For those of you who haven't watched the anime or read the manga, a Death Note is a book which, if you write the name of someone in it whilst picturing them in your head, will kill that person the way you specify.

My question to you, OVP, is this; if you had this power, would you use it? If you could kill any of the horrible criminals who destroy lives out there or just the people you don't like, would you do it? Assume that you can't be caught. There are no drawbacks to using the Note. If so, why, and if not, why not? Additionally, if you would, who would you use the Note on and how would they die, and would they do anything beforehand? You may specify what you want them to do. Not specifying a reason automatically results in a heart attack, for the sake of the thread.

    gogogo!

Yes I would use it, yes I'd judge criminals and scumbags that I think should die and I'd throw some politicians in there too because half of them are criminals.

edit: btw I would still use even if there were drawbacks, and if there was a chance of getting caught.

I... honestly don't think I would. Maybe it's a weird case of idealism setting in, but I don't think people should kill other people, no matter what the circumstances are. If I write someone's name in this Death Note thingy, it's essentially killing them, and I don't think I'd ever feel comfortable with myself, even if the individual concerned was a horrible person. So, nope. No killing for me, unfortunately.

You know, the good person in me says I wouldn't... But I know better. I would use it. However, before I used it, I would search the news for evil, horrible dictators who need to be...shall we say, irradicated... However, I think I would burn the book after I was done with it.

    This is morbid!

In seriousness though I'd like to say I'd never do it and that no one deserves to die. However.. I can't honestly say that. There are types of criminals who I would use it for, I wont go into detail about it but yeah, otherwise I'd never even consider using it on a person - I don't care what they've done to me I wouldn't have them die even if I had something of that caliber at my fingertips.

Of course, there would be the gut wrenching guilt that if I did this - Even on a disgusting criminal who's destroyed peoples lives and caused devastation - that I would also be causing devastation, you know, a lot of criminals families say they want nothing do with them anymore but if they found out this person had died they're going to be heartbroken, it's still their child and I don't think I could live with myself if I did it, because really, I'd be as bad as them.

Thats a contradiction! So I'll just answer it again! I GAVE BOTH SIDES OF THE ARGUMENT I AM SO CONFLICTED. Ahem. If I had a Death Note I don't know what I'd do really, I might use it, I might not. It's not something I can answer unless it happened.

I would absolutely use it, without hesitation. While I agree with some of the sentiments here that people shouldn't kill other people, I also believe in a sense of the greater good, and that the world is a better place for having lost some people.

Since there are no drawbacks to the Death Note, killing the people in question would not escalate any world conflicts because they'd have no idea that I caused their death. For safe measure, you could put in a death that looks unsuspicious, like an aneurysm or a heart attack and nobody would have any reason to attack in return.

I am cautious however, because I feel like I might get drunk with the power and turn it into playing God, deciding who lives and who dies. I've only been thinking about this for five minutes and already my mind has gone from killing vicious dictators like Saddam Hussein to killing people like Bill O'Reilly just for the harm they do to the world lol.

No. Even if there are 'no drawbacks' I would still feel horrible. I would end up taking lives. And according to my beliefs no one is truly good or evil, and well, I wouldn't bear toying with lives like that.

    Burn.

I'd use it because I want to punish those who do massive crimes. Of course, when I'm done doing that, I'd throw the book away because it's rather morbid.

I don't think I could. I have my faith. God knows who shouldn't and should be killed, and that's not something humans should do....

    I'd definitely use it lol, even though I don't know who to kill owo; I know this sounds weird but I quite enjoy visualizing ppl dying oAo;;

u don't need to watch anime to learn about death notes :/ if i did, id get rid of it. don't need to kill any1... yet

I had a Death Note before, although I lost it somewhere. What I used to write there before was those people that makes me feel miserable, like those who bullies me at school and yeah. I could remember writing a certain criminal (couldn't remember who it was, but what he did was really unforgivable and merciless) .. Writing on that notebook was a way of expressing my anger and stuff. I didn't take it seriously, but at least I could burst out what I'm feeling. :)

Yes I would use it, yes I'd judge criminals and scumbags that I think should die and I'd throw some politicians in there too because half of them are criminals.

This entire post (including the drawback comment) is what I'd do with it as well. Vigilante!

For those of you who haven't watched the anime or read the manga
    *or seen the live-action movie

Anyhoo. I can't look at someone and not see a human being who, despite their moral failings, has feelings and a desire to live. On a basic level that resonates with me. I understand what it means to want to live, to fulfill some dream, to find joy in life, or at least I understand that this is something common to people wherever and whoever they are.

That said, if I knew of someone doing something completely inhuman and callous and monstrous to another person I don't think I'd have the willpower to keep my anger in check. I know it would be best if I just destroyed a death-causing book as soon as I got it, but I habitually think that even bad things can have good uses some of time if used properly so I'd likely convince myself to keep the book around. And since I'd have the book and I'd be very angry I think there'd be a good chance I'd kill someone awful. I imagine it would spiral down from there and I'd loose perspective and start killing people for small things.

No drawbacks? No guilt or sleepless nights? No divine/man-made judgments/punishment for the killings? No horrified looks when someone finds out as well as no difference in his/her behaviour and attitude towards me thereafter? Does it have infinite pages so I can kill off every living being in the universe (and other universes we don't know of) if I want to?

If it truly has no drawbacks/deficiencies whatsoever, immediate or indirect, I would most likely go to some criminal syndicate worth working for, be hired as an assassin and make insane cash that way. I would choose unusual (so I would know for sure so-and-so died when it appear on the news), impossible-to-control-yet-natural-looking (natural as in not caused by someone else) kinds of death: spontaneous human combustion, hit by meteors/hailstones the size of watermelons, death by laughter... And also attempting to find out new ways to die (direct death by frowning, clapping, lust, pride...). I want to test if someone can die by holding his/her breath for too long.

I would probably go completely insane eventually and an hero. But until then, I guess I would get rid of the scumbags that overpopulate the world. Serial killers (not including me), child killers, rapists, corrupt politicians, you get what I mean.

Well, assuming I wouldn't get caught, I'd definitely use it. But I'd use it only on people who I deem worthy of the punishment of death. That would include some people who have personally wronged me egregiously. I'd think of some creative methods of death. If I'm going to have this power, I'm gonna have a little fun with it *evil smirk*

Of course, if I'm gonna have to match wits with some super bizarre and reclusive mega-genius, I think I'd have to pass...
