[Approved] Small Writing Contest

Okay, so this year the judges for this contest are me, Bardothren, Astinus, and bobandbill. Pretty much the scoring and categories on what to look for in each story will be the same.

Each entry can have a maximum score of 30, with the points broken down into three categories equaling 10 points in total like in previous years. The categories are:

Spelling and Grammar
Characterization, Plot, and Description
Relevance to Prompt

Now, some things we need to discuss:

>How long the contest should last and how much time we should give ourselves to review
>The prompt

For the first concern, the dates for the Get Together September 16th through September 30th. So we want to like give ourselves a week for entries and then another week for judging?

As for the prompt, we can just brainstorm until all of us agree on one. I know last year's prompt was "nostalgia," so I would like to avoid using that again lol.

Edit: Oh, since this year's theme is Harry Potter theme houses, how about we try something a bit different from past contests? We can have the prompt be "fantasy", where the participants try to write a fantasy genre short.

When I was thinking this over in work, "magic" was going to be my suggestion as well. It's not as general as "fantasy" for a prompt, which will help with scoring. But it's also not too limited of a prompt.

I also prefer 'magic' over 'fantasy'. Let's go with that if we don't strike upon something better. :)

Yeah, we don't want to get too specific with the prompt. People shouldn't feel like they have to write a Harry Potter-ish fic just because the theme is Harry Potter. Also, not all the judges are fans of Harry Potter, so we don't want to have anything related to that in the stories. Otherwise, that would affect the judging.

It's better to have the prompt be as general as we can get it, just so people can write the story that they'd want without having to worry about something specific. And I'd think that adding something specific to the prompt might turn potential entries away just because it's specific.

Like Bay said though, I'm fine if there is something related to Harry Potter in the story (I do have a little knowledge about the series), but there shouldn't be a lot.

I'm also going to say that I'm fine with the one week for people to work on their entries. The first week that GT is running, I have something to do. The second week, though, is clear for me.

Ok, so I whipped up an intro page here. Pretty much copied it from last year's Get Together, mostly made changes concerning judging, prompt, and dates. If there's something else missing let me know. You guys ok with the 22nd as the deadline for entries, or 23rd better?

Small Writing Competition!
Judged by Bay Alexison, bobandbill, Astinus, and Bardothren.

[PokeCommunity.com] Small Writing Contest

Welcome everyone to the Small Writing Competition! Ready to write a story based on this year's prompt that will impress the four judges and the rest of PC? Great!

But first, a few rules to keep in mind.

Rules
1.) Follow PC's rules and Fanfiction and Writing's rules.
2.) The stories written for this competition must be completely new. In other words, they must not have been written before and not posted anywhere else until judging is over.
3.) You must PM your entries to all of the judges. (This is so if someone loses their PMs the others still have them and so forth). The judges in question are bobandbill, Bay Alexison, Bardothren and Astinus. You also must post in this thread when you send your PMs so we can confirm you did send us an entry.
4.) One entry per member only, sorry.
5.) You have until 11:59pm EDT, 22nd September to get your entry in.
6.) The story can be based on Pokemon or be original fiction. Note the judges may not all be familiar with any other fandoms.
7.) The entry can only be a completed one-shot as this is a small writing competition - no chaptered entries, please!
8.) Please don't publicly post your stories until the competition is over! Once the scores are posted and the competition is over, you may post your story in Fanfiction and Writing so that others may see it. Make sure to add [SWC] to your title if you do!

If you have any other questions, ask away!

The prompt is magic, so good luck with making use of that in your story!

Fancy CSS is fancy! 22nd seems fine, to allow some time for potential extensions if members want it.
6.) The story can be based on Pokemon or be original fiction (given the GT theme we would rather you go with a Pokemon theme though - it is about celebrating 20 years of Pokemon after all!). Note the judges may not all be familiar with any other fandoms.
This bit needs to be updated.
