5th Gen Official English Name Discussion

Well, okay, think about it this way. Muk was way back in generation I. You can't blame the creators for whatever name they thought of at that point, because that's when the first games started to come out, right?

Now fast forward to now, when names like "Throh" and "Sawk" are introduced, right after some really creative and beautiful names, like "Shaymin", "Dialga", "Palkia", "Manaphy", creative names like that, and when you look at it that way, most of the English names come as a direct shock to you because they seem so different from how the names were the generation before. Like they're lacking creativity, or something. .__.;
True but just like the powers of the legendaries (which gen 4 being the peak with names and Pokemon like Arceus) the creativity of the names go down...hmm odd as Gen 1 had plain legends who didn't really rule anything like Land and space...I wonder if Gf...
To me though they are pretty nice names...Pidove was the only name that I didn't really like this gen...

Yeah it reminds me of Rhyperior too but the "perior" does come from the word Superior...lol I can guess why Snivy's line has that in it's English name, after all it probably see's itself as superior to other pokemon seeing as it's a Royal and kind of snobby looking pokemon :)

I just found out that the complete list is on Serebii and I'm checking them out. My favorite so far is Amonguss, I believe was. There's a fungus among us indeed.

Oh good, it's confirmed that Aloe isn't Verra. ^_________^

Derk, you're saying people prefer the bad designs instead of bad names? Right, so people totally didn't care how Serperior, Emboar and Samurott looked, and instead cared a lot more about Tepig, Oshawott and Snivy's names. I think the former caused a lot more drama than the latter. From what I've seen, really, people get more annoyed over designs - the starter evolutions being prime examples of this.

Anyways, I'm honestly fine with all the English names now. I would've liked if they chose other names, but really, these are awesome as they are. Plus I'd be more annoyed at bad designs, rather than names. D:

Oh and I figured out earlier, I can totally pun Amoongus when thinking of Not Afraid. :D

The design is much more important than the name I think.

What good is a great name if the pokemon looks like a dog's dinner?

I get used to names fairly quickly, for me a bad name is the same as a bad design, I'll get used to it over time. Might never love it but I'll at least tolerate it.

The town names being based on clouds is funny ^.^ A nice change from the common flower/plant theme. And so far I love all the new town/city names.

Yeah I prefer designs over names. I for one do grow into most pokemon designs, but if I haven't grown into them after a few months then I tend to never, ever like them nor get used to them. Bibarel, Raticate, Hypno, Palkia etc. all still make me barf over their hideousness, but the names I always get used to. There isn't really any names that I don't get used to :/ The same will be for B/W I am positive. Even the horrible name Whimsicott.

I'm also glad Aloe wasn't called Verra. I mean Vera would of been okay, Verra sounds weird ;\ But heres for hoping Aloe will stay the same!

I don't really have any dislikes of the names, I mean I haven't read the whole list but for the names I've seen on the Official Pokémon website, such as Deerling, Blitzle & Pidove, I like them so far!

Reshiram? Zekrom? Kyurem? Meloetta? Eelektross? Victini? etc?

Those are amazing names, and very creative.

And the likes of Turtwig and Combee, etc, aren't very creative.

But there's no use complaining about the names. They will always be called that, no matter what we do. Might as well as get used to it.

Some of the English names are bad, but I'm one of those people who really do hate the designs of the Pokemon rather than the names. Except for maybe Conkeldurr. That has got to be the worst name ever. Someone quickly go make a meme of it!

One name I really do love though is Vanilluxe. Deluxe + Vanilla absolutely stole my heart with it's poetic justice and stuff. Saying the name for me is like a simple serenade which I love to follow. I also like it's sprite as well, with it's "HURRR IM A ICE CREAM! *chimney*"

Kamitsure should be called Carmen ;) I posted that on Pokejungle xD

I'm glad Aloe won't be called Verra :)

@Twilight and 649:
Every single one of the names you call 'beautiful' and 'creative' with the SOLE exception of Eelektross..... is either a DIRECT copy of the Japanese name, or one or two letters off it. >.<

I posted that on pokejungle too (that was before I saw someone else, probably you post about it)

Great minds think alike. :p

I'm hoping for Felicity though, although somebody on pokejungle said it can't be Felicity because that's the name of the person who gives out OT Prizes? :S Is that true?

Honestly though, any name is better than Charga.

What are you talking about? Eelektross's name in Japanese is Shibirudon.

Now lets conpare

Eelektross
Shiibirudon.

They look nothing alike.

Nimbassa City is awesome!

Here are my own guess on the last four cities with a Gym.

Hodomoe City: Pyroca City (Pyrocumulus, a cloud caused by volcanic eruption)
Fukiyose City: Lucent City (Noctilucent, the highest clouds)
Sekka City: Lonimbi City (Cumulonimbi, the clouds that produce hail)
Souryuu City: Fractus City (cumulus fractus, a cloud characterized by jagged shapes)

Also, just to say something else, I saw on the Italian Official Pokèmon B/W Website the region is called Unima. I don't know if it's only for Italian version (it would REALLY suck ._.).

And, finally, I don't know if the list of English names posted on sites like Serebii.net is 100% real, but I saw that Emolga (Emonga) and Druddigan (Kurimugan) are confirmed.
Also are Timburr (Dokkora) and Tympole (Otamaro).

Samurott is honestly, I think, a cool name, lmao. And Serperior. Kind of makes me like the starters a bit more.

They said with the exception of Eelektross...

Anyways, I consider both design and names to be equally valuable in liking Pokemon. I consider all Gen I Pokemon always and forever original (duh) and masterpieces of the Pokemon world, Gen II is close, but I remember when it first came out parts of it kind of struck me (especially Celebi) as.. dumb, but not a lot. Gen III came and I was super excited, however I wasn't a fan of Mudkip and really didn't like Marshtomp. It also had some other dumb factors, but I let them slide UNTIL, they added Deoxys and Jirachi. I hated them, and they had too many legendaries. Then Gen IV and I was hate'n and love'n all around. I loved the design for Abomasnow, Rotom, and Torterra, the names didn't really bother me as much I still thought they were creative, but toned down since Gen I. But Pokemon like Empoleon, Drifblim, and Bronzong I hated. (K, no joke) I had designed Drifblim when I was 6. I made my own generation of Pokemon and drew them in a book, and one was a hot-air balloon Pokemon.

So here's Gen V. I think the names overall are a bit half-assed, ya know? If they put more creative thought and time into it, I bet they could make better names. Now the designs; for some I love (like Volcarona and Hydregion and Samurott), but overall again they seem... meh. Woobat and Swoobat are dumb, the ice-cream Pokemon are also dumb, could've done better with the polar bear- could've done better with a lot. I think the whole fad of being 'cutesy-wootsy' that's swept Japan has effected Pokemon too much and it's hurting in the design, but cultures are cultures and what is is what is. The names are there and so are the designs and they aren't changing. So overall I still like it with minor disappointments I can live with :/

Any confirmation on the event legendaries (other than Victini) or Meloetta's formes?

Unless Serebii has a source he's not willing to mention, nope - officially, we've had no reason to assume their English names, whereas the rest were all contained in the leaked list.

Why are Woobat and Swoobat dumb? Again, as what's usually asked when people say something is "dumb" - could you do better in the time period they had to create all the Pokemon, as well as design the main game.

I actually like those names, especially Fractus. :)

Well, Unova is different in other languages, so if that site says that's the region name... then that's the name for the region in that language. XD

As for confirmations, you mean on PokeBeach? No, Emolga and Druddigon aren't confirmed - WPM just chose to use those names when describing the cards. The actual cards are in Japanese, which in no way indicate that Druddigon and Emolga are their English names.
