is anyone else told they say 'thank you' more often than they need to?

I say "thank you" and "sorry" both too much. I'm aware of how much I use them, but it comes out anyways.

Back home I get told I say "sorry" too much but that was really it. Since moving to Spain though, when I converse with people in English I get told I say please, thank you, sorry, and yes ma'am/sir too much! It's really weird getting told I'm "too polite". It's to the point people joke I must've served in the army at some point.

I think I say thank you a normal amount but I do get told by Chinese people I say it a lot. Chinese people just don't say thank you for a lot of things the same way British people do though, and that's fine I guess, just different cultures.

The occasions that get brought up the most by my Chinese friends are me thanking taxi drivers or when waiters bring anything to the table at bars or restaurants. Those are occasions when I think it's just a basic courtesy and would feel strange if I didn't...but in China it's not necessary and can even be seen as oddly overly polite.

There's nothing wrong with saying thank you too many times. The problem is people not saying thank you enough, imo.

Not specifically that. But I do recall for instance a friend saying I was very polite to a waitress before when I thought that's just how I'd normally talk in a restaurant...

I think it is a common courtesy to say thank you to one who helped you in certain situations or praised you for the help you did to another person. I'm a writer working with a writing company. I receive comments from many clients for good works and I always mind to say them thank you for every good comment. The clients are also very keen to reply with thanks for great works. You should keep it as a habit.
