prompted this thread because i really can't decide how I feel about fishing in SM, or any of the games for that matter. While it wasn't at all an exciting mechanic before, it seems to have been simplified to the point of being completely dull, in my opinion.

how would your ideal fishing system work? would you be able to fish freely, or only at certain locations? would there be several different types of fishing rods or only a single one? what other features/mechanics would you like to see implemented?

I'd really like more variety in fishing rod types. Basically the exact opposite of what SM did. Having higher tier rods for the later game is important, otherwise you just end up stuck with an area that's 80% Magikarp no matter how far along you are. I would loooove to see multiple types of bait that you could switch out - perhaps some of them make it easier to find certain types of pokémon (though obv most fish are water-type but the bait could attract some pokémon with a particular secondary type I guess?)

    thoughts?

How to improve a mechanic that is incredibly boring irl? Let's see:
    - Pokemon shadows that signify something happening (adds some more anticipation)
    - the character not randomly deciding to stop (every fishing attempt is going to be a success, but it can take a while)
    - rare Pokemon are harder to catch
    - likewise common ones are easier to get
    - no stupid bubble mechanic
    - different kinds of bait/sinker/etc for different areas/depths
    - no tile/rock based mechanics, but there can still be places in bodies of water where you're more likely to get certain species
    - hidden fishing spots with rare stuff
    fishing in statues

    Take. It. Out.

Fishing is something that no RPG - no game, even - has ever gotten right. It's always a bloody gimmicky nuisance. Pokemon is a little better than most for being simple, but it's still extremely irritating and I'd sooner see the back of it.

I honestly think that they just revert/or completely switch up the fishing system for the next games, Sun and Moon's just felt awful and restricted. As for how it could be improved, I would love to be able to purchase different lures (like a Magikarp, Horse lure etc) and have more customisation that could perhaps give you a higher chance of 'hooking' a certain Pokemon, as for the system itself, I'm not too sure how I would change it, but I just don't wanna see the system we got in SM again :/

Fishing SM is seems rather awfully restricted to certain areas unlike previous gens where you can fish freely, if the mechanic were different than the original or not SM-ish like not catching magikarp all the time and use various lures and baits that be swell. SM is just too nerfed or narrowed down for fishing.

I think they could improve it By splitting the first stage pokemon into one area And the second or final evolution into another area

This would make it much easier to be able to find this specific Pokemon in this water bubble and so on.

I haven't played Sun & Moon, but replaying Emerald after Black had completely simplified the fishing process (although the different patches of water are cool and I hope have remained), I think the whole having to time your tugs thing is quite nice and shakes it up a little.

being able to cast out a huge net and choosing which pokémon to battle against. idk, i really can't think of viable ways that they could improve on the fishing mechanic in pokémon. it seems to have gone as far as it could possibly go imo.
