Theme Discussion

  • So, we have not officialised a theme or anything yet. So it's probably a good idea to have a thread to properly record everyone's thoughts and ideas.

Currently, the front runner idea seems to be Chura's "Pokemon Crossing" idea. I suggested we make that competitive by having two (Fletch suggests 3-4 might be more fun) teams compete to build the best village/town by collecting points (bells) through events with certain point thresholds adding/upgrading more buildings. We've also thrown about the dea of visually representing the towns by making pokemon-style maps.

In the original thread, doing things more focused on the upcoming SwSh expansion or the PMD remake were also suggested but we haven't rally expanded on those ideas at this time since this picked up so much momentum.

Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions? All that good stuff.

  • I'm okay with the theme. I think 2 teams would be better, since in 2018, it ended up with 2 teams competing with each other while the other 2 were just there (Fini is best, btw). But I don't like the idea of collecting bells. I think points should be represented by something more Pokémon-ish... Maybe Pokémon Coins? It would make more sense for building the town.

We could use those css meters for points from last year after a small re-design. It would be cool if someone could make maps.

  • Poke over bells is fine with me tbh.

I think, assuming we do work with a threshold system, having two teams makes more sense since it would mean less points being divided so more thresholds could be easily reached.

  • Great, so what would the team's names would be? Some of my suggestions:
    Snom and Pincurchin
    Zacian and Zamazenta
Single Strike Dojo and Rapid Strike Dojo
    Crown and Armor

    What do you think?

  • Poke +1; for the coins specifically since gp said building a town and stuff, maybe the players could use it as a bank and buy buildings on their own via poke (so the meter would increase/decrease on it's own). points would be counted on the last day on what the town achieved (building upgrades, etc)

i kinda wanna suggest (pokemon) villagers too as rewards so it would be unique per team and they have fun with it

I feel like this method is way cooler in theory, but that it will be much harder to manage in practice.

I think it would be more rewarding if users would see how their town is growing up during the event. But I think points could be counted like once per day at the specific time?

EDIT: Don't mind me, I read it wrong.

  • more summarizing

points are not spent on buildings, but are used to acquire buildings through various milestones. some milestones give the team a choice from multiple buildings and/or where to place them around the town. choices are made in the team's discord channel (or DCC if we're doing team DCCs?) via speed-voting and conducted by GT managers who are on that team.

as for the towns themselves, we could do graphics for the settings and all the buildings, resources permitting, and even make a simple interface that lets us move things around and display a timelapse of each town at the end. i have to look into the dev parts of that before i can make concrete promises but it should be possible.

we could also tie some events into specific buildings but i'm not sure how

Maybe have buildings unlock bonuses for events? Either bonus points (like a 1.5x modifier or something) or bonus tasks that participants can do to get bonus points.

i.e. for a Challenge event, it could be you get 2 points for completing the game, if you have the building associated with Challenges you could get 3 points, or do a task (say, a monotype run, or clearing it with a specific Pokemon) and get bonus points on top of the points you get for completing the game. Means events aren't locked behind buildings and there is a point to getting them.

I like the idea of having Pokemon as villagers, but maybe that could be something for individual participants instead of the village as a whole? If this is PMD themed part of the sign-up process could be completing a personality quiz like in PMD games and being assigned a starter based on answers...although that may aggravate a few people if they get a result they don't like, so perhaps not. Might be a fun little mechanic to have though! Maybe either give people the choice of having the quiz or earning a certain amount of points before they can choose their own Pokemon representative for the village.

  • I like the idea of using Poke to unlock buildings if we're going to go with the "Pokemon Crossing" Theme and giving those teams the ability to put those buildings where they want their map similar to how you would in AC. As for team names I'd like something more to do with the new characters we have being introduced in the new DLC, Avery and Klara.

We could make Avery and Klara the names of the towns.

I like the idea of having the teams name their towns, makes things more personal.

I'm not sure we need any link to the SnS DLC in the theme tbh...we could have an event to play through it and keep a diary - perhaps keeping a play journal could be a separate event, with a prize for the best written one too, making it two events in one kinda - but tbh it feels like shoehorning it in for the sake of shoehorning it in. Pokemon Crossing works fine as a theme by itself.

  • something to consider is whether we can easily explain both the theme as well as the rewards to the general public + the event organizers. we want this information to be easily accessible and understood so that the event organizers can quickly grasp it and structure their events around it and so that the general public can have more fun with it.

if we're having trouble with either, perhaps it's worth considering whether we're making things a tad more complicated than they should. not saying that we are or aren't, moreso saying in general. something to be careful of.

  • Okay, since it will be 12th soon, here's the summary from this thread and discord. If I forgot on something, please let me know:

The theme for this year is Pokémon Crossing. Users will be divided into 2 teams (so far it seems like they will be divided by a survey) and they will compete in events to obtain PokéCoins to build a town. When a team reaches certain number of PokéCoins, they will be able to build one building in their town. They will be offered 3 unique buildings to build from each time and they will have 24 hours to decide which one they want through the poll on discord. Both the poll and the offer will be once per day thing at certain time. As for the design of the buildings, it's totally on a designer, but should have Pokémon or AC vibes. There were also talks about some events getting special buildings, so we can expand on that in points thread. And that should be all.
