"That's A Wrap! is a new series in the Daily Bloggity which gives my personal opinions and ratings on movies that I have either backlogged or never had the chance to watch until now. Be wary in reading the entries as they may contain spoilers if you don't want the movie ruined for you if you haven't seen it. It's not exactly a review of the movie, but rather just things I like and don't like it about the movie. This will be a random series that will occur on days at 5PM Eastern Time."
Back in the summer of '14, the movie drive in which I worked at hosted a "Lady's Night." What this meant was that for the entire night on both screens, they played chick flicks to draw in as many lasses as possible for a night of fun and relaxation. While I can't remember all of the movies that were being played that night - I do remember Grease was one of the four - one of the movies playing that night was Dirty Dancing, a 1987 classic directed by Emile Ardolino. I saw bits and pieces of it from the diner in which I worked at, but I never got a chance to see it all the way through. Alas, it was not my time.
Fastforward to a few weeks ago and I finally had a chance to see it. When I was hanging over my girlfriend's house one night I saw the movie propped up on her bookcase and decided that I would finally give that movie a shot. I understood well enough that it might not appeal to me, but I felt like it was just one of those movies that I needed to say I've seen. I actually have a history of dancing too - I took ballroom dance lessons for a few years - so I was actually pretty interested to see what the movie had in store.
That being said, I digress to say I was a tad disappointed with the actual movie. It was more of a romance thing than actual dancing, which put me in a damper mood. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for romance movies; if you want to have two people snogging with each other, have at it. I just wish there was a healthy balance between the amount of dancing that was in the movie and and the romantic interest plot line. When I saw the name "Dirty Dancing," I assumed that it was going to be about a girl learning how to dance in a lack of better words slutty way compared to her peers, and at the beginning it seemed like it was going to shape up that way. They had one scene where they showed the staff grinding with one another, but that was the only "dirty dancing" I actually saw. I suppose the title of the movie was more just a reference between the fact that it was "dirty"that Jennifer Grey was messing around with Patrick Swayze.
Nonetheless, the dance numbers in the movie were still pretty good. I have a lot of respect for people who can coordinate dance numbers and actually pull them off, as it takes a lot of practice, hard work, and dedication to execute it properly. Still, I can't get over the fact that it didn't play out as the Grease I thought it was going to be like, and how at the end I felt like I was bamboozled.
Final Rating: 6/10
