How has your taste changed?

Like, what did you use to be into and what are you into now? Do you think your taste is "maturing" for lack of a better word?

Personally, I feel like I've been in a rut lately and having been branching out into new areas. I reread a bunch of books I've already read and I'm mostly currently watching new seasons of shows I've already started.

I'm not sure how much my taste in music has shifted over the years tbh. it's definitely shifted in terms of, like, I like some different stuff than I used to, but there's still a good amount of carry-over and not much pinpoint-able changes in pattern. I'm more willing to listen to more out-there stuff, actually. That's A Thing.

as far as movies I think I'm also shifting towards more Out There things in general and I have more of an awareness of things not concerning plot than I used to which has, again, shifted what kinds of movies I like for, but I'm not sure there's much like. cut-and-dry change. idk if that's maturation or not! Who Knows.

my taste in literature has remained very similar since I've first gotten into it which I would kind of attribute to the fact that it takes longer to get through full books than it is a movie or an album so I've had less contact time to truly hone what it is I dig. Someday.

My music taste has changed over the years. I went through my sort of "emo" stage a few years back, for awhile and I liked falling in reverse, blood on the dance floor, pierce the veil, stuff like that. I still like it, granted but just not as much and stuff.

my taste in books i think has shifted slightly from like, romance and stuff to more stuff based on mental health that also includes romance or some twist on typical romance books. i don't think my taste has changed much other than that, though.

Yeah, I think my taste in everything is constantly evolving. Even though I'd have considered myself a cinephile a few years ago, I wouldn't have leapt at the opportunity to see a 5-and-a-half hour French silent film with a live orchestral score... which I did yesterday!

I kinda hope that my tastes change and adapt with the times; I wouldn't want to be one of those old coots who bemoans everything modern and wishes everything was better 'in the good ol' days'. Similarly, there's a lot of art from the good ol' days and beforehand that I'd like to be able to experience and evaluate on its own terms (rather than my biases and preconceptions from growing up when I did).

As far as music is concerned, my tastes have definitely changed over the years. I think it can be categorized pretty nicely as:

Childhood & early teen years: top 40s and pop
Teenage: pop punk and classic rock
    College: classic rock & indie
Post college: ??? All of the above??

That being said, it's not like I ever strictly listened to those categories and I still love everything I loved back then now, it's just the frequency of which I listen to them that's changed.

As for books, I feel like I've stayed solidly the same over the years. I still prefer memoirs and non-fiction, especially if it pertains to art.

I feel like my tastes have improved with films but that's a more recent development.

This is more of what I was getting at. We do change, and we still hold on to most of what we liked before, but there are usually a few skeletons in our closets we'd rather forget about.

Like, I have some awful goth rock music I listened to years ago when I was also listening to the The Cure. I still listen to The Cure, though not as much, but I've completely given up on the others because they're honestly pretty bad.

My music tastes have changed drastically from when I was in my pre-teens. Back then I listened to strictly Rap, Hip-Hop, and R&B because that's what I grew up listening to and to be frank, didn't know anything else. When my dad met my step mom, I started becoming more accepting of pop and country music since that's what they primarily listened to and it just became the norm for me. At this point, I'm really open to music in terms of genre and language even.

Music hasn't changed much. I love the synth waves, both new retro and classic Numan. I love Metal and Rock 'n Roll. Classic Hip Hop and rap (old school and golden age).

    I also drink now.

My music taste has widened, but certainly not changed. There are very few artists that I don't listen to anymore based on my taste in music rather than my taste in them as a person - my core interests definitely haven't wavered. I actually can't think of anyone I've dropped because I didn't like their music. Like, to be honest, I probably still listen to a few artists that I wouldn't necessarily say I musically like simply because I'm a sucker for nostalgia. My core interests have never exactly been varied in the first place, so I'm only ripe for future expansion as time goes on.

As for movies, I'm in the same boat as Monsieur Cat Dog. A couple of years ago I thought I was somewhat of an amateur film connoisseur, but going out of my way to watch a screening of The Passion of Joan of Arc in a basement theatre in the city earlier this year showed me just how far I've come in terms of exploring what cinema has to offer. I've also noticed that my taste in movies has shifted heavily towards those that are either a) pure in their life-affirming belief in the goodness of the world or b) the self-aware, the snarking and bitter or c) those that are unapologetic in their tackiness. John Waters forever.

Similar to Adri, my taste is more broadened than changed, I would say. I've always liked all types of music -- barring most country. And with the internet as it is now and has been the past few years, getting to new stuff and new genres is easier than ever. I've always been open to all kinds of music, it was just a bit of a stretch back before YouTube or music streaming and such. I got a lot of my music through Top 40, Yahoo!, or friends. And those little sound clips you could put on Neopets pages, haha.

But yeah, I've consistently liked the same stuff and as genres have broadened their spectrums, or new stuff entirely has come our way, I always find myself listening and enjoying it. The only time my taste in music was limited was when I suddenly decided only metal and screamo were good back in like...10th grade. What a weird way to isolate myself. Hm.
