Excuse me for my ignorance, but what is kijiji?
This is the first I've heard of it, and it just sounds like another craigslist.

And apparently, Nijinsky is a word on my computer >__>
I need to check dictionary for that word.

I get the feeling that young people don't know what the Rosetta Stone was >>;

STUDY YOUR HISTORY.

I was thinking the same thing. XD;

And buying online rocks. @__@ I was just able to start making online purchases and I <3 it. :D

The Rosetta stone was used to Translate Egyptian. It is stupid when they have it for things as simple as French and Spanish.
Online rocks, until you actually get rocks. This kid made his mom buy a dslite and inside was rocks.

I don't mind buying things from trusted retailers like Amazon online... It's how I bought this laptop actually.

For my netbook I went straight from HP though. (btw Luck: w00t for cherrim)

I will admit I didn't know that Rosetta Stone was supposed to be anything until you mentioned it now. :( They don't teach that kind of thing in schools.

Owned. XD;

I'm looking at Digimon collectibles right now on ebay. (b'-')b

Hey, I own 'Davinci Inc', take that back.

And Lightning... I hate to say that's a reflection of Canadian schools, but... ;p

We learn some basic ancient civilization things in elementary school but honestly? I did a lot of research on Ancient Egypt because it really interested me when I was younger. o_O Either the Rosetta Stone was never interesting enough for me to memorize the name and origin or else it's just... I dunno, not something that typically comes up.

Haha, doesn't help that it sounds like someone's name so I just always assumed it "Rosetta Stone" was just whoever founded the company that makes those programs.

When you take a perfectly normal cultural phenomenon's noun (such as a famous person, place or thing), to me, it hurts the original meaning...

Even Google does that... Type anything that you want to research, and almost always, you will get wikipedia first. Not to mention that if you wanted to look up 'Morpheus', the Greek God of Dreams, you get Morpheus from the Matrix...

Some are more severe than others... and I just fine the language program to be an obvious affront to the original meaning.

This is especially so when the company or copied item(s) is getting money or some other form of payment because of its business...

(Amazon Rain forest vs. Amazon the online book store as another example).

Now if Davinci Inc. was a company that devoted itself to lets say the histories and benfits of said named person, and perhaps even donated to the Paris Museum in France (where i believe a number of his items are held, or was that Italy? XD) then I'd have no problem with that... It's kind of like the idea of 'paying for the rights to the name'.

Eh, I think paying homage to previous historical figures/concepts/objects is fine. It's unfortunate when said company turns out to be utterly corrupt or releases products that disgrace its namesake, but what can ya do huh?

I'm a year ahead in History, and I know full well what the Rosetta Stone is. Feign, isn't it a bit OTT to suggest they shouldn't be able to use it, though? I mean, that's what it was, so why not name a modern version after it as a tribute?

*just confused* what is OTT and who shouldn't use what? (a few possibilities here).

OTT: 'over the top'

I think they were just making a point that we can't always preserve historical references, they're gonna get used in reference to other things at some point.

edit: as a birthday present I request the 45sec post limit be reduced to 30 :( or less. if you love me.

Sorta. My point is, Feign, that you compare it to naming your company God, Jesus, da Vinci, or something, in that it's disrespectful(?) I prefer to see it as the company or whatever paying homage to the original, ie they're honoring the Rosetta Stone by calling their program that.

Hmm okay.

I can see the inevitability of such occuring more in movies and medias, but I wouldn't want to see it in company names.

Ah okay, I see.

Would it seem analagous (is that the right word? It's a bit late FF says it's spelt wrong though XD) though that while it may be paying homage it is conversely taking advantage of the knowledge of the original item, to its marketing advantage?

Define honoring.
I personally feel that it is just a piece of crap that pales in comparison to a college tutor or the like. The Rosetta Stone can be for cheapos I guess :\
