There has been massive debated to whether or not the Burqa - which is a piece of clothing muslim women wear - should be banned in certain countries. There are many reasons why many people belive this should be so: Some say that it is quite scary for people not wearing the Burqa to not know/see the person's face. Who knows, someoe dressed in a Burqa for non-religous purposes can rob or abuse someone and the victim won't be able to identify the culprit. There are many situations that influence people's decisions to whether or not it should be banned.

So my question here to you all is: Should the Burqa really be banned? Why, what situations can wearing a Burqa be wrong or 'unhelpful?'

Have you read the STICKY thread explaining Religeous and Sexual thread rules?
Otherwise, yes, if a muslim woman robs a bank with a burka on, how do the police identify her?

    These threads are now allowed.

And if you find me one news story where a Muslim woman robbed a bank wearing a burqa I'll concede this point.

    Hell no.

That's just like asking to ban the wearing of a Christian cross, or anything else a part of someone's culture or religion.
They did. At least in the schools. (In France anyway, which I believe is the country that's doing this. I don't remember exactly. lol)

In my country, torturing bulls just to kill them later is a "tradition". One of our regions just banned it and I'm really glad.

It's a tradition and part of their culture, yeah... but it's also the closest thing to being in jail: other people can't see you, you can barely see a small part of the world ahead through a lattice, etc.

I think the biggest part of all is education: nowhere in the Quran it's said that women must be treated like that. Probably banning it won't really be asuccess, but it's much better than leaving it be, honestly.

In my opinion, it should be banned. It's oppression to women. I don't care what anyone says, it's terrible. Let's just cover our women up...wtf? I'm pretty open to other cultures and traditions. Even the standard hijab is okay...like whatever, but the burqa is honestly just going too far. It's not right. Why aren't the men covered up like that? It's inequality at its finest. Terrible. BAN! I can't imagine wearing it for 10 minutes let alone forever. The stuff that happens to women in the world, disgraceful. It's 2010 people, wake up.

I don't think they should ban it, just leave it up to the individual women to say whether they want to wear it or not. I think that making women or anyone else wear or do something because of a religion isn't okay but if that person chooses to wear or do the traditional thing so be it, as long as it's not forced upon them.

All ism's have there facepalm moments be it thinking a man to be the son of god or that coming back to life Jesus would then not have the urge to eat brains or another man can part the oceans on command or that women need to be covered at all times or someone saying "I hate god, so I became an atheist" or
"I think we as atheists can celebrate [Christmas] in a non-religious way".

I am an atheist myself but still look at the scriptures sometimes, be from whatever reigion, as a way of guidance as I think they were intended I just hope one day soon we can learn to stop the hate. Anyway that's my ramblings on it anyway.

The burqa isn't a part of Islam, it's more of a cultural thing belonging to some countries that just happen to consist of a mainly Muslim population. A lot of people are also typically very oppressive and pushy about forcing their "beliefs" on people, and if other people abroad don't accept their oppression it they just use the racist card to try and get out of it.

    This.

I'm also pretty sure if you go to their country, then they force women to wear a burqa regardless of religion or nationality. Fair enough, you're in their country so you should adjust to fit their culture. But they can't have a double standard and expect to totally disregard the culture of other countries when they're abroad.

"You have to follow our culture in our country, when we're in your country, we still follow our culture and don't care about yours."

Not by a woman, but the burqa is still used by criminals.

If you say that to one of the many religious women wearing the burqa that will take that as an offensive to their beliefs.

I can see both sides of the argument, but I am leaning towards yes it should be. It doesn't fall under religious toleration because a religion does not mandate a women to wear it. A culture's mind-set does, a mind-set that does not stem from their religion. So this issue is more about women wearing something discriminating from a certain culture, not a certain religion.

I mean, the only reason women really wear it in the middle east is out of fear of retaliation. Most muslim women who move out of the middle east to the U.S. or France, or anywhere else, usually don't wear it at all. Some still do.

But I think if it's the woman's choice to wear it, and not someone just forcing her to, then she should be able to.

This is a very confusing political and social issue.

lrn2google. I'm actually surprised you didn't know of this earlier actually, not to mention terrorists using burqas to disguise and hide themselves.

In any case, I'm very opposed to the burqa, and the sooner it's banned, the better. Furthermore, this will only increase public awareness of Islam and its teachings, practices and law.

What's funniest about the whole issue is that feminists in general seem to oppose banning the burqa, the idiots XD.

A woman wearing a Burqa isn't part of the religion, but more a taking of the culture and the social beliefs upon those within the religion. I've never liked the idea of anything being forced upon a person; especially the force of a woman wearing a Burqa, when it is not dignified by the religion itself.

Should it be banned? No. What would be the reason for banning it? It's part of a culture, and while some may not like it, I don't think it should be up to them, but the person under the piece of clothing instead. And by far, it's not the worst case in a culture compared to others who do things far worse. :\

What irks me the most is that some believe (those within this culture) that even when out of their country, that it should be still forced upon a woman's body. You're not within your country anymore, then you shouldn't have to force your beliefs onto someone who may or may not wish to do so. While I know woman who stick with their culture wear the Burqa in respect and honor to their beliefs, I think those who wish not to wear it, shouldn't be forced to because it's "culture" or "religion."

That's like saying you have to have the Bible if you want to pray to God. Or that you have to go to Church, when honestly, you don't need the Bible or a church to believe or pray to God.

I personally don't like the burka, but I accept that you have to respect their personal freedoms to a certain degree. If the woman wearing the burka wants to be a tewacher, however, then no way. Especially if you're teaching younger children, with whom it can be a lot easier to communicate via facial expressions.

I thought the Burqa was for the fact the most skin you show, the ****tier you seem to be. I thought coming to countries where you wouldn't be dragged through the street by your ankles for showing arms would make one delighted and actually wear a T-shirt for once in their lives without a man coming at them.

But anyways, as much as they look like assassins, I wouldn't ask anyone to do something they didn't want to do. It would be kinda like banning sunglasses if they had some kind of religious/cultural meaning and didn't block the suns rays.

    I agree with this ^

On another note, if the Burqa is banned, in order to achieve the truly Secular state France (who just banned it I think) wants, then the other religious denominations should be placed under the same restrictions.

I agree here as well. The law shouldn't force women to wear it, it should be a personal choice.

I'll admit I don't like the burqa for the obvious reasons. But in prinicple I also don't like the idea of telling people what to do and minorities being forced to adapt to whatever the majority say.

To me this should be a really small issue, like when stores have signs that say "No shirt, no shoes, no service." No one is saying these extremely oppressed women have to uncover their hair or legs or anything, just their faces. And it's not like many women wear a burqa in western countries anyway. If I recall, France wanted to ban it even though they estimated that only 150 women actually wore it in the entire country. Kind of ridiculous.

This is one of those issues where I can see both sides and I just can't take a firm stand for one or another.

I think they are banning them because they think that they are probably selling "terrorist" gospel there.

But they are like ninjas, if you tell not to, it offends them, because they are used to doing, and then they get pissed off....
    but....

They learn places before they go to it, unless .... this plce didn't say you couldn't wear that there, which they learned, and then they scared that place one by one, because these countries are still afraid of the tero ror ists that broke the towers, and the whole story just trickled down because not everyone saw the war live.

God gave you hair, why should you hide it? I think they should be... oh, but you can't force people to do stuff that' against their will... but for the interest of the public - and their safety? - I hate sitting on the fence. Well, maybe not banned, but not encouraged either.

God gave you hair, why should you hide it?

That has nothing to do with the discussion at hand.

And a lot of valid points made, but I still stand by my statement. If the woman wants to wear something that is significant in their culture/religion she shouldn't be made to remove it.
