Is Liquid Crystal allowed to take place of regular Crystal? I hate Gen 2 graphics.

I'll give this a try. Figure I'll start with the first era, and if all goes well, I'll continue on to the other ones.

I started my Jurassic Jam challenge on my eshop copy of Red yesterday. I'm one badge in so far (just beat Brock). Started with Charmander, which just evolved into Charmeleon after the battle. I've only found one Poke Ball so far, so I haven't had a chance to flesh out my team at all yet. I need to figure out if there's another good source of non-mart Poke Balls. I had forgotten that Oak's Aide apparently doesn't give you any Poke Balls to start out with in this game.

Re: the no-marts rule, does that apply to the Magikarp for sale near Mt. Moon?

Also, you said we could buy Poke Balls to catch HM slaves if we get stuck. What about to flesh out my team so I don't get stuck doing a solo run if I end up running out of Poke Balls?

Well, I suppose I could consider the magikarp sale a trade with some bystander. And you can buy pokeballs to flesh out your team but you should set yourself a reasonable limit on those. And that only applies to Gen 1 since you don't get any pokeballs from the aide.

For now, I haven't grabbed the Magikarp, but I'm still in Mt. Moon, so I may or may not go back. Or if I can find enough Poke Balls (or buy a couple extra), maybe I'll fish one up later. If I do further challenges beyond Jurassic Jam on Red, I'll definitely need to think about how best to allocate my Poke Balls.

On a positive note, I managed to successfully expand my team using my one remaining Poke Ball! I caught a Paras in Mt. Moon, who I'm now training up alongside Charmeleon. I think I saved somewhere inside Mt. Moon (I play before bed to help me fall asleep, so I was tired and don't quite recall). Next up: fossil selection (which doesn't require any Poke Balls)! I'm leaning towards Helix at this point, as I don't think I've ever used Omastar on my team before. And I think there is a hidden Great Ball somewhere on Route 4, so I'll need to hunt that down as well.

Aside from the Poke Ball issue, the lack of store-bought items hasn't really bothered me so far. We'll see if it becomes more of an issue as I proceed. But it's a fun challenge so far, and there's something about playing it on an actual system that makes me feel more attached to my team (though training is going to be slow without a speed-up button).

Update: Made it to Cerulean. Picked the Helix Fossil along the way. Didn't pick up the Magikarp for now; not sure what my final team will be yet. I just beat Misty, and my Paras evolved into Parasect.

    The team:
    Charmeleon
    Parasect
Both around level 25 (I'll check later)

Next update: I made my way to Vermillion City, boarded the SS Anne, defeated all of the trainers, picked up some items (including a Great Ball), defeated my rival, and obtained Cut. Next, I need to decide who to teach Cut to. Then, onward to the exciting trash can puzzle of the Vermillion City Gym! (It hasn't been too bad of late, but when I first tried to do it in Red, I had terrible luck, and saving and resetting between picking the locks didn't seem to help at all.)

The team: Still just Charmeleon and Parasect, level 29. Debating who member #3 should be.

I'm through Rock Tunnel now on my Jurassic Jam challenge. Things are going somewhat slowly, but I don't have a ton of time to play, so I guess that is what it is. Charmeleon and Parasect are both at level 34, and their movesets are improving (Charmeleon knows Slash now, while Parasect has learned Spore).

Rock Tunnel was somewhat challenging, because we still don't have any decent moves to deal with rock types. Just fire, bug, and normal so far. I'm looking forward to fleshing out my movesets a bit more later on, especially once I've filled out my team a bit more. I'm hoping to add another member to my team soon, perhaps a water type.

Edit: Another update. I've passed through Rock Tunnel, earned my fourth gym badge, and cleared the Rocket Hideout in the casino (which I decided not to skip) and Pokemon Tower. I'm tackling Silph Co next. After much consideration, I also settled on a third member for my team: Magikarp! I first thought about adding one back at Mt. Moon, but ultimately caught one with an Old Rod near Lavender Town. Right now, I'm leveling it up from level 5. It just learned Tackle, so it only has a little ways to go before it evolves and becomes useful! Aside from that, Charmeleon evolved into Charizard, and Parasect finally learned Slash.

    The team:
    Charizard level 42
    Parasect level 41
    Magikarp level 15

For the other slots, I'm still deciding, but I'm thinking about Flareon (since I could use another fire type, and I'm out of Pokeballs obtained from places other than Marts), Omastar (my fossil), and either Aerodactyl (my other fossil; I assume it would be fine, even though its types aren't listed, because it would fall under the fossil rule?) or something else, perhaps a bug type like Scyther.

Another update: I've cleared Silph Co., and will soon head to Fuchsia (after beating Sabrina). Magikarp has come into its own as Gyarados, and is quickly becoming an asset to the team (though it still needs some moveset help). I need to start thinking about how best to use some of the TMs that I've collected to make my team a bit better. Still debating whether to pick up an Eevee and add Flareon to my team before moving on or not.

    The team:
    Charizard level 43
    Parasect level 43
    Gyarados level 33

Almost done! I've earned the rest of the gym leaders, so now it's onward to the Victory Road and the Elite Four for the conclusion of my Jurassic Jam.

Since last time, I've picked up my fossils, trained up Omastar (Aerodactyl, my second fossil, is still a work in progress), and acquired a Growlithe. I realized that Flareon, my previous plan, sadly wouldn't work because I couldn't evolve it (since there's nowhere to find a Fire Stone outside of the Celadon City Dept Store). Admittedly, Growlithe won't be able to evolve either at this rate (for whatever reason, I didn't think of that until after I started training it), but at least it's a fire type, and it's not something I've used recently.

And, I beat the Elite Four! Done with Jurassic Jam!

The team (levels approximate because I don't have the game in front of me right now):
    Charizard lvl 48
    Gyarados lvl 50
    Parasect lvl 47
    Omastar lvl 44
    Aerodactyl lvl 40
    Growlithe lvl 36

Now that I'm done, I'm trying to level them up a bit more for fun, but they all played some role. (Well, I'm not sure Growlithe did anything all that useful, but I think I sent it out once vs. the Elite Four.)

I think I may do another one of these next. Probably the next one in the sequence (Ice Age) on either Red or Blue.
