understood in the time that the serious ones had on them.
