The Nintendo DSi Discussion Thread

So will it keep It's touch screen features and dual screen?

I also love the idea of music playback, it means the DS will just be as useful as a Psp.

Of course it will, if it they didn't keep it... Then it's not called DS, silly!
But remember there will be NO GBA slot.

According to Nikkei.net, the website of Japan's leading business newspaper, a new Nintendo DS model is in the works. The new model will sport a built-in digital camera, music playback capabilities, and improved wireless functionality (these are not its only new features; these are all that are known right now).
In regard to the improved wireless functionality, the article reports that the new model will be used as an information terminal. This probably means the DS will feature internet access and a built-in web browser (like with the iPhone and new iPods), though this would definitely require larger screens on the new model's part. Nintendo released a web browser cartridge a while ago that allowed the DS to act as a web browser when in Wi-Fi range. Could that have been a precursor to having internet on the new DS model? After all, FireRed and LeafGreen were packaged with wireless adapters that allowed for wireless communication on the GameBoy Advance, and now we have wireless communication for the DS.
From what the article reports on music playback, it indirectly appears like the new model will support some sort of memory storage. It could feature a built-in hard drive, since the article does briefly mention that the new DS can somehow record music from CDs. Another possibility is that it will support memory card usage, such as SD cards you store music on.
It is not known if any future games will make use of the new built-in camera. It is probably unlikely, since such games would not be able to use a camera on the previous two DS models.
Nikkei Newspaper also speculates Nintendo has added the aforementioned multimedia features to compete against other consumer electronics, such as cell phones (and probably the iPod, PSP, and digital cameras). If Nintendo can package a gaming system with the internet, an iPod, and a digital camera (which has not been done yet), then they are definitely creating a competitive product. The new DS is set to be released in Japan later this year, but a United States release is not planned at this time.

From pokebeach! If this is true then ill be doing backflips all day long

If that's true, then...

Boys, you have some competition!

it should have two DS slot ports, that way for pokemon and some other games you could have your opkemon from diamond transfered to your pearl.

I don't think it's true. I mean sure maybe a few years down the road... But right now Nintendo is making a KILLING off the DS. They won't drop the DS and make a DS2 when it's doing so well right now.
I'd believe this more if it was a new GameBoy (Nintendo said time and time again that the DS isn't a GameBoy)... but a DS2... nah.

Except then they'd miss out on the chance to make you or a friend buy another DS in addition to the first just to do the trade. :]

I posted this a page back and it was at the end! So im posting it this page. Im doing a short version cause this was copied directly from pokebeach.com
It has a camera,mp3 capabilities, and wifi capabilities are stronger. So it can probably be used as an internet browser 2. So if you mix all that up and combine the fact that its due to be released for the end of the year apple is mostly goin to go bye bye as a ds killer in the game market.

I deleted your post the other day--we don't need to see this twice. Anyone interested enough will read it on the first page so unless you have something ELSE to contribute in addition, there's no need to post it again. :|

No way.... there is no way it's going to have a build in cam... or an HDD. I just don't see that.... not on an Nintendo handheld....
I agree, because Nintendo's market is only for games. It's October 2 in Japan now. We'll see if the rumors are true...

I won't be buying in. It's nothing major. And not the successor to the DS. Just a redesign. Not the DS 2. It's a DS with extra stuff. It doesn't play GBA games, but it plays DSi games which I don't think is a big deal.

This is like if instead of Nintendo released the Game Boy Camera accessory back when, that instead they literally released a Game Boy Camera - a new system. And all it did was continue to play the existing games plus the five that came out and specifically made use of the camera.

No big deal. Not a new system. It does some neat stuff like apps and things. But that doesn't qualify a new system in my book. Same amount of colours and the same resolution. Literally a DS with a camera.

Thank you, DeathlyHallows, we've only been talking about it for most of the page and we've already been linked to Serebii. 9_9

Anyway, I think it's stupid. Maybe I'm just completely disillusioned to Nintendo now, but unless this has some really awesome games that can't be played on the DS/Lite, I don't see the point. I already have a digital camera and I find that photo editing thing to be very gimmicky. If I'm doing portable web browsing, I almost expect the PSP to be able to do it better. (The PS3's web browsing is SO MUCH BETTER than the Wii's, after all, and they didn't even try to hype it up like Wii did.) I have an iPod which can hold and listen to far more music than the DS will be able to, and again, I find the sound editing things to be rather lame. And don't even get me started on the name. I REALLY want them to change it for the US market but I don't think they will. I'm so sick of lowercase I's. So. Sick.

We don't even get this until next year, but oh well. I really have no plans to buy it anyway. :/

The only thing from that conference that excites me is the announcement of the new Tales title for Wii. ♥

The only part of this that is really worth writing home for IMO is the "DSiWare" news. Serebii speculated that we could be looking at Gameboy VC titles, and I tend to second that thought. Think about it, we have three prices: 200, 500, and 800 (and 0, but that's not important here). 200 for classic Game Boy, 500 for GBC, and 800 for some GBA, perhaps? If that actually happens, then we could even be seeing the old Pokemon games revived here, since it could connect to D/P/P from inside the same system. They would just have to edit the old games to be compatible, sort of like what they did with Pokemon Snap on the Virtual Console.

...Egh, that didn't come out right. I guess I'll have to translate later.
