Greetings fellow trainers!
I've recently returned to the pokemon universe after a six-year hiatus, and would like to share my tale of woe.
I was an avid player of red/blue, and was jazzed when my yellow version pikachu learned to surf. Then, it happened.
I popped in my brand new silver cartridge the day it came out and went about the good work of training. I returned to a pokemon center to heal my troupe, and when nurse Joy gave them back to me, she informed me that one of my guys had been 'infected' with something.
Do you see where this is going? In less than a day after I started playing, my pokemon had caught the nigh-impossible-to-catch, pokerus. This frightened and confused me, and my small mind just couldn't deal with this new unknown. (No pun intended.)
Without researching what the pokerus was, like say on a reputable pokemon Forum, and seeing as how I just started the game, I switched it off and restarted a new game. Yeah, that'll teach the game who's boss.
I later learned how rare/beneficial the thing is, and have not seen it since. It really is a tragic tale: Boy catches pokemon, pokemon catches pokerus, pokerus catches boy by surprise, and boy folds under the pressure like the dope that he is.
Back to the here and now, I'm hoping to trade for it, but I think that's a topic for a different part of these Forums.
