This pokemon is one of the few that don't take forever to evolve in gen 5. Iirc you find cubchoo around level 25. That's a plus in my book.

Swift swim is a very odd choice for an ability but it makes sense given that slush rush didn't exist yet. It's like Game Freak knew ice types needed a speed boosting ability yet still didn't commit to it.

It has slush rush now though as a primary ability and the snow is especially good for Beartic because it never had bad bulk, and with the revamp of the weather it has a Defense boost now onto of it's double speed.

Cryogonal is a very odd pokemon. It's fast, but aside of its speed its highest stat is sp. def at 135. Meanwhile its phys. def. in gen 5 was 30. That's... horrible.

It wasn't ever a favorite ice pokemon of mine, but i used to think of it as kinda pretty in an abstract way like Starmie. Snow is generally thought of as something beautiful, soothing and magical... but then I realized that this snowflake is actually a carnivorous and aggressive creature that hunts in merciless ways according to the pokedex entries, doing things like using it's ice chains to freeze those who encounter it, and taking them away to torture or devour.
As I looked more closely at it's face I began to see this angry and sinister expression staring out of the darkness, and decided I don't like cryogonal.

Cryogonal did receive a buff to its defense stat. Now it's at 50 with Base 80 HP. With hail that can double it to 100 base defense which isn't bad, but you can't always rely on weather in the later gens. Especially when starting gen 6 weather lasts 5 to 8 turns. It's better to use Abomasnow
