Remember, friends don't let friends use Comic Sans (Fonts you can't stand)

Everyone has certain fonts they like, and others they despise. With fonts that are despised, it's often because they are used in situations where such use is inappropriate.

Let's talk about those fonts people really don't like. You can also discuss fonts that you actually like that are widely criticized.

One of my least favorite fonts of all time is Arial. I hate that it's so overused, and that it doesn't quite have the professional look and feel of Helvetica (which I have used in many documents).

Another overused font in certain situations is Papyrus. It's fine to use in logos and other forms of graphic design, but is absolutely ridiculous to use in letters and other documents where legibility is critical.

As for fonts that I'm in the minority for liking, Souvenir tops the list. It's been ridiculed as being the Comic Sans of the 1970s due to it being used everywhere in the 70s, 80s, and early 1990s. (I used to have some special education pamphets that were set in Souvenir). The overuse of said font led to the widely-quoted "remember, friends don't let friends set Souvenir" phrase.

I'm not really up on the whole font situation but anything super cursivey really boils my britches. cursive is a dead language so don't give me any of that hieroglyphic nonsense, I honestly cannot read it

There's this font called like something cowboys that every tattoo parlour here uses and it's so irritating.

I kind of like Berkshire Swash really, idk why though

I fucking hate this font though idk why anyone thought that a font with the bottom half of the letters erased was a good idea, it doesn't look good or anything. And it's small to boot, making it even harder to read and I had to increase the size

    can anyone even read this

I agree with the Papyrus and Comic Sans hate. I used to really hate Times New Roman as a kid but it's really grown on me recently, strangely enough.

Personal pet peeve to see the goddamn Bebas/Bebas Neue font in 75% of design interims and presentations at uni - even though I used to use it a lot myself. It's definitely not bad, just overused.

Comic Sans, Papyrus and Comic Sans Papyrus are the obvious nails to the chalkboard.
Trajan and Bank Gothic, Curlz, Birth of a Hero, Jokerman, Kirsten ITC, Hobo, brush script, scripting and french script just to name a few. Times New Roman and Courier aren't terrible but there are a million and one other serif fonts that are better to use.

Designer feels right now I could go on and on about typography.

I'm not particularly annoyed by any font, but my friend HATES Comic Sans to death. Whenever anyone uses Comic Sans, he complains a lot.

Any overly fancy font is one I don't like. Not even one that's just a cursive font, those can look really good if done right, but ones even more stylized than that. And italicized. To the point of almost being unreadable. I can't think of a specific example right now, but yeah. Don't like 'em much.

Strangely enough, I don't mind Comic Sans and other "overused" fonts. Although Impact I've always thought is ugly, will never use that one unless I have to.

As a designer, fonts are a subject that I have a lot of opinions about. And I agree with most of the sentiments here. Times New Roman, Arial, Comic Sans, Papyrus, Curlz, and Girls Are Weird are ones generally to be avoided. Although they are unique and well-made (which is why they became popular to begin with), they are overused and should be reserved for very specific situations only. Even then, because these fonts are so over used plenty of better alternatives have been created to replace them.

I'm also weary of free fonts. Many of them have glitches and problems with spacing, or the letters themselves just aren't drawn well. The phrase "you get what you pay for" is usually true with fonts.

Generally though, I don't hate many fonts; most of them are not inherently bad. The problem is usually the designer making not-great decisions.

    ...oh, that's weird

This whole time I thought that someone was trying to be cute and made some dumb font, but it's actually not supposed to show up like that? Why would my browser do that though =(

You may not have the font downloaded to your computer. Depending on who made your computer, some fonts may not come pre-installed and won't display correctly.

My least favorite is probably Times New Roman. First of all it doesn't look that good at all, there's way better varieties out there. Second, whenever I'd see this font it usually meant that I messed something up in my coding so that it couldn't load my CSS. Brr, dreading.

Other than that, probably MS Sans Serif. I'm not sure why it's even named sans serif, because that usually feels pretty redundant. I'm used to seeing this font a lot when I was a small child, as my dad used it on MSN. Seeing this font now, it nearly disgusts me. It's a bad font and I can't understand why I ever liked it.

Other honorable mentions: Century Gothic, Impact, Raleway

I must say I love OP for favoring Helvetica, Helvetica and Swansea are definitely my most favorite professional fonts, although I usually have strong feelings towards Open Sans. If only Open Sans was a bit more unique.

    Anything serif. Fucking shit.

Arial Unicode MS is the only font worthy of my documents. Pure function.

Find and increase the line spacing setting, I guess.
