I personally don't think it's necessary. Sometimes you don't have time to answer to a PM right away and other times you maybe don't even want to. If the sender can see that you have read it but not replied, it might fuel any impatience that was already there.

I would rather this idea didn't happen for the reasons above. A lot of the time I'm sure it'll be reassuring knowing that the PM has been delivered, but I don't think there has ever really been a case in which it hasn't? In general just assume that once you've delivered a PM then it has sent and they'll read it when they wish to, because adding a receipt makes it kind of pushy haha.
 
What if you just want to read it and get back to it later? I've done that before. Not to mention a new PM just begs to be read even if you don't plan to answer right away, well, at least that's how it is in my experience.

And we already have some thing called the post bit which is displayed at the top right of all posts.

This is already displayed in the postbit :3 If you don't see it, you can enable it in your Options from the User CP.

EDIT: now tabor is the ninja. :p
