I need to find out how to grind in this game. These ability points don't grow on trees, and the quests seem finite.
Nah, quests aren't finite. Some are retacklable and a shitton more become available as the game opens up, so try to get some story in there along with other quests.

Have you reached the auctions, yet?

Ah, well you don't have to rush through the game, but it gradually opens up and I don't think you've really scratched that surface yet. So don't try to get everything done right away or grind because time is precious, and though there are time-sensitive quests, as you progress there'll be more and more to do.

I'm still not sure what Fate is. I thought I had some sort of idea, and I've seen Zero's opening a billion times thanks to Osu so I got to "see" some of it, but when people so easily accepted the idea of a Magical Girl Fate anime that clearly went out the window.

So I have absolutely no idea.

It's an interesting one.

I know for a fact that the three routes are very much different, and I'm only about 80% done with one of them, so even I can't say for sure yet what it "is". I have seen Zero though and I've got a basic understanding of Prisma☆Illya.

Thematically, it's an urban fantasy with a reasonably interesting magic system and heavy ties to mythology, in which magicians are thrown into the consistently reoccurring Holy Grail War where they get to summon the spirits of old heroes and fight each other to the death.
A magical battle royal is a really appealing idea, and with famous legendary heroes thrown in you're in for some fun stuff.

And that's basically what Fate/Zero is. It has the intrigue and the cool fights and it feels inherently mature. However it was made as a prequel to, and is regarded as something that should be experienced after, Fate/Stay Night.
F/SN certainly looks like the odd one, then. Because it's an erotic visual novel starring an almost entirely teenage cast, and has heavy slice of life elements (at least the Fate route does, I think the other two focus more on action and sex/mindfuckery respectively). It certainly works for what it is, but I was as surprised as any other secondary was when I started reading it after having experienced Fate/Zero. It and especially its array of spin-off media have noticeable elements of not taking itself too seriously, too (every bad end in F/SN ends with a short fan service scene in which some of the female characters essentially play around and make meta jokes).
Prisma☆Illya is definitely an aspect of that (with an especial focus on the fan service). It takes a very popular fanservice character from F/SN, places her in an alternate universe where the events between F/Z and F/SN didn't make things (such as herself) as fucked up (seemingly, at least), sparkles her up and has her go do cute, magical, lesbian things with equally cute, magical, lesbian girls.

It's lewd. That one kiss scene was ten times better than any of the awkward sex scenes from F/SN.
