Depends on the situation. If I'm staying away from home for a long time I usually end up using both.
For daily life you don't need a suitcase though, and often times also not a backpack, but it sometimes is handy at least.

No that just takes me to the latest post, skipping any posts that are in between said latest post and whenever my last time viewing the thread was.
And I tried 'jump to new' a couple times and it took me to late October in those threads, several pages before the last page, with me having made posts after that point.
