I'm refering to Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf. The reason that I ask this question is because of their names. Uxie = Pixie, Mesprit = Sprite, Azelf = Elf. Their names derive from fairy like creatures.

Whoa, I did not notice that before. Probs because I've never liked the lake trio much, especially Mesprit.

Them being Fairy could work. I also think Cresselia and Jirachi should be part Fairy. Those 2 could pull it, and besides, Psychic is a borderline useless typing these days (especially for Cresselia; its a very defensive poke but Psychic offers little defensive advantages).

Though I guess the problem would then be that we'd have a ton of (retconned) Fairies on our hands. People complain about them enough as is.

Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf were a few of the Pokemon that I was expecting to get the Fairy type once we knew some older Pokemon were getting it, so I was shocked when they didn't, seeing as how they were pure Psychic types to begin with. They arguably look more fairy-like than many of the Pokemon that got the typing, and like you pointed out, were even based off of fairy-like creatures.

Also, seeing as how the lake guardians kind of acted as a foil to the creation trio at certain points during the 4th gen games, the addition of the Fairy typing to them would make even more sense, seeing as how Dialga, Palkia and Giratina all carry a secondary Dragon typing.

I wouldn't expect them to suddenly gain a secondary Fairy typing now, but I wouldn't complain if it were to happen.

They haven't been re-typed this gen, but could always be in future. There's a lot of other Pokémon that could be put into this fairy group, including Jirachi and Cresselia mentioned by Salt&PepperDiner, as well as Celebi, Jirachi, and maybe Victini. All these three remind me of fairies, so... yeah. xD;; Would I personally like to have type-change, though? Probably not. Those who have only just a single typing could gain more weaknesses once that happens, and for those who don't, well, their weaknesses and immunity would wind up being altered, having us rethink move-sets and strategies for these Pokémon.

I used to feel like legendaries were more or less untouchables, but after Lati@s and Mewtwo got Megas, that kinda brought down that theory. But yeah I think those type changes could've been made. For Pokemon who aren't competitively overused, I think it'd be a welcome sight.

Uxie, Mesprit, Azelf, Jirachi, Celebi, Cresselia, Victini... all of them were prematurely assigned the psychic type, when they should have been Fairy from the start. I don't know why Game Freak never bothered changing it, but I guess that we're used to them being so, as they're legendaries. Still, they are fairies, right? They deserve the retype.

I think Uxie, Mesprit and Azelf actually did look like something that would have been Fairy-types, but hey people thought the same thing about Celebi, Jirachi and most of the small cute 600 BST Legendaries, probably due to their small size and cute appearance which most Fairy-types had the description of. I'm still okay with their types unchanged for now, they looked more like Psychics to me anyway.

Eh, too many Fairy/Psychics already. TONS of the good ol' Psychic types are being remade as "Psychic and Fairy types."

There's only like, two actual Psychic/Fairy lines right now, the Mr. Mime and Gardevoir lines. However there are several Psychic-types who can learn the Fairy-type TM move Dazzling Gleam.

Thats a good point! I never paid mind to them, but your explanation brings it to light for me! I can see them as dual typing

The reason that I ask this question is because of their names. Uxie = Pixie, Mesprit = Sprite, Azelf = Elf. Their names derive from fairy like creatures.

That's exactly what I was going to say. Their names and appearance just say "Fairy type". I mean, they've become known as the legendary pixies by fans, so why not give them the Fairy typing? They look like they've been waiting for it.

Omg I never noticed that about the names!! :) Although I personally like them as Psychic types, a Fairy move would make sense for all three, especially in the case of Mesprit it looks really fairy-like to me :)

I've always personally found the Lake Guardians to be kind of bland, so if GF had made the trio all part fairy at the outset of when they were introducing the new typing, I would've been completely down with that. Now, however, I'd probably resist it for a battle and pokemon development reasons.

Looking at the spread of Fairy pokemon, I think there are only seven different kinds of fairy dual-types. That being said, adding the trio now, either as pure fairy or fairy-psychic, with their current various statbuilds and movepools would be kind of a shame in the long run.

One of the most exciting things about this new typing is to see how GF will fill out the roster in following generations. If the trio are included now as pure fairy, every new defensive fairy will have to compare to Uxie and all new offensive fairies will have to compare to Azelf (fast/frail) or Mesprit (balanced). It's probably for this reason we don't regularly have normal legends (even then, Arceus should be omitted for godliness and Regigigas for suckyness).

From here on out, to stand out, a new fairy would need to have either a) more polar stats than the trio, b) higher base stats than the trio, c) a more useful ability than Levitate, or d) a useful secondary typing. The mono-Fairy type would pretty much peak as soon as such the switch was made.

Making the trio Psychic-Fairy carries the same pitfalls, though possibly to a more extreme extent as now a Fairy would need to ideally carry a secondary typing better than Psychic, a type which is super-effective against one of the type's only two weaknesses

From a name and theme standpoint, it definitely makes sense to make the Lake Trio part or all Fairy, but from a game standpoint, I hope they stay right where they are

Azelf being one of my favorite Pokemon from the Sinnoh region, I had high hopes that it would become a dual Fairy-type, along with its siblings, Mesprit and Uxie. Although, Pokemon that already have two types like Victini, Celebi, etc. probably won't ever get the Fairy typing. It would make the games a lot more confusing; simply not worth the trouble.

Considering the lake trio all have something to do with small fairytale creatures name-wise (Azelf, Mesprit, Uxie), and are referred to as 'Pixies', I was pretty certain they were going to end up with Fairy typing.

Uh, to my confusion and disappointment, they did not. I'm still not exactly understanding why? Maybe they forgot to add it to them or happened to miss them or something along those lines. Because I can't imagine anyone looking at the lake trio from a logical standpoint and saying, "Yeah, Fairy type wouldn't make sense on these guys". Because of all the Pokemon they could add Fairy type to, they gave it to weird things like Snubbull, and not Pokemon that actually make sense?

I mean I get that Snubbull is the 'Fairy Pokemon', but it still doesn't... eh, whatever.

They really need to consider adding Fairy to the Lake Trio. It'd help make sense out of the whole 'red chain controls the three creation dragons' thing, too. Because they'd have the typing to pull off that sort of thing fairly easily.
