The Penny Arcade Expo, or PAX for short, is one of the year's biggest highlights when it comes to video gaming. In short, it is a time in which developers and gamers from across the globe are able to meet in one central area - well, technically four - and showcase new games as well as just sharing their overall love for video gaming. Each year, Penny Arcade hosts four PAX's: PAX East in Boston, PAX Prime and Dev in Seattle, and PAX Aus in Melbourne, Australia. Overall, it is an amazing experience that one should experience at one point in time in their lives if they are an avid lover of video games.

Why hello Prince from Katamari Damacy

I've personally been lucky enough to go to two PAX Easts: this year's one (that just wrapped up yesterday) and last year's event. I had always been a big fan when it came to following the news that trickled out of PAX, and it only occurred to me last year that because I went to school in Boston that I could literally just walk over to the convention center when the event was happening. Any boy may I just say, it is one hell of a fun time. Right when you walk in you are greeted by cosplayers, developers, and gamers galore and going down the stairs you are awestrucken by the view (see the picture above for last year's PAX view.) It actually is really overwhelming, as there is so much to do and see and so little time to do it all in.

    Spoiler:
This year specifically though, I got to cross off all of my main points of interest. I've only been successful in obtaining a one day pass, so as much as I'd love to hit every booth there unfortunately I have to pass on some. My first mission was to seek out the Rooster Teeth booth, which if you don't know is a comedic video game company that makes Red vs Blue, Achievement Hunter videos, and RWBY. Last year I had been able to get a signature with Ray, Gus, Miles, and Kerry, so I was curious to see who was there this year. To my utter disbelief, it was the entirety of Team Lads! Ray, Gavin, and Michael were there, as well as Lindsey, a person who has quickly been going up the list as one of my favorite members of the company. It took a long time to get through the line, but eventually I was able to get a picture with them, get my 3DS signed by all of them, and overall just have some awesome one-on-one conversations with them.

    Spoiler:
After that I had decided to hit up the Borderlands The Pre-Sequel booth! That was probably the only regret that I had with the convention; not because the game was bad or anything (it looks pretty tippy top if you ask me), just that when I walked in there I didn't know that they were just showing the game to us, not letting us play it. So it sucked a little waiting an hour and a half in line for something that you misunderstood. However, all was not a loss though. I actually randomly bumped into Jordan (Captain Sparklez) and Mark (Markiplier) while waiting in line, two amazing Youtubers with awesome video gaming channels, and was able to get a picture with them as well! If you would like to see my thoughts on the new Borderlands game though, check out a post I made about it here (as I just don't really feel like typing it all out again haha.)

    Spoiler:
However, probably my favorite highlight of the day was playing Transistor for the PS4. If you don't already know, I'm a huge fan of Supergiant Games and their arcade game Bastion, so when I found out that they were showcasing their newest game I just had to play it. Even more, I got to meet the creators of the game and had them sign a Bastion poster that is now hanging behind me while I write this. The game itself is absolutely incredible and plays very well (it's a combination of a turn-based strategy and hack-and-slash game). Trying to put the experience into words wouldn't even give it half the justice it deserves, so if you'd like to see a trailer for the upcoming you can click here. Before playing this game, I was really on the fence of whether to buy myself a PS4 or Xbox One for my current generation console. However, after seeing the power of the PS4 through Transistor and the comfort of the PS4 controller compared to the Xbox One's, I think I'm probably leaning towards a PS4 now.

Leeeeet's play! Myself with the Rooster Teeth crew

But just overall, my PAX experiences have been absolutely perfect. I love how when I was just waiting in line for booths everyone was having their DS's out and battling each other, it really created this sense of a community. You meet a lot of interesting people there and I love just hearing about their gaming backgrounds and just share in the overwhelming charismatic atmosphere that floats around the place. Even if you can't ever make it to a PAX, I definitely recommend going to something similar. It really does open your eyes to what games are out there, but also it's just a great way to make a lot of new friends.
