5th Gen Official English Name Discussion

Snivy's a great name, I really got sick of the whole Smugleaf thing, and Snivy fits much better. It's not just two relevant words tacked together, they blend together quite nicely into a natural-sounding name. Snake/Snide, Ivy... Yes. I like it, even if I don't particularly like the Pokemon itself.

Tepig is a horrendous, awful name. Not only does it not sound sensible whether you pronounce the first OR the second syllable, but it's a horribly clumsy elision of two words, plus "tepid" isn't even that relevant given that it means lukewarm - not very firey at all. It's almost as though they regretted making Pokabu so awesome in the first place - first they gave its evolutions Fire/Fighting typing, then they give it this awful name. At least its evolutions should have better names (they couldn't really be any worse) but there were so many better names suggested...

Oshawott doesn't do much for me, but it doesn't offend me either. It's a bit awkward, but there we go. I haven't really seen any better suggestions anyway, given that Wotter (the best I've seen) is a pretty daft, oversimplified name.

I'll get used to them all though, so no worries I guess.

Snivy's a great name, Oshawott was okay, but Tepig...what is this I don't even. It sounds like 'the pig'. I absolutely refuse to call Pokabu 'Tepig'. I'm so going to rename every Tepig I have as 'Pokabu'. Argh, I doubt I can get over this!

Correction. :)

OSHAWOTT = COOL 2 SAY

And Nintendo stomps on our head to remind us that no matter how good our ideas are they want full credit.

Tepig?
Seriously?
SERIOUSLY?

Pokabu, you have just lost your dignity.

Snivy is tolerable, Tepig looks like they got lazy, and Oshawott makes me think they just over thought the use of putting words together. @_@ Being so used to the Japanese names, it'll take some time getting adjusted. It'll happen eventually though.

People mention Snivy (no d'uh) and Oshawott on here already. Go PC! :D Tepig, urm no. They should have gone with my Flarig. But I do like the use of "tepid" which means lukewarm. Maybe Flarig could be the evo.

Imma miss saying Tsutarja, Pokabu and Mijumaru.

Snivy sounds like a nickname T___T Tepid is awkward. Oshawott is a mouthful. Snivy is just SO obvious. Like where did they get that from x___X

At least Snivy is better than Smugleaf for a name. The other two will just get fairly obvious nicknames ("Teh pig" and "Osha w00t") thanks to the previous posts on this thread.

And no, Teh pig's final evo will not be named Ganonpork.

Let's face the facts here; The names will eventually grow on all of us.

I pretty much already love them all except for Oshawott. They really could've done something better.

Maybe it's final evo's name will be Canonboar instead of Ganonpork (which sounds odd in my opinion).

Well.... seeing that everyone's talking about the basic stage starter names, I'll just add some more speculation names for the other Pokemon. :3

After a day, I figured Snivy actually sounds greats. Tsutarja has two syllables (In Japanese Language), as does Snivy.

Sorry Smugleaf people, but Snivy wins ^^.

I love Snivy, sneaky snake lol. Tepig, ehh they couldve done so much better than that. Oshawott is a pretty beast name (lol for a beast pokemon). But I will still stick with the grass starter; Snivy <3

LOLOL those are great names

OMG! you like Snivy?! I hate all the new names especially Snivy, it sounds like Sniff-y OMG! WTF?! just cuz it has a big nose dosen't make if Sniffy, if they tried to make a combination of Snake and Ivy the could have done a MILLION TIMES BETTER!!!!!
so here are my verdicts:

Snivy: like the above, Sniffy, worst combination of snake and ivy EVER!
Tepig: where'd they get that from?! Temperpig? it's certainly not as bad as Snivy but it SUCKS!
Oshawott: certainly the least bad of the three, but still sounds to mixed up.

old reveiws:
Tsutarja: kind of annoying to say the first few times, i remember i was like WTF?! but it gets better the more you have to say it.
Pokabu: the most understandable, it's fine although i have no idea where they got it from.
Mijimaru: also pretty annoying to say the first time around, but ya get used to it.

all in all the Japanese names were better than the english names, my sister cried when she heard that her favorite of the new starters had been called Snivy.
