I'd say that's properly representing all french speaking countries/provinces.

Hmm. I see. Wide experience is a bit more acceptable than a narrow experience, but still if there were poll numbers, it'd be rock solid ;)
 
All I can think of is that there wasn't an obvious presentation in the Opening Ceremony to represent Quebec. Which is true, but Ontario didn't get anything either. I dunno. :/

And lol, polls? You think they'll actually go out and poll people "DO YOU LIKE QUEBEC?" or "Is every francophone a jerk, y/n?" It's a bit hard to get information like that by any way but word of mouth from those who've seen it.
 
I think this is one of those debates where I agree with some points on both sides, and end up staying on the fence for all eternity. :/

On one hand, there are some people who believe they will never have to use it, so they don't try. Perhaps someone who plans to move to the U.S., or someone who is planning to go into a line of work where customer service is not a requirement. Furthermore, while 190 million is a big number, it's not as big as the 500 million who speak Spanish, the 300 million who speak Russian, or the 1.3 billion who speak a Chinese dialect. Some people may prefer to learn these instead. :/

And on the other hand, it is one of Canada's official languages, and we should try to respect French culture not as something foreign, but as part of our own national identity. I agree that one should know at least some basic French to work with people, especially in eastern Ontario. I doubt you could find someone around here who hasn't had to converse in French at least once, heh. And if someone is willing to learn Russian or Chinese, how hard is it to take on Français as well? XD

That's what I get for being on the fence: cancelling out my own points. XD

I'm just a fan of hard information which can't easily be disputed. That's just how I am...It's a debater instinct I suppose. x3
 
Well, I don't think you'll ever find hard numbers on that unless it were very, very politely worded and even then it wouldn't be exactly what we're talking about here. :'(

That's pretty much where I stand on the matter, too.

I just like watching the ON vs QC thing play out all the time. :( If it were possible to ship provinces, I'd ship those two. So hard. *weird*

Yup, a typical anglophone who spent ten years of my life studying the French language. So glad I did so that people like you could lump me in with the people who didn't want to take the time. It's hardheaded people like you that will see to it that nothing ever changes, because with all of your stupid revolts, you become even harder to take seriously.
 
They didn't want any French performers; the one French performer that was at the Olympics had to fight for weeks to hold his spot. If it hadn't been for that, there'd have been absolutely no French performers - just English.

The National Anthem of Canada was changed to 1/2 French, 1/2 English, and the Olympics only sang it in English.

The translations were fine when watching, but apparently there wasn't enough French support for such a huge event, which is unfortunate - 'wouldn't have happened if B.C. learnt French passed, what? Grade 6? o0"

What's annoying is when people make stereotypes and try to enforce it because they've had bad experiences. While it's perfectly acceptable to let your experiences guide your own actions, it's also wise to avoid making knee-jerk reactions to people disliking your viewpoints on things.

I have my own head-canon for something like that, omg. :( Ontario and Quebec are secretly in love but would never admit it because they've been fighting for hundreds of years. They wouldn't know what to do without each other.

Manitoba thinks it's BFFs with Ontario when really, ON won't give it the time of day.

Saskatchewan is a post-op tranny because it used to be a masculin province in French and now it's feminine. She gets along with pretty much everyone.

Alberta's the brat that has a superiority complex to match Ontario's. Thinks it would be better off as its own country but is too scared to vote on something like that in case it actually happens.

BC is just high. 24/7. Like absolutely baked.

And the Maritimes are... idk, the Maritimes. They're pretty chill and get along with everyone.

'Cept Newfoundland. Everyone's embarrassed to be seen with NFLD. :(

Ugh, it's been so long since I talked about this with my friend. I can't really remember any details about the territories. I think they tend to keep to themselves but they make fun of Ontario whenever it whines about the cold. Because Ontario will whine if it goes under -10 C when, really, that's not so bad. XD;

I need to bug my friend to see if he remembers more about them. :(

edit: Lmao I could never write a fanfic, guys. :( I don't know my Canadian history well enough anymore. I guess I could try current events or something but idk. Too lazy.

And if no on revolts, where would that lead us? Would that be better? The English sure aren't thinking for us lol If you did happen to spend 10y learning French, then bravo to you, kudos, chapeau even, but most of the other Canadians, specifically the West, don't give to craps. Without riots and revolts, we'd be an English province by now.

There are French people in other provinces; you just don't notice them because they speak English with you guys :\ And perhaps some of them don't speak English and they don't want to put up with people who won't understand them because they don't try.

Also, the baseless assumption of us thinking French is superior and that trying to support and preserve a culture is egotistical. This makes you a typical anglophone because it insinuates that you don't give two crikes about the culture itself and it can be smothered; you don't care, it's just French.

As said, most people can't even order a pizza. Some "basic understanding", eh? You learn French from grade 4-6 in Western provinces; you know what that curriculum is? Learning how to say "I need to pee" and "Please / Thank-you". You don't learn Past Tense or Future Sense, even Conditional ("would"). Nothing. You just learn to say you need to go tinkle. Basic understanding? Hardly.

There is a need to learn it because it is an official language, and just by being an official language, it deserves to be taught hardcore, regardless where you live in the country. It's because it's not taught that we have narrow-minded fools from the rest of the country forcing English on the Quebecois there, and we rarely force French on you orally. We just ask for it to be taught in school, which is a reasonable thing, whether you travel to a French-speaking country / province or not, since we learn English, which is NOT a superior language either.
