Venomoth was planned to be Metapod's evolution. Butterfree has way more resemblance to Venonat than Caterpie. Just compare them: same eyes, same antennae, same hands, same color.

Mm that would have been very sensible haha, I wonder why they changed it? I guess they needed a caterpillar to evolve into a butterfly and ran out of time? :p

I read more than 1 theory/explanation... Some say the sprites were switch in the first games. Other people say it was because of the anime they wanted butterfree instead of venomoth because it looked more appealing to kids but they wanted to have 2 evolutions instead of 1. Pokemon never explained why, I think they are never going to explain it ^-^..

Those sprites you just posted, are they how the Pokémon look in the original games or just 'concept art'?

Good, because Butterfree is awesome

There are other weird relations between Pokemon species. It's so interesting to look through them all. One of my other favorites is the relationship between Gengar and Clefable, that Gengar is the "shadow" version of Clefable.

Poor Metapod all alone as the only discarded Pokémon haha.

The Gengar/Clefable relationship was always really creepy, they do look incredibly similar in outlines and the stories I've heard about them are pretty convincing. The only thing I'd say against it is that they're both pretty standard 'pointy blob' shapes and the artists may well have just gotten lazy towards that end of the Pokédex, but it is far too big a coincidence to rule out.

And don't forget the Magikarp/Dratini idea, that Dratini and Dragonair were originally supposed to be Gyarados, and Magikarp into Dragonite. This is disproved by the theory that Magikarp was based off a Chibese fish that, if it managed to jump up a Waterfall, would transform into a Dragon!

Now that one I hadn't heard before, where was the logic for it? :o Just that Dratini/Dragonair look similar to Dragonite, or? XD

It'll be interesting to see if Kakuna falls under the same fate. Those cocoon Pokemon are just so difficult for me to like or find interesting.

And I am so tired of the Kangaskhan/Cubone theory. Especially since Mega Kangaskhan kind of helped disprove it.

I agree about cocoon Pokemon, but Swadloon is actually really cute and likeable. Spewpa looks kinda odd but still looks better than the others, and Kakuna'a original sprite was better than now.


Did I really write speeps instead of spewpa XD

Haha yeah but the only chance I got to use it my SEWADDLE DIED AT LEVEL 12 IN A NUZLOCKE TO S FLIPPING DUNSPARCE.

On a lighter note, who wants to go and show their support on the PokeCommunity Hack- Off Team hacks? Team 1 is getting lazy we need inspiration ha we already got an alpha up for curious players! :D
