Now, WHAT if a Grey version was made instead of BW2?

it's interesting if only because there's a big difference of opinion on whether or not bw's story was better or b2w2's story was better. if a grey version were to release, it'd largely follow in bw's footsteeps in addition to a few things here and there, maybe, just maybe a better post-game with pokemon world tournament kept alongside the exploration stuff. but perhaps that's me being overly optimistic, but this seems to be largely in line with the third games we've gotten so far.

i can also imagine some quality of live improvements here and there (can't think of any off the top of my head, but they're usually par for the course in third games). honestly, i feel like it'd just be b2w2 except it'd be bw's story again, kinda.

In my opinion, a third version would make the plot of BW a bit akward. Lemme explain: in the og versions 3rd versions that we have, the villain goes after the box art legendary; Team Magma/Aqua go after Groudon/Kyogre while Cyrus goes after Dialga/Palkia (I've played HGSS but not Crystal, so I can't really speak for that one). In the 3rd versions, the plot is almost the exact same, but the baddies go after both legendary Pokémon with some kind of interference from the third of the Trio, Rayquaza/Giratina.
In BW however, the plot is heavily engrained in this Yin/Yang dynamic. You, as one of the legendary two heroes, must fight with Zekrom/Reshiram against the other hero, N.
Now, if Ghetsis did a Cyrus in the og BW, that would alter the plot of the games so heavily that the entire premise would have to be re-written. None of the key Ying-Yang elements would be kept if Ghetsis took both dragons, and you might as well just write something else entirely at that point, which is what they did, and I'm so thankful for that.
If you think about it, BW2 do kind of follow the "3rd version formula". The region stays the same, there are new features, and the baddie goes after the third Legendary Pokémon. But BW2 were SO much more interesting than mere 3rd versions. It's such a shame they couldn't do the same with USUM.

Sequels are more interesting and I kind of hope when Gen 5 gets it's turn for a remake it can continue into a trilogy.

If Grey were made, people would just complain that Game Freak never wants to change up the formula. Grey would just be Black and White, but Kyruem instead. It'd pretty much be the exact same. It wouldn't be interesting, which is why I'm glad it never happened.

They would have made less money from selling one game instead of two - probably about 1.5 million less, if we go by historic sales figures of third games, which are generally around 7 million instead of 8.52 B2W2 racked up.

That's about it. The plot for B2W2 is basically the same as BW - which is Gen III's plot only with Gen V Legendaries - and the additional features they added would have just been postgame. B2W2 were basically two versions of Grey with aged-up NPCs from BW for all the difference it made.
