Chit-Chat: On Tuesdays Oryx and Triforce think it's Wednesday

As genuine as you might sound Alex, not everyone you meet will feel the same way if you have a tattoo in reference of a girl you dated in the past. It could actually hurt potential future relationships. If you're willing to withstand that kind of judgement then sure, go right ahead and get it. After all, it is your body in the end. I personally don't think it's the best decision that one could make, but it's not my decision in the end so do what you feel is right.

Seriously, though, don't get a tattoo of PokeCommunity.

Don't. I f-ing mean it.

I'm going to find you in 10 years and hold you to this.
"Ah, I remember that. The program was so much fun but went to ♥♥♥♥, but I loved it anyway… I remember PC too. All the good and bad people mixed together in a big pile for me to dig through… Mmm, my first relationship… she was so cute and meek and confused and distraught, and I helped her up and split her pain…"

I think it'd become a very sentimental and emotional reminder of the fun and hardships I had in life. :)

I think a genuine relationship wouldn't hold on to tidbits like that… maybe I'm not one to date someone as shallow as to hold me to a tattoo of a past relationship, eh? I'd be interested in someone who would be more likely to turn it into something positive, e.g. hear about what went wrong, use it as fuel to strengthen our own relationship, etc. Maybe that's a bit all over the place, but you get what I'm saying, right?

A tattoo of PC's logo?

But hey, if you wanna do that all power to you. It's your tattoo and your body, but I would think a little harder about getting that one. :{

See, this is why I said I'd ask you in 10 years, not ask you now what you believe that you will think in 10 years.

I feel like you'd benefit from a "letter to the future". You'd write something, anything about your life right now. What you're thinking, how you're thinking. Your struggles, your views and whatever else comes to mind. Then you can read it in ten years, see how you've change. Maybe make a video!

In fact, I'd recommend this to all of you.

I did that at 16 actually and had it mailed to me four years later. It was sooo cringeworthy.

Tattoos are stupid anyways, especially for me because I often tend to lose interest in things, so if I got a tattoo, I'd eventually get bored of it and regret getting it.

Unless your tattoo is a mark for doing something badass like leading the tribe into battle against a larger tribe and winning or killing a rabid mountain lion with your bare hands, a tattoo means jack.

I'd hate to do one of those letters to the future because I feel like at 23 I'm old enough now to be completely self-aware of anything that would be cringeworthy in the future, so if I did it and looked back on it in 10 years and it was in fact cringeworthy then I'd feel so terrible lol

You're free to opine as you please, but if we're giving suggestions maybe you ought to remember that tattoos are a personal choice and that you should respect that.

I'm sure there's always something new to glean from your past self-- having a record of it just makes it easier to examine it.

Yeah I didn't think it was worth it. All it did was make me cringe and throw it away because everything I thought I knew was so dumb. It didn't give me any further insight into anything because I know the pitfalls my personality had without reading my own words back.

Mmm, yes. A typical response.

It does wonders for your perspective.
Ehhhh. I'm not really sure I agree with that. Ten years from now, I'll know the flaws and whatnot about myself that are present today. I don't really need a letter to remind me of them or to put things into a perspective I already had developed from naturally growing up with time.

In other words, you want me to keep my opinion to myself because it's too harsh. But you just said "you're free to opine as you please."

Also, believe me, I'm all for personal choice. I'm a libertarian for goodness sake. But that doesn't mean all personal choices are good.

Nah, you don't need it.
Maybe even having it wouldn't do you much good.
Still, for me it's always better to have something I don't need than to just forget and waste a good lesson.

Harshness isn't a necessary quality when it comes to stating a position.

I was on a site that did something like that for every new year. We read the old message to ourselves and then write a new message the same day for our future selves. It was marvelous.

No, but it's necessary for making your position extra spicy. It's the harshness that gives it power and makes it feel like a punch to the face and as any good debater knows, a debate without fists flying is a boring one.

An excerpt from my old account on a forum at 13:

-I am one of those that do well in school. I don't deny it, nor do I flaunt it.
-I adore anime. I'm a self-proclaimed otaku.
-I will never ever be a ghetto person.
-I listen to all types of music, but mostly alternative rock.
-My favorite bands are My Chemical Romance, Panic! At the Disco, and H.I.M.
-I love every Pokemon game up to Gold and Silver. After that, I hate them and mock them at every passing opportunity.
-My friends and family are my life. I will protect them as such. They are mine. Don't touch them.
-I tend to hold grudges.

I was basically the worst.

Yes, of course. The appeal to emotion.

Very good to rely on when you don't have much else.
