That's pretty exciting! We've never had a secondary starter Pokémon this early in the game before. I'm not exactly sure which starter I'll be picking, though... maybe Squirtle, since it was the first Pokémon I had in Pokémon Blue. Or, maybe it could be Bulbasaur, since it's my most favorite of the trio. =)

I know that these starters will be available in the national dex, but will they actually be a part of the Kalos Pokédex, too?

    Mega Charizard

How do you feel about Mega Charizard? I personally feel there was the missed opportunity of giving Charizard a Fire/Dragon typing. While I love it's new ability of Drought I'm curious what others think about this. It has the potential to replace Ninetales as the Sun Summoner on Sun Teams. Do you think a Fire/Dragon typing would have made it too powerful? Charizard currently sits in the bottom of the Smogon Tiers, in my opinion a large reason for this is because of it's typing, large Stealth Rock weakness. Of course it can be argued that Ninetales would be in the bottom without it's ability.

    Thoughts?

  • The reason Charizard was NU is because he was outclassed by Moltres. Now that Mega Charizard has Drought, this reason will disappear.

Charizard by himself is a much more capable Pokémon than Ninetales. The only reason Ninetales is used at all is Drought, since it's a very mediocre Pokémon otherwise. It has an easier time entering the field than Charizard, but Charizard can Roost any damage it takes. Once Charizard is on the field, it can activate Mega stage and bring Drought to the field.

I think the Fire/Flying combination is bad, because it's redundant for the most part, but it's also unique and one of the things that distinguish Charizard from other Fire Pokémon. It's not Dragon-type, but it learns plenty of Dragon-type moves, having perfect coverage save for Heatran. While arguably having Dragon STAB would be more useful, it wouldn't do much for it, and would leave it vulnerable to Ground-type moves.

I can see what you're saying. While it retains the SR weakness it isn't scared of Earthquake like other Fire types. Also with the Flying secondary type it will be able to participate in Sky Battles, potentially the only weather summoner. How much people care about Sky Battles will have to be determined later but I believe at least a few competitions will exist from time to time.

  • I hope they give a good reason in game as to why we are getting another starter and bit just getting them just cause; because if there's no storyline reason for getting them then they should be for the end game but atleast this saves me from having to trade for a Charizard which I was gonna try to have any way

I wonder if we will get another set of starters based on game like x will have sinnoh starters and y will have unova starters after the elite 4

  • They slimmed Charizard down and I tend to like brutal, bulky-looking Pokemon. But I think that was for the better because most people prefer the opposite of what I do. It's a little plain but I think they didn't do a shabby job at all. Venusaur, on the other hand... I wanted thorny vines, spiky jungle leaves and a more primordial-looking appearance. Oh well.

  • I always felt if Charizard was Fire/Dragon, then its ability should be Levitate to make use of its wings. So it'd lose that ground weakness, be neutral to fairy, neutral to ice, neutral to water. Then it'd be much harder to counter, and switch in much more easily.

Mega Charizard looks a lot lighter than its normal form, and it also looks slimmer. This may make Charizard less capable of taking hits, but I suppose it'll make it a lot faster. Charizard is not such a slow Pokémon, but I have no problem with sacrificing some of its defensive stats to raise its Speed. It'll allow it to always hit first, and it will also make it easier for it to start sweeping as soon as it gets its Attack or Special Attack boosted.

  • The Mega Charizard design looks great, not to mention he has the drought ability now. All tho in my honest opinion I would have preferred they making him dragon/fire type. Why? Because right now he's weak when it comes down to fighting against rock Pokemon and water( in most cases).Having him as a dragon type would make him more substantial against those types. And since now there's a new type called fairy that are effective against dragon, they'll have one more weakness. Maybe it won't be necessary because he has a couple of dragon moves that he can learn. Even so, I still see more room for improvement.

On the other hand the other two starters... Will not even be mentioned. I've lost my pride as water user.

  • I think all three of them are beautiful. It's about time for something to change the Kanto Pokemon up about it, and I think they are so aesthetically great, and will become pretty awesome Pokemon to use in battle!

As for which one I will choose, the choice is hard. I already know for a fact that Chespin will be my starter of choice, unless its evolutions are god-awful, then I will probably choose Froakie. However, assuming that Chespin will be my choice, I am stuck between Blastoise and Charizard. So far, there are not many water types introduced that I particularly like. Clauncher is swell, but a bit boring to me, so Mega Blastoise would be so awesome to have! I've gotta hand it to Mega Charizard though. For a long time I just didn't like Charizard a whole lot. I didn't hate it, but I just wasn't into it. With its evolution though I really really like it! My dilemma with it though is that I think Houndoom will be in-game and c'mon that's my favorite Pokemon ever. If not Houndoom, I know we get Torchic and wow I really like Blaziken and its Mega evolution. The choice is just too hard :c

I'm soo so happy that all this happened though! Game Freak has scored again with these Mega evo's, first with Mega Absol and now with these. (I'm not saying the other Mega evo's aren't any good, but I mean come on... Absol looks like every fangirl's fan-art since forever)

    1st gen starter
    torchic
3 starter pokemon to appeal to different aged pokemon fans, 1st gen to appeal to fans mainly in 20s torchic for people in there teens and 6th gen to appeal to new audience so i see this as a good thing for the game

I like this a lot more than getting monkeys again. Choosing will be quite hard for me. I know I'm getting froakie and I'll also get the event torchic, but I just find bulbasaur useless in game. I'll likely get charmander so I can have another pokemon for sky battles later on.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but this completely explains the 5 rivals. We know that you get your first starter from your friend. I'm going to speculate that he already has a pokemon (possibly Eevee or pikachu) since he brought the starters to you. You and 2 friends choose your starters. Then the remaining 2 rivals tell you that they're going to the professors lab for their starters. But since they have no pokemon of their own, you escort them there. After you get to the lab, the professor realises that he has an extra starter, so he offers you one.

This seems far fetched... until you watch the video on the official x and y web site and it shows you standing in the professor's lab with Shauna and your rule 63 with his text bubble reading "It'd be fantastic if you took another pokemon with you!"

  • Some people have stated that Mega Venusaur's design is too subtle a difference. But I have to say, the embellishments of the more intricate tree-vine design and pink flower on its head are tasteful and really enhance Venusaur's jungle-foliage aesthetic. This is by far my favorite mega thus far. Though, my first run-through I will have to pass on him since I want limit my team to Kalos-exclusive pokemon.

I have to say though, Charizard, has a very nice design as well, though I am not quite as wowed; though I can see why those of you Charizard lovers are going crazy over this great design!

And...I have always been ambivalent about Blastoise, but this megaultion worked really well including the arm cannons and sharped face; however, that huge cannon on its back is just so gauche. I am just a fan of things that are more understated. So, I still remain quite ambivalent about the Blastoise line. (except for my love for Wartortle)

I'd go with Charmander. No telling how the Mega Evoloution would be on a Charizard xD. Pretty epic I'm sure.

Hows that Charizard Mega Evolution for ya? :)

For the Kalos Starters, I'm torn between Froakie and Fennekin. Normally I'd reside with my water types but Fennekin looks like she has a lot of promise in her evolutionary stages. Though as a male, Fennekin could look really suave.

As for the Kanto Starters, Squirtle would have been my pick but after seeing Charizard's Mega Evolution, I think I'm starting off the new generation with a 'Flare'.

  • I predict, that the majority of people, will choose Charmander. It's always been one of the most popular...
so, getting a Bulbasaur or Squirtle through GTS by breeders....isn't going to be easy.

Also: Kalos-Chespin, Kanto-Still deciding between Charmander and Squirtle.

Speaking of which...Bulbasaur will probably be left in the dust...it's not too popular.

So I heard something about MegaBlastoise's pokedex entry or something
It can hit targets SIX MILES away
Just imagine that, you're walking along and you hear something
"What sounds like a water fall?"
You turn to look and...HYDRO PUMP TO THE FACE
