Basically! I know a lot of 4channers will totally disregard any post that contains XD. They're really were I picked up the sense of it just being something only the lowly folk use...but hey, we still do it!
 
Pfft, XD is a perfectly nice smiley. 4chan is lame.

(◕ ‿‿ ◕) is superior to all, though.
 
Same with me, to be honest... and I don't even post on 4chan. But the "oh god that person is using smilies" stigma has really stuck with me. Not that I pay attention to it. (I would've put smilies in this actual post but now I'm fully conscious to the fact that I would be overusing them and... and I haven't.)

The ones I overuse the most now [simple :) and :(] are probably the most "acceptable" which is why I'm so used to using them above others these days.
 
Expressing my opinion on 4chan would break pretty much every language and civility rule in place at PC, so needless to say that if they hate it, it just makes me want to XD all the more.

OK... on topic again, 4chan is an unusual place. I think I went on /b/ for about 30 seconds and saw 3 porn request photos, 10 cat photos, and 2 combining the two... weird!

That's basically how I used to feel about 4chan and...I still don't like it very much, but I mostly browse /m/ because it has a decent amount of tokusatsu discussion. XD;
 
There are some nice places on 4chan. I came across a lot of good images of their recipes on the cooking channel.

I'm unfamilliar with most of the boards (I'm really only ever in /v/ if I'm lurking). My mind auto-filled in "men" and I was gonna be like "WHOA OK TMI" until I read the rest of your post.
 
Let's all buck the trend of 4chan dictating all internet memes in the past few years and go back to speaking in 1337.

I stopped going to 4chan long, LONG ago. If I want to just look at pictures, I can always go to Danbooru, 3Dbooru, Gelbooru, Sankaku Channel, or any of the other dedicated image collection services. On the few occasions when I want to actually read discussions, there are archival services for that, like sup/tg/.

4chan is the sewer of the internet. It's much better for all the crap to go there than to just float around everywhere.

That being said, I actually enjoyed lurking /a/. Helped me to solidify my beliefs. I don't have time to lurk and be spoiled since I actually want to do things, so I haven't visited 4chan's discussion boards at all in like 2 months.
