[Event] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

Alright, that should be everyone's PMs sent out. Let me know if you didn't receive one, and I can resend it.

Just realized I wrote scarlet when I meant violet oops
Your scrambler has been informed, but your team had no version-exclusives in the first place so there isn't a need to change it.

I've received Eleanor's team, and will have the full post with everyone's teams ready in half an hour or so. She sent the last team to me at a bit of a busy time, haha.

@Arcaneum @Celèste1 @Cyddeon @Devalue @DragonEye @Eleanor @Janp @Kyatra @MachoPony @Reginald Cosmic @saniachan
The Secret Delibird Delivery Service has arrived, with a team of new Pokemon for each and every trainer!

[PokeCommunity.com] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

Arcaneum (Black 2): First off, by alphabetical order, we have your team delivered to you by Secret Delibird, Exploud, Luxray, Lunatone, Escavalier, Blastoise, and Breloom. Four of these Pokemon can only be obtained by hacking in Black 2, while Escavalier and Lunatone can be caught at Route 6 and Route 13, respectively. Very few shared weaknesses here at all, as only Fire and Grass have even two weaknesses in this team! On the other hand, not much is consistently resisted, with only Steel being resisted by three Pokemon on this team.

Celèste1 (Platinum): You've received an Empoleon, Blissey, Gliscor, Kricketune, Electivire, and Roserade, and will be playing Pokemon Platinum! Your Secret Delibird said they picked them because of your posts here: Empoleon because you like using your starter, Blissey because you aspire to be a Nurse, Gliscor because you like using regional birds (your Secret Delibird insists that it's "worth the title of the regional bird"), Krickitune because it's an artist and you like to write and draw, Electivire because you're German and it has the colors of the German flag, and finally Roserade because it's a flower Pokemon.

Cyddeon (Emerald Seaglass): Your Secret Delibird has selected Emerald Seaglass as your romhack, and given you a team of Arcanine, Yanmega, Breloom, Alakazam, Gengar, and Feraligatr. I've never played Emerald Seaglass, and don't know what changes it made to these Pokemon, but they're all solid options in the vanilla games. I'm certain they'll serve you well. And they'll perform excellently against Grass-type Pokemon in particular.

Devalue (FireRed): Your Secret Delibird has given you a team of Blastoise, Flygon, Ninetales, Pidgeot, Bellossom, and Kangaskhan. You have strong hacked-in team right off the bat, with Blastoise, Flygon, and Ninetales immediately gifted or hackable, thanks to the latter being unavailable in FireRed, a Pidgeot as soon as you get your first Poke Balls, and a Bellossom once you get to Route 5, though you will have to hack in a Sun Stone for it. The only Pokemon you'll need to wait a while to catch is Kangaskhan in the Safari Zone. Your team will be very similar to your rival's in the end, with a Grass/Fire/Water trio, a strong Ground-type, and even a Pidgeot of your own; though your physically-strong Kangaskhan is certainly different from his specially-strong Alakazam.

DragonEye (Violet): For your trip to Paldea, your Secret Delibird has given you a Flapple, Hypno, Masquerain, Toxapex, Pinchurchin, and Grimmsnarl. Three Galarian Pokemon... perhaps your Secret Delibird likes that region? The team also has no type overlap, with very few shared weaknesses. Whatever the case, this team will be able to inflict all the status conditions you asked for, and then some, and it'll be excellent against Fighting-types, which are resisted by half your team and don't inflict super-effective damage against any of your Pokemon.

Eleanor (Platinum): Your Secret Delibird sent an Empoleon, Yanmega, Gallade, Rhyperior, Houndoom, and Rotom to you, and you'll be playing Platinum. This team has very good defensive coverage; every type is resisted by at least one Pokemon, every type but Water and Dragon is resisted by at least two, and seven types are resisted by half your team! You do have to keep a close eye on Fighting and Ground-types though, since Empoleon, Rhyperior, and Houndoom are all weak to both types. No Rotom form was specified, so feel free to pick whichever one you want if you have access to the Secret Key! However, most of your Pokemon aren't accessible until the midgame. You'll need to fight Gardenia with just your Starter to unlock the Old Chateau and Rotom, while Ralts is just before Hearthome, and the other three are in-between the Veilstone and Pastoria gyms.

Explorer of Time (Black 1): My own Secret Delibird has given me a team of Porygon-Z, Staraptor, Sawsbuck, Starmie, Gliscor, and Blaziken. It looks like my type specialty this challenge is going to be Normal, with three Normal-types in the party, and I'll also have three Pokemon based off birds, though Porygon-Z and Blaziken happen to be flightless. Everything save Sawsbuck will need to be hacked in, including Porygon's Up-Grade and Gliscor's Razor Fang, giving me a strong team from the very beginning! I'll need to take care when fighting Ice-types, since Staraptor and Sawsbuck are weak to it, and Gliscor quadruply-weak. My game is Pokemon Black, with a very minor personal QoL romhack to make trade evolutions possible and HMs forgettable, and I'll have to defeat my own favorite legendary, Zekrom, to win!

Janp (Sapphire): You're heading to Sapphire's Hoenn, and your Secret Delibird has selected a Sceptile, Gyarados, Aggron, Altaria, Flygon, and Armaldo for you. Two of these Pokemon are Dragon-types, two more are in the Dragon egg group. Aggron and Armaldo might not fit the theme, but they're both used in the team of Hoenn's champion, Steven, and can propel you to the championship as well! Your team is very defensively balanced, but you still need to look out for Rock and Ice-types! Three Pokemon in your team are weak to both types, and you have two quadruple weaknesses to Ice. Thankfully, you have an Aggron to resist both types.

Kyatra (Emerald): Your Secret Delibird has picked Pokemon Emerald for you, and you'll be bringing a team of Sceptile, Shiftry, Illumise, Machamp, Claydol, and Walrein to the league to defeat Wallace. With the exception of Machamp, all of these were newly-introduced in Hoenn, and your Secret Delibird mentioned that they had a lot of fun using Illumise in particular. Keep an eye out for Fire, Ice, Bug, and especially Flying-types; half your team is weak to the first three with only a single resistance, while four team members are weak to the fourth without any resistances at all!

MachoPony (Platinum): You asked for an aggressive team, and your Secret Delibird certainly delivered! With a Gyarados, Machamp, Togekiss, Scizor, Porygon-Z, and Lucario, every single one of your Pokemon has an attacking base stat of 115 or higher. What's more, you can find five team members before Platinum's third gym! Unfortunately, your team's defensive stats are mediocre at best, though at least you don't have many type weaknesses; none of your Pokemon are weak to more than three types.

Reginald Cosmic (Emerald): You'll be playing Emerald rather than Ruby or Sapphire, and your Secret Delibird has given you a Gardevoir, Mightyena, Ludicolo, Golem, Salamence, and Gyarados! With half your team obtainable before the first badge, you'll have an early game powerhouse team, which will only improve once you pick up two more team members shortly after arriving in Dewford Town! However, Salamence will take a long time to get, needing the eighth badge from Juan to get it from Meteor Falls. Your team doesn't have a lot of weaknesses, or resistances, but you will need to be careful around Bug-types, especially in the early game. All your Pokemon catchable before arriving in Dewford are weak to Bug, but thankfully it's a weak type in Gen 3 and no boss battle specializes in the type in Hoenn.

Saniachan (Y): Finally, your Secret Delibird has given you a team made almost entirely of Kalos Pokemon, gifting you Dedenne, Barbaracle, Dragalge, Drifblim, Malamar, and Diggersby! You will also play a Kalos game, Pokemon Y. Be careful when fighting Ice or Ground-type Pokemon, since half your team is weak to these two types. Can you beat Diantha without the power of Mega Evolution?

It looks like we have a lot of variety here. The only Pokemon to end up on three different teams was Gyarados, which is on Janp's, MachoPony's, and Reginald Cosmic's teams. Sceptile, Flygon, Porygon-Z, Gliscor, Blastoise, Empoleon, Yanmega, Machamp, and Breloom ended up in two different teams. Every other Pokemon is unique, which means that there's a total of 61 different unique Pokemon this challenge.

...I was really expecting someone to pick a monotype team for someone else, considering how popular that challenge is. There isn't much type specialization here. I think only my own team has three Pokemon of a single type, and that type's Normal of all things.

EDIT: Not that I'm complaining. I like this team.

Ha, okay, I can work with this! I'm gonna go ahead and start grinding for that Ralts tonight. [Dangles a chicken tender, with a note that says "Brain Food" on it, from a string] Here, Raltsy, Raltsy, Raltsy! Come to Reggie!

Welp, I did my research and found that the earliest I can get four of my mons is at Route 8. This means I'll need to solo Viola with my Bunnelby. Okay, *cracks knuckles* I got this.

Also, I forgot to say that my naming theme this time is Fire Emblem avatar characters:
  1. Kris
  2. Robin
  3. Corrin
  4. Byleth
  5. Shez
  6. Alear
My Bunnelby/Diggersby will be Kris and my Dedenne will be Alear. Not sure about the other four, though -- I'll probably name them in the capture order.

[PokeCommunity.com] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

"Jake shows you how it's done, for 25 minutes in HD"

WHOOOOOOOO! [Takes off my shirt and waves it around and does doughnuts with the golf kart, Muscle Man Regular Show style]

All right, time to do a little training on Ralts while I catch Poochyena and Lotad.

Not sure about the other four, though -- I'll probably name them in the capture order.
Suggestions:

Robin could be Dragalge, for reasons that would spoil Awakening for new players.
Spoiler:

Byleth could be Malamar. Byleth is a teacher and Malamar is a very intelligent Pokemon.

Corrin could be Drifblim. Drifloon, Drifblim's pre-evo, is known for attempting to kidnap children in its Pokedex entries, and Corrin, as a child, was kidnapped from Hoshido to be raised in Nohr.

We also had a forum user who used Corrin as a screen-name, but she died recently, and it would be a nice thought to bring a Ghost-type named after her through Kalos in her honor.

That leaves Shez as Barbaracle. Not really sure if that fits anything since I know nothing about them.

Excuse me, @Explorer of Time ? Is it okay to get Ralts to Level 6 before shoving Mudkip into the PC? For the record, I've only done one trainer battle, and that was Rival May. I already did a very small amount of grinding (Ralts is still level 4 ... for some reason). I think having one Level 5 party member before abandoning the starter sounds more than fair, but uhh... [Looks at Ralt's Gen 3 learnset] I think Level 6 would be a little nicer...

EDIT: In any case, I've caught a Poochyena named Shu (because classic Dragon Ball) and a Lotad named Yamcha.

Some of you are probably scratching your heads about the name Yamcha. Very early Dragon Ball was very loosely based on Journey to the West which is where Son Goku gets his name from (Son Goku is the Japanese name for Sun Wukong aka "Monkey King"). Yamcha is the Japanese equivalent of Sha Wujing from Journey to the West, and in Japan, Sha Wujing is typically portrayed as a Kappa. Lotad, Lombre, and Ludicolo are obviously based on Kappa, so it seems like a pretty close fit.

Normally, I'd say it's fine to grind until you have an attacking move before you formally start your challenge, but since you already have Poochyena and Lotad, I would use them to grind up Ralts instead.

Update 1: Brock
Level limit for Brock: 14.

Game: Fire Red
The team: :blastoise::flygon::ninetales::pidgeot::bellossom::kangaskhan:

A pretty balanced team. Used Blastoise, Ninetales, and Bellossom in some game or another. Definitely wants them to take on a rough gym leader, if possible. Might be tough to do so without any boosting moves, save Swords Dance on Bellossom (which would be late and questionable). Could get Double Team for someone. Overestimated how many Pokemon get things like Swords Dance and other buffing moves in the older generations.

Likes seeing Flygon on the team. Never really gets the chance to use it. Wishes it evolved sooner. Means some time with Vibrava, then.

Might not get much mileage out of Pidgeot. Values Feather Dance less without a buffing move to pair it with. Will have to find something dumb for it to beat up to give it a chance.

Never used Kangaskhan outside of the Mega. Always seemed good, but outclassed by Tauros (by virtue of Intimidate). Looks pretty bulky. Ought to be pretty capable.

Randomed into the female trainer. Named them "Delbird" (due to the seven character limit). Chose "Grinch" for the rival.

Picked Squirtle for the starter, obviously. Named it "Cupid", after one of Santa's reindeer.

Caught four Pidgeys on Route 1. Gamed it a little more than normal. Eyed the damage taken and given before catching.

(HP/Atk/Def/SpAtk/SpDef/Speed). Keen Eye and level 3 for all four.
Pidgey 1: 15/8/8/7/8/9. Bashful.
Pidgey 2: 16/7/8/7/7/8. Modest.
Pidgey 3: 16/8/8/6/7/8. Jolly.
Pidgey 4: 16/8/8/7/7/8. Adamant.

Picked Pidgey #4. Named it "Dasher".

Added in all the other party members except Oddish and Kangaskhan. Will get those soon enough. Selects the best of three randomly generated Pokemon.

Trapinch 1: Bold nature. Arena Trap. IVs: 14/29/27/28/25/15. Hidden Power Grass (38)
Trapinch 2: Bold nature (again). Hyper Cutter. IVs: 20/5/5/11/13/15. Hidden Power Dragon (45).
Trapinch 3: Lax nature. Hyper Cutter. IVs: 18/14/28/14/23/19. Hidden Power Water (67).

#3 for the better ability, decent IVs, and indifferent nature.

Vulpix 1: Relaxed nature. IVs: 24/7/26/14/27/1. Hidden Power Grass (64).
Vulpix 2: Naive nature. IVs: 12/18/25/18/21/18. Hidden Power Fire (46).
Vulpix 3: Naughty nature. IVs: 12/25/21/5/17/8. Hidden Power Psychic (30).

#2. Named it Vixen.

Glanced down Cupid's (Squirtle) and Dasher's (Pidgey) stats while here. Decent stats for Cupid (higher IVs in the more important stats, lower in the less important ones) and really good for Dasher (one IV below 20 and a 31 in Special Attack). Remarks on the Jolly Pidgey being phenomenal too, with an IV total of 153.

Forgot how high level the Grinch's Pokemon were (two level 9's versus three level 6's + one level 7). Walked away without anyone fainting and no items used.

Reports nothing exciting on the way to Brock. Leveled everyone to 12. Takes too long to go all the way to 14 with wild Pokemon experience and no Running Shoes yet.

The plan: Send Vixen in. Believes it in for Geodude (no Rock moves). Re-evaluates the situation when Onix shows up. Beat this with Charmander before for the event, but with Growl on-hand. Places zero faith in Vixen's defenses. Has not forgotten all the deaths to Hala with solo Alolan Vulpix.

Started bad for Vixen. Looks like a...6-shot for Ember? (Not surprising.) Fell from full to 19/32 on a critical Tackle on turn 2.

Traded blows for a bit. Came down to Geodude in the red versus Vixen at 7 hitpoints. Would be iffy if Ember killed. Dealt 6 damage on each of the previous two Tackles. Might Defense Curl instead of Tackling. Could heal Vixen. Would be safer. Wanted the glory of no items. Went for it.
[PokeCommunity.com] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)
As according to plan.

Switched to Rudolph for Onix. Ate the Rock Tomb easy. Buried Onix in Sand Attacks. Sent in Dasher. Tried a Gust. Hit for maybe 1 damage on Onix. Took a Bind and...wait. Bind? (Looking at Bulbapedia) Oh. Had Bide in Red/Blue, but Bind in Fire Red.

Gave up on Dasher. Would have gotten demolished by Rock Tomb and/or bad luck sooner or later. Returned to Rudolph to Bite it (which is Special). Chewed through it in four hits or so? Came kind of close to fainting (4/35) because of Onix getting lucky on Tackles. Emerged from the battle with no items used and no faints.

[PokeCommunity.com] Secret Delibird Challenge (Complete)

Quick question, could I trade one of my pokemon from an NPC? One of the mons I have is to get is a Seedot and theres a trade in Rustboro I can get from even though I can get it early from route 102 but its 1%
You can do the in-game trade, just remember that traded Pokemon can disobey if you don't have enough badges. For your game, that means that it can disobey up until you beat Brawly, and might also disobey you if you overlevel above 30 for Flannery, which is more likely since traded Pokemon get an EXP bonus. You can do it, but if you're relying on Seedot or Nuzleaf to beat Brawly in the first place, I'd hold out for the 1% encounter rate.

Once you beat Flannery, you should be good to go, since it raises its level cap to 50, and Winona raises it further to 70, well ahead of the level curve. Beating Juan disables the disobedience mechanic altogether.
