It all depends on the person.

I'd personally disable mine if n00bs kept VMing me with spam and nonsense. But I don't get that so I leave my VMs open to everyone~

Noooo, not when you have a lot of VMs and you're customizing your profile and want to see what it looks beyond just the preview, but don't want to miss any VMs you may have gotten when replying back to them all later. ;;

The only time I really disable VMs is when I'm customizing my profile, which I agree can come in handy when you recieve loads of VMs, and if I go on a DLOA.
Those are basically the only reasons I will disable VMs though.
