£450 is better than I expected it to be - it was my self-imposed price ceiling, actually! - but oh my lord the preorder situation is the worst I have ever seen in video gaming. It goes beyond even Nintendo's amiibo fiasco. Sony denying that they've cut production down on the console bears absolutely no credibility whatsoever when literally everywhere is sold out, and their communication about when consoles were going to be available is disastrous. They definitely could have handled this better.
They have also lost ALL goodwill from me with the console price thanks to the price of some of the games. £70?! That's absolutely disgusting. There has been a lot of buzz surrounding video game pricing for next gen but that's an abhorrent price hike and I sincerely hope their sales plummet as they bloody well should. There is no justification for that kind of pricing. There is no way that is going to be sustainable moving forward. It feels like a marketing move so that when they lower the price to £65 or £60 it'll feel like good value, but if they seriously think upping the price by that sort of level is acceptable...well. This alongside Microsoft who are offering all of the first party titles as a part of Game Pass, which Sony don't think is "sustainable" purely because they're a bunch of greedy bastards? Yeah. Definitely not consumer-friendly or particularly good value.
Realistically speaking I can't see this dick move impacting Sony too much, because people tend to stick with what they've got and Sony have made up a lot of goodwill with the PS4. But they're going to squander a lot of it with the PS5 if they do things like this. What is it with Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo resting on their laurels when they do a good job? Just because you get something right doesn't mean you should fuck everything else up!
Don't get me wrong, I'm going to get a PS5 - I kinda need to, because my PS4 sounds like it's about to explode - and I enjoyed the presentation. I'm interested in some of the upcoming games, and VERY interested in God of War: Ragnarok. But am I willing to pay £70 for video games? No, I am not. Am I impressed by Sony's lackadaisical attitude to the PS5 in general? No, I am not. Overall, I am more than a little peeved.
