Yeah, but not all devices can go on anime streaming sites, handle mkvs, or make transferring mp4s/avis the quickest affair, hence the convenience. Hulu, Crunchyroll, and Netflix are widely available services that you can use with your Smart TV, your gaming devices, and your Chromecast (or similar devices). Going on streaming sites or moving your torrented anime to these devices or to any TV not already connected to a computer is an incredible hassle otherwise, and I'd rather not have to keep lugging my laptop from place to place to watch things (My 32' TV's my usual anime-watching spot because my Laptop's always connected to it, so torrents, downloads, hurrah or whatever, but in the off chance that I want to watch something on my 70' for the sake of visual/audio bliss, it takes a little work).
Personally, I do prefer downloading anime to take advantage of MPC's upscaling/downscaling capabilities, but if I want to watch something and I just happen to be near my larger TV (or if I want to watch a visually stunning movie, though in this case I'll generally have it and, again, want to take advantage of MPC), having the others around helps.
It's ultimately quality vs. convenience and what matters more to you in the moment, really.
