NONE, absolutely NONE of my teams have strategy. Really, I like heavy offense the most, because with stall matches tend to be very long, or in smogon's case, 1337 page long warstory. Most of my strategy is brute force and not using bulky pokemon.I'll be honest... I've been playing since Red, and I never once tried to make a strategic team...
I really just collect my favorites, take the time to level them to 100, give them the moves I think fit best, and that's it. I don't use Shedinja or Yanma whatever because I don't like them.
I use Arcanine because he's awesome. I use Haunter over Gengar because I like Haunter. I'm just weird I guess.

Well, I suppose not that weird. I don't tie people to rusty beds.

I almost always use my favorites shall it be in the appropriate tier. I choose Gardevoir > Espeon, gardy has better support movepool and nice bulk. It also isn't skuntank bait with WoW. Lately I run the most gimmiky set ever (salac @ sub / split / shadow ball / hp fighting) that doesn't outspeed base 125's after salac (one point =[). I love gimmicky sets (I don't resort to them though, usually I just mess around with my teams. My first team that I mentioned earlier with gengar, drugtrio, latias and salamence didn't even have stealth rock.) and stuff like that. My UU team is built by only pokes I like (well at least the main two that cause most of the damage) being Absol and Feraligatr.
I use Absol because she's (my own absol's gender, at least) a beast. I also like Haunter more than Gengar!
