In the Hoenn games you can collect volcanic soot by walking through grass covered in the ash constantly being released by Mt. Chimney (I'm sure breathing that in is great for your health). You can hand over the ash to the guy on Route 113 who gives you the Soot Sack in the first place so he can make either Secret Base furniture or status-effect curing flutes (that look kind of like bongs). Anybody ever make use of this much?

I wanna say I did the first time or two I played Ruby/Sapphire decades ago. Never did much afterwards though.

I usually collect enough to get Blue Flute, which is a nice way to wake up Pokémon early in the game. Especially for me, since I keep forgetting to buy healing items. And it also adds a small flavour to my runs.

I remember getting all items on my 100% Alpha Sapphire save file and I used White Flute to attract wild encounters while shiny hunting.

Picked up a few flutes in the first playthrough. Knew how useful the PokeFlute was. Probably backburnered the more expensive flutes for another day, then never bothered to get them.

Ignored soot completely in repeat playthroughs. Somehow got the idea that they were one-use. Expects them to be not have a number next to them if they multiple-use.

I tend to want to squeeze as much from these games as I can when replaying them, so on repeat playthroughs I do take the time to get all the flutes either when I first make it to the route or during the postgame as a way to pass the time. The flutes themselves are a nice reward and in the original RSE and I do like the idea of modulating encounter rates with the White Flue and Black Flute without stopping them altogether by constantly using repels. In ORAS it seems these flutes were changed to increase or decrease the levels of the wild Pokemon, so I don't use them as much, but I still like to get them, as well as the ones that cure status effects, just to have a reliable, permanent way to do so.

I always get the Blue Flute when playing RSE because it essentially replaces the Awakenings for no in-game money (plus I can sell the Awakenings I find lying around/already in my inventory for items I do need, which speeds up the process of buying the beam TMs in RSE). In recent years, I usually get the yellow and red flutes too. Infatuation is rare, so I haven't had many situations where that's useful (though it could be nice in Flannery's gym since she uses Attract, but that's... really situational). However, the yellow flute has come in handy during some playthroughs over recent years. I'm a little hazy on the details, but I think it's possible to cure confusion with a Full Restore (not sure about Full Heals), but those are expensive, so I'm happy to use the yellow flute instead.

Most of the time I went for the three status removing flutes. It's just nice having a permanent item to heal Sleep, Confusion and Infatuation. Granted, two of those can be removed by switching out, but oh well.

I went for the special glass furniture in one of my first playthroughs. But it never felt worthwhile, tbh. ^^"
