I wish I could put my Diamond team instead of my Platinum, but I've got a money-saving game-swapping circle going on with my friend, and she has it right now.

Currently my team is a Slugma with five eggs, but for normal play-through and the like I use the following:

    Lv.73
    Empoleon - Plato
    female, Bold
    @ ---

    Flash Cannon
    Surf
    Shadow Claw
    Drill Peck

    Lv.69
    Leafeon - Callisto
    male, Hasty
    @ ---

    Energy Ball
    Synthesis
    Magical Leaf
Strength (Eeveelution in bondage; feels good, man.)

    Lv.60
    Electabuzz
    female, Lax
    @ Cheri Berry... ^^'"

    Thunderbolt
    Rock Climb
    ThunderPunch
    Discharge

    Lv.62
Staraptor - Iz Fieair! (No Questions Please)
    male, Brave
    @ ---

    Defog
    Close Combat
    Fly
    Brave Bird

    + 2 Random Slaves

Honestly, though. They're all slaves to make it easy to traverse the game. I didn't try too hard this time 'round. Definitely looking forward to the US release of HGSS so I can not only re-visit Johto (and re-pwn it) but so I can get Diamond back to play again. I think I prefer it to Pt.

What should be my 5th and 6th pokemon?

What should I use? I have a Staraptor, Abomasnow, Feraligatr, and a Linoone.

Rock/Ground type to cover your weaknesses (cept the Fighting one, which Staraptor can cover).
And a Dragon, due to their awesomeness (i can give you a Dratini if you want)

Since the actual pokemon game is relative easy to beat, I try to use only my favorites, and I might even keep some unevolved just for fun.

    I have a level 6X Charmeleon, level 100 Snorlax, level 8X pidgeot, and a level 8X Flygon.

My team on Pearl beasts already and quite a few of them are low leveled.

    Dragonite:
    Level 80
Lonley Nature; Likes to thrash about
    EV trained in Attack
    Item: Expert Belt
Attacks: Dragon Dance, Outrage, Fire Punch, Earthquake

Gyarados (this one helped own a level 100 infernape):
    Level 52
    Adamant Nature; Likes to Run
    EV trained in Attack
    Item: Razor Claw
Attacks: Dragon Dance, Waterfall, Ice Fang, Giga Impact

Torterra (this one also helped own a level 100 infernape):
    Level 57
Naughty Nature; Proud of its power
    EV trained in attack
    Item: Quick Claw
Attacks: Razor Leaf, Wood Hammer, Crunch, Earthquake

    Staraptor:
    Level 69
    Rash Nature; Highly curious
    Item: Shell Bell
Attacks: Aerial Ace, Fly, Close Combat, Brave Bird

    Gengar:
    Level 73
    Bashful Nature; Quick tempered
    Item: Spooky Plate
Attacks: Hypnosis, Dream Eater, Shadow Punch, Shadow Ball

    Rattata:
    Level 1
    Serious nature; Good endurance
    Item: Focus Sash
Attacks: Quick Attack, Super Fang, Assurance, Endeavor

Rattata helped me own my rival's level 74 Empoleon. XD It could have owned it, but then it wouldn't have been level 1. (frowns) So technically, I could have owned Empoleon, but I didn't want Rattata to level up. XD

About my Torterra and Gyarados owning a level 100 Infernape, I was battling my cousin who had a level 100 Infernape (that I trained!) and it was a double battle. I had already knocked out the rest of his pokemon and only Infernape remained. I'm pretty sure that Gyarados used waterfall and Torterra used Earthquake and owned my cousin's Infernape. (sighs) Fond memories.
