So, to the surprise of absolutely nobody, Sony's ninth generation console will be called the Playstation 5.

At the time of writing, we actually know little about the PS5 beyond that it's actually called the PS5. We know what the dev kit looks like - with rumours that the actual console will look like a more polished version of this circulating - and we know it will be backwards compatible in some form with at least PS4 games. There has been a little information revealed about what's under the hood of the console, but not as much as one might hope for or expect. Rumours are that it's costing around $450 per unit to manufacture, but with the suggestion that the price will be "appealing" to gamers, that doesn't necessarily mean it will cost more than this.

What are your thoughts on the PS5? Would you be willing to pay $500 or more for it? Would the dev kit design by satisfactory for the final console? Any exclusive games you'd like to see? Will this console echo the PS4's success, or struggle like the PS3 did?

Backwards compatibility sounds awesome, but I don't see myself getting one any time soon. My favourite franchises are generally pretty slow to hit new generations so I'll probably have a few years of buffer before I "have" to upgrade and hopefully by then the manufacture and sale price will go down from whatever it ends up being or at least a slim might come out that won't be as ugly as that potential launch console.

I think any hint of backwards compatibility after years without will be impressive enough to get people buying the system, though, so I hope they keep that aspect of it. It wasn't a success-maker when the PS3 launched because BC was the norm for Sony consoles back then, but now that everyone's had to keep everything hooked up for years, if they dabble in older games, any reason to be able to tuck one or more of those consoles away would probably be welcome. I'm kind of sceptical that it would be compatible with anything earlier than PS4, though, despite what some of the rumours say.

Not getting the ps5 day one, but I do have plans on getting one before the end of next year. The ps5 should be worth the $500 if that is the price with what is inside the console itself. I would appreciate at least 4k 60fps for games minimum, but if Devs go with higher framerates than that I would be fine with that.

As for design, I actually like the dev kit design myself so it would bother me one bit if that was the design for the launch model as well.

I already have one game I will be getting for the ps5 and that is Godfall. Hopefully for the cross gen titles the current gen variant will also work on next gen since like I said I'm not getting the ps5 day one and I don't want to have to repurchase said games.

I will most likely be getting one as well and if there is disc backwards compatibility for all past generation PlayStation games... that's an instant get for me. I doubt it though. 😢

Regardless I most likely won't be getting one until 2021 at the minimum because the first batch for each new gen always seems to have some sort of issue/problem that has to be worked out so I'll be waiting for that and when I actually have the money for it. lol.

My PS4's still perfectly usable, so I'm in no rush to buy a PS5 tbh. I'll buy it once the library's grown to a good size, or if there's an exclusive that's caught my interest 🤑
Not a big fan of that dev kit's central vents - wouldn't the sides just expel air into another each other? The V shape is a great concept though, wouldn't mind if it made it into the final console.

Really hoping that backwards compatibility is a thing beyond just PS4 games, because if it is, I'll probably buy a PS5 pretty early on. I've got a bunch of PS3 games I can't play anymore since my old one died, and some of them I really miss. If we don't get it though, I'll likely hold off for a few years, and wait for the game library to build up a little bit, and focus on the backlog of PS4 that I've been meaning to play for like the last 3 years.

I don't mind the looks of the dev kit but it's quite the departure from the last three generations. I think I'd like to see it get more refined and streamlined. That being said, I will definitely be getting the PS5. I've been interested in the PS4 for a while now because I like the selection of games available and have always preferred the Sony consoles to Microsoft. With the PS5 around the corner though, I'm going to just hold out until then and capitalise on the backwards compatibility by catching up on PS4 games I've missed out on (that will hopefully go down in price) until prices drop a bit on any PS5 titles.

I would love for the PS5 to be backwards compatible down to the earlier gens as well. I can't see myself replacing my PS2 since I have so damn much game data saved between those memory cards but I wouldn't be totally against replacing my PS3 if the five is compatible that far back. I find that notion kind of dubious though, as nice as that would be. Still, just being able to go back a single generation would be an improvement over the PS4 and it'd be enough for me.

As for the price, I'd be willing to pay around that mark if it came down to it, but I'd prefer it to be a fair bit cheaper and I couldn't justify going much higher than that since I'd have to budget months in advance to afford it.

I am almost certainly going to get a PS5, but I'm definitely not paying £450+ (because of course pounds will equal dollars in this scenario even though $450 is closer to £350 and even with VAT it's only just over £400) for one, because that's an absurd amount of money to pay for a games console. The only scenario I can see myself paying that kind of money is if it's FULLY backwards compatible with PS4 discs and my PS4 dies...which is very possible, because it frequently sounds like it's about to explode.

I really don't give a damn what's under the hood or how much it costs them to make it, though. This obsession with resolution and framerates that is prevalent in the AAA industry right now, to me, just speaks of a painful lack of imagination and confidence in the quality of gameplay of a title. These things are not what make video games enjoyable to me, and I'm not impressed - I can't even tell the difference between 60fps and 30fps in practice tbh - so if anything gets me to buy PS5, it'll be the games, and the features like backwards compatibility. If it's backwards compatible with PS3 games too I will probably go out of my way to buy one as long as it's under £500 at that point...I will not pay a lot for high end specs that I can't really appreciate, but I will pay a lot for continuity.

So whilst I am very interested in the PS5 and plan on buying one, the price point matters a lot to me, because the justification they may use for that price point isn't something that I will personally find to be acceptable. If I see things like ray tracing, 4K visuals, and various components being used as a justification for a higher price than £400, I'm just going to turn away and wait for the inevitable price drop in a year or two, or the holiday season sales.

And really...I don't think Sony should be selling these systems at a profit per unit, if they're costing that much to make. That might sound ridiculous, but when you consider that Sony have sold systems at a loss before and that they can easily make up the loss through subscription services and digital sales, it really isn't. Selling a system at a loss per unit to make it appealing to consumers is a perfectly viable strategy and one that HAS worked...remember, what made PS3 unappealing at launch was its outrageous price. I think they may have to do this, because they are very much competing in the same space with Microsoft, who could just as easily have a success with the Series X the way they did with the 360. Just because Sony are riding high on the PS4 doesn't mean that they can't crash and burn the way they did with the PS3's disastrous launch. It's unlikely, but it's still a possibility.

BUT at the same time, I am willing to concede that a higher cost for the console is acceptable if it means games stay at the same price. I'm not prepared to pay £50+ for a game as it is - I will rarely pay over £40 - and if they up the RRP to £60 or more, I'm going to be a LOT angrier than I would be with a high entry cost. Games are already too expensive when you take into account the common cost of DLC, and the cost you have to pay to play online. They should not be increasing the price of games. Between the console and the games, I'd rather they increase the price of the console.

I don't mind the dev kit design...it makes a certain sort of aesthetic sense I suppose, given the cooling system they're apparently using and the V shape. PS5 looks like a V. Hahahaha, etc. It's not the ugliest console I've ever seen anyway, and I'm less interested in what it looks like and more on how much it costs and what it's going to offer me for that cost.

on the fence on whether or not i'd get a PS5. i feel like i'd really only enjoy a handful of titles on it (the eventual Tales game being one of them), but other than that, from learning how little i touched my PS4 before eventually selling it, i'm definitely not in a huge rush to get it. i'd actually want to make use of it and not have it collect dust.

There are so many games coming out this year that I'd rather just save up my money on those. Plus I already have a massive backlog to go through. The PlayStation 4 backwards compatibility is very tempting though. I might get one in a few years once there is a price drop or sale.

As far as I'm aware, it's only been confirmed that it'll be backwards compatible with PS4 games thus far...although if it was backwards compatible with earlier generations as well, I'd purchase one at launch probably! I'm hoping it'll support PS3 games as well, although I wouldn't hold my breath for earlier generations...but then, I have absolutely no idea how these things work technically, so for all I know having it support PS3 titles is just as difficult. xD

Sony's silence on the PS5 is pretty deafening at the moment...either they're still waiting to see if Microsoft will blink first with the Series X's price point, or they're frantically trying to work out how badly the coronavirus is going to impact manufacture of the console for their planned release day...whenever THAT is. It seems increasingly likely that we won't get the console this year (which I would personally be fine with - it gives me a chance to actually put some money aside for it) although this lack of news is disquieting...

I doubt I'll watch it...I made the mistake of watching the Deep Dive. I'll probably just read up on it on news sites - all I need to know is the price of the thing and a basic description of the games to decide whether I want to buy them or not, I don't need or want all the padding they'll add to the event itself.

It's been a long time coming, though. There has been a lot of negativity surrounding this console so far - and even if you consider rumours etc. unfounded, it doesn't change the tone of it - and Microsoft have set the bar pretty high with the marketing they've done so far for the Series X. This event is pretty damn important for Sony and I really hope they live up to expectations.

Yeah I think I'm actually busy when the show is on otherwise I'd definitely be watching it! I think this is a big chance for Sony, considering how Xbox messed up with their marketing for their recent showcase, and how a lot of upset fans were (myself included), I really think they can step ahead in the upcoming console war. Ghost of Tsushima is coming soon and that's a big plus for Sony too, so if they get us right Microsoft have to step up their game! Hoping they'll show the design (and I'm pretty sure they will), so should be an exciting time for PS fans!

We've got a new date for the postponed reveal!

Still have no plans to watch this but I will be keeping half an eye on the news sites that evening so I can catch the more interesting things - and hopefully find out the price of the damn console - as it comes in.
I don't think we will get a price during this taped reveal event, but hopefully they do at least show case the console. Price point will probably come out once MS gets ready to reveal the price of their console.

Possibly, although now would be a very good time for it if they're going to show off the console and some games, because that's only going to spark further price speculation. But Sony and Microsoft seem to waiting to see who blinks first when it comes to price.

All things considered, Microsoft will probably blink first. Although they've done a significantly better job at advertising their console thus far. Sony are in a stronger position coming in from this generation, but that doesn't mean they can't make the same mistakes they made with the PS3. I'm not sure waiting for Microsoft will do them much good, especially if the Lockhart exists. I feel like now would be a good time for a price point, but you're probably right that we won't get one just yet unfortunately...
