How will the time differences affect the games?

My understanding of it was like Caethil said: Sun has a normal day/night cycle while moon is nighttime when it's daytime IRL, and vice versa. Honestly when I first heard about it I thought it seemed like a bit of a gimmicky way to distinguish the two versions, but thinking about it, I can sorta see how this would be a cool feature. Since there's different Pokémon available based on the time of day, it'll be easier to catch certain Pokémon in one version than in the other. And of course there's always the possibility that there will be other side effects of the time difference that we just don't know about yet c:

Night time is usually the time I play my games the most. I pre-ordered Moon first, so it will take some time getting used to the time flip.

Would really throw me personally for a flip though, if playing real-time at night would result in Moon's in-game to be daytime and vice-versa.

Makes for an interesting experience though; glad I'm going to be playing Moon as my main game. n.n

I'm pretty sure that's actually how it works.

Like if you're playing the game at 3am, in-game the clock will be 12 hours forward so it'll be 3pm in-game.

Maybe somebody should make a time chart of some kind to demonstrate. (I guess I will if nobody else does)

Something I don't really understand though is that they outright said that the Alolan Raticate totem will be exclusive to Pokemon Moon, but what if you are playing that trial in the middle of the night? Since it would be daytime wouldn't that mean Gumshoos would appear? (even in Moon) Do they just not allow you to participate in trials at night in Sun and during the day in moon?

I am actually looking forward to playing a game where the time is reversed, so I can definitely understand you there.

I'm getting Moon, so it looks like on my first few hours of playing my game will be set during the night! By the looks of things the towns and areas appear to be substantially different depending on the time of day that you're playing. Obviously, I prefer how they look at night. 8)

I'm having quite a mixed feeling at times when knowing Sun and Moon will have 12 hour differences, because sometimes I might feel a bit odd when playing Moon in night time irl when it's shown as day in-game. However, this makes me wonder if they will give different missions depending if it's day or night in the game, or if they would give different mons just like how it goes in GSC and HGSS.

In overall, the concept of 12 hour differences looks interesting for Sun and Moon, alright, even though it's tad bit unusual, and I hope this doesn't affect how people played the game and all because of that.

It'll definitely be a weird feeling for some, but I think it'll be fun! ^__^

Also, I don't get what you mean when you say "I hope this doesn't affect how people played the game"?

I just hope that people won't get freaked out when realizing the time differences without seeing the trailers and game guides due to the aesthetics, that's all. c:

Except for a few scenes, time in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon is tied to the actual time.

So it seems only a select few changes will be taking place. Not to dissimilar to previous titles unfortunately.

I'll be getting Moon and my first opportunity to play will more than likely be after school. This means my first experience with the game will be at night and tbh I'm really excited for this. It'll be so cool to see the beaches and towns all quiet and potentially having different Pokemon appear :3

I think I finally pinpointed why I'm so conflicted about the time difference in Moon. Going out and about in the daytime is fairly mundane, but as someone who generally doesn't go out much at night, the feeling of exploring during nighttime is really cool and exciting. So playing in real-time night but having it be in-game day may seem a bit boring... It's going to take a change of mindset to get used to. But something to look forward to is that instead of watching time change from afternoon into night, it will be from night into morning. I'll get to see the in-game sunrise pretty frequently, and that's pretty cool!
