    Friday September 25th @ 1700 – Petalburg Gym

Clint could feel the nerves building as he headed towards the Gym once again. He was once again prepared to take on a Hoenn Gym Leader, yet today's opponent Wally was by all accounts a sizable step up from Brawly, the gentleman Clint dispatched in Dewford. Clint felt a little on edge, these high pressure situations were bound to bring up thoughts of second guessing and seeds of doubt in Clint's head. He would have to stash those away as he entered the Gym. The Gym was as plain as it was when he trained here yesterday, but it was busier than it had been before. A few trainers were practicing away with their Pokemon, but that was relatively inconsequential to Clint, He was here on business.

Norman and a younger, short and frail fellow were waiting in the foyer for Clint. Clint assumed the younger fellow had to be Wally, Norman's protege and the man Clint would have to earn the badge from.

"Good evening Clint, allow me to introduce you to Wally. Wally, this is Clint," Norman set up the introduction.

"Howdy partner," Clint quickly muttered out, tipping his hat towards Wally.

"Hello Clint, let's get ready for the battle," Wally said,

"Are we doing singles or doubles, and uh, two or four Pokemon?"

"Singles, and shoot I don't have four Pokemon so we're going with two," Clint replied.

Clint never liked double battles anyways, too much going on for his tastes. With the details sorted out, Clint, Wally and Norman all made their way towards the main ring for battles. Clint and Wally took their positions at opposite ends of the ring, and Norman stood between, hanging back on the edge. Clint and Wally stared each other down, with Clint winning the physical presence battle. That wasn't going to make a difference once the Pokemon come out, but the little victories have to count for something. Wally started out by letting out his Vigoroth, named Sloane while Clint responded by letting Charmeleon out.

"Leader Wally, Challenger Clint, are you ready," Norman said, setting the stage.

"Always ready Norman! Time to show Clint here how its done!"

Clint simply nodded his head in reply to that statement, and began to analyze the situation. Sloane could not stay still if her life depended on it, which could be turned into a weakness under the right circumstances. Sloane started off with a taunt, waving her hands at Charmeleon, inviting Charmeleon to come and take his best shot at her. Charmeleon pawed at the ground with his foot, clearly irked by the taunting. Charmeleon went after Sloane, and attacking her with a Fire Fang, chomping down on the Vigoroth, singeing the Pokemon. Charmeleon went in for another Fire Fang, but missed as Sloane managed to jump out of the way.

The Vigoroth was bouncing around the ring, full of energy as she flung her self towards Charmeleon, swinging her arm back and slashing the lizard Pokemon. Charmeleon fell back, but managed to regain his footing, cutting into the floor of the gym with his claws as he refocused his sights on Sloane. Charmeleon immediately let out a Dragon Breath, hurling a powerful nebula towards Sloane. The energetic Vigoroth jumped over the Dragon Breath, before striking down on Charmeleon with a Shadow Claw, which gave off an eerie energy as Charmeleon fell to the floor. Charmeleon picked himself up off of the floor, and stared down his opponent, who was swaying her arms back and forth in front of Charmeleon.

"You better think of something quick Clint, if you want to stand a chance," Wally taunted.

Sloane charged at Charmeleon yet again, but this time Charmeleon set up a smokescreen, which led to Sloane losing track of Charmeleon. Charmeleon used this opportunity to jump over the smokescreen and Sloane, using the Dragon Breath attack as he flew over her head, putting the Vigoroth down on her back. Charmeleon landed ahead of Sloane, and looked back at her over his shoulder.

Clint looked over at Wally, and tapped the side of his head. As Sloane got back up, Charmeleon rushed her and jumped on her back, leading the Vigoroth to shake heavily trying to get Charmeleon off of her. Charmeleon bit right on her neck with Fire Fang, bringing Sloane to her knees. This caused Charmeleon to lose his grip, and stumble back behind Sloane. The two Pokemon turned around to face each other, anticipating the next move. Wally simply chuckled to himself, and planned his next move. Sloane let out a loud roar, shaking the room. Charmeleon hightailed it back to Clint, trying to jump back into his Pokemon. Clint obliged the lizard Pokemon and returned him to his Pokeball. Clint looked over to Norman with a raised eyebrow, who then began to speak.

"Move's totally legal kid, you still have another Pokemon available, plus Charmeleon can return to the fight if neccesary."

"I had you pegged as a simpleton Clint, but c'mon you should know that's totally legal," Wally chimed in.

Clint shrugged his shoulders, and slid his hand over the Pokeball with Grovyle in it, and flung it off of his hip quickly, entering Grovyle into the fight. Sloane was facing Grovyle, and started thumping her chest with her fists. Sloane then snarled at Grovyle, and started to make her move. Sloane swung at Grovyle with a Slash, scratching up Grovyle and knocking her to the ground. Sloane cocked her arm back to start slashing again, but this time Grovyle rolled out of the way, causing Sloane to miss her attack. Grovyle then sprung back up into action, ready to do damage.

Grovyle charged at Sloane, and jumped up and swung her leg up, hitting the Vigoroth with a roundhouse kick. True to the Double Kick move, Grovyle got the other foot in, both kicks hitting Sloane square in the chin, sending Sloane flying back, tumbling back on the ground. Sloane picked herself back up after that, but was in rough shape. She was panting very heavily.

"Sloane you still have some more to give me I think," Wally confided in his Pokemon.

Sloane nodded her head in agreement, and advanced towards Grovyle. But Grovyle was faster, slamming square into Sloane with a quick attack, putting Sloane down on the ground. That was only temporary, as Sloane jumped back into action, but stumbled on her way back in. Sloane hit Grovyle with a Shadow Claw. Grovyle was hit by both Sloane's claw and the spectral image of a claw that passed through Grovyle, making her very tense. Grovyle managed to keep her footing throughout the encounter. Sloane attempted to Slash Grovyle once again, but this time Grovyle used Detect, which gave her the foresight to predict attacks and avoid them. Grovyle performed a limbo under Sloane's swinging arm, and positioned herself into the perfect counterattack. Another Double Kick aught to do the trick, so Grovyle landed one kick after the other, launching the Vigoroth back, landing at Wally's feet. The Pokemon was clearly struggling, but Wally encouraged her to keep going.

Wally had Sloane use Roar again, so Clint once again had to go through the motions of switching out his Pokemon. Wasn't the worst move by Wally, as Grovyle's Double Kick was landing super effective hits. Charmeleon got right after the weakened Vigoroth, using Fire Fang to grip onto Sloane, and that looked to be the last straw for Sloane. She collapsed onto the floor, leading to Charmeleon letting go. Wally sighed, and returned Sloane to her Pokeball. Wally put his pointer and middle finger over his closed mouth, appearing to ponder his next move, before calling out his next Pokemon, a Dunsparce named Persephone.

"Sloane is no longer eligible to battle, Leader Wally is down to his last Pokemon, Persephone," Norman updated the small audience of gym trainers that had formed around this match.

Clint wasn't sure if he had the advantage or not. Sure he had gotten a knockout, but both of his Pokemon had taken some hits while Persephone was at full health. Clint looked down at Charmeleon, then back up at Wally. No room for mistakes now, that applied to both parties. It was time for Clint to show and prove...

    Chapter 4 #06 - Options: Limited

Marie eventually turns in a few sheets of homework to Brendan, who gives her a few tips but points out that each of the essays are better than the last and they are of an acceptable quality by the end. His next assignment is for her to get some lunch, and then find a Pokémon outside of the Institute's fields to observe. Lunch is a hectic affair, which is… actually better than not. This way, she spends far more time paying attention to her Pokémon than stewing over Edison.

But she doesn't have as much distraction after she packs her Pokémon back up- barring Pokie, of course- and her thoughts float back to friendship and boundaries and lessons and flirting as she absentmindedly follows whatever paths her feet find.

Unfortunately, her aimless wandering leads her straight to another person she knows- though this time, one she would have preferred to avoid. And there's no hiding on this open path- the creak of Pokie's wagon is the only other noise aside from June's commands as she practises with the scared little bug from Dewford and… some Ledian-looking thing. Marie knows both of these Pokémon have nicknames, but she really doesn't care to remember them, and hadn't bothered to remember their species last time. She hesitates, then pulls out her PokéDex. Edison would be proud.

The Ledian-thing is an Orbeetle, the evolved form of Dottler, the round psychic thing that had won the match for June back in Dewford. It's a Psychic-Bug that uses its powers to fly rather than its wings. And the other thing, that's Wimpod- a Water-Bug that runs away from everything. Okay, and what are they doing?

Honestly, she doesn't need the PokéDex to tell her that, not when she actually pays attention. She remembers the tricks Wally used, and groans quietly. June must have learned the same while battling him. But- there's no way June won with her little bug team, not against a Hall-of-Famer and tournament star.

    Is there?

Marie plasters on a smile and shoves her PokéDex into her pocket, striding confidently off the path to where June and her Pokémon practise. Pulling the wagon is much harder on soft turf, but she marches onward.

"June!" she calls out, cheer dripping from the single syllable. "What a surprise to see you out here!"

Her voice doesn't immediately register with June, but when she turns her head and sees Marie approaching her, her face goes completely red and her knees begin to tremble. "M-Marie! It's, um… been awhile! After you were absent from the tour last week, I, um, was wondering what you might be up to…!" While she struggles through her sentence, her Orbeetle makes some kind of weird noise that can only be described as a robotic chuckle. Marie glances at it suspiciously, briefly, but remembers herself.

"Oh, the tour- yes, I'm so sorry I had to miss it! The boat left just as I finally made it to the dock. Such a shame. I hope you had fun with Avril, at least?" Marie had almost forgotten about the tour, honestly. But there had been a point to it- and she'd seen Avril and June being all blushy-blushy in Petalburg, hadn't she? So perhaps it did work.

"Oh, right… Avril..." June's demeanor takes a sudden turn when Avril's name is brought up however, and she lets out a somber sigh. "Well, the tour was nice, although…" She doesn't even finish her sentence and instead just sort of dwells on whatever happened between the two. Orbeetle zooms towards her, trying its best to nuzzle June, which is moderately successful in cheering her up.

Oh, finally, something interesting out of this girl! While it doesn't seem like the outcome was what Marie intended, drama is certainly fun as well, and she leaps at the chance to find out more with a gentle tone of concern. "Oh, no, did something bad happen?" Maybe it has something to do with Avril's decision...

"I'm not sure if bad is the term I'd use because I don't want to seem as though I'm blaming anyone, but … well, Avril and I had plans to travel through Route 102 and I was really looking forward to it but she just… didn't show up. She hasn't responded to any of my texts either, and I'm not sure why- it seemed as though we were getting along but…" June sighs again. "It's confusing."

"Oh dear… ghosting is such a rude thing to do, especially to a significant other," Marie tsks, shaking her head. "I'm surprised she's managed to avoid you in a small town such as this, though."

"Si-significant other!?" June's fingers partially cover her face, barely hiding how flushed she is. "I'm um, unsure if those are the words- I'm certain Avril would never do such a thing with the intent of being rude!" She cries. "She… she must have a reason..."

"Well she's not dead, injured, or even very busy," Marie says matter-of-factly. "So nothing is preventing her from contacting you. Which makes it seem like she's making a deliberate choice to do this to you. It's unfair, it really is,' Marie sighs. "The things people would do to have a pretty girl such as yourself hanging onto their every word, and Avril just drops you like this. I would never do such a thing to someone who liked me so much!"

"Um, th-thank you, but…" June's expression becomes undecipherable as the various emotions she has clash against each other. "But that can't be true! I-it doesn't make sense- there'd be no reason for her to do such a thing, and- wait a second, if you know she's not busy that must mean you've seen her recently! In that case, um what might she be…"

"Oh, June," Marie croons. "Don't be a fool for love. She's moving on, she told me so. I suppose if you want to find out firsthand, though… she's a waitress now, down at… what was it? Ebb and Flow, I believe. South side of Littleroot, near the ocean."

"M-moving on?? Moving on from what!? And…" June faces the ground, doing her best to hide her eyes. "... should I do so as well?"

Marie considers this. The drama of a reunion would be much more fun to see play out than June and Avril simply going separate ways. Marie's intent had been to get them together, after all- it's Avril that had thrown a wrench in that budding romance.

So, shoving them back together seems like a good move.

"Not without saying your piece, I think," Marie decides. "She should know how you feel. Yes- I'll be your moral support, how about that? Hold your hand while you yell at her, if you need me to."

June blushes while burying her face in her PokeGear, frantically mashing her thumbs against her phone's keypad. "I found it! Ebb and Flow, and it's… closed on Mondays." June sighs. "I suppose that'll have to wait…"

"We'll go tomorrow, then. She seems to work evenings, so perhaps we'll go to dinner together? A little date, one might say." She might be able to get June to treat her, too, in exchange for all this information. It'd be nice to eat a meal outside of the Pokémon Center again.

"That sounds… just swell!" June fidgets with her hair. "The only thing I really have planned for tomorrow is my gym battle, s-so it should all work out just fine! Although, um, to be honest… what Avril and I have, um, this is the second time this week something like that has turned out this way, and since I've decided the Hall of Fame is my goal, well I have to wonder if I should focus solely on that… b-but whatever I had with Avril- I'm not really sure how to phrase it, but- it's something I want!"

Marie huffs out a laugh. "You can multitask, you know. Like, the Hall of Fame isn't going anywhere. Even if you don't get there in the next tournament, you have the one after, and another after that, maybe. It depends on if you choose to make a living out of this, or go get a different job. You have a few years before your parents stop helping you, right? How old are you again?" She doesn't think she ever asked. It hadn't mattered to her.

"Um, I'm fourteen. But I just figured that if I have no luck with these sorts of things I should give up and focus on things I get more visible results from that I'm already good at… but I suppose you're right- I have the time to aim for both,"

    Fourteen?!

That's an actual baby, gross! That's how old her oldest brother is! And June's out here doing romance, and having adventures, and beating gym leaders, on her own- Marie knows younger people do this, of course, but to be face-to-face with that reality is a little jarring. To think! This little kid, on the same journey Marie is, at the same level Marie is…

Wait, she never did find out about that.

Marie collects herself enough to drag a segue from June's last comment. "You're doing well as a trainer, then?"

June nods. "I'd say so! Just yesterday I caught a Heracross, and while it was a difficult battle, I was able to pull through with the help of my Pokemon. That was when Einstein evolved! I'm feeling fairly confident my next gym battle will go well!"

"Your last gym battle must have gone well, for you to be so confident!"

June nods again, her smile widening. "I think my battle against Wally must have been the most challenging battle I've had yet! I challenged him twice, and I actually lost the first time. I won't lie, it was really devastating, but when I rematched him I was able to win the Balance Badge with the effort put in by my Pokemon and I!"

Yep. There it is. This kid really is ahead of her. Fuck.

"Well done! Very impressive," Marie gives June a sweet smile. "It's not everyone that can win against such an incredible opponent."

"Thank you…" Either because of the compliment or the look Marie gives her, June blushes. "If you don't mind me asking, have you battled Wally?"

"Oh- ah, no, I didn't," Marie lies, scrambling for some sort of valid reason as to why she allegedly hadn't. "I met him, yes, but I… wanted to battle him on Thursday, and he doesn't take challenges on Thursdays, so I moved on."

"I see… I was asking because I had figured you would have won, given how um, you're older and more experienced than I am."

"Oh, certainly, certainly, when I pass by again," Marie waves a hand, dismissing the notion. "Wally will be interested to see how strong I've become by then! He was very interested in my progress when we met." Is that a lie? Maybe. Or maybe it's simply… an exaggeration. Wally had been kind and helpful and fun to train with. Of course he'd be interested to see her growth.

If she ever went back to Petalburg.

"It looks like we could both use some training, so in that case… would you like to have a Pokemon battle? Einstein and Chip have been practicing Ally Switch, so I figured it would be beneficial to test that out against another trainer."

    Ugh.

She'd already lost to June once, on Dewford. And June beat Wally, with the added advantage of fighting him twice. Even without any idea of June's usual training regimen… Marie knows she's lagging. All her talk will be for nothing if she can't back it up with action. And she doesn't think she can.

"A simple training bout, hm? Well, I suppose, if you find it helpful... I can allow two of my Pokémon to act as targets. You'll just need them to take hits, yes? Maybe throw in a few of their moves for variety's sake? I don't mind that." As long as June thinks Marie is being lenient with her- yes, this will work.

June taps her lip, thinking about Marie's response. "Well actually I was thinking it'd be more similar to a traditional battle, but I would hate to exhaust you of the energy I'm sure you're saving for an important battle. I suppose I can settle for that." She beams. While it irritates Marie to have June think she needs to conserve her energy, it's far better than letting her think she has the advantage in a fair fight.

    So be it.

    Chapter 4 #07 - Overestimation, Lass

"You need a two-on-two to practise Ally Switch, yes? Pokie could train a bit. And I suppose… Stunnie with him." Marie releases Stunnie next to her and drags Pokie out of the wagon with an "oof".

There's a wide gap between Marie and June that June has created to set the stage for a battle, and June's gaze is frequently switching between her phone and Marie. "I've been wanting to try this one maneuver, so here I go… Chip, use Aqua Jet!"

June's Wimpod engulfs his body in water and dashes towards Stunnie, while her Orbeetle sits back in anticipation. She's obviously going to do something with Ally Switch- that's the whole point of this exercise. But Marie doesn't know exactly what, or when, so she sends Stunnie zipping toward Einstein with the speed of a Sucker Punch while Pokie hangs back to use- Curse is what the PokéDex says, and it's supposed to boost both power and defense but reduce mobility. That's a tradeoff she can take, she thinks, because Pokie doesn't have much mobility to begin with.

Seems that was a good call- right before Chip can make contact with Stunnie is when Einstein decides to activate Ally Switch and shoots a wave of Psychic energy at point-blank range. Marie grits her teeth but Stunnie powers through it- the Dark energy surrounding him almost disappears as it cancels out the psychic waves, but enough is left after Einstein's move vanishes for Stunnie to follow through.

"Oh! I can't say I expected that…" Ally Switch activates again, but only so Einstein can get out of there. Chip takes his place, and he freezes in fear in Stunnie's presence. Stunnie's expression flashes into an equivalent of a maniacal grin and lightning flashes across the battlefield. The super effective attack visibly deals a lot to Chip, but of course he doesn't faint just from that. Instead of countering though, he cowardishly turns around and high-tails it back into his own Pokeball. It's unclear how, but he must have activated another one of June's Pokeballs, because a much bigger and far more dangerous-looking bug stands across from Stunnie, menacingly glaring him down.

"Stunnie, no! You can't use that if you have a teammate, not unless I say!" Marie scolds. The use of Discharge that way is a problem. But so is this Heracross- at least it's something she knows- and she rounds on June as Pokie yawns at the newcomer. "And you- you can't bring another Pokémon into a double battle like that! There's rules, you know."

"I'm so sorry!" June whimpers. "It's just that… well, I figured since we were only sparring that we would be more lenient with the rules!" Contrasting its trainer, June's bigger bug propels itself forward with his wings and swings its horn downwards to fiercely strike Stunnie from above.

"Thundershock!" Marie calls, and as an afterthought: "Pokie, Disable!" The clashing of electricity against horn is grating, but she still has a rebuttal for this slight against her. "There are rules even in training! How are mine supposed to be prepared to train if they don't know what they're training against? How are you supposed to train that Wimpod if he just decides to be done?"

"B-but, I don't have control over if Chip runs away or not! It's his ability, Wimp Out! Personally I think the colloquial name for it is a bit harsh, but Wimpod are naturally very skittish and-" June flinches at the sound of Heracross' palms driving into Stunnie's face, and repeats it twice more in rapid succession. Stunnie definitely looks worse off for that, but completely unwilling to back down. He glows, somehow angrily.

"You'd better train him to have control, then," Marie sniffs. "This would get you a warning in a match- or worse, disqualified entirely."

She'd certainly be more worried about this if she hadn't noticed Pokie's earlier Yawn. June's Pokemon tries its best to stay awake but still ends up passing out. Stunnie gives it a charged-up Thundershock for good measure when it hits the grass, sound asleep.

June's face flashes red in humiliation. "But he can't- well actually you have a point. After all, you know more about these things than I do. Sorry! To think I embarrassed myself in front of a more experienced trainer!"

Marie purses her lips, eyes narrowed. It's weird to hear those words with any degree of sincerity behind them. But June's tone and Marie's experience with the girl says she doesn't have a guileful bone in her body, so she has to let it slide. "There must be some sort of way, or nobody would be able to use that- Wimpod- in a match, yes? Best figure it out." She taps her foot, sizing up her Pokémon. Pokie doesn't show any concern about being zapped earlier, but Stunnie is hanging on mostly out of spite. Another hit and he'll be done. "Are we done here, or are you switching back?"

"Oh, right. Of course." Heracross is returned while Wimpod is sent back out, nervous as ever, and June clears her throat. "Then I'd like to continue practicing the same maneuver I used in the beginning of the match."

She adjusts her glasses and orders another Aqua Jet, this time aimed at Pokie. Einstein predictably uses Ally Switch right before Chip lands a hit and shoots forward a burst of psychic power. Pokie takes this turn of events in stride and shines with power briefly as he Disables Einstein's move. Stunnie, quick on the uptake, is already arcing a Thundershock toward the spot the Orbeetle had abandoned. Chip is struck by it, but miraculously doesn't run away.

"Successfully executing this technique might be more challenging than I initially suspected…" June thinks aloud, tapping her lip. "Although I suppose that could be the skill gap between us. If that's the case, I have to say it's quite impressive, Marie!" June's cheeks go pink for a brief second before she refocuses. "Anyways, if my offensive strategies are so easily stumped, perhaps I should practice Ally Switch in a defensive manner, similarly to how Wally evaded attacks?" Marie starts tapping her foot impatiently but after rambling to herself, June pokes her head up and looks Marie in the eyes. "Marie, could you please have your Pokemon aim projectile attacks towards Chip?"

Marie shrugs. "Sure. Pokie, Stunnie- alternate Water Guns, let's see how fast they can switch."

Pretty fast, as it turns out. Einstein takes some splashes, but Chip skitters past every Water Gun as they press on. Marie supposes if she instructed her two to change up their timing, she could catch June off guard- but she keeps that idea to herself, tucked away for when she'll need to pull out all the stops to take June down later. Because she's sure she will- she's just buying time here, until she's good enough to come out on top in a fair match.

The practise goes on and on in this way. Marie gets bored quickly, eventually just coming to sit between her Pokémon and watching them aim fairly accurate shots. At this point, she doesn't even care what June is doing- not until the girl calls a halt, which Pokie takes a bit more time to recognize than everyone else.

"I believe we've made decent progress with Ally Switch today." June grins, kneeling down to pet Chip who starts purring. "Thank you for your help Marie!"

"Hm? Sure." Marie stands from where she's planted herself on the grass. Her shins are slightly damp from Water Gun splashback, but they'll dry. Stunnie seems irritated that he hasn't landed many hits on Chip, but only grumbles rather than zaps her when she pats and returns him. He must be tired, and that's good. Pokie, too, seems sleepy. It's hard to tell with him.

"Six o'clock tomorrow, yes? Dinner at Ebb and Flow," Marie reminds June matter-of-factly.

June nods. "Right. Although since you suggested I train Chip to stay on the battlefield longer, maybe you could help me with that in the meantime?"

Ugh, more training? And training that's hardly doing a thing for her own Pokémon at that. Her own Pokémon, which are more tired than they should be considering June's perception of their abilities. No, she will not be sticking around. But how to casually exit..?

"Well-" Marie buys time by hefting Pokie back into the wagon. "I have a few things to do yet today. I can't spend all my time here with you, can I? Besides, I'm sure you're clever enough to instruct your own Pokémon in training. You surely didn't even need me for this afternoon!"

"S-sorry, I didn't mean to waste your time." June faces away from Marie, perhaps out of guilt, and twirls her hair with her index finger. "It wouldn't be a bad idea at all to give my Pokemon a rest as well… b-but I do look forward to meeting with you tomorrow! Err, I mean, I'm sure the confrontation with Avril will be difficult and all but, um, well I imagine having your company will make it easier."

"Yes, we can have a nice date even so," Marie purrs, then remembers: Fourteen. Gross. She's really going to have to find out how old the rest of these people are, too. She schools her face into a placid smile as she tugs Pokie's wagon back toward the path. "See you then, June."

June gives her expected response- her face flashes red, her knees tremble, the usual works. "Of course! I'm ecstatic!"

June can't see Marie roll her eyes- just the casual wave she gives without turning back.

  • Name: Kira Wolf || Day: Thursday, September 24 || Time: Evening
    Location: Petalburg City

    So, what now?

Kira gave an exhausted grunt as she leaned against the front of Aaron's Duplex, her hair still somewhat wet from the quick shower she had at the pokemon center. "So Aaron caught... you up on what happened at the lake, right?" Kira asked the trio as they were gathered in the front lawn, interrupting herself briefly with a loud yawn.

"He did, I was honestly surprised to hear it! Pokemon in town are usually very docile, more likely to run off than fight back." Marie remarked.

"It did look rather strange. It's color was a dull pink rather than the bright orange of a typical Corphish." Aaron added, pulling up a picture for comparison on his Holotch.

"Yeah, I went ahead and asked the Nurse at the pokemon center about him while I was there. She said nothing seemed to be wrong, he was just rather agitated for some reason... " Kira said, staring down at the grass.

"Well, we can tell the rangers about him tomorrow. It's best to leave it in their hands I say."

Silently, Kira reached into her pocket and pulled out Nyx's ball. Appearing in the middle of the yard, Nyx gave a similarly loud as she looked over the trio. "I kinda want to let him out...." Kira confessed.

Both Aaron and Marie gave Kira a surprised look, Albeit Aaron's much more angry. "You're kidding me right!? Are you sure that thing didn't hit you upside the head?"

"Alright, I know he can worry too much but I agree with Aaron." Marie added quickly. "It attacked you last time, what makes you think he won't do it again?"

"I feel bad for him! As Marie said, the pokemon around the lake are usually docile, he had to be upset for a reason! Maybe we can figure out a bit more by letting him out." Kira defended, looking over the Corphish's ball. "If he tries to do anything we've got both his ball and Nyx, we should be fine! He doesn't even have the lake this time if he chooses to fight!"

"Kira, this is stupid! Think about this for just a moment!" Aaron argued, giving his sister a stern look.

"Yeah I agree, it's stupid. However I'm leaving tomorrow afternoon after my gym challenge and won't be able to stop thinking about it unless I do this. The last thing I want is to be obsessing over this during the battle." Kira argued "Plus, we can get a better look at it from here. It does have that funky color after all."

Aaron gave a frustrated sigh "It's not like I'll be able to stop you… Past few days are evidence enough of that..."

"Hold on… If you two are really gonna do this I'm pulling up a camera!" Marie quickly interjected, furiously swiping through the options on her holotch. "I wanna get a few pictures for research just in case this is our only chance."

Kira gave Marie a moment to prepare before releasing the Corphish from the ball into the middle of the yard.

The Corphish seemed momentarily surprised, unfamiliar with its surroundings it looked around until It locked eyes with Kira. With a glare, it growled to the best of its ability.

"Nyx, be ready just in case." Kira calmly commanded, keeping the Corphish's pokeball in hand. Nyx gave a small yelp in confirmation as she glared back at the corphish, ready to jump herself.

"It seems fixated on you." Marie remarked as she slowly approached, aiming to take a clear picture. The Corphish seemed to pay Marie no mind whatsoever.

"Yeah, seems like it…" Carefully, Kira shuffled to her left, Nyx following along just in front of her. The Corphish meanwhile tracked her every move, glaring the entire time.

"A-All right, that's all we need right?" Aaron asked with a bit of a stutter.

"Dude, you're sounding like that one boy from the lake." Kira jabbed at her brother before turning her attention back on the Corphish. Curious, she took a weary step towards it, the Corphish in return warily scuttling back. "Why are you so upset with me?" Kira wondered out loud. Slowly, she crouched down in an effort to look a bit less imposing.

"Well, I doubt we're going to find out any more than this tonight considering he doesn't seem to be very cooperative. Perhaps we should call it before he gets spooked?" Marie asked as she put away her own Holotch, satisfied with her pictures.

"Aaron or the Corphish?" Kira asked sarcastically, rolling her eyes as she returned the latter to its ball. "In that case, can I trust you two with him from here?"

"Us? You're the one who caught it!" Aaron protested.

"Actually, that would be you who caught it." Kira retorted with a wry look. "Either way, I plan on leaving tomorrow and for whatever reason he hates my guts. It wouldn't really look that good in front of the rangers if I brought him."

"Fine… I guess we do go by the ranger station on the way to the field anyway." Aaron conceded, taking the ball from his sister.

"We're not gonna chase you out if you wanna stay another day by the way. You don't have to leave immediately after your challenge if you don't want to." Marie spoke up.

Kira quickly shook her head "I don't want to say too long. I got caught up at Dewford for an extra day already so I don't want to fall too far behind the others from my class."

"Alright, well if you chang…" Marie started before being interrupted by a pink figure charging straight after Aaron who responded with a panicked scream. Both of the girls responded with a gasp as he fell to the ground, the pink corphish growling menacingly from his chest.

"The hell!? Nyx!" Kira panicked, quickly searching for her partner with no luck.

    "B-But I thought you…" Marie stuttered, stunned.

"Get the hell away!" Aaron shouted, flailing his arms about. After a few seconds he managed to connect a hit against his assailant. As they were knocked to the ground, the pink corphish's form dissolved away in a cloud of black smoke, leaving behind a small, grey fox laughing uncontrollably.

The three of them silently stared at Nyx for a moment, recovering their breath from the momentary panic attack as the small fox laughed. Eventually, Kira joined in on the laughter herself, chuckling as she picked Nyx up by the scruff. "S-Sorry about that." Kira said in between breaths, trying her hardest to muster a guilty tone.

Aaron had a hand on his chest, trying his hardest to calm himself down. "God damn it… I need some time off after all of this."

    Friday, September 25th @ 1730 - Petalburg Gym

Clint had a few spectators around his gym battle now, less than ideal since he doubted many were rooting for him. He couldn't let himself be distracted by that however, as he still needed to win. On the other side of the ring, Wally seemed to be pumped up by the audience, suppose after many years battling on the competitive circuit made Wally used to having eyes on him.

Clint focused on his breathing, slowed it down in order to refocus himself on the battle playing itself out in front of him. Charmeleon was in Clint's corner, ready for beaten up a little by Sloane earlier, but his tail was still burning hot and bright, which meant he still had some fight left in him. Charmeleon's opponent was Persephone, Leader Wally's Dunsparce. Persephone was much different than Sloane, the Vigoroth Clint had knocked out of battle. While Sloane was all over the place, Persephone was very calm and patient.

Charmeleon started off on the offensive, using Dragon Breath and hitting Persephone with the move. Persephone rolled back a couple of times, then managed to re-gain balance.

"C'mon Perse'y, let's see how far we can push Clint, use Water Pulse," Wally called out.

S***. This wasn't going to go well for Charmeleon. Poor guy, always running into water type moves in these Gym battles. The Water Pulse visibly weakened Charmeleon, as Clint could see his tail flame flickering. Charmeleon still stood tall, Clint had to give props to Charmeleon's resilience. Charmeleon responded to the attack by going back after Persephone, and biting down on her tail with a Fire Fang, and Charmeleon attempted to pick up Persephone by her tail. That plan didn't work, and Charmeleon was forced to drop her down. Persephone's bite marks appeared to be cauterized with the flames of the Fire Fang.

Persephone responded by using Coil, where the Dunsparce curled up as tight as it could. This move, to Clint's knowledge wasn't used very often, but would increase the strength of the Pokemon that used it.

Clint wanted to use this opportunity to get a free strike in on Persephone, and instructed Charmeleon to make his move, but when he got into position, Persephone came out of the coil like she was shot out of a cannon and headbutted Charmeleon directly in the chest. Charmeleon was hit hard by this, he couldn't help but fly back, landing a short distance in front of his trainer. That display from Persephone got a few ooh's and ahh's from the audience following along. I guess one of the perks of being a Hall of Fame trainer was people looking up to you and cheering your moves, as opposed to being the kid nobody knows from another region who dresses way different than anyone in Petalburg would.
"Let me drop a quick word of advice Clint, if something seems too good to be true, it most likely is," Norman lectured,

"Not just in battling, but for life in general."

Clint nodded his head, and sighed. Norman was right, he was silly to think he'd get a free point blank shot in a battle with a trainer like Wally.

Persephone set her sights back on Charmeleon, and shot out another Water Pulse. Charmeleon managed to jump out of the way of the attack. Charmeleon managed to shoot out an Ember at Persephone, the attack hitting Dunsparce but was shaken off by Persephone. Charmeleon wasn't lucky to avoid the second Water Pulse coming his way, an attack that put Charmeleon stomach first on the ground. Charmeleon was struggling, and failing to get back up. Clint also noticed Charmeleon's tail flame flickering, even going out for a second before re-igniting. Clint re-signed himself to the fact he had to withdraw Charmeleon from battle, he wasn't going to be able to keep going. Clint brought Charmeleon back into his Pokeball, and held the ball in his hands, rotating it a couple of times in his hand before re-attaching it to his holster.

"Charmeleon is now no longer eligible to battle. Challenger Clint is now down to his last Pokemon," Norman chimed in.

Clint let Grovyle out of her Pokeball, the shiny turquoise reptile ready for combat. Persephone immediately went into Coil again, strengthening up to do battle with her next opponent. Despite Clint's warning to stay back, Grovyle chased after the coiled up Dunsparce. Just as Clint could see the opponent's Pokemon coming out of the coil, he thought of something quickly,

    "Grovyle, use Detect!"

Grovyle managed to pirouette out of the way as Persephone came flying at her head first, attempting to headbutt Grovyle. Persephone went flying by and hit the ground a few feet away, skidding on the floor of the gym as she landed. Grovyle then used leaf-age, summoning up a small barrage of foilage and aimed it at Persephone. The leaves hit Persephone repeatedly, enough to disturb the snake Pokemon.

Persephone fired back with Ancient Power, a barrage of rocks swirling through the air heading Grovyle's direction. She was unable to avoid them, but ended up only being knocked down briefly by the attack. Rock type attacks weren't too worrisome for Grovyle, her grass type providing a natural resistance. She could resist Water Pulse too, now that Clint gave it some thought. Clint sent Grovyle after Persephone with a Quick Attack, Grovyle slamming into Persephone at full speed, rolling the Dunsparce a handful of times. Persephone recovered, slower than before and turned back towards Grovyle. Persephone launched herself head first at Grovyle, headbutting Grovyle square in the chest. Grovyle fell down from the impact as Persephone sailed overhead. The two Pokemon once again brought their focus to each other, the intensity could have been felt throughout the gym room.

Persephone aggressively shook her tail at Grovyle, while Grovyle let out what could best be described as a war cry. Challenger Clint and Leader Wally exchanged looks at each other, before focusing back on their Pokemon combatants, both of which who were breathing heavily at this point. Both Persephone and Grovyle were ready to give whatever they had left.

Clint and Wally both called out their instructions for their Pokemon, and the chase began. Grovyle sprinted towards the middle of the ring as Persephone slid across the floor of the Gym. They raced towards the middle of the ring, but Grovyle had the speed advantage. Grovyle leaped in the air, in a jump kick formation. The two Pokemon met in the centre, Grovyle kicking Persephone square in the head just as the Dunsparce was getting off the ground trying to headbutt Grovyle. The Dunsparce flipped back from the kick's impact, and Grovyle landed the second kick of the Double Kick as Persephone was still in the air. Persephone landed several feet back, and skidded out of control towards her trainer.

Everyone stood silent as they waited to see if Persephone would get back up, but as the seconds passed it became more and more unlikely. Eventually, Norman decided to call the battle,

"Persephone is no longer able to battle, Challenger Clint wins!"

A huge feeling of relief rushed over Clint, causing him to drop down onto one knee. Even though he wasn't the one in the ring battling, he still felt exhausted after the intensity of the battle he just took part of. Grovyle came back over to where Clint was kneeling, panting hard as she did so. She climbed on Clint's back, slumping her head over his shoulder.

Clint looked over to Wally, who had brought Persephone back into her Pokeball. Wally looked slightly irritated, stroking his chin as he thought about the events that had transpired. Norman walked over to Wally, and gave Wally a recap of how he thought Wally did.

"Great job Wally," Norman began before Wally chimed in.

"Not sure how much of a great job I did if I lost," Wally interrupted.

"It isn't about you winning or losing Wally. Its about gauging the progress of those who come here to challenge the gym. You set the standard, and its up to the challenger to adapt and overcome. No amount of challengers that come through here can ever take away what you've accomplished. Being a gym leader is about the next generation of trainers, and today you pushed a member of that next generation as hard as he's likely ever been pushed. You did what needed to be done."

Norman and Wally then walked over to Clint, who stood up with Grovyle on his back as the two came up to him.

"Your Pokemon are strong and very capable Clint, you should be very proud of them," Wally said.

"I am, very much so," Clint said, patting a very tired Grovyle on the head,

"Thank you for accepting my challenge, it was an honor."

"The honor was all ours Clint, I have a couple things for you. First, lets get the winnings out of the way. $5000, don't spend it all in one place. Secondly, the Balance Badge. Its proof that you won your challenge here. Wear it with pride, not everybody has one of these," Wally said, handing Clint the balance badge.

The Balance Badge was two circles, with a straight line between them, the badge reminded Clint of a dumbbell.

"Lastly, I have a TM for you, Protect. Using it will protect the Pokemon who uses it from any attack. Warning with that though, it will likely fail if used in succession."

"If you haven't been east yet, that's the direction I would go. Merry Richtide is over in Littledale, and thats where you will find your next gym challenge. If you build on what you showed me today, I like your chances."

"Thank you Leader Wally, and Leader Norman thank you as well."

Clint left the Gym a winner, and now it was time to rest up and prepare to head east to Littledale.

    - Clint received the Balance Badge!
    - Clint received $5,000!
    - Clint received TM Protect!

  • Edison Kintobor
    Monday, September 28th; afternoon
    Oldale Town

After her Gym battle, Tsu headed back to Oldale to visit the Pokémon Center, but not before she, Ed, and Sunny discussed her prize outside the Gym.

"So... how does this work?" Tsu asked, looking at her new TM.

"It's quite simple." Ed pointed out the features as he explained them. "By placing a Poké Ball within the device, you can instantly teach a new move to your Pokémon. Provided they're compatible with the technique, of course."

Tsu nodded slowly, until Sunny stepped up to demonstrate. "Here, watch." She took Tsu's TM, placing a Poké Ball of her own into it and showing Tsu which buttons to press. "And just like that, a new move is learned."

"Oh, that's neat! What TM did you get, Ed?"

Ed was looking at Sunny curiously, wondering which Pokémon she just taught a new technique. He hadn't considered the possibility of sharing TMs, but he couldn't recall reading any rule that prohibited it. Tsu's question grabbed his attention, and he dutifully pulled the device from his satchel. "I won the Bulldoze TM, a Ground type attack that sends shockwaves through the earth."

"That's pretty cool! Hey, do you think any of my Pokémon can learn it?"

Ed checked his Pokédex, comparing the move to her team. "Yes, it looks like your Gyarados and Nosepass can learn it. Why?"

"Can I borrow it? Stacy would love to learn a new move! All she has is biting or landing on her opponents right now. Kind of hard to plan a Contest performance around, you know?"

Ed hesitated, but a pleading look from Tsu and a nudge from Sunny convinced him to share. As a reusable TM, he taught both Stacy and Cyrano the move, along with Sunny's Aron, Striker. Only Addie on his own team could learn it, but he was happy with Addie's current moves, and didn't want to replace any of them just yet.

With none of his team willing or able to use any of the TMs, Ed felt like he'd drawn the short stick in this particular exchange. Tsu assured him she'd return the favor someday, before heading to the Pokémon Center. Ed and Sunny, not particularly needing to return there, instead went to a café for some drinks.

Sitting here now, Ed thinks back to his discussion with Marie earlier in the day. "Sunny, I've been thinking. Can we talk about something?"

Sunny removes the lid of her iced tea, trying to fish out some boba with a spoon, since the straw is too small. "That's what these places are for. What's up?"

"It's... well, I know we've had our ups and downs lately, and I wanted to talk about... us. And more specifically, you and your actions."

Sunny avoids eye contact, gripping the edge of the table. "Can we not?" She asks hopefully. "Look, I know I've made some mistakes, we don't need to bring them up, right?"

Ed takes a deep breath, exasperated but staying calm. He'd expected she'd try to avoid the subject, but communication is key. "Please, just listen. I know I got mad before, but I'm calm now. I think I understand where you're coming from, and I'm willing to forgive you.

"However." Ed holds up a hand before Sunny can interrupt. "You clearly need to work some things out. We need to establish better boundaries, and you can't just do whatever you want and expect me to go along with it. I'd also appreciate it if you didn't hit me so frequently."

"Hearing a lot of things I need to change, Eddie. You trying to say something?" Sunny isn't avoiding his gaze now, but is meeting it with a scowl.

"Don't get mad at me, Sunny, you're the one causing problems. All I'm asking is that you respect what I'm doing and not be so possessive all the time."

"Possessive?! What's that supposed to mean?"

"Well... that's how it was described to me. You don't respect my-"

"Described by who?" Sunny leans closer, getting mad the more Ed speaks. "Have you been talking about me behind my back? What, you couldn't come talk to me?"

"Sunny, calm down." That seems to upset her more, but Ed keeps talking. "We're talking now. I just needed to sort out my thoughts, and you know that sort of thing takes time. Having a sounding board expedited the process, is all."

"I am not possessive! I thought we were doing this together! I can't just stop what I'm doing every time you want to go visit some Professor or something! I'm just trying to motivate you, you know? Like a friend? Where would you be without me?"

"You know there's no way I could know that, it's not scientifically possible. But think... you 'shouldn't have to stop every time I want to do something'? Am I a hindrance to you? What's wrong with us each going at our own pace? Why do I need to rush and hurry because of your impatience?"

"Okay, fine. We've tried it your way. We've spent days in this town, and what have we accomplished?"

"We fought a Gym Leader. We met up with Miss Tsu, and you caught yourself a new Pokémon. You thought I didn't notice, but I did." That catches Sunny off guard, but Ed keeps going. "I had a nice talk with the Professors, including Professor Wisteria. She even told me of a place in Mauville I can get my Holotch looked at." He pulls the note from his pocket triumphantly. "That's the one thing that you wanted to do, plus a handful of extra perks we would have missed out on if we'd-"

Sunny snatches the note from his hand, looking it over.

Ed sighs in frustration. "This is exactly what I meant about boundaries! You didn't ask, you just grabbed. And you interrupted me. You see what I mean about you not respecting me?"

"What is this?" Sunny looks at the note, in particular the number at the bottom. "Why is her name on this?"

"Oh." Ed had forgotten about that. "I met Marie outside the lab, we talked a bit. She left me her number so I could call her when my Holotch gets fixed."

"So when you called me possessive, those were her words." The paper crumples as she clenches her hands into fists, which Ed protests.

    "Sunny, I needed that!"

"I can't believe you'd go to her for help! She's trying to drive us apart, can't you see that? You shouldn't hang out with her!" She tosses the paper onto the table in frustration.

Ed frowns, as evidence for Marie's theory continues to accrue. "You don't get to make that decision. I get that you don't like her, but she's still a friend to me. And you throwing one of your little tantrums won't change that."

That was the wrong thing to say.

"Little... well excuse me for having emotions, Eddie! Sorry I'm not some machine you can tinker with and just fix, like your watch! But you can't even fix that!" She grabs her cup, splashing the iced drink into Ed's face.

He recoils from the shock of cold, and Sunny gasps at her outburst.

"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to... I shouldn't have said... I gotta go!" She bolts from the table, her chair clattering to the ground as she leaves.

"Sunny, wait!" Ed calls after her, but she doesn't stop. He sighs, grabbing a napkin to clean himself off. Luckily none of the drink got on the note paper, and all the information is still readable. "I'm not sure I deserved that."

    Chapter 3 - Part 4: Brave Enough
    18:00 - 19:00, Enomoto Conservatory
Petalburg City is one of the places I had been hoping to visit at some point. Not only because it's the place in which Mr. Wally started his journey, but because I read there was a Pokémon Conservatory here as well, and it's the best place to start a more thorough research on pokémon.

I have to admit that I did not expect Miranda to be so excited to be here, but she is. I thought she would find it boring, but she insisted after she asked what I had planned for today. She must have a lot of energy to be running around like a little kid, looking at the pokémon living here. It's cute in a way.

She's an interesting person, to say the least. She's given me nothing but surprises since the day I met her. The fact that she came to the region without knowing anything at all is enough of a surprise already, and she's also a fast learner.

Of course, her behaviour can be problematic. It's hard to interact with her because her emotions are like fireworks continuously exploding in different directions. When she's excited about something, she runs around like she is right now and doesn't stop talking; but when she's angry or annoyed, well… you know what happens.

"Mankey, look! There's more of you over here!" Miranda cheers, running to some kind of playground with treehouses in which two other Mankey are hanging out.

Miranda's Mankey hops into the playground and starts calling the other Mankey that just noticed him there and they invite him to the top of the tree with them. The girl laughs with a big grin and goes to see the other pokémon, leaving Mankey behind.

"Miranda, are you sure this is alright? Mankey tend to be really aggressive."

"PokéDex said they live in groups." Miranda shrugs. "Mankey likes to play and doesn't like his PokéBall, so I'd rather have him hang out with more of his kind than attacking other pokémon."

"But aren't you afraid that he may get lost?"

"I can recognize him and I know how to call him too."

I don't like how carefree she is with her pokémon. Mankey could easily get separated from the group and get lost while we are away. It's exactly because of her recklessness that she ends up with her hand zapped, but I can't tell her anything because she doesn't like to listen to what I say unless someone else tells her to do so!

As we walk further, the areas stop being playgrounds and turn into flower fields full of flying bug type pokémon. Someone did tell me the conservatory had a lot of bug types, actually, and it's also one of the reasons I wanted to come here.

"Bugs might not be the strongest creatures, but I think a lot of people underestimate them and their importance for the planet. Wimpod, for example: Their role in nature is to consume trash and other contaminants, acting as nature cleaners; however, they also serve as food for other pokémon, such as wild bird pokémon."

"What would you do if a bird pokémon takes Juggernaut?"

"Oh, were you listening to what I was saying?" I snap after hearing Miranda's words; turns out I was thinking out loud. I giggle. It's fine, I guess. She doesn't seem to be bothered by it. "That's a good question. Wild pokémon have to look for food on their own, so if one just happens to choose Juggernaut, I think I shouldn't be mad about it, it's just how nature works. However, Juggernaut and I have been taking care of each other for years now; I would be sad if something were to happen to him…" As I say that, I rub Juggernaut's exoskeleton with my fingers, he lowers his antennae as he curls into a ball on my arms. "I think I'd try to save him. I don't know how, though."

    Miranda doesn't say anything.

"I try to make sure he has all he needs to grow so he becomes the juggernaut he is destined to be. What a wild pokémon does to him will be less worrying once that happens."

She still doesn't answer. Maybe she doesn't even know what Wimpod evolves into. I take my smartphone to show her a picture.

"This is Golisopod. It's what Wimpod grows up to be like."

Miranda's eyes instantly go wide open and I can see the glow on them.

"Golisopod!? This is awesome! You mean Juggernaut turns into that thing!? No middle stage or anything!?"

    I nod.

"How does that even happen!? It's too big! And it also doesn't look like the evolution of this..."

"Coward? I mean, you're not wrong, but Golisopod still run away from battles they can't win; the difference is that they can stand a chance in battle. You see, in the wild there comes a moment in which Wimpod just have to stop fleeing and defend themselves from predators to survive," I start explaining. "However, against strong predators, they won't stand a chance; that's when the stronger Wimpod that have been holding down on evolution evolve."

"What? They hold down on-- That means they choose not to evolve, right? Why would they choose to be the weak thing over the strong thing?"

"Survival? Wimpod are smaller and faster than Golisopod, meaning they can find food more easily, since most of it is on the ground. Golisopod leading and protecting a Wimpod group eat the food they gather, but lone Golisopod have to eat the pokémon they beat in battle."

Miranda nods, although it seems she didn't understand most of it, judging by her expression.

"So you say you want Juggernaut to become that thing?," she says after her long pause.

    I nod.

"... That's cool and all, but… shouldn't you be doing some battling then?"

I look away for a second, trying to find an answer for that question. She's got a point.

"I still don't know what you're doing here, but you got that license thing, don't you? That means you came here to battle."

'I'm here because I want to follow on Mr. Wally's steps.' That's the answer I want to give because that's the truth.

But there's something holding me back from giving that answer.

Maybe it's because of the fact that I know I can't follow his steps.

I've lived in fear. Fear of what the outside world -people and pokémon- might do to my health. Fear of losing Juggernaut a second. Fear of being laughed at again for finding inspiration in the story of a trainer with a condition similar to mine made it to the top.

Wally Greene's story is the reason I am in Hoenn, but despite all of my admiration for him, I'm not brave enough to go out and follow his example.

    "... I- I don't know."

"You don't know?" The girl frowns at me. "How do you not know!? You went through a whole paperwork to get that piece of shit and don't know why you did it?"

"Y- yes! Maybe. I don't know. I might've had a reason back then, but it was probably in the moment and just… forgot about it afterwards." I laugh nervously and then clear my throat. "Um a-anyways… Look! The one that looks like it has a scarf is a Ribombee," I say, pointing at a yellow winged pokémon flying over some flowers. I have to change this topic and do some thinking about this myself to calm down. "They are normally friendly creatures, although they can be pretty aggressive if provoked. I don't know if they can be found here in Hoenn, but there are some in Galar. What's particularly interesting about them, is that they are one of the few pokémon capable of using the move Powder, which protects them from fire type attackers. It's a move that's only known to be learned by the Cutiefly evolutionary line and Vivillon."
    20:00, Petalburg's Pokémon Center

Miranda was pretty quiet during the rest of our stay in the conservatory. The only time she said something was when she called Mankey back to brag about how she knew how to recognize him in a passive aggressive way.

The more I thought about it, the more confused I was about being here and the quicker I thought I should find the answer.

"Miranda." The girl knits her brows and turns her head at me. "I've been thinking about it and I'm cancelling tomorrow's class."

    "What? Why?"

"It's about what we were talking about earlier. The whole thing with Juggernaut and my Trainer's License. I have to do some thinking."

She takes her time to come up with an answer, but her expression getting more intense says everything. As if Mankey's humor was in synchrony with hers, he stands in front of me and growls. My hand instantly goes to one of my LuxuryBalls, however, Miranda realizes Mankey's attitude and blocks him with her bat.

"You could've trained Juggernaut yesterday when I asked you for a battle." She turns around and starts walking away. "Whatever. Do what you want, I don't give a shit. Let's go, Mankey."

    Oldale

At the northern end of Oldale lies the road toward Mauville, as much as a small body of water can be called a "road". After fleeing from a possible confrontation with her best friend, Sunny paces back and forth along the road, never officially stepping outside of the town boundary. It is entirely the fault of the sign, proclaiming this "Route 103". A part of her brain- a childish, romantic part -can't help but remember how she and Edison had left Mahono town together, taking their first steps onto Route 301 together. And taking these steps without him just seems… wrong. Like a betrayal.

"Not like you haven't done that lately…" She mutters darkly to herself. "What's the harm in doing it again? Why not just leave? I can just go off on my own, do my own thing! Who needs him?!" She shouts at the trees, but they don't answer her.

Clearly it's the stress. Between the everyday challenges of a Pokémon Journey, that damn Professor woman getting in her head, and just generally not knowing where she stands with Eddie and Tsu, Sunny can't recall ever feeling more anxious. "...And I'm talking to myself again."

    "Ah."

Sunny turns at the sound of another voice, and of all people, Marie Rachelle Mocinno saunters out from the treeline, lazily twisting a pen between the fingers of one hand and holding a small notebook loosely in the other.

"Oh." Sunny replies, her look more of a sulk than a glare. "Of course I'd run into you."

"And I figured I'd see you soon. Where Edison goes, you're never far behind, after all." Marie tugs her drawstring bag around to stow her pencil and notebook and switch them with… something plain. It might be a book. "Did you win a badge?"

Sunny instinctively moves her hand to her jacket, where Benji's badge is still pinned. "I… yeah. Yeah, I- why? Why do you want, I mean… what about you?" She curses under her breath. That was not smooth, Sunny.

"Oh wow, how many is that for you, then? Three or four?" Marie asks, suspiciously lightly.

"Uh…" In a brief panic, Sunny can't remember how many badges Marie has. Brawly's, for sure, not Benji's… Should I say four, to be safe? No, that's suspicious, no one has them all... She shakes her head to clear her thoughts. "What do you want, Marie? Can't you see I'm busy, here?"

Marie tilts her head. "Busy talking to yourself? I was busy until you startled my research subject, so at least you could have a polite conversation with me."

"Okay, fine. I can be polite." Sunny glares at that last part. She doesn't know why Marie always throws her off her game so much, but she hates that she does. "What were you researching? Eddie and I just finished a report on Seedot."

"Congratulations," Marie says in what might be a sincere tone, Sunny can't tell. "We were watching a Noctowl. Oh-" Realization flashes across her face, breaking the light and neutral expression she'd settled on. "Hold on."

Sunny nods once as Marie wanders back into the woods a short way and retrieves a red wagon from behind a bush. That Slowpoke from the Point sits comfortably inside, even as Marie exerts actual effort to drag it over tree roots.

Sunny frowns at Slowpoke, knowing it's not fair to blame the Pokémon, but still feeling a little put out just seeing it. She winces as Marie hauls it over a root, even though Slowpoke doesn't react. "Okay, I know you have a ball for it, why are you dragging it with you?"

"Same reason you drag Edison around. I like him and he's cute." Marie shrugs.

"Okay, that…" Sunny cuts herself short, her fist shaking slightly. "Let's not talk about Eddie right now. I am not dragging him anywhere, alright? I'm not."

"If you say so." Marie clearly is disbelieving, but goes to pat the Slowpoke and accidentally bops him on the head with whatever is in her hand. "Ah. Yes. Um, this is for you."

She offers the object to Sunny. It's rectangular and wrapped in plain brown paper. Sunny looks at it in confusion, not reaching for it as she eyes Marie suspiciously. "What is it?"

    "A gift."

"Well, duh. But what…" Marie has that look on her face, that one that Sunny hates so much, so she knows there's no point in arguing. "Oh, fine. Give it here." She steps forward, grabbing for the Mystery Gift. Marie allows it to be taken, no fuss at all.

Sunny cautiously opens it, and sure enough, it's a book. Specifically, a hardbound black notebook with a raised image of a Slugma on the cover. The Slugma is... squishy? And full of a glittery gel and little fire-shaped beads. Sunny runs a hand over the lava slug, and the beads squish around inside the gel. There's a little orange pen slotted into a holder on the side.

"This is… pretty cool, actually…" Sunny pokes the Slugma a couple times before looking at Marie suspiciously. "Why are you giving me this? I thought you hated me."

Marie inhales sharply. "No! Nonono, I don't even- I don't even dislike you, I…" She cups an elbow in her hand and the other comes up to tug at her bouncy hair. "You gave me a Lure Ball, indirectly. So I had to give something back. That's only fair. And I didn't like how angry you were at the Point."

Sunny laughs bitterly, once. "Yeah, neither did I… I'm, uh, going through some stuff. You know how it is."

    "I suppose."

There is a long, awkward silence as the two look at each other, neither knowing what to say or do next.

"Well, um, I don't think the Noctowl is coming back. So I'm going to…" Marie gestures south, in a vague indication of leaving.

"Yeah, of course, um..." Sunny feels her face heating up as she clutches the book to her chest, idly kicking at the discarded paper wrapping. "Thank you? I guess we're even now… for now, I mean. I'll… I'll see you later. Or, I'll be seeing you later…" She tries to sound tough and menacing.

Marie doesn't look particularly afraid. "Yes. Probably. Pick up that wrapper before you leave, hm? Littering is illegal here, you know. Ta."

She strides off, the wagon rolling much more easily behind her on a real road as opposed to forest.

Sunny watches her go, keeping a foot on the wrapper so it doesn't blow away. After she's out of earshot, Sunny mutters, "Yeah, well… they let trash like you be… here… that's terrible, what's wrong with me? That's a lame comeback…"

    Chapter 4 #09 - Owl Details

Noctowl are a primarily nocturnal species- their common name is an indication of that behavior- but I observed one in a hollow tree on the northern edge of Oldale even in the late afternoon. No others seemed to be around, and I was in that area for a while. The one I did see appeared to be smaller than the average height listed in the PokéDex- that being five-foot-three and this one perhaps around four feet- but it had a short "beard", which I read is generally indicative of an older age. It was fully asleep until I stepped on a branch and alerted it, then it watched me without moving or blinking for several minutes. Its eyes glowed pink at one point. I don't think it did anything to me, but my Slowpoke fell asleep out of the blue, so it must have used Hypnosis on him. I couldn't find any other techniques that would produce a similar effect in Noctowl's technique list, so that must have been it.

The Noctowl did not do anything else until someone nearby shouted- it then puffed up its feathers and swooped out of the hollow. It seemed healthy and capable despite being so small. It did not make any noise- no hooting or screeching, and as soon as it was gliding it was silent in the air. Some dirt and a stick fell out of the tree when it flew away. It went north and west, which I assume it knew was away from town and humans.

I looked in the tree after it left. There were no eggs, just a bunch of droppings, so it probably wasn't a nest. Perhaps it's not egg season, so they don't need to build nests yet. Or perhaps its nest is elsewhere, guarded by another of its species. There are no obvious indications of sex in this species, so I do not know if that had any effect on the behavior observed.

    Hey Marie!
Thanks for the update on the local Noctowl! You're right- it's not quite breeding season yet, so there wouldn't be any eggs, even if that were its nest. Noctowl prefer to make a nest not in the trees but in sheltered but solid areas- steep hills like the dells and small cliff caves are preferred.

Keep an eye out for a Pidove- it'll be bringing you five Chesto berries. They should help next time you encounter something that might put your Pokémon to sleep!

    Cheers,
    Brendan Birch

    The old spark
    Monday, September 28th - evening - Littleroot-Oldale township, near Brendan's lab
"Alright Tsu… we are supposed to go look for some Pokémon, right?" Avril asks as soon as the two girls are out of Brendan and May's lab. Finally. "Should we do it now? I… look, I need something to distract myself from what happened. It's still so much to process…"

Tsu looks over at the sun, squinting against the light. "I think we have time. If we go back toward Oldale we can probably find some Pokémon in Trainers' Corridor to observe before it gets too dark."

"Oh, that's good news!" Avril smiles, as Poppy takes off and floats in front of her. "Thank you Tsu, hopefully this will be fun."

"I don't think he'd recommend it if it wasn't!" Tsu laughs, pulling out her phone. "I think we have to leave the main road, check out some areas off the beaten path… should I buy a real camera? I could probably get better pictures if I did… sorry, I'll focus."

"I'm no expert but… I think you'll be fine. The photo you took back then looks nice to me, you know!"

With Poppy already going on ahead, Avril prompts her friend to follow her. "She's our self proclaimed scout, I guess… we shouldn't make her wait. But… hm, I wonder what kind of Pokémon there are around here? I haven't really checked just yet…"

"I think it's just wild versions of the Pokémon they farm around here. Wooloo and Skiddo, stuff like that." Tsu follows behind Avril and Poppy, checking the Ranger Database on her phone.

"If it's just them, then it's great! And ooh, I'd actually love to find a Skiddo, my family had some and they were just so cute…" Avril sounds cheerful and enthusiastic as she speaks up. "You heard it, right Poppy?" She asks her Pokémon, who chirps back promptly.

"Apparently they're kind of rare, but maybe we can find some if we go… this way…" Tsu looks at the map on the database, which shows general information on the Pokémon in the area. "Near the blue parts, which might be water? Makes sense, I guess."

Eventually, Poppy does point Avril towards what she's been eagerly looking for, a small herd of Skiddo passing by the Trainers Corridor. While on one hand, the girl turns around way too often to make sure Tsu is still close to her, on the other she's following those Pokémon very intently, giving it her all just to run after them. "They ought to stop soon, so we can… oof, they're fast. Whatever…"

Tsu tries to keep up, keeping her camera ready in case a good shot presents itself. She stops at one point to catch her breath, happening to look to her side to see just such a shot. She quickly takes a photo of a small pond just down the hill from where she's stopped, calling out to Avril, "Aww, Avril! Look at the babies!"

From further ahead, the blonde girl takes a few seconds to focus on what Tsu wants her to see. She's still busy keeping the pace of the Skiddo, or rather, having to let them run further away as they distance themselves from the path the girl's following. But once she and Poppy calm down and turn towards the direction that their friend pointed at, a wide smile reappears on their faces, followed by another "Aww!"

The babies in question are a pair of Azurill by the pond, one happily balancing on a lily pad while the other nervously watches from the shore.

Tsu looks back to where the Skiddo they'd been following had gone. "You know, we could just observe these guys for a bit. Maybe write a report on them? It might be better than chasing Skiddo all night."

Given how much Avril's panting, it's a no brainer. "G-good idea!" She remarks, slightly nervous for putting herself in that situation. "I wonder what they're doing though…"

That question is answered eventually, but not before Avril and Tsu spend a couple of minutes just gushing about how cute those Pokémon are. The Azurill standing on the shore lets its tail float on the water for a bit, then turns around and tries to immerse one of its legs instead, all while crying out towards the other Azurill.

"Oh, is it just… learning to swim?" The blonde girl tries to get Tsu's attention. "It just… looks like baby me going through the same process! But… we have to write that down for this report, correct? Hopefully it's enough info…" She continues, as she gets her Holotch from her bag and starts to type in a few sentences in the Notes app.

Tsu lets Avril take notes, preferring instead to take some more pictures. These Pokémon really are too cute, even doing something as simple as going for a swim. She wishes she had a better camera, and makes a mental note to look for one next time she's in town.

If it hadn't happened before already, now Avril's heart is almost melting as a Marill appears from underwater, and with a smile tries to lead the nervous Azurill into water. The evolved Pokémon clearly has no trouble with swimming and, in fact, even the girl's Pokédex confirms that it's a Water and Fairy type now - unlike Azurill, who is Normal and Fairy instead.

It's a cute scene, there's no denying that, but it's also a very timely one. Given what Avril's been through, it just makes sense, and, even more important - it makes her feel less alone. Everyone may struggle with something, maybe more than others, but help is always in reach.

Tsu notices the look on Avril's face. She's smiling, looking at the Azurill below with a look of… determination? It's a good look for her, makes her look confident. Tsu turns her camera on Avril, taking a picture before the moment can pass.

"O-oh?" Avril turns around towards Tsu as she notices her phone appearing inside her field of view.

"Don't mind me!" Tsu grins as she waves her phone. "Just taking a picture for myself, not the report!"

"I see…" The blonde girl blushes. "Well, can I look, please?"

"Oh, sure!" Tsu pulls up the picture, turning the screen to her friend. "I wouldn't keep it without your permission."

"It's no problem!" Avril nods, as Poppy also takes a glance at the photo. She then can't help but smile again at how good that shot is. Tsu seems to have really captured what Avril was feeling! "That's another… good moment we had, correct?"

"Definitely! And I have the pictures to prove it."

"You'll have to send me that one as well, then…" Avril laughs. It feels genuine, free of all the tension she built up at the Research lab. "And we can finish up the report at the Pokémon Center with what I've typed so far!"

"I'll be sure to send you those photos, too!" Tsu joins Avril in laughing, and even Poppy chirps happily. It feels good. She's glad to see her friend have a bit of that old spark back, and despite her initial misgivings, doing this report was kinda fun! Or at least, taking pictures was.

With that, the girls head back toward Oldale and the Pokémon Center to write up their report.

This report was written with the help of Natsuko, and is our first assignment for the both of us. Right after visiting your lab, we looked for some wild Pokémon to observe, and found the cutest group of Azurill in a nearby pond. So that would be Littleroot, about 7 p.m. on Monday.

What we saw was two Azurill and a Marill, being involved in what looked like swimming lessons. One of the two baby Pokémon looked tense and somewhat afraid of the water as it made acquaintance with the pond, while the other seemed more at ease and stood on top of a lily pad.

If Marill is a part Water type but Azurill isn't, then we assume that it's the familiarity with water and the ability to swim that is able to trigger the evolution. And case in point, Marill is perfectly capable of swimming and staying underwater for a long time.

We also noticed how the different balls at the end of each Pokémon's tail behaved in water. The nervous Azurill's was probably the worst at floating, while Marill's was perfect for the job and let the Pokémon even control its movement more easily while in water. Given the Pokédex entries we already read, we think that this ability to float is related to the…

"What's the word here? Hm… come on Avril!"

...lack of nutrients in it. So, the more the nutrients in the tail are used up by Azurill, the lighter the ball becomes and the easier it is for it to float. That may also have to do with the oil that the Pokédex says Marill is able to produce.

Marill themselves seem to be very kind and patient with their little friends. They help the Azurill with swimming with motherly care, trying their best to make them more confident in their own swimming capabilities. They also bring them food and teach them how to gather it!

The Pokédex said another thing- Azurill seem to evolve by happiness. That's what we couldn't really explain but, by just imagining how good it could feel for a little Azurill to finally learn how to swim and live in water, well… the thought of that motherly care playing a large role in that really made our day.

We hope you enjoy reading this report and find it at least a bit useful!

    ~ Avril and Natsuko

    The big questions
Tuesday, September 29th - morning - Enomoto Farm, Oldale
Avril is used to waking up early: more often than not, it's the sun filtering through the window that gets her going, and once it's bright enough, there really is no turning back for her. She can't get any more rest, even if she tries to.

But this is even earlier than she's used to, and it throws her off. She clumsily turns off the alarm she's set and forgot about, trying to get a few more minutes of sweet sleep, until she finally remembers what that annoying noise was for. She was going to the Enomoto farm at sunrise, working there for a little money and hoping to meet June as well.

She finally sits on the bed, her head spinning, her eyes wide open. Poppy looks at her as if she'd been waiting hours for her to get up, but soon lets out an Aromatherapy to soothe her trainer ever so slightly. With that fragrance in the air, the girl gets up, gathers her stuff, and… oh true, good idea, Poppy!

Avril is not exactly on time when she's finally on the doorstep of the Enomoto farm, but she's gained back some time by skating there, all while providing Poppy with more effortless fun. A pair of shoes hang awkwardly from her cloth bag, being simply tied to it by their laces, but it's the best solution Avril has found. Needless to say…

Her face is very much red.

The door creaks open, and she's meet by Akira, who exhibits a wide grin on her face upon eye-contact. "Why, if it ain't Avril! Howdy!" She greets while giving her a strong handshake. "Glad t'see ya made it!"

The gesture makes Avril wobble on her skates, all while Poppy chuckles ever so slightly. "Yeah, t-thank you! Hope I'm not too late, but at least I never fell… I guess."

"Ya missed the early mornin' milkin', but we was just about to groom our livestock! Sure I don't need to introduce 'at to ya." Akira chuckles.

"Oh oops!" Avril runs a hand through her hair. "Right, I'll come soon, I just need to get ready for that. I'm going inside for a bit if that's ok?" The girl is already trying to look past Akira, looking for a place to change out of her skates. Or rather, Ebb and Flow's…

"Sho 'nuff!" Akira exclaims, making way for Avril. "An' if yer hungry, Giorgia fixed breakfast and has leftovers, so help yerself!"

The girl rolls inside with a nervous smile, but that immediately gives way to relief as she finds the leftovers Akira mentioned, as well as Giorgia washing dishes. "Oh, hello there! And… thanks." yes, I skipped breakfast this morning, just to get here in time. "I'll change out of the skates right away, just remember they're just… yes, rented! Could they stay here while I work?"

"Oh, why hello there! What a delight- we could always use help around the farm." Giorgia beams. "Please, place your skates wherever you need!"

"Nice, and as for work…" Avril's eye falls on one of her bracelets while she's sitting down. Right, you had one job, girl! The charm on her wrist works just as expected.

"Uhm, is June around here this morning, by any chance?"

"I'm afraid not." Giorgia shakes her head. "Akira had informed me of your situation with Junko, so I am sorry I have to inform you of that. But I'm sure you two will cross paths while you're both in Littledale."

"Oh, I see… thanks. Thinking more about it… yeah, I don't feel too good about what happened with her, but I have to let her know if…" Avril is just thinking aloud.

"Let her know what exactly?" Giorgia asks.

"If… we want to be close again, right?" The girl replies hastily. "Look, I did something that was not good and felt too guilty to explain, but if she's understanding even in that situation maybe I can… you know, solve this!"

"I think that's a swell attitude to have! You said it yourself, she's a very forgiving girl, so I'm sure it will turn out well!"

Avril's cheeks are now definitely more red from the blushing than from the skate trip to the farm. "Aw, that's… good news! Thanks again…"

"It's no problem." Giorgia gives a warm smile. "Relationships are difficult to figure out- I would know- so I'm always willing to hand out advice on the subject. After you've been helping us out around the farm it's the least I can do- aside from paying you, of course."

"R-Relationships…" She really said it! "Maybe we're not there just y-yet but s-sure, it should be good advice regardless…" Avril mutters, trying to place the pieces together. Her only real measuring stick here is Lucas and Vanessa, and she doesn't even know too much about it because her brother has never been too happy to have her around when he's being all cute and flirty with his girlfriend. It does make sense, sure, flaunting relationships in public is just not typical in Avril's area in general, but it sure doesn't help her now.

"Oh right, I really must say, this is so good!" The girl briefly changes topic, as she finally munches some food. "It's surely going to help with work… haha."

"Of course, of course- when you're married to a mountain of a woman, it's something that comes naturally after a while." Giorgia softly giggles. "But as far as 'not being there just yet' goes- there's no need to rush yourself. These things take time, afterall."

"Yeah… right. I'm still figuring things out, it's 'my first time' if you will." Avril takes a heavy breath. It takes time… and that means staying here in Hoenn anyways. One more reason, I suppose…

"We all have to start somewhere. Although speaking of starting- perhaps we should head outside? We wouldn't want to keep Akira waiting."

"O-oh oops!" Avril jumps up, nearly startling Poppy, who was resting on her head. "Sure, I'm ready to go."

    🐑🐑🐑

This time, instead of the Miltank, Akira leads Avril to the building right beside it, where all of the farm's Wooloo are kept. "They're just… so cute!" She gushes towards the farmer, happy that her first impression was this positive. "These Pokémon are here to get… their wool, right?"

"We do farm 'em for their wool, yeah, but we ain't here to shear 'em just yet. That don't come 'til a while, so right now we're just here to groom 'em."

"Oh, that's just fine!" If not even better. "I'm sure the wool will turn out to be great!"

"Course it will!" Akira smirks as she ties a halter around the muzzle of a Wooloo, leading it and Avril to the stable. "But even though shearing season ain't for awhile, we do wanna trim 'em regularly, cus their wool is how they get around."

"The wool is how they… get around? Oh right, you mean how Wooloo just roll around sometimes, right?" Avril questions, ending with a giggle.

"Truth be told, I barely even see 'em use their legs. Only time they do is, well, when I'm takin' them in for a groomin' like we are now. Have to ask myself why Arceus even gave 'em legs in the first place when they never use those darned things!"

"Aw, that's a good question then!" The girl laughs. "I wonder what it's like to move around like that though. Surely I'd get all dizzy!" Poppy confirms that thought, by doing a few somersaults in the air and proving how that indeed makes her dizzy.

"These critters might just be tougher than they look." Akira muses while leading Wooloo to a platform. "And if that's true that means that despite havin' all that strength, they're as harmless as a Magikarp. I reckon that's quite respectable."

"Hm… one second," Avril stops to think. "You're saying they're harmless only because they don't want to cause harm? But they could if they wanted to?"

"Well… kinda, yeah. If there's one thing I learned from workin' with these lil' critters so much is that they don't like conflict. Well uh, we got a few that get a lil' rowdy, but still! An' when they evolve they get them big ol' horns but they don't use 'em for tusslin' - just matin'."

Well, that is interesting… Avril puts her hand on her chin. That is a somewhat familiar topic, and now that it's been brought up, the girl is interested in hearing Akira's take as well.

"Oh, that's cool and all but what if it's, uhm… c-conflict that comes to them?" She mutters, slightly afraid that might be a weird question, but curious nonetheless. She could probably learn a thing or two from those Wooloo.

Akira, holding a pair of scissors close to Wooloo's wool, pauses for a second before replying. "Often they try to roll away from any conflict that even gets near 'em, but if they can't get away, well Arceus didn't give 'em moves like Double Kick for nothin'." She then begins to lightly snip at the surface of the wool.

Avril chuckles nervously as she hears just what she expected. If life is a struggle… yeah. She repeats in her head as she sighs. "That's… admirable from them, yes! Fighting only if necessary. But it means they still need to be r-ready if needed, uh?"

"...I guess so, yeah. If they ain't ready to defend 'emselves, any strength they have amounts to a hill o' beans."

"I… I see." Avril nods seriously, seeing that theory being confirmed. Where am I even going with this… oh! "I guess I'd love to be like that too, yes!"

"If I had my druthers, that's how the world would be."

"Sorry but… your what?" The girl shakes her head. "I still don't know every word there is in Ransei…!"

"Sorry, I must sound kinda funny to city folk." Akira snickers. "That just means if I had my way everyone would be like a Wooloo. Just rollin' 'round the fields carelessly, livin' high on the Pignite, only fightin' when danger rears its ugly head… shucks, sounds like heaven!"

"I'm not even a city girl, I'm just from Kalos!" Avril giggles slightly, trying to let herself go. "But… yeah, that does sound like heaven… minus the carelessness part maybe. My uh…" She sighs. "My issue is that I have no moves, I can't really fight when conflicts get to me. There, I said it…"

"Most people ain't got no moves, nothin' to be ashamed of. That's part o' the reason why we have Pokemon as our companions, to help us with what we can't do. I can't keep watchin' our Wooloo every second of the day, so we got a Herdier to guard 'em for us. The problem with all these trainers is that they just send Pokemon out to senselessly beat the tar outta each other! People and Pokemon should be like… how Giorgia and I work together! Giorgia can talk a Snorlax outta sleepin' but she ain't got the gumption to do heavy liftin'! That's where I come in."

Avril's eyes sparkle as she listens closely to what Akira has to say. "That's a lovely way to think, yes! I can work on that… hopefully." The last word is definitely picked up by Poppy, who starts giggling noticeably from on top of Avril's head. "Even just by keeping me company and playing with me, Poppy is already doing her part, for sure."

"What I meant though is…" Let's get right to the issue at hand, if I can. "Like, uh… some people. Who don't really let you roll away from the conflicts they bring up. So I should fight back, right? But as I said… yeah." Avril groans out, feeling weirdly satisfied to say those things right to someone else's face.

"That's when ya fight back! No one said it was easy, but ya gotta grow a backbone for these things!"

"And… how, then?" Avril immediately replies. Maybe not the brightest question, but she's willing to try.

"That's a whole nother question!" Akira chuckles. "That'll be somethin' to figure out on your own."

"Oh… alright alright… oops!" The girl sighs, but it's at least reassuring to get an answer, whatever it is, from someone who seems to know what she's talking about. "That was still helpful of c-course! Thank you Akira…"

And if that's something that comes in time, Avril is probably better off focusing on the other piece of advice she's still trying to process: try new things and find what you really want to do…
one thing at a time, take it easy girl.

"Don't mention it, missie! Anythin' for my future niece in-law." Akira guffaws, slapping her knee. "Naw, I'm just pullin' yer leg."

"Please…!" A flushed Avril yelps out. "E-Even if I wanted to I'd still have to be lucky and hope she forgives me, you know…"

"Hold your Ponytas- we can take that one step at a time. But for now, we still gotta whole lot o' Wooloos to groom. Heck, I ain't even tripped this one's hooves and horns!" The Wooloo bleats as if to respond to Akira. "So let's focus on that for now, shall we?"

Avril takes a heavy breath, and a little smile appears on her face. "Alright, let's do it!"

Tuesday, September 29th - morning - Oldale town center
When there's no one around reminding her how much she could improve her skills with them, Avril is actually glad she's wearing skates. Cruising along the road is just the right amount of fun she needs, and it's also quite convenient compared to just walking, given how spread out Littledale is.

That's especially important knowing what Avril is planning to do next, and that is finally trying to meet June. Talking with Akira has made her more confident, more daring even - or at least, more inclined to just do something regardless of how bad some of the possible outcomes she's imagined actually sound in her head.

Never mind actually, what about a quick text to let June know she'll be waiting for her, maybe at the Pokémon Center? Avril picks up her Holotch, ready to type in a message to the other girl. Something like… oh wait, how to start? Simple and direct, like "let's meet please" or "where are you?", or maybe more interesting, like "I really have to let you know what happened to me!"

She should probably record an audio message - it's easier when you skate - but that's a bit too much to ask of her when Akira and Giorgia still haven't dispelled all of her anxiety. And so, the girl keeps thinking about her important message, as the houses of Oldale's center get closer and closer.

What also gets closer though is… some painful shrieking, some battle cries - the sounds of a rowdy fight, so to speak. Not really something Avril can ignore, especially not after Poppy floats in front of her field of view just to make her change direction. And so, the girl puts her Holotch away and skates towards the commotion, with a mixture of curiosity and fear for what she could be getting into.

The setting is that of a nicely kept storefront, with a few stalls full of fruits and vegetables, a sunshade on top, and a few signs that invite people to shop there. The problem is that most of these features are either toppled or ruined, with some fruit boxes laying upside down on the ground, and the signs being all displaced. The culprits?

The nearby people point at a small group of Wooloo, about four or five of them, trying to stick together and face the Boltund - so says the Pokédex, at least - erratically jumping in front of them. Some of them look rather afraid of their opponent, who's charging up electricity around its body in an intimidating fashion, while another Wooloo is desperately trying to… push another member of the herd away from trouble. But that seems to be the main source of those cries of pain!

Voices seem to blame the Sheep Pokémon for what's been happening to the shop and, needless to say, they don't have many alibis. Wild Wooloo, apparently, don't come this close to the town center normally, but they do when they try to find some easy food by raiding shops and homes. Avril can see why that would be a problem of course, and yet… the look in the eyes of those Pokémon, what Akira told her about them… it doesn't quite add up. Wooloo are not like this usually and, even then, they're supposed to run away from trouble. Especially now that Boltund seems to have the upper hand, thanks to its speed and powerful Crunch and Spark attacks.

The Boltund turns out to be the shop owner's Pokémon, and he does seem rightfully angry, so its own reluctance to hold back is… at least understandable. Or is it? The shop owner is not exactly red in the face, or acting impulsively, but rather seems calm and, well, cynical. That's the word. Surely, the attitude Avril would not want to see in him. Bystanders keep saying that he barged outside of the shop, realized what was going on, and set himself the one and only goal of teaching those Pokémon a lesson.

Avril just looks at the battle raging close to her, but doesn't act. She sure doesn't like the situation she's in though, and can already feel her body trembling with every attack. Some of the Wooloo seem to get brave and attempt a Double Kick on Boltund, but it is quite good at dodging and retaliating. Through all of this, it also makes it impossible for one of the Wooloo to push the injured one out of the way - and that is what Avril's most concerned about. Perhaps, the whole little herd is just trying to get that Wooloo to safety, but… right, that Wooloo is paralyzed. It can't even roll that fast like the ones Avril saw at Akira's farm, and in fact it can't even get up on its legs. If that's "teaching a lesson", then the shop owner is going too far. Definitely. So much of this is leaving a bad taste in her mouth.

Wobbly on her wheels, Avril slowly skates towards the side where the shop owner is - although it feels more like a crawl. In the meantime, Poppy is giving her gentle nudges on her head, to let her trainer know that she has her support. When the girl is close enough, she gives it a try.

    "Excuse me, sir…"

Nah, that would never work. The man is calling out another attack, and Boltund crunches the paralyzed Wooloo again.

    "Stop, please, stop!!"

The man turns after what seems like an eternity. "Why would I, I got just what I needed! And who are you anyways?" He sneers.

"T-that Wooloo is very hurt already… and I'm… well..." Avril replies, some of her confidence already fading away.

"Well, Flower Girl, that's the point! I ain't letting any of them escape." He clenches his fist. "If I let them, they'll come back and raid us again. If I lock them up, it's actual community service. I can pass them off to some farmer, too, and…"

"N-no! You're just taking out your rage on that poor…"

"I know what I'm doing, but you sound like a Mauville doll who's never seen the world! Now let me finish… Roar them back and use Spark!"

It obviously didn't go as well as Avril hoped - not to mention, the man was at least somewhat right. Locking them up was safer… maybe catching them… chills go down the girl's spine. Yes, spine, because in these moments you have to show whether you have one or not.

The Kalosian happens to have a spare Pokéball in her cloth bag - probably a leftover of her Petalburg shopping, but it's convenient that it's still at reach now. She also happens to have less distractions in front of her, as the other Wooloo have backed up because of Roar and have left the hurt one laying on the ground by itself, all while Boltund is approaching. Oh, and she has encouragement in the form of a magical hairpin that's actually a Pokémon. In fact, Poppy seems to be absolutely ecstatic at the thought of, well… what's about to happen.

    "At least I'm a trainer!"

The Pokéball that Avril throws lands somewhere on the Wooloo right before Boltund closes the gap. The Dog Pokémon is forced to continue running, and looks very confused as to where its target went: in those seconds of relative calm, the Pokéball containing the already hurt Wooloo seals tight, and with a flicker, announces the successful capture. Avril only has to skate up to it, grab it, and roll away… just like the other Wooloo of the herd.

She's not sure whether or not that was the right thing to do. Surely the shopkeeper is disappointed that the rest of the herd is gone, but if it's true that raids are not that rare of an occasion, he could do more to protect his provisions. The herd will also be worried for their member, that they fought so hard to protect only for it to get snatched up by a random girl on skates. The bystanders, well… their reaction seemed to be mixed, in this case, with some defending the shop owner and some being happy that a trainer got to take care of the hurt Wooloo.

But the most important actor in this play is the Wooloo that's been caught, for sure. Avril now has to be responsible for healing it and ensuring a quick recovery… which is why she's increasing her pace as she makes a beeline for the Pokémon Center.

And for the record, that text message for June is still sitting there, waiting to be sent.

    🐑🐑🐑

"Hm… sounds like that was a herd of Wooloo who ran away from a farm, yes. They're usually the ones that raid shops and such for food, and it's a good thing you stepped in." The nurse speaks, as the Wooloo Avril caught is sitting right on top of the counter, one of its legs wrapped in several layers of gauze. It nods at that remark, while the girl tries to just put the pieces together.

"You want me to keep it then? Is the rest of the herd going to be ok?" The blonde girl questions, her eyes bouncing between her new catch and the nurse.

"For us citizens, it's a good thing, it's one less Wooloo turned wild. For her, it's also good, because she's clearly had enough of the farm lifestyle, and coming with you is a surefire way to avoid getting shoved into a farm again. For you… I guess you two already know each other a bit, which is a good thing for any trainer who's got a new Pokémon." The nurse smiles reassuringly. "And for the herd? They'll make do, honestly. Just focus on her, it's already more than enough."

All of that makes perfect sense.

Avril was already busy trying to get used to her team of (now) three Pokémon, and getting to gain back the trust of Angie and Wisteria. Mostly Angie actually. Another Pokémon to look after was something that she was still on the fence about, even after Brendan's tips. But the nurse… she was so right.

"Well, Wooloo… you heard the nurse too, right?" The girl now looks right at her new Pokémon. It's the last step she needs to reassure herself this will be fine. "Are you willing to come with me then?"

Avril has to take a step back, because Wooloo is literally jumping towards her as if she was hugging the girl. All the wool gets into her face and she can barely speak, but that's just a strong way to say yes. "Hah, it's decided!" The nurse chimes in, congratulating Avril for that… catch. "No need to worry, you handled it well enough. People will understand, I'm sure."

"Right, thanks." The girl chuckles nervously, because of course she had to bring that up. But it was a short lived feeling. Avril's mind quickly realized that there's no going back, and with it, no real reason to think it over. The Pokémon Center's lunch will be a great way to wind down.

This report may not be that useful, considering it's about Wooloo, a very common Pokémon around here, but I've decided to write something anyway. It's the first report I write all by myself, and it should be useful to know if I'm doing a good job!

I've seen about two or three herds of Wooloo around Littledale on Tuesday morning alone, and I can say the herds themselves don't mix that often. They don't really fight for territory, and often mind their own business or move somewhere else entirely: after all, Wooloo and Dubwool strike me as rather peaceful and kind-hearted Pokémon on their own. The only situation where they proved to be more fiery was when they were protecting an injured member of their own group, which is definitely… understandable.

Their devotion to their group seems to also come in something I saw some Wooloo do: they would often roll into other Wooloo, pushing them forward and back into their herd. To me, this looks like a desire not to leave anyone behind, not even the slowest Pokémon. This also makes sense given that, with all that wool… some of these Wooloo really struggle to walk! They prefer to roll, using the wool as cushion and occasionally getting help from other members of the herd. I don't really see any other way out for them, other than evolving into Dubwool and developing stronger, longer legs…

Finally, speaking of wool, something I have noticed while grooming some Wooloo during one of my odd jobs is how there's different colors and textures to their hair. In particular, some have a whiter, softer wool that feels just perfect for a jumper, while others have slightly greyer hair that feels a bit shaggy to the touch and that also makes the Wooloo look more unkempt, if that's even a thing. It definitely feels sturdier, but also less comfortable, and I'd rather see it used in stuffed clothing or even on the inside of some plushies! I still have no idea what causes this to happen, but it may be interesting to look into, at least.

    Saturday, September 26th @ 1100 - Route 102

Clint had been on the road out of Petalburg for a couple hours now, departing early in the morning. Clint had made a couple of stops on the way out, picking up a few supplies for his trip. Enough food for a couple days, pokeballs things like that. The big purchase was a new tent, something he needed after the last camping trip he took with a few friends back home resulted in his old tent being rendered unusable. Nothing needed to be mentioned about the amount of Dickinson family homemade booze his friend from back home, Clyde Dickinson brought with him was drank that weekend. That vile hooch tasted like paint thinner but on the bright side it would have you walking like a Spinda in no time at all.

Bringing his attention back to the present day, he felt it was nice to be out in nature again, Clint had grown tired of all the civilization he had been forced to encounter so far, with only brief opportunities to escape it so far. But now he had at least a couple of days out on the open road, nothing but himself and his team of Pokemon.

He had planned at some point to let them out to travel on foot with him, but he wanted to make some ground first. Maybe later, once Clint set up camp for the night.

The path ahead of Clint was a fairly easy one, Route 102 was a relatively calm countryside, rolling hills with small clumps of trees along the way. You could hear the sounds of birds chirping and streams flowing. Clint could always enjoy places like this, get away from the rapidly expanding metropolis determined to devour beautiful places like the one he found himself in. Being that it was Saturday, Clint noticed a fair amount of campsites set up along the way, hopefully he would be able to find an unclaimed area before nightfall.

Clint's path took him down into a sizable grove, the once shining sun blotted out by the large deciduous trees stretching their branches over Clint. The sounds Clint was hearing earlier were also muffled, replaced by the wind brushing up against the leaves. He kept an eye on his surroundings, never knew what could pop out of the trees. Clint decided now was the time to let out one of his Pokemon to walk alongside him, better to plan ahead then be fumbling for a Pokeball after a wild encounter. So out came Charmeleon, who seemed excited to be out and about with his trainer. Clint had to instruct Charmeleon to stay away from the bushes on either side of the path they were on, last thing Clint needed was Charmeleon accidentally starting a forest fire.

The duo had been walking for a while uninterrupted through the grove, but that all changed with a Seedot dropping down from above, just barely missing Clint on the way down. Both Clint and Charmeleon were surprised by this, taking a couple seconds to re-focus. Seedot used this moment of surprise to hit Charmeleon with a Tackle, the two Pokemon colliding and falling towards the side of the road.

"Let's see if our new friend likes an Ember," Charmeleon immediately shot an Ember at the Seedot, pushing the Seedot back. It started to run back towards a large tree, presumably the one it was hanging above Clint before dropping down. Clint instructed Charmeleon to hold position, no need to go on the offensive if it wasn't necessary. The Seedot continued back into the bush, so Clint felt it wasn't needed to pursue the issue further. With the Seedot out of sight, the duo kept pushing on through the grove.

Clint could hear branches cracking as he kept walking, but chose to ignore it. Forests were often full of noises, couldn't be bothered by that. Besides, he had to be coming to the end of this patch of woodland soon anyways, seems like he had been walking in there for at least a couple hours now. But that would have to wait, looks like Clint had another problem on his hands.

It appeared that same Seedot from earlier had returned with more accomplices. A few more Seedot were also up in the trees, along with a Nuzleaf for added measure. This wasn't the news Clint was hoping for. Clint wasn't going to be able to fight his way out of this one, he was going to have to flee. Easier said than done. He could see the edge of the forest from here, but the Nuzleaf and its crew of Seedots were in between Clint and the wide open. Clint looked around for a quick second, figuring out a plan. The Seedot were standing still, seems as if they were still figuring Clint out just as Clint was figuring them out.

Clint decided to make the first move, having Charmeleon deploy a smokescreen while running below the Seedot and Nuzleaf in the trees above them. The duo were hightailing it towards the clearing, but Clint looked back and saw the Nuzleaf chasing them down through the smoke.

The Nuzleaf used the move Razor Leaf, shooting a flurry of sharp leaves towards Clint and Charmeleon. Charmeleon seemed unbothered by the attack, but Clint was tripped up by the leaves, falling down onto the dirt road. The Nuzleaf, with the Seedots following behind. Clint started to pick himself up, and notice Charmeleon had turned around to come help out his trainer. Clint appreciated the valiant effort, but Charmeleon was still outnumbered. Clint reached and grabbed his other two Pokeballs, and let out the Pokemon in them.

The Pokemon were stuck in a stand-off as Clint picked himself back up. Charmeleon, Grovyle and Poliwag on one side and Nuzleaf, with a entourage of Seedot backup on the other. Clint and his team's backs were now towards the exit of the woods, which had Clint thinking retreat. He wasn't going to be able to beat an entire group, but he could engineer a quick escape. The focus had to be on the Nuzleaf ringleader.

"Poliwag, use Hypnosis on the big one, Charmeleon let's get a Smokescreen going," Clint set up his plan.

Poliwag shot a ring of energy at the Nuzleaf, causing the Nuzleaf to become very drowsy, putting its hands on its knees, before slowly falling over. While this was happening, Charmeleon was deploying another Smokescreen, giving Clint and his travelling party a chance to break for the wide-open area. The Seedot pursued a short distance, but eventually circled back towards the Nuzleaf who was snoring away.

Clint made it out of the grove, with his team of Pokemon in tow. After looking back to make sure he wasn't followed, Clint sat down on the ground, breathing heavily. His Pokemon surrounded him, checking in on their trainer. Clint himself did a damage assessment, he saw both of his forearms were scraped up, one of the knees on his jeans wore a hole into it but he felt alright. Poliwag shot a quick jet of water at Clint, which felt refreshing. Clint showed his appreciation by patting the tadpole Pokemon on the head. With this team of his, Clint thought, things just might work out. He was going to catch a quick breather here, then keep on moving.

  • Junko "June" Enomoto
    Tuesday, September 29th
    Noon
    Oldale-Littleroot Township
Littledale's gym doesn't look much like a gym- not by June's standards anyways, and a far cry from the traditional style Brawly and Norman went for with their gyms. If it weren't for her GPS directing her here she would have completely glossed over it as it blends in with the surrounding farms. Sure, the emblem seen on most gym exteriors is on this building as well, but it does little to make it stick out, and June idly stares at the gym before deciding to walk over.

"Howdy. Looks like we got a challenger here?" A stranger's voice takes June out of her state and she looks around to see where it came from. She glances down and sees a short and stout young adult whose gender she can't quite figure out, and the straw hat obscuring their eyes doesn't help much with that. "I'm Leader Merry Richtide, an' my pronouns are they n' them."

June looks at Merry in disbelief as they extend their arm out, confused why the gym leader is just wandering around the gym. "Oh, um, my name is Junko Enomoto. But everyone calls me June. Nice to meet you." She bows, unintentionally ignoring Merry's handshake offer. "If it's important information, I have two badges, the Knuckle Badge and the Balance Badge."

"Thems are two very different badges." Merry chuckles. "Now what are we waiting' for? Let's mosey on over!" June nods and follows them, but is confused when Merry walks right past the gym.

"Um, excuse me- isn't the gym over there?"

Merry shakes their head. "We don't do battles there, dirties up the place. Besides, I like havin' Pokemon battle out in the fields to give 'em freedom."

Then what's the point of even having a building in the first place…

Behind the gym is a wide open field where Miltank graze alongside some Wooloo, all of which are being tended to by a group of kids and a few adults- June figures they must be on some sort of field-trip. One of the adults from the group, a man with dark brown skin and a poofy mustache looks up and walks towards the two.

"Is this another challenger?" He asks. Merry nods, and June formally greets the man whose name she finds out is Yosuke. After introductions are made, Yosuke jogs over to the group he was with, and Merry takes this time as an opportunity to explain the rules to June.
"Y'see June, what we do here is a smidge different from what you've done at your other gym battles. Y'ever hear of knockout battles?"

June pokes her lip and shakes her head. "They ain't very different from regular battles, the difference is that battles are segmented into rounds. The winner of that round has to go back to their ball and can't be sent out for the rest of the battle. What we're doin' is that we both use four Pokemon, and if you can beat three of 'em, y'get the Dell Badge. Sound good?" June nods, and the two create enough space for a battlefield. As this happens, the group of children all rush toward Yosuke, screeching and jumping with excitement. This wasn't exactly what June had in mind when she pictured having an audience, but support of any kind is always pleasant.

"The battle between Leader Merry Richtide and Junko Enomoto is about to begin! The challenger may send out a Pokemon!"

Not really having any idea what Pokemon Merry uses, June just sends out Chip to scout their team, and it takes no time for Merry to send out their Pokemon: a Yamper. It's a Pokemon June actually recognizes for once, although she's always seen them specifically as pets up until now. The only other thing she knows about Yamper is they're electric-types, making this a bad matchup for June. Switching out isn't an option however, so she needs to make do.

"Chip, use Aqua Jet!" Chip bullets straight towards Yamper, who bears his crackling fangs, but this was expected. June calls for Chip to change trajectory, and he skids against the grass to appear from behind Yamper before knocking him back a few feet and scurries after just to get a Sand Attack into his eyes. When Yamper stands up again, he howls to boost his confidence, but getting hit with a Struggle Bug stops him before he can finish. Trying to escape any chance of getting with a Thunder Fang, Chip engulfs himself in water to run away, but Yamper is able to use his sense of smell to follow suit, even with dirt in his eyes and ends up playing a game of tag with his foe. The two run around the field for a bit until June has to order Chip to repeat the strategy used at the beginning of the round. With the assistance of Aqua Jet, Chip circles around Yamper before closing in to strike. The same trick doesn't work twice though, and Yamper turns around at just the right time to catch Chip with his electrified jaw. Chip is still able to battle, but does a 180 and cowardishly runs back to his Pokeball.

"Wimpod is unable to battle!" Yosuke shouts, trying to be heard over his screaming students. "This round goes to Leader Merry!"

"Wait! B-but Chip can still battle!"

Merry shakes their head. "Sorry miss, thems the rules. Yer Wimpod didn't wanna do no more fightin', so perhaps it's for the best anyways." They then return Yamper to his Pokeball and wait for June to send out her next.

"Sting, it's your turn!" Merry spends about two seconds looking at the Beautifly's movements before they send out a Herdier. Upon seeing this, Sting hastily spits a Poison Sting straight towards the Loyal Dog Pokemon who sidesteps the attack. Trying to catch it off-guard, Sting then launches an Electroweb in quick succession only to be blocked off by a Protect barrier Herdier puts up. This doesn't discourage Sting in the slightest- he rapidly flaps his wings to gust forward a Silver Wing in an attempt to put pressure on the barrier, and is proven to have some success when the Herdier looks irritated by the continuous attack. Feeling energized, Sting unrolls his proboscis and charges forward with a Bug Bite. Things only seem to be looking better when the barrier vanishes before the attack lands- but so does Herdier, and in his place is a hole in the ground. June's eyes widen before they're averted to her PokeGear.

"According to the Pokedex, this is Dig… the user burrows and attacks the user-"

She's cut off by the sound of Herdier (who must have popped out of the ground behind Sting while June was inattentive) pouncing on Sting and biting in his wings with an Ice Fang. Sting nearly comes crashing down but fortunately he's able to muster up the energy to use a Silver Wing, which not only releases him from Herdier's jaw, but also sheds dead wing particles. The speed granted from this allows Sting to trap Herdier in an Electroweb right as it thuds to the ground, and with his target stationary, he jolts forward with his proboscis pointed forward for a finishing Bug Bite- June instinctively shields her eyes before the attack connects.

"Herdier is unable to battle! This round goes to Junko!"

June lowers her hands to return Sting while the crowd of children cheer- although she's able to discern an adult voice that wasn't heard a minute ago.

    "Fantastico!! Keep it up Junko!!"

She turns her head to see what the source of the roaring was, and sure enough, Giorgia stands adjacent to the crowd of observing schoolchildren, cheering so loud that it actually draws everyone's attention to her. Akira is with her as well, arms crossed while her face is stone cold.

"Gi-Giorgia!? Aunt Akira, when- how did- why are you-" She looks to the referee to signal a time out and dashes to her aunts.

"Hello Junko- we've just arrived here, we're so sorry for being late."

"I ain't." Akira remarks before receiving a forceful elbow to the gut, causing Akira to give an annoyed groan. "Alright, fine. The reason I'm here is because Giorgia reckoned that if I was willin' to cheer for Junichi and even that varmint Tetsuo, I should do the same for ya. Even if I detest it, she has a point…"

June's face slowly forms into a grin. "Thank you Aunt Akira. I really appreciate you showing up for me." Even though her aunt is the only one not cheering her on, her presence does more for her than anyone else could.

"That's sweet an' all, but are we gonna keep battlin' or what? We got an audience of rowdy youngins rarin' to see some action!"

"Right… of course." Not thinking much of it, June sends Einstein out to battle. There's a brief pause from Merry before they send out their next Pokemon, and it's one June is well aware of: a Tauros. She's seen what kind of destruction her dad's Tauros is capable of, so she's feeling somewhat discouraged by this.

    Spoiler:

    "Tauros, Iron Head!"

Of course, she can't afford to waste time worrying about this. She readjusts her glasses, and has Einstein use Reflect to bounce Tauros back, following up with a Confusion to exacerbate the impact. Things are looking good until Tauros scrapes his hoof against the dirt while snorting with eyes that briefly flash red. The Pokedex's description of what just happened throws June off a bit.

It seems this move is Spite, which restricts the last move an opponent uses! This isn't good, as Einstein only knows two damaging attacks, and the other of which is significantly weaker than Confusion… Tauros charging forward with another Iron Head serves as a motivator to order Einstein to zip out of the way while shooting Struggle Bug at him to deal chip damage.

After Einstein dodges, Tauros just stubbornly changes his trajectory to charge headfirst into the Orbeetle, but he's met with the same outcome as before. When he misses a second time, he repeats his previous action, and at this point it becomes second nature for Einstein to dodge and shoot. This pattern continues for a bit until Tauros decides to stop in his tracks and furiously moo, harshly stomping his hooves into the ground, causing it to shake. June wobbles about, but Einstein is completely fine as he never really touches the ground- or so she thought. As Tauros continues to bulldoze the ground, his power output increases, and chunks of dirt are hurled upwards toward Einstein. They don't actually do much damage, but some of it manages to get into his eyes, functioning as a powered up Sand Attack.

Tauros takes this as a sign to charge forward and surround his body in electricity, ramming into Einstein with all his might. Reflect weakens the attack, although Tauros' insane strength is just barely weakened by the barrier, and the momentum of the attack still makes contact with Einstein's body, blowing him back by a good distance before Einstein is able to do that himself with Confusion. His barrier isn't looking too great either, as Wild Charge put a serious dent in it. There is good news for June in that Wild Charge can damage the user as well as the target, and the exhaustion from Tauros only seems to prove that right. Despite that though, more electricity crackles along his fur and he rushes forward as if nothing happened.

Einstein scans his surroundings and notices the debris from Bulldoze used earlier. With time running out before he's hit with another force of electricity, he uses Confusion to fling the dirt chunks forward, and just like what happened to Einstein, some of the dirt gets into Tauros' eyes, causing him to loudly writhe in pain. Taking advantage of this, Einstein uses Confusion again, this time using the psychic energy to put an immense weight on Tauros and making him unable to move forward. This seems to be enough to end this round, but when Tauros, staring Einstein down with glowing red eyes, unleashes a burning ear-shattering roar while using his three tails to furiously whip himself… well, that's enough for her to realize she'll have to put up with this final bout of resistance.

"Consarnit!" Merry groans, tipping their hat. "That there is Anger Point. Whenever it activates, Tauros becomes as stubborn as a… well, a Tauros. See for yerself." They point towards their Pokemon, who fights against the current and moves forward with all his might. "'Fraid I ain't got no more control over 'em when he's like this."

Einstein exerts more energy to keep Tauros in place, and it becomes a struggle battle, literally brains versus brawn. Both Pokemon need to be careful- Tauros has already taken considerable damage for his ability to activate, and the psychic energy holding him back is hurting him considerably. Likewise, it takes an immense amount of psychic energy for Einstein to hold Tauros back, so much so that it becomes physically exhausting. Being an urgent situation though, they both push their limits, Tauros moving ever so slightly faster while Einstein becomes increasingly drained from using his dwindling power. So drained, in fact, that he quickly runs out of Confusions, and Tauros, now freed, starts bustling forward, electricity crackling through his fur- until about halfway through he suddenly collapses to his side.

There's a sudden silence from everyone. June blinks in disbelief, and even rubs her glasses to make sure what she's seeing just happened.

"...it seems that Confusion had depleted enough of Tauros' energy that simply activating Wild Charge was enough to knock him over." Yosuke declares, putting an index finger and thumb to his chin. "Which means Tauros is unable to battle! This round goes to Junko!"

The combined cheers of the children and Giorgia raises June's spirits. Einstein hovers over to June, occasionally faltering, and his trainer pets his shell. "You did a marvelous job, Einstein! You deserve a good rest after your hard work- return for now."

"Now don't get too big for yer britches just yet, June." Merry says, readjusting their hat. "We still got one more round to go, and this'll be the decidin' match!

"Right." June nods. She has two Pokemon to choose from, Kit and Heracross, and she's inclined to go with the latter. While she's clueless what else Merry has in store, two of their Pokemon are normal-types, and it'd be reasonable to assume that's what Merry will send out next, and June would have the upper hand. That, and also the fact that Kit is… well, she's been hesitant to use Kit after what happened at that contest last week.

    "Heracross, lend me your assistance!"

Right when the Single Horn Pokemon materializes, he lets out a battle-cry and hops up and down, raring to go. Seeing his hasty nature, Merry smirks. "Hoo boy, have I got just the Pokemon for this Heracross to face. C'mon out Miltank!"

While Merry's Miltank isn't as large as Big Blue, her presence is certainly comparable, which excites Heracross. His familiarity with the species gets him a little cocky. As soon as the referee gives the cue, Miltank charges forward with a Rollout, and Heracross firmly plants his feet into the ground, just like he did with Big Blue. Unlike Big Blue however, this Miltank doesn't aim straight for her target, and actually goes off-course a little, rolling towards a chunk of the ground that had been there from Tauros' Bulldoze, and uses it as a ramp to gain air. She falls in a dowards arc towards Heracross and breaks her previous position, striking Heracross from above with a harsh Stomp. Heracross quickly counters with a Horn Attack, but it's overpowered by Miltank's hoof, and he's knocked onto his back. Miltank uses this as an opportunity to use Rollout again, maneuvering around Heracross in circles to gain momentum while he struggles to get back up on his feet. Right when he's about to however, Miltank plows over him. He takes a moment to get up again, but just like before, he's hit by Rollout. Thinking third time's a charm, he tries yet again but is rammed into again by Miltank, inflicting far more damage than the previous two executions of the attack.

June starts to grow anxious. This Miltank is on an entirely different level from Big Blue. Seeing this become a pattern is certainly discouraging… but she can't give into her worries! Not while Akira is watching! She needs to get in-sync with her Pokemon, especially when Miltank is about to hit a fourth time. Heracross is very energetic, doesn't hesitate to make a move, and impulsive, so she'll have to adopt a similar mindset for the moment. She takes a deep breathe to recollect herself, and she feels an impulse telling her to call out for an attack at the moment. It'd be a huge risk, but…

    "Heracross, do it!"

At the call of his trainer, Heracross jabs a fist into Miltank with every ounce of his strength, halting Miltank in her place. June looks to the Pokedex to see what this is and sees he's learned a new move: Counter, a fighting-type move that hits the target with twice the power that the last physical move that struck the user.

"Shoot! Miltank, get outta there!" Miltank uses Rollout to create distance between the two Pokemon and stops at a close hill where she can safely drink milk from her own udders. June tries not to think about the demonstration Akira gave her yesterday, and calls out for Aerial Ace. Heracross uses this attack to not only quickly catch up to Miltank, but also to strike before she can fully heal herself. Miltank headbutts Heracross in the face and makes him flinch, and Miltank holds a finger in the air to move it left and right, left and right…

What happens next absolutely puzzles June: Miltank exhales and a cold gust is blown towards Heracross, forming chunks of ice around his legs and making it difficult to move. Not that it really matters when they're both within a close proximity of each other, as seen when Heracross knocks her back with three strikes of Arm Thrust. She skids against the ground, but deliberately falls to her back and uses Rollout to create more distance, standing atop the hill before wagging her finger once more. June learns this move is Metronome, a technique that somehow becomes any move… but this Metronome just turns out to be an Aqua Ring.

While there certainly could have been much worse outcomes, she can't allow Miltank to heal up anymore. Heracross hastily shatters the ice chunks with his fists and uses Night Slash to zip uphill while Miltank uses Metronome again. This time it comes out as Retaliate, and Miltank is quickly fueled with an immense rage for her fainted comrades before rushing downhill and ramming her head to intercept Night Slash. Heracross recoils and sternly plants his feet into the ground to prevent himself from tumbling down, but is dangerously close to that. One more attack should be enough to make him go rolling downhill and put him at a massive disadvantage, and Miltank wags her finger in hopes of getting lucky. She ends up using Rock Slide, sending a barrage of boulders rolling his way, but Heracross manages to shatter them all with Arm Thrust. When those are no longer a problem, he notices one final rock heading towards him that's significantly faster than the others- no wait, that's Miltank using Rollout!

    "Heracross, Counter!"

Heracross holds his fit back as if to charge up the attack, and swings it straight into Miltank. The brunt of his fist is enough to completely halt Miltank and knock her straight into the ground where she's nearly buried. Even though the round has yet to be called, Heracross sets a foot on her belly and flexes his expanding muscles, his way of celebrating.

"Hold on, hold on!" Yosuke shouts as he makes his way over to both Pokemon to get a better look. He briefly examines Miltank before twirling his mustache and calling the round.

"Miltank is unable to battle! The winner is Junko Enomoto!"

"Heracross!!" June cheers as she dashes to her Pokemon, roping her arms around him. "You did such a good job!"

"Well, guess I shoulda seen this comin'." Merry says as they catch up. "Ya showed a lot o' promise durin' this here battle, an' for that I'll have to give ya yer badge and money, but I'll be throwin' in a TM as well! This thing right here is Bulldoze, that move Tauros used to shake th' ground. It'd suit a tough Pokemon like that there Heracross and slows enemies down, which he can use t' get ahead." June gladly accepts her award and bows at Merry. She turns her head when hearing the footsteps of her aunts approaching.

"Molto bene! I'm so proud of you Junko!" Giorgia cheers. As she and her wife get closer, Akira's expression slowly grows more and more irritated. "You did well yourself, Merry!"

"Thank you kindly, Giorgia. I see you brought along… Akira Enomoto!?" Merry says with a mixture of surprise and pleasure. "Why, I don't believe it! Never thought I'd see ya 'round these parts! Giorgia tells me a lot about ya, but I ain't never see ya! How's you these days?"

"Buzz off, Merry!" Akira barks, much to June's shock. It takes a lot to get this sort of reaction from Akira, and how she'd snap at Merry of all people is baffling.

"Same as always, I see." Merry chuckles.

"Aunt Akira, um, so…" June takes a deep breath. "I was wondering what you had thought of my battle? I know you believe Pokemon battles to be little more than senseless violence, but I was hoping that by showing how determined I was that I could have you see my viewpoint-"

"And y'did that by havin' yer big ol' bug smack the heck outta that Miltank?" Akira interrupts.

    "Um, n-no, not like that-"

"Y'ain't gonna change my mind, Junko. I already told you." Her stern face starts to become more and more intimidating as she stares down at June. "I stand by my values."

    "...b-but…"

"An'd those big ol' puppy dog eyes ain't work either! Now c'mon Giorgia, there's more work to be done at the farm." She says before walking off into the distance.

"Oh, I'm so sorry! Don't worry Junko- I'll talk some sense into her when we get home." Giorgia reassures before catching up with her wife.

"Shoot, 'fraid I can't help ya with family problems." Merry readjusts their hat. "I'm a gym leader, not one of 'em therapists."

June gives no response, just standing in defeat as she watches her aunts' departure, despite her victory just a minute ago. Maybe this is just one of those battles she just can't win.

Heracross forgot Tackle and learned Counter!

    Bad Wool
Tuesday, September 29th - early afternoon - Littledale Pokémon Center
    Let's be real.

Being a trainer is still a bit too much for me, even if that's exactly what I told that weirdo with the Boltund, or what's printed out on my license. In a moment like this, when I should take things slowly, what I did doesn't really work in my favor.

I don't really like the word "trainer" also because… to me, it implies you're spending time with Pokémon only for your sake. You teach them things and you bond with them only to further your own goals, be it getting wool and milk, earn some money to live with, or compete against other humans. That's just the impression I have, but what makes trainers different from employers at this point?

Being a Pokémon friend is more like me though! Surely what I did before with Wooloo qualifies me as one, too. And the reports too… writing them is actually more enjoyable than I thought!

    Speaking of Wooloo though…

I decide to head out for a bit after lunch. I've had a quick nap too, I'll admit, but now is about time I check on my new capture again. Behind the Pokémon Center, a few benches in the shade, close to some battlefields, are the perfect place for me to stay.

The Sheep Pokémon materializes onto my lap, all of her bandage still there on one of her legs - that's where Boltund really Crunched her the hardest. Her wool is still all rough and dirty, but it's ok, I can try to groom her later during the day. For now she's getting a few head pats.

According to my own Wooloo report, she has the shaggy kind of wool. A bit on the greyish side, somewhat uneven and unkempt. The other kind of wool is probably more cute and more desirable but I'm happy regardless given the circumstances I caught her in. What I'm more keen on is the fact that yes, Wooloo still seems to enjoy my presence, and is baaing happily as I pat her. Poppy doesn't quite intervene, and just looks at us from above, seemingly interested to see how this pans out.

I eventually try to put Wooloo on the ground and see if she's able to walk but… actually, the answer is no. She doesn't want to budge, her legs folded down beneath all that heavy wool. Even worse probably - she is visibly struggling to roll around, or at least giving herself the first push with her legs. She shakes her head too, as if she's certain it's not going to work. Understandable, I'd say - she's still hurt from that "battle", but seeing her in this state is still painful to me.

About at this point, though, the insistent chirping of a flying-type Pokémon forces me to raise my head. Turns out it's not one, but two Pidove, each carrying a little gift for me to take! Definitely the ones Brendan mentioned in his (pretty sweet) response e-mails.

    Hey Avril and Natsuko!
Thanks for the attached photo! It's great that you were able to observe such a cute scene! It's often difficult for researchers to see Pokémon in such a relaxed state. It probably helps that those living in town are fairly used to people. Your theory that Azurill's evolution can be triggered by happiness in itself and confidence in the water is an intriguing one, and definitely worth exploring. Evolutions categorized as "happiness" are a strange phenomenon indeed, and many researchers are involved in pinning down the various ways such a thing is achieved, especially in the wild. Professor Rowan of Sinnoh has published many a paper on the matter, if you would be interested in further reading! Either way, keep an eye out for a Pidove! I'll send it to find Avril, since she officially submitted the report, but it will be carrying a Sea Incense for each of you.
    Cheers, Brendan Birch

    Hey Avril!
All information is helpful- don't worry about what I may or may not need. Just focus on your observations! Wooloo are indeed herd creatures that prefer not to leave their friends behind. You're on the nose that their wool makes them struggle sometimes- this is why they are an exclusively domestic animal. Humans have selectively bred them for many years for the thickest, most luxurious wool and as a consequence these Pokémon need regular full-body shearing to keep comfortable and mobile. Keep an eye out for a Pidove! I think you might enjoy this- a felted beret made here in town of 100% Wooloo wool and hand-dyed dusty pink. May hid it from me months ago and I just found it, but it goes so well with your report that I'll send it to you instead of wearing it tomorrow.
    Cheers, Brendan Birch

Case in point, the packages do contain just that: two Sea Incense, one of which is for Tsu, and… one of Brendan's hats, apparently. Just like he said… yes, I happen to enjoy that hat. My Holotch's camera confirms that it looks pretty good on me, and it also acts as a good place for Poppy to hide under if the weather gets cold. It's… actually Wooloo that doesn't seem to like it much, for some reason.

At first, this feels weird to me, because all the Wooloo from Akira's farm seem fine with being groomed and sheared, and I'm not sure why my own would feel any different. But then I notice that… the wool that the hat is made of is just different from my own Pokémon's coat. And the sad look that Wooloo is giving me right now only fuels more unsettling thoughts. She's definitely getting more head pats for this…

    Avril, 29/9, 2:56 p.m.
Hello Tsu! Just letting you know that I got the two Sea Incenses! I'm around the PokéCenter for now, but I can leave it at the help desk for later if you want. Gotta leave at 4:30 p.m.!

    Saturday, September 26th @ 1800 - Route 102

Clint had found himself a good camping spot, set up right next to a small stream. It had a big oak tree overhanging, so that gave the site some cover as well. Clint wasn't set up in an "official camp site" so to speak, which suited him just fine. They always had fees and other nonsense at those kind of sites. Better in Clint's mind to just set up the tent wherever he could find nice level ground. So he managed to get the tent raised in short order, they were easy enough as long as nothing got in your way. Speaking of that, Clint might as well let his distractions out of their Pokeballs, let them experience the outdoors some more, in a more easy going scenario than earlier today.

Poliwag immediately went for the creek, while Grovyle scaled the tree behind the campsite and stretched out on a branch up there. Charmeleon, ever the blindly loyal suck-up, stood right beside his trainer.

"Well you want to collect some firewood with me," Clint asked, looking down at his Pokemon.

Charmeleon didn't really understand the question, but followed Clint as he walked, hatchet in hand towards a group of small trees. He started to inspect the trees, looking for one dried out and dead enough to use to start a fire. Wet wood was no good, impossible to get to burn. After checking a few trees, he finally found one suitable for use. He began swinging at the tree just above the stump with his hatchet, but it was slow cutting. Little hatchet like the one Clint had wasn't much good for cutting down anything bigger than a sapling. An idea spawned into Clint's head, one certainly worth giving a go.

"Charmeleon, you can learn slash can't you."

That caught Charmeleon's attention, who was now looking up at his trainer. Clint pulled out his PokeNav, to load up the information for teaching the move. Reception was slow out here, which resulted in the information taking some time to load. Clint shook the PokeNav in an attempt to make it load faster, which obviously had no effect.

Clint knelt down next to Charmeleon, and mimed the move slash, Clint swiping his arm forward in a hook motion. Charmeleon did the same, swinging his arm. Charmeleon didn't put his full body into the move, which made it look weaker than it should be. Clint stood back up, and emphasized putting his body into the move as he demonstrated it to Charmeleon a second time. This time, Charmeleon transferred the strength from the rest of his body into his Slash attack, but due to that his balance was out of sync. Charmeleon teetered as he attacked, but ultimately didn't fall over. Clint instructed Charmeleon to try again, but this time brace his core to steady his balance. This time, Charmeleon pulled off the move much better, a lot of power behind the swing but stayed upright.

Clint then wanted to test Charmeleon's strength on the tree he was working on chopping down. Charmeleon walked over to the tree, and gave it a Slash at the spot where Clint had been chopping. Charmeleon's claw went through, and the tree fell to the wayside. He was going to have to practice a little more before Clint relied on the move, but the move held some real promise. He recalled that Slash had a high chance of dealing critical hits, which could tilt the landscape in a battle. Clint patted Charmeleon, who was standing proud over the tree he slashed down, on the head. Clint then picked up the base end of the tree and began dragging it back to camp.

Clint arrived back at camp dragging that tree with him. He would have to buck it up quickly and get a fire going soon, the sun was on its way down. Clint started by stripping the tree of its branches, and throwing them into a pile. Clint then got to work cutting the tree into smaller chunks. He figured he'd do this solo, give his Pokemon some time to rest.

It took a whole lot of swinging, but Clint had turned that tree into pieces, and set up a rough pit for his fire. He set up the wood in a teepee formation, with some small branches and leaves stuffed under it. He then called Charmeleon over, who was curled up resting at the base of the tree. Charmeleon came over, and Clint motioned for Charmeleon to turn around. Charmeleon did, and Clint grabbed Charmeleon's tail and slowly guided it towards where his wooden teepee had been built, and held the tail in there until the whole thing caught fire. Charmeleon pulled his tail away from the fire, and laid down and curled up against the fire. Grovyle came down from her perch to check out the fire, but kept her distance, which made sense based on her natural weakness to fire. Poliwag had finally decided to come out of the water now, holding a fish tail in his mouth. Poliwag and Clint stared at each other briefly, and then the tail disappeared into Poliwag's mouth.

"C'mon, find some for the rest of us," Clint said to Poliwag, who didn't understand what Clint was saying.

Clint laughed to himself, then turned his focus to a can of baked beans he had taken out of his backpack. He set the can of beans next to the edge of the fire to warm them up. Beans weren't the most exciting thing to eat, but they would fill the void in a pinch, not to mention cheap and they had a long shelf life. Plan was simple now that camp was set up, eat, feed his Pokemon and go to bed. Then he only had one and a half, maybe two days left to Littledale from here.

    Chapter 4 #10 - One Loss

Merry Richtide is shorter than her, stouter than her, stronger than her, and quite possibly more confident in themselves than she is. They introduce themselves with their full name and pronouns, all stoic and firm but with an easy smile. The idea that they are in any way soft because they are calm and unhurried feels like it would be a dangerous assumption to make. This is who Marie is up against, and for some reason they feel just as intimidating as Benji.

Maybe it's because she knows more, now.

"Now, I ain't the best at battlin'," they say, and Marie has said similar enough things to be suspicious of that statement's truth, "so it's my rules that give you a challenge more'n myself. Four rounds of one on one. Y' can't use the same Pokémon twice unless you've gone through your whole team already. If ya knock out three o' mine, you win, but if I knock out two o' yours, you lose. Fair?"

Not really, grumbles her brain. "Fair," she says out loud.

They take up their positions on either side of a grassy field. Merry flags down a soccer coach from down the path who is apparently a qualified referee, and her group of scruffy children are bribed with halftime snacks to sit nicely on the painted lines instead of clustering close to an ongoing battle. One of the little gremlins waves furiously at Marie, and she recognizes it as the rock-loving child whose wagon is behind her, currently empty. She gives a halfhearted wave back.

"Y'all ready?" asks the soccer coach. Both sides affirm, and the battle is on.

Marie leads with Tuie. She's been working on doubles and even triples for a while but now she's thinking she should have honed in on singles too- nothing for it but to go with what she knows. Merry evaluates her choice and with a firm nod sends out a gruff dog. Tuie scrabbles at the dirt nervously- Intimidate. Its name is Herdier, it is a Normal type, and its darker fur is dense and hard, acting like armor in the face of attacks. That plus its ability equals a good resistance to contact moves, doesn't it?

Good thing Tuie doesn't use many of those.

"Charge up," Marie says. Merry tilts their head in confusion.

"Now unless I'm misinformed, Natu don't do much in the way of Electric attacks."

Marie stares blankly at them for a moment. Charge up- oh, Charge is the name of an actual thing, right. Like Stunnie's. "No, it isn't- wait. I'm not going to tell you," she huffs, crossing her arms. "I need all the advantages I can get."

"Suit y'rself." Merry shrugs. "Best practise not to say things your Pokémon might mix up with other commands. There's reasonin' 'round why all these are called different names. Herdier, Howl loud!"

The kids on the sidelines mimic the dog's howl so their voices ring out in mimicry of a pack. Tuie and Marie are unmoved, Tuie continuing to execute the command she knows she should.

    "That's enough setup. Pursuit!"

Herdier bounds across the field, speed boosted hy dark energy and Tuie's panicked flutter doesn't have nearly enough lift to pull her completely out of the way. Marie wishes she could fly better- a lone grounded bird is an easy target for anyone. But that will have to wait until she evolves- for now, she relies on Teleport to stick herself at the nape of the Herdier's neck and bury her talons into coarse fur. It hops and bounds and writhes, trying to shake and even lick her off as Tuie activates Cosmic Power twice more. Merry commands it to roll over, and that's what breaks Tuie's hold- it just grazes her with icy teeth as she hops away, too, and Marie won't let it again.

"Stored Power!" she cries, and a blinding purple beam slams into the Herdier with a noise like a thunderclap. Incredibly, it stays on its feet, but even surrounding itself with the Dark-type energy of Pursuit can't dull the impact of a second Stored Power.

"That'll do it," Merry nods as they recall their unconscious Pokémon. "But that one gets pulled too."

"I know, I know." She doesn't like it. If she only had to take out three of Merry's in a row, she could probably sweep them with Tuie- just keep stacking up those Cosmic Powers and clapping everything that comes her way.

    But that's not the challenge.

The collective ooh of the children when she releases Cutie onto the field makes a prideful grin tug at the corners of her mouth, but Merry sighs.

"Shoulda saved Herdier, darn it. Hrm. Miltank!"

Said pink cow materializes in an enthusiastic cheer, echoed by the kids. Marie knows this thing- they're still popular around Goldenrod after all, something to do with a long since retired gym leader. And once again, this is a Normal type. Marie frowns.

"I thought Norman and Wally were the Normal-type specialists around here."

Merry laughs. "Sure are! Ain't a great idea to judge a team on two Pokémon- no tellin' what else I got up my sleeve. Even Wally got surprises with those Indeedee, don't he?"

    "I suppose so…"

"Start us off with another surprise, will ya?"

They're not talking to Marie anymore. Miltank waggles her hooves back and forth and the power coalesces into crackling electricity and she drives them into the ground. Water rises from the field in an electrified wave and it crashes into an unfazed Cutie, seeping back into the ground after it hits- to the disappointment of the children, who apparently wanted to be splashed.

    "What was that?"

"Don't rightly know, t' tell the truth. Metronome pulls out some rare moves sometimes. See if we get somethin' we know next!"

Miltank waves her hooves again and a tornado of translucent green leaves pick up speed by circling around her until she points a hoof toward Cutie and sends them whipping toward him. The Barriers Cutie puts between them do nothing to slow their momentum, nor the orb of water that quickly follows. Marie grits her teeth and calls out for Bullet Seed: Cutie spits tiny light seeds from every head, all across the field, and the children scream and duck, though his range is nowhere close to hitting them. The seeds ricochet off Miltank's form as she kicks up grass in the wake of its Rollout. This time the Barriers dampen the force of the blow, acting as padding between Miltank and Cutie, but Merry's aim is to have Miltank bounce back and away, burst from her curled stance, and blow a breath of scorching heat that shrivels and even blackens the grassy field below. Cutie flings a giant seed at Miltank that bursts open into clinging roots to drain its energy.

"Wish you'd'a done that before that Heat Wave got called on up." Merry's good humor hasn't shifted, though, even as Cutie strengthens his Barriers again.

Miltank waves her hooves again. This time shimmering golden scales cover her body and rub together in a clanging cacophony that has the all humans clapping hands over ears and sends Cutie thrashing in more pain than Marie's ever seen him, writing and stomping and whipping his long neck into the Miltank just to make it stop. The scales vanish as Miltank goes flying and Cutie's neck sags.

"There we go!" Merry snaps their fingers. "That's the good stuff there!"

And Cutie does look much worse off, even as Miltank's energy is drained into him. Whatever move that was, it was a big hit, and Marie has to make up for it before it can pull something like that again.

"Barrage!" she calls, and large seeds thud into the Miltank, one of them colliding with her summoned ball of green energy and sending it off course. She spins into Rollout again and the smaller Bullet Seeds smack into her hide as she circles tightly- the Barriers cushion the impact and with the energy Cutie is draining from Miltank he looks stable, but Marie still has to keep pushing!

Merry shifts just slightly as she goes on the offensive. Is that surprise? Maybe- they don't command Miltank to break her Rollout, and that leaves her an easy target. Cutie bends almost in half, neck becoming an arch with his feet planted firmly on either side, and swings all the way back- and all the way forward, to meet the rolling Miltank as a golf club meets the ball. The resounding crack makes the children on the sideline gasp and crane their necks. Merry tilts their hat back and watches Miltank go arcing into the soccer goal behind the kids, taking the entire net with her as she skids into a ditch behind the field.

"Time out!" the soccer coach calls, running after Miltank. Merry strolls after her and Marie sidles up to Cutie, who sits down heavily, neck drooping.

"Good job, buddy." She pats him, and wishes she had a restorative berry. But speaking of restoration- energy isn't flowing into him. So even before Merry and the referee reappear, she knows.

"That's two knockouts for the challenger an' none for the leader," the referee confirms. "Round three!"

Cutie returns, and Stunnie takes his place. Merry's counter is chosen more quickly than either before- a Skiddo. She's seen them around here, has looked them up- it's a Grass type.

    Bad matchup.

"Grassy Terrain" fluffs the pelt of the Skiddo, revitalizes the scorched grass, and more- the ground erupts in a tangle of silky growth, hiding Stunnie from sight but only until he moves, the long rustling rushes giving his position away easily for Skiddo to catch mid-Sucker Punch with a Grass Knot that drags him back down to earth. An angry Discharge fries some of the grass but doesn't faze the Skiddo flinging a glowing ball of Grass-type energy smack into his face, and the attempt at another Sucker Punch clashes with a Horn Leech that drains the fight- and consciousness- from the Stunfisk.

    Bad matchup indeed.

Marie grinds her heel into the fresh grass as the round is called and the Pokémon are recalled. The kids are scooting forward in anticipation of the final matchup, and Merry nods in a go on gesture.

    She sends out Pokie.

Her audience is silent but for the lone cheer of the rock-loving child.

Merry tosses their final choice, another dog that Marie has to quickly look up. Yamper, an Electric type that likes to chase after things.

Well, it won't be doing any chasing this round.

"It ain't lookin' good, Miss Mocinno." Merry tips the brim of their hat back, giving her a slow, calculating stare.

"It isn't," Marie agrees, but firms up her stance. "Curse."

Merry nods. The yippy Yamper zigzags forward, sparks coating its teeth, but the Curse takes effect in time for Pokie to Disable the electricity as the teeth chomp down around his head.

"Better turn that to Bite," Merry says calmly, and Dark-type energy empowers the chewing teeth. Pokie's face slips into a frown when he realizes, and he growls in a low, creaky way that Marie's never heard before. The Yamper backs off and responds with a hyperactive, high-pitched Howl that Pokie is unimpressed by, and Marie tells him to show that by Yawning.

    "Aw, darn. Yamper, Dig."

It digs a hole through the thick grass and into the topsoil, tunneling toward Pokie. Marie waits, but…

    "Why isn't it coming up?"

"Yawn," Merry says simply. Which means it's asleep at the bottom of a tunnel, safe and sound. Unless-

    "Pokie, find that hole!"

It's slow going, due to Pokie being… slow… and the lush grasses still obscuring the field. But find it he does. "Great! Now! Fill it with Water Gun!"

"What in-" Merry begins, but it's Marie that's more shocked as Pokie lets out a deluge of water. Sure enough, when she checks her PokéDex, it's Water Pulse that's listed in Pokie's set.

"Alright, alright, that's enough." Merry activates the recall on their PokéBall, pulling Yamper from the flooded tunnel. "I ain't about to let anyone drown. You win the match, but no kind of approval from me for that." The children on the sidelines seem torn about such an anticlimactic outcome.

"That's just fine," Marie preens. Pokie begins his slow trek back to her, though he's quickly overtaken by even Merry's leisurely strides.

"The Dell badge for ya, then, and five thousand cash. C'mon back to the gym buildin' with me, will ya? Plenty of machines to choose from and I ain't fond of rattling them off."

"Sure thing, just let me- ah, here." Pokie has made it, so she hoists him back into her wagon and they set off to claim their prize.

  • Junko "June" Enomoto
    Tuesday, September 29th
    Afternoon
    Oldale-Littleroot Township
    The time has finally come.

June waits in-front of the restaurant she had heard Avril currently works at, Ebb and Flow, and she hasn't felt this nervous in quite some time. Her heart throbs with the strength of a Pinsir, her stomach churns, and she feels a tad dizzy, but does her best to keep it under control. She's feeling tempted to reach for her pendant but holds back with everything she has.

The creak of Marie's red wagon announces her arrival at the entrance to Ebb and Flow. June quietly sighs, feeling glad she was able to make it this time. She's not sure how she'd handle this by herself, so it's relieving to have someone who must be more experienced with these sorts of things at her side.

"Hello there." June greets with a bow, feeling more collected with each passing second. Marie responds with a jaunty wave.

"Ah, June! All ready for our date? Pokie might seem a bit of a third wheel, but I'm sure he'll be good if you treat him to some hors d'oeuvres."

"O-of course." As unfortunate as it is that she'll have to move on from Avril, having a date with Marie is enough to raise her spirits. To make a good impression, she decides to show Marie the progress she's made since yesterday. "But firstly, I wanted to show you what I received yesterday- it's my third badge, the Dell Badge, which I received from defeating the Littleroot gym leader! Impressive, isn't it?"

"We're both impressive, then!" Marie lifts a necklace chain from inside her shirt and singles out one of the charms dangling from it- it is in fact a mirror image of June's own- not that she expected any less. "Your Ally Switch training couldn't have helped much, though, could it? Not in Leader Merry's format."

"That is correct- Merry only seemed to accept challenges in that format, so there weren't really any opportunities to use it, however Einstein's psychic abilities were certainly pushed to their limit in that battle. I think it would be reasonable to suggest that Einstein practicing psychic-type moves- " June pauses, realizing she started rambling without even realizing. No way this'll get Marie to think highly of her. "Umm, I mean- nevermind."

"Ah, you're very right!" Marie tucks her necklace back into her shirt. "We aren't here to discuss Pokémon, are we? There's more to life than just training and gyms. Girlfriends, perhaps. Shall we?"

Marie offers her left arm for June to take and leads them into the restaurant, dragging Pokie's wagon behind them. June can't help but grow flustered as she grasps her hand and blushes despite putting in the effort not to.

From behind the counter, a black haired girl greets June and Marie, pointing them towards a table outside, on the large patio. She then turns to a second waitress appearing behind her, and it sounds like she's definitely asking… "you got this, right Avril?"

Marie's lips curl up at the name but she doesn't even allow June to glance around, instead guiding her to their designated table and settling in with a menu each, Pokie's wagon parked alongside them. "Now, if we were older, we would likely choose a nice bottle of wine to share, yes? So what shall we do instead?"

"I thought I heard-" June shakes her head to recollect herself. She'll deal with Avril when she comes around. Right now she should be focusing on her "date" with Marie. "I usually don't drink anything other than water, but since we're at such a nice place I may as well order some tea."

"I'm partial to an Arnold Palmer myself," Marie muses. "Any appetizers catch your eye? We will have to share with Pokie, remember."

June takes a look at the menu, taking in the variety of dishes Ebb and Flow has to offer. She notices there's quite a few items that contain sweet potatoes in some way. Not that any of those are what she's in the mood for, but it's certainly interesting. "I'm unsure what a Slowpoke's diet consists of, but the teriyaki tofu skewers seem appetizing to me!"

"He'll try anything," Marie shrugs. "Are you vegetarian? There are so many meat options!"

"Oh, no, I'm not a vegetarian, it's just that I don't really like a lot of meat, especially red meat. I'm very fond of fish though."

"I'm quite the opposite," Marie laughs. "Though ultimately I prefer a balance of interesting flavors. The side here- Gogoat cheese with caramelized sweet potatoes and sautéed vegetables- that's drawing me at the moment. But! Let's see how we feel after the tofu skewers. Waitress?"

In the end, it's Avril who skates up to their table, evidently struggling to keep a straight face. "Hello and welcome to Ebb and Flow where… nevermind, I forgot. J-Just order."

Marie frowns. "What poor customer service! Now, you should know that if I were the type of customer to take offense- and many are- this would be a complaint straight to the owner of this establishment. Luckily for you, I am not. Are you, my dear?" This last part she addresses to June, tapping the table in front of the girl to cue her in.

"Dressing me up like this was the owner's idea, so…" Avril also complains from under her teeth.

Upon facing her, June freezes up for a brief moment. The plan was to show up and confront Avril, but actually seeing her has June realize she's not sure if that's something she's capable of (and that waitress outfit only makes it more difficult!) To hide how red she is, June hastily buries her face into her menu. "I'd just like some green tea, please."

"And an Arnold Palmer, thank you. Could you put an order in for the teriyaki tofu skewers as well? Ta." Marie primly shifts her attention back to the menu, and just like that Avril is dismissed. She quickly dashes out of there with the order, only saying a hasty "Thanks".

"Well done!" Marie claps her hands together as soon as Avril is out of earshot. "Showing her you're over her, very nice."

"Right…" In reality, June is far from over Avril, although she can't imagine admitting to that would look very good right now. "Um, I know you've already given me your opinion on the current situation, but… are you absolutely certain Avril did what she did out of malice? It just, um… some things about that just didn't make sense, is all."

Marie raises an eyebrow. "Do remember she told me she was intending to move on. I suppose she thought it was best to break ties with you in some way, though I can't condone her methods." Her long fingers drum on the table between them. "I don't pretend to know her reasoning, only what information I have gathered."

"R-right, of course." June replies with a forced laugh.

The second time Avril approaches their table, she looks a bit more confident. She doesn't look towards them though, instead focusing entirely on the drinks she's carrying until she eventually places them down. Only then she raises her head just enough to cross June's eyes, her cheeks turning more red as she does. "Everything a-alright?" She asks timidly, before having to look away again and focus on… not tumbling down on her skates. "If you're ready to order the main courses, I…" She tries to collect herself.

"Hm." Marie sips her drink slowly, looking Avril up and down as she does. "Oh, this is quite nice- June, dear, you simply must try it- here-" And she slides the glass over, inviting June to sip from the very same spot she had just taken a drink from.

"Oh, um. How kind of you." Come to think of it, June has yet to touch her own drink after spending all this time being nervous, so the offer is greatly appreciated. Without thinking about it, June casually grabs the glass and holds it close to her lips.

As that happens, Avril has to grab June's chair from behind to avoid faceplanting. The drink inside the glass waves dangerously close to the edge as the blonde girl apologizes and scuttles away to the next table, which she holds onto as she breathes deeply.

"Wait, wha-" June stutters, still startled and confused from her seat being rocked. "What just happened??"

Marie sniffs. "Clearly not used to her skates, is she? Hand me my drink if you're done, it's hot out here."

It's at this moment that Avril pushes herself from the table nearby back towards June and Marie. "I'm here, yes…"

"It's not polite to abandon your customers mid-order, you know." Marie primly rattles off her choice of main course and gestures an invitation for June to do the same. She ends up ordering spinach salad for her main course, although the words don't roll off her tongue as smoothly as they should. Once again, all that Avril has to do is get the order back to the kitchen.

They spend a quiet moment sipping their respective drinks, before the clattering of Avril's skates is approaching them again. This time the blonde girl is coming over slowly, both hands holding the trail of appetizers before putting it down on the table. "Here, we hope you enjoy your meal!" She adds, but it's obvious that she's just repeating a formula.

Marie finishes a deliberate sip of her drink. "Thank you. Now, while we wait for our entrees- is something the matter, Avril? You seem very distracted today."

"Distracted…? N-no, I'm…" She stumbles with her words for a bit. "I'm just focusing on work. Being a waitress on skates is a pretty risky job…"

"So it is. But your work is to serve us with a smile, is it not? I haven't seen much enthusiasm."

"Ok, sorry if I don't smile, but I'm busy enough not falling! It's just my second day on the job and I've already had some close calls…" The blonde girl wobbles slightly on her skates, as a single drop of sweat falls down her face.

"Nothing more than that? Well, then, that clears things up!" Marie claps her hands together and takes a tofu skewer from the platter.

"Um- these tofu skewers sure do look succulent!" June snatches a skewer from the platter, trying to avert her attention from Avril. She bites a tofu cube off the stick and ends up being thrown off by the taste. She thought she'd end up losing her appetite, but the sweet and tangy teriyaki taste is so good that she could almost forget the situation she's in. "Oh my- this is simply delectable!"

Marie takes a delicate bite, then offers the rest of her skewer to Pokie. "Yes, do give her compliments to the chef."

"Well sure, I-I will let her know! Thanks…" Avril promptly responds. She also adds a hasty "I'm glad you're enjoying it" as she takes a quick glance at June, but then stands there like a statue for a few seconds and once again, ends up dashing away without any more comments.

"Well, you heard. She's focused on her work. Commendable, truly, though she could do with some pointers." Marie sips her drink. "Now what?"

"Well, the reason we came here in the first place is so I could confront Avril, but if I were to be honest with myself, I don't have any idea as to how to go about that… wouldn't it be rude to do so while she's working? I wouldn't want to disrupt her at such a time."

"And when would you rather do this? She's been in town just as long as you have, and somehow she's been avoiding you. What's to say she won't run if she can?" Marie offers another skewer to Pokie.

"You do have a point. This could very well be my last chance to say anything to her, so I should seize the opportunity when it arises again. It's just that… I'm not sure if I have it in me."

"May as well let go of her and enjoy your date with me, then." Marie is matter-of-fact. "If you don't have the spine to say something, she'll never have that incentive to spend time with you, hm? So you'll have to move on. May as well start now."

"But I don't want to just do that before I get any sort of explanation as to why she's been avoiding me." June sighs. "I guess that only leaves one option, then."

"So is that what you're going to lead with?"

    "...I suppose so."

    🌼🌼🌼

Agonizing, the only word that truly describes Avril's shift. Ever since June and… that monster set foot on Ebb and Flow's patio, her heart has been aching, every beat resonating in her head like war drums. This was not the situation she expected to find herself and June in.

When she approached that table for the first time, Avril was not able to make a move, knowing that after all she was just working and that she was incredibly close to embarrassing herself in front of those two girls… her mind was focusing entirely on her skates because they were the only available distraction. Her own guilt also got the best of her - after leaving June alone on Route 102, after seriously considering going back home and leaving her behind, she couldn't really do anything but blame herself for who June was now spending some time with. It was all her fault: June was over her, and Marie won her over fair and square.

Everytime Avril dashed away from the table and into Erin or Ellen's arms, her burden was partially lifted. Their clothes would soak up the girl's tears as their words gave her enough motivation to keep at it again. Avril would give in eventually, and agree to bring June and Marie all the food they asked for, only for the same scene to repeat in front of her. Rinse and repeat.

That applies to the main course too. Avril dries her tears, grabs the plates, and slowly gets up to speed. Is this what being in love feels like? Why does this even happen?

    🌼🌼🌼

"She's coming back." Marie can see the entry to the restaurant more clearly than June can, so Avril's approach isn't missed. "You'd better be ready to talk." June's body tenses up, and she responds with a stiff nod. She proceeds to take deep breaths in hopes she might calm herself.

Avril makes herself wait, drawing curves around some newly arrived customers at the speed of Pokie, before bringing the main course to June and Marie. She goes for a little bow this time, but as soon as she's done with that, she's ready to roll away.

"Avril, wait!" June extends her arm as she impulsively shouts. Marie's fork clatters against the plate when she jumps but the girl picks it up again and digs into her meal, apparently unconcerned with the drama about to unfold.

The blonde girl clearly flinches at that, but manages to turn around and roll back to June, stopping right beside her chair. "S-sorry for that, do you need anything?" She asks nervously, fidgeting with her little notebook.

There is an attempt from June to make eye-contact with Avril, although doing so makes it difficult to concentrate ironically enough. "It's not about service actually, it's, um, well I'd really hate to disrupt you while on your shift, especially for a job as demanding as yours, b-but I…" She hesitates for a second but pushes herself to cut to the chase. "Where were you Friday at noon?"

The blonde girl seems incapable of replying, as she looks at June with wide eyes. "I just… did something stupid… I'm sorry June!" She then cries out after a bit. "I ran here without you…"

"I've just been so… so confused. I've been asking myself what your reasoning could have been, and why you didn't respond to any of my texts. I really wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt, but after giving it enough thought the only explanation I could come up with was that you just… lost interest."

"Look, you aren't even wrong but not in that sense, it's more like…" Avril has to stop in order to hold back her tears. "I didn't wanna be a trainer anymore! I w-wanted to go home! And it was too embarrassing and complicated to let you know until I felt more comfortable around you again and now I am in fact getting better and… now you know."

After spewing out those words, the blonde girl stops again and tries to dry her tears with her sleeve. But it doesn't really get better. "I-I was too late and it's all my fault…" is all she adds, as she holds onto June's chair with both hands.

"So you were planning on leaving me without even so much as informing me of your decision?" June tilts her head down to hide her sorrow. "I know we haven't known each other that long, but despite that I really felt something between us. I enjoyed the time we spent together, I felt we grew closer and closer, and I was almost certain you might have felt the same. That's why it's been so difficult for me to process that you intended to just… return to Kalos without letting me know."

Avril lets go of the chair and rolls back, covering her face with her hands. They're not enough to hold the tears inside though, and when she tries to move closer to June, her whole face is drenched. June is on the verge of tears herself, but restrains herself from weeping. Avril remains quiet for arguably too long, any attempt to make a sound interrupted by sobbing, but that gives an opportunity for Poppy to do something. After hiding behind her trainer's headwear, she floats in front of June, chirping and nodding eagerly.

"Poppy!?" June's eyes widen, the shock halting any incoming tears. "I'm… not sure what you're trying to get across?" As this happens though, it gives Avril time to work up her response.

"June… I told you, I felt so embarrassed and ashamed of myself. I looked up to you a lot, too, and I didn't want to ruin things, but that's exactly what I did!" Avril finally finds the energy to speak up again. "But like, if there's something between us, then it should stay there even when we get through hard times, right?" She asks, first turning towards Poppy, but then looking straight into June's eyes.

"I, um..." Her entire face flashes pink and she forces a cough to clear her throat, but it's futile in hiding how flushed she is. "I would assume so, yes."

"I… thanks… I can explain what happened later, but…" Avril's face is very much red as well, the combination of physical exercise, tears and blushing all rolled into one. "Just know that things are getting better, and that I'm not leaving you like that, ok?" She asks as she slightly leans towards June. "I… b-beg forgiveness…"

"I...I…" This is a bit of an awkward spot for June. After everything Marie had told her, she was expecting Avril to be a lot more cold which would have made the confrontation far easier and made her future with Marie to be smooth sailing. But when Avril is practically on her knees begging for forgiveness that presents a dilemma. She does want to forgive Avril, she really does, but how would that look in-front of her date? Does that even matter when someone she cares about genuinely seems to regret her decision? As she contemplates what to do, she nearly reaches for her pendant, but stops herself upon realizing her late grandmother's words can't decide for her.

"It hasn't been the easiest decision I've made, but I choose to forgive you, Avril. I had heard yesterday that you were ready to move on from me, but I can clearly see now that you've not only changed your mind, you also show immense remorse for your actions, and it'd be hard to not forgive you."

With one arm already coming around June for a hug, Avril stops in the middle of that motion and tries to collect herself. She takes a glance across the table, stands back up, smiles nervously, and adjusts her glasses. "Thank you June, thank you… but right, I'll just leave you to your dinner with M-Marie now and get back to work and like… if you end up liking her more in the end I could just… nevermind."

A deep breath and Avril is on her way to another waitress, who was waving at her from a distance. Poppy follows suit, not before giving June a gentle nudge on her shoulder, causing her to flinch. She then proceeds to twirl a strand of her hair with an accompanied half-hearted laugh. "That didn't go exactly as envisioned."

"Well, what exactly did you envision?" Marie puts her glass to her lips, realizes it's empty, and frowns.

"Based on what you told me, I imagined she'd be a lot less apologetic." For the first time since she got here, June picks up her chopsticks to prepare to dig in. All this drama has made her hungry. "So it feels quite nice to see she still cares."

Marie feeds her remaining ice cubes to Pokie. "She's soft. I expected you to know that. Too soft to be a trainer, she says, so there isn't much keeping her here. Better enjoy her company while it lasts."

"But… she said herself she had no plans to simply leave me like that, right?"

"Leave you out of the blue without saying anything, I gathered. But how long will she stay in Hoenn simply to please you? Do you think you have that much sway over her, after what- a week?" Marie takes a dainty bite of her food. "You'll have to put in a lot of work to make her stay. Or perhaps even a commitment. But that limits your prospects elsewhere, doesn't it? I'm sure you're aware there are girls just absolutely pining after you. Maybe you'll like one of them far more than Avril, or your goals will align much better… you're aiming to be a great trainer, yes? How would it feel to be Avril, one who cries when she battles, stuck in a partnership with someone who does nothing but battle?" Marie switches to sipping her water. "I surely can't imagine how that would go well."

"But, you said yesterday that I could do both, so would that not apply here? I mean… m-my parents, for example! They have very different careers, but have maintained a healthy relationship for as long as I've been alive!" June isn't feeling very confident in her response. It's a hard pill to swallow, but Marie is probably right.

"Hm, but do their careers directly oppose one of their belief systems? It would be incredible if they did- I would love to hear about them! Because at the end of the day, you have to consider your partner's feelings just as valuable as your own, and reconciling opposing strong beliefs is an incredible skill."

June sighs. "It's hard to disagree with you. I trust you Marie, I really do, but there's something telling me that we can make it work. But you're absolutely correct in that there is no guarantee she'll stay in Hoenn for my sake. I should be more assertive, and I wanted to be coming into this, but seeing her again wearing that outfit no less…" Her face rapidly flashes to a brighter shade of red then it already was, causing her to hide behind her hands. "...it's not easy."

"It's not easy to dedicate your future to someone you've known for so little time, I suppose. Quite bold of you in that regard! What a big commitment for you to make at… what did you say? Age fourteen? And having dated… oh… have you ever even dated anyone? Goodness."

    "Well, I, um… no, I haven't."

    "Oh. ...kissed anyone?"

"I almost did once… but still, no."

"So you'll pledge your heart to this girl you've known a week without knowing how relationships work, what you need from them, how to… do anything, without knowing what others have to offer you?" Marie sighs, dragging her hand through a lock of curly hair and twirling it at the corner of her mouth. "There's so much out there, June. You really won't take the time to explore it?"

"That's true, I suppose... Outright committing myself to someone else right now while being completely inexperienced would be shortsighted, wouldn't it?"

"Quite. But how will you reconcile keeping your options open with keeping Avril in Hoenn?"

"I'm not even sure if that's possible to be honest… maybe doing so would only make her more inclined to return to Kalos?" June says, nervously poking at her lip.

"And leading her on is such a mean thing to do…" Marie sighs theatrically. "Your little thing with her is so complicated and difficult. Doesn't it wear you out?"

"Maybe a little, but, um-" June lets out a stressed sigh. "Trying to balance the two really would be more effort than it's worth, I understand."

"I eagerly anticipate your choice, my dear." Marie stands and stretches, her flowy top flipping up in the breeze to give June a glimpse of skin. "Thank you for the date and the meal, but I mustn't do this while you have yet to choose, hm? It's unfair to both Avril and me. I hope to see you again soon enough. Ta."

And with that, she strides away, back through the restaurant, dragging her wagon behind her. Before June can even process that she's paying the bill, Marie is out of reach. Knowing what she'll have to say when Avril comes around, she steels herself in hopes that this time she can actually be firm.

For the next couple of minutes, Avril can still be seen skating around the patio occasionally, but neither she nor the other waitresses come close to June's table, as they look busy with other clients and other orders. The time it takes for anyone to approach her, making her more and more tense. Only after that, the blonde girl tries to approach June again, a concerned look on her face. "Oh… oh no I'm so sorry, I did ruin the date after all, what even…" She mutters, once again holding onto the table for balance.

"O-oh no, it's not like that! It's just that- that's not important actually! I wanted to tell you that, um… What time does your shift end? Umm, I wanted to talk to you is all, and, well this certainly isn't an ideal environment for that!"

"Uhhhh… at least two more hours, actually…" Avril runs a hand through her hair. "But maybe when the bulk of people leave, we could still…" Her voice gets more unsteady as her cheeks get more red. "Nevermind, uh… want a dessert in the meantime?"

"...Well the Jigglypuff Jello looks tasty! I'll have that!" June hasn't even finished her main course yet she's already ordering dessert. "You can go ahead and bring me the bill once you've delivered that!"

"Noted! And…" Avril attempts a smile. "I'll just take the empty dishes away for now…" She puts away her noteblock to hold all of Marie's plates, having to deeply focus on what she's doing as she skates away. She has to come back around to grab Marie's glass too, but at least she looks a bit more confident on her wheels this time around.

"Thank you!" June hurriedly shouts a bit too late. June tried to appear as though she was in control of the situation, she really did, but as usual, seeing Avril's face is enough to make her brain go numb. She'll at least have that opportunity later… assuming she can actually act on it then.

    Monday, September 28th @ 1600 - Littledale

Rest of the trip on Route 102 went off without a hitch, two nights in total, now Clint had just arrived in what people called "Littledale" which was a mashing of the names Littleroot and Oldale which used to be two separate towns that grew into each other, thus Littledale was now a part of the locals' vernacular. Littledale appeared to rely on farming, with pastures and crop fields dotting the landscape. Place like this would make finding work easy for Clint, bet any one of these farms could use his services even if it was for only a couple days.

Clint made his way to the Pokemon Center on the north end of Littledale, fatigued from travelling from Petalburg to here on foot. It was once again time to take advantage of the amenities the Pokemon centers of Hoenn provided for trainers on the gym circuit, namely a filling meal, a hot shower and a clean bed. Clint wasn't afraid of roughing it out in the wild, but he did appreciate the opportunity to reset and refresh following expeditions like the one he just finished up.

Following cleaning himself up, and doing some laundry for the first time on his journey, Clint decided it was time to fill the void rumbling away in his stomach. He was antsy in the waiting line as he went to get his dinner, baked ham with baby potatoes and a vegetable mix on the side. He knew some trainers were opposed to eating Pokemon, but eating them wasn't that far of a leap from training them to beat the s*** out of each other so Clint had no problem with eating them. Clint found himself a table in the back corner, and began to chow down.

Out of the corner of his eye, Clint saw two gentlemen, who looked like ranch hands, walk over to the bulletin board, once of them holding a piece of paper and a stapler. As that ranch hand went up and stapled his paper to the board, the other rancher tapped the first one on the shoulder and pointed over at Clint, who was eating his dinner. The two then made their way over to the back corner where Clint was eating by himself and sat down across the table from Clint.

"Good eatin' tonight friend," the first rancher said in a thick accent, grabbing a piece of Clint's ham and started eating it. Clint looked at this guy with disgust and distrust, hand clenched tightly around his knife. Finally, the second hand started to speak.

"Excuse my friend here, he has no brains or manners. My name's Isaac Winston, this is my cousin, Sam Winston. We're from Winston Ranch, you might have heard of us. Anyways let's get down to brass tacks. We're down a couple ranch hands for the next little while, run of bad luck for us these days. So the man of the house told us to head down to this Poke-mon center, ad-ver-tise that we're looking for young capable folks ready to do some work. We figured you might be interested, make you a little money."

Clint pondered the opportunity in front of him, he could always use more cash in hand after all.

"I only plan on being in town a few days at most, that work with y'all," Clint replied.

"Better a few days then no days at all friend," Isaac answered,

"Make your way over to Route 102 like you was heading over to Petalburg, look for the big Winston Ranch sign, make your way up the road till you get to the big house, be there at sunrise."

"See you then," Clint quickly remarked.

The two Winston Ranch hands took off, Sam Winston giving Clint a mean look as he walked away. Clint stared him down, then returned to finishing his meal. Once he finished, Clint took his tray and dishes over to the bin to hand over to the dishwashing staff. After the talk with the Winston's, Clint figured an early bed time would be for the best. Admittedly, in a perfect world Clint would have had a day of rest in between travelling to Littledale and immediately going to work the next day, but we didn't live in a perfect world and Clint was, at least in the words of his grandmother a, "strapping young lad," which in the eyes of the older generation made him an unstoppable labor machine capable of working day after day. So he was going to pocket a little cash tomorrow putting his pre-Pokemon trainer skills to use. Wasn't the worst case scenario he supposed.

    Forgiveness
    Tuesday, September 29th - around 10 p.m. - Littledale Pokémon Center
It's ok girl, she said the words! She forgives you!

Avril tries to reassure herself as she skates back to the Pokémon Center, but really, she still has more doubts than answers, and that makes her afraid. Is June just willing to forgive her, or is there something more? What is Marie doing exactly? How does this whole love thing even work? In any case… she's already agreed to meet up at the end of her shift, she can't turn away now.

Poppy is enjoying the breeze from her usual perch, and doesn't look worried at all about the outcome - if anything, she's still got to be thinking about how Avril and her colleagues got away with another day of keeping their work skates. Now, if even the trainer could be more like the Pokémon, things would likely be better…

Regardless of that, though, the time comes. The doors of the Pokémon Center open up in front of Avril, red cheeks and a bittersweet smile on her face. Like yesterday, she slowly glides around the lobby, this time looking for the only girl who could probably beat her in a blushing contest.

Eventually June is found near some seats lined up against the walls, and right besides her is a new Pokémon she hasn't seen before, which looks almost like a Ledian but is definitely stranger. With the way her head is tilted downwards it's clear she's not paying much attention to her surroundings… hopefully she's still feeling good.

"Oh, here you are June!" Avril greets her as she skates towards her seat. "Hello again, sorry if I made you wait." She blushes heavily, while standing in front of her.

"Oh?" June pokes her head up and looks at Avril with widened eyes. "Oh! Um, hello there! I needed to talk to you about something… but I suppose you're wondering what this Pokemon levitating next to me is, right? This is Einstein, believe it or not! You see, after an encounter with a wild Pokemon he was able to evolve into an Orbeetle!" She unpromptedly explains in a cold sweat while Einstein reintroduces himself with a nod.

"Hm…" Avril isn't sure whether to be impressed or intimidated, but… in the end, it's still Einstein. And Poppy seems to think so too, as she eagerly waves at the Bug-type. "That's very cool June, congrats to both!" She smiles, still waiting to hear about what June wants to discuss.

'Yeah…" June gives a stilted laugh and clears her throat before releasing a hefty sigh. "But as much as I wish I could list off everything else that's happened these past few days, I should just be straightforward with what I wanted to discuss with you." She pauses for a moment and continues with hesitation in her voice. "I had said I forgive you earlier, and I absolutely meant what I said… but I've been talking with Marie about it lately, and um, how should I put this… well, what she was trying to get across was how can I trust you won't leave Hoenn? I mean, that might not be exactly what she said, but-"

Avril can't help but roll her eyes. She hates that Marie has to be involved but… now all she should really do is reassure June, and she does have some points to make. "Ok, look…" The blonde girl takes a deep breath, "I'm doing better now! I was able to bounce back from that situation and found people who would help me and even if I'm not going to be a great trainer, I'm sure I can stay here for a good while. Plus, leaving isn't that easy anyways. And I'm sure that…" Avril's face becomes more red as she pauses.

"I would still stay in Hoenn for y-you! And if even this journey ends, I'd still find ways to meet you again in Kalos or Johto or wherever…" She mumbles, her heart beating faster with every word. She doesn't really know if she can fulfill those promises, but she's at least proud for sounding this convincing. "You f-forgave me so I have no reason to hide from you…"

"Why, that's very nice to hear…" June starts to tremble but snaps out of it by rapidly shaking her head. "...but even then, there are other aspects to consider. For instance, I decided one of my goals is to enter the Hall of Fame which means I plan to focus more on training and battling my Pokemon, and I know that's something you struggle with. If we were together… a-as travel partners, I mean!... I think that might make you more inclined to leave Hoenn. It wouldn't be fair to you."

"B-but you look like a good trainer, someone I have to learn from, and…" Avril is already more in trouble with this question. Sure, Poppy would love to travel with such a trainer, as evidenced by her chirps, but Avril? Not quite that enthusiastic. "And…"

That's not really where she wanted to go and, in fact, she feels almost stuck. "If it was too much for me, I still wouldn't need to leave Hoenn…" the blonde girl mutters, almost whispers, before looking down at her skates. June's answer can't help but remind her of the Monday afternoon skating session with the other waitresses, and how eager they were to see her improve, and how she felt like she was disappointing them…

"Sorry, I'm tired… may I sit here?" Avril asks, gesturing towards the free seat next to the other girl.

    "Oh… please do!"

And so, the blonde girl slowly twirls and lands on the seat. "So yeah… that is a valid point but… I wouldn't leave Hoenn for that. That's what I know…"

"And I'm glad to hear that at least. But if you can't contend with how it'd be unfair to you, that does lead me to my next point. While I really do li- care for you, I'm not sure if I could quite make that sort of commitment right now. I mean, I'd certainly like to…" June starts to wander adrift while her cheeks grow a brighter shade of red. "...but that was another thing Marie brought up! There's so much to do, so much to see, but if we were together, not as traveling partners, but as gir- I mean, together in that sort of way- well, wouldn't the energy put into that exhaust both of us from trying to balance our incompatible goals?"

Marie here, Marie there… Avril clenches her fist, but not the one on June's side. As much as she doesn't like the older girl, or how she got herself involved in all of this, it's really not easy to argue against her points, because she is more experienced on this whole thing.

She doesn't reply right away, and instead looks around the lobby, noticing Einstein and Poppy playing in the background. Both can float now, so it's almost obvious for the Fairy-type to take the chance and teach some of her moves to the much larger Bug-type. That also reminds her… of yesterday. Again. But rather, the thing that happened after the skating practice. The fateful meeting with Tsu, her kind words… Avril sort of plays with her skates, letting them go back and forth.

"Marie says a lot of things… but I don't think she's right this time!" She finally explains. "Well, we sure got lots of things to see, who knows what the future holds, but like… like… we have to enjoy the good moments we g-get to spend together, that's what I w-wanted to say!"

"What do you mean by that?"

"W-what do you mean what do I mean?"

Avril looks down. "I got some friendly advice too, if… you could call it that way. And it says that even if we go through bad moments, there will be good ones to even things out…" She looks at Einstein and Poppy again now, slowly raising her head. "Like in Petalburg, yes. So what we have to do is that we can still get those moments and that nothing ruins them!"

"Right, I see. I've certainly heard similar advice before… but I think I understand what you're trying to say now. The balance between good and bad is an essential part of life, but what I worry about is how there might be a bit of an imbalance."

"Uh…" Avril feels more tense now. "Why do you think that…?" She replies, hands trembling.

"As I had said, my aim to enter the Hall of Fame might be hard to reconcile with how you feel about Pokemon battling. I saw how you were during your battle with Wally, and some of my current Pokemon or other bug-types I hope to catch are about as, if not more brutal than Venus. If I were to have a rough battle like that with you by my side… I'd be hurting you in a sense and I'd hate to do that. And that's only one example of how that dichotomy might not work out so well…"

The blonde girl just glides over that topic. "June… want something to drink while we continue? I could go and get something at the Cafè…"

"...well I suppose I am a little thirsty, but um…" An intense effort seems to be made by June to stop choking on her words. "...I'd like to know what your response is first."

Internally, Avril is rolling her eyes multiple times per second. Part of her wants to believe that June did get over her, and is just forgiving her only out of pity. Part of her simply thinks June is caring too much about her, and paradoxically, that's being a problem. That results in the blonde girl making a bunch of incoherent sounds before speaking up, urgency in her voice. "Ok whatever, I won't be there to watch those battles if you're afraid I'd hate them! But I'll be there in other situations, I'll wait for you in the Gym lobby, and…"

Avril at this point just gets up on her skates again. "W-what would you like, June?"

June sits in silence, mouthing multiple answers before deciding on anything. Einstein zooms in as if to check in on her. "...I'd just like some water, please."

The other girl just nods and quickly reaches the Café area of the Pokémon Center, where she's able to get a cup of tea for herself and a glass of water for June. And… some time to breathe. After some concerned looks from the staff, she comes back to June with what they ordered, and places her tray on a nearby table. Or rather, tries to.

The table is much lower than Ebb and Flow's and it's easier to lose balance. Avril falls backwards, however she doesn't actually hit the ground somehow. It turns out that Einstein used his psychic energy to prevent her and the beverages from falling to the ground.

The girl's yelp also is incredibly short, and quickly gives way to a positively surprised look on her face. "T-that worked… that was so good, thanks!" She says, her body still somewhat stuck. "I… oops, that was my bad."

"O-oh no, I'm sure it was no problem for Einstein! Especially after today, when he tried keeping a nearly 200 pound Tauros in place. It couldn't have been too much to help you out." June says with a stifled giggle, looking and sounding slightly less anxious.

"Wow… he really must be so strong now! But…" Avril now has a sad smile on her face. "I bet he has a heart of gold too." As Einstein's powers wear off on her and she finds herself sitting on the floor, she lets out a giggle herself, looking towards June and blushing even more than usual.

"I hold no doubts about that. Ever since he evolved, he's tried comforting me as much as possible whenever I'm down and uses Confusion to help people. It's something I actually need to adjust to, because he was completely immobile as a Dottler, but now he almost always wants to stay outside of his Pokeball."

"Aw…" is all Avril can say, as she slowly gets back up and sits next to June again. "That's lovely, he really sounds like… Poppy!" She then comments, taking a sip from her tea. Maybe talking about Pokémon for a bit will calm her down…

"I suppose they have a few similarities, yes." June giggles. 'He does occasionally use Confusion in ways reminiscent of Poppy's Fairy Wind, albeit more reactive than proactive."

"Yeah… Poppy sure likes taking the initiative!" Avril nervously laughs. "But it's also true that she's not that powerful just yet…"

"Well, does Flabébé evolve from or into anything?"

"Oh, uhm…" Avril stops for a moment, taking a look at her starter Pokémon, who's playing with Einstein again. "She definitely does, but… well… there's a simple problem. If she evolves, she might become too big to stay comfortably on my head! It's been like this for years now and habits don't die so easily…" Avril smiles. She knows that Poppy's evolution might be something she has to deal with in the future, but she's not very concerned about it now.

"I understand what that's like, trust me. When Einstein first evolved- well, you were there when it happened. I couldn't carry him around anymore because of his weight, and I felt I grew slightly detached from him. But it was a necessary step in order for him to grow and get to where he is now. It paid off in the end, so to speak."

"I remember that, yes…" Avril looks at June, this time a bit afraid of having put herself in a corner. Now she's telling the blonde girl that she should evolve Poppy, or what?

"Look, maybe it will be the same for us too, but it has to happen at our own pace I suppose…"

"...wait, do you mean 'us' as in you and Poppy or 'us' as in you and I- I mean, I only thought that because it does sound applicable to our situation so assuming the latter is the case, um..." An unsteady finger taps her lip. "Commitment is something that I'm not sure if I'm capable of, so if we were to take it at our own pace isn't the worst idea… um, that wouldn't be leading you on, would it?"

Was it really what Avril meant though? Probably not, judging by how nervous she also looked. But June's reply seems to give her hope again. "It's going to be fine," she says, trying to sound at least a bit convincing. "We're already having a good moment now, chilling in here after whatever happened on my shift! Well, I think so, at least."

"...satisfaction is earned through trial and error. That's what my grandma always told me, and somehow her words always seem to come back to me." June says to herself with a chuckle before turning her attention back to Avril. "I think that might be closer to what you were trying to say earlier, right?"

That also goes onto the list of relevant advice Avril has received lately. The girl nods with a smile as she holds her pendant before speaking up again, and blushes slightly when she does. "Yeah, that… that sums it up, June."

A wide and goofy looking smile forms on June's face as she's flushed as well. "I'm sure we can work something out. I do remember you mentioned you were improving, which does bode well… b-but just to make sure, you're absolutely fine with everything, r-right??"

"Hm… everything everything? I don't really k-know but…" Avril giggles nervously. She's not really good at lying, she'd just get herself found out. "But one thing I can promise! I'd let you know if I don't like something, instead of running away like I did…" she smiles. She really looks like a little Piplup, doesn't she…

"That's certainly a good start." June responds in a comedic tone. Her pupils dart left and right, clearly unsure of what to do in such a situation and takes her time to formulate a follow-up. "So, um… what happens now?"

Avril finishes her tea right at that moment - it sure helped her stay awake for a bit longer - and that makes June's question even more fitting. The problem is that she doesn't have an answer ready, and once again remains quiet, pondering what to say.

In the meantime though, she leans on June's shoulder, wrapping one arm around her. The other girl definitely reassured her enough to do that. "I don't- I don't really know, guess we'll find out, but… thank you for trusting me, June…" She says. Her face is as red as ever, but June shouldn't be able to see that.

June's body stiffens up, and all she manages to say is "It's no problem, really," before slowly resting her own head against Avril. To tell the truth, the blonde girl couldn't have expected a better ending to her day.
