Fast paced action, extreme linearity, realistic settings, and strangely enough sandbox elements as well. I'd say crappy storylines as well, but honestly, storylines in JRPGs have been declining for a while.
Let's take Final Fantasy XIII. The battles are thrilling and the paths are extremely narrow for most of the game but then it dumps you on this huge open field with missions that you can achieve, which iirc does nothing for the main game. Now, fast paced action is a good thing, but it's hard to make it good in JRPGs. The only way FFXIII could be trying to copy WRPGs more is if they had space marines.
I play JRPGs so I can see unique environments and character development, not 40 year old space marines that fight against aliens in gray bleak environments.(Yes, I know I'm generalizing, but this is what seems to be the case right now.)
