Eelektrik was designed by Mr. Ohmura. What inspired him was he caught an eel and he said it was disgusting. I def think that translated to this design.

The mid stage feels like Dex filler to me.
The line could've easily gone from Tynamo to Eelektross.

I remember being very disappointed when my cute Tynamo finally evolved and it became this abomination.

It makes sense to me that Eelektrik is the middle stage because it's meant to be an evolution of the strong eel's lifecycle. Tynamo is supposed to be the what the eels are like in baby form, Eelektrik is that eel, and Eelektross is the final form of that strong eel.

Was like 'oh right, Tynamo, yay!'.
And then I remembered the evolutions 🤢
