Well florida doesnt have cold water, only thing to avoid is little sharks and red tide, lol. Seriously though, i'm pretty good at it, I love to surf.

And Xairmo, why I watch it is because, well it's sweet to see new moves I guess. ;D

The difference between Yuko Goto and Stephanie Sheh is that Stephanie Sheh doesn't make me want to deafen myself when she speaks. Really, do you pay attention to the actual Japanese voices? Some of the stuff female seiyuu do, especially when voicing "cute" characters, should be considered a form of torture.

So, you would rather trust a bunch of high-schoolers and college students with only a minimal education in the Japanese language over actual college graduates and native speakers when it comes to translating anime? Also, 4Kids is obviously not representative of the industry as a whole. Stop stealing from Tite Kubo and start buying the DVDs from Viz Media.

Both of you just need to relax and watch the brightly-colored cartoons already.
 
I usually prefer dubs because--like the first commenter on that LJ post--I digest information faster by reading it. I like to scan the dialogue and then concentrate more on the scene. I can do that in Japanese because I'm not fluent, so reading and hearing it all at the same time doesn't confuse me. But trying to do that in English? Ugh, it's not so bad if the closed captioning matches the spoken words exactly, but often actors will improv their lines a little bit to make them sound more natural and the script itself is never changed, so they don't match up and that just bothers me so much.

But I don't mind dubs. Sure, it's not the same as in Japanese. The whole reason behind hating dubs yeeeears ago was because the EDITS were just awful. Not the voice actors--it was pretty much just how they would slaughter most made-for-TV dubs. Cardcaptor Sakura, anyone? Nowadays, since they've started airing anime later (and thus for an older crowd that doesn't need the censorship), most anime gets through fairly in-tact. A few things might be changed to help with localization but it's never anything huge.

I like watching both dubs and subs to compare. :x It's always really interesting to me. With some shows I just wish I could splice the cast--have some of the English voice actors and some of the Japanese ones. XD;

Also, I don't mind the high-pitched quality of some "cute" characters in Japanese. I just can't stand it when their English counterparts try to imitate that. :(

Consider for a moment the example of Code Geass. It's the British Empire, and yet its own citizens seem incapable of speaking their own native language fluently. When you go to Great Britain, do you expect them to speak English, or do you expect them to speak Japanese?

Let's now use a character from Cowboy Bebop. Faye Valentine was born in Singapore, which just so happens to be a former British colony. Would you expect her to sound like Megumi Hayashibara and speak Japanese, or would you expect her to sound like Wendee Lee and speak English?

Discussing the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise in detail will open up a nice can of worms, so I'll just keep it brief. Do you really expect a Russian military officer, a group of pilots from France, Ireland, Kurdistan, and the United States, a Spanish civilian, and an Iranian politician to all speak fluent Japanese?

Here's a neat example of the Word of God concerning Trigun. When asked about the language Nicholas D. Wolfwood spoke, series creator Yasuhiro Nightow said: "It's an English-speaking world, so he's not actually speaking Kansai dialect. Think of it as indicating some accent." Interpret that as you will.

Where are your concepts of "purity" and "realism" now?

Dude we were just stating that we'd rather watch subbed anime than dubbed. anime, you don't have to all out of your way just to prove a point. >>

I'm not saying/nor have I ever said that dubbed anime sucks, it's just that I prefer to watch it in subs rather than dubbed at times, subbed anime is just my preference.
You can like whatever you like. =/

I've just... never liked anything that's been dubbed. Not just anime, but anything. I've watched crappy French dubbed stuff and crappy English dubbed stuff and it's just never appealed to me anyway. :/ I've always loved subtitles, so...

I agree, dubs are phailing these days, well kinda, lucky star trailor is english looks fine ;D I gotta get into that show, anyways, true, Subtitles are better....

But I must say, sometimes Subtitles can keep your eyes off the action, "at times", you know what I mean? though wow, I've never seen any french dub, probably won't ;P
 
Most of the earlier dubbed anime were decent; DBZ, CCS, PKMN (season 1-2) and a few others too, but nowadays there's no passion! No drive! It's all hollow money if you ask me.

But you do get rare gems here and there in recent releases that aren't hugely popular yet but the VAs are exceptional. I had an example but forgot it mid post. =3="

Yeah that is true, old school dub really kicked everything in the right direction, but then things went a bit haywire with select a valuable cast...

And sheesh look at the Pokemon USA dub now, they are in complete chaos, lost their president, and finding great cast members are like needles in hay stacks, seriously USA dub is falling apart in many ways, sad really. :'\
 
Meh, I don't really mind dubbed anime because I never watch the original japanese episodes, so the dubbed voices are normal to me.

But, when it's a case of watching the Simpsons in German, yes, subtitles all the way.
 
You know, I really liked the Pokemon dub, despite it being in 4Kids' hands for eight years or so~ XD;

They should never have switched voice actors.

If it was possible for the anime to get worse, that was when it got worse.
 
Even though I don't watch pokemon as often anymore.
I still think the new voices suck as well. =/
Especially Ash's. >-<
 
New pokemon actor's voices are poo but the Japanese voices are worse IMO :<
Rather hear the new ones
