Ultimate Monotype Challenge Thread

Hey guys, got owned by Giovanni (Gym leader)... I hate Earthquake! Any advice on what to do?
Anyone doing an Electric UMC will understand my pain if they played firered

Usually what I do if I get owned by a trainer is level grind a ton until I can take him out. Since Electric types don't have much type coverage, you have to have them at higher levels to keep up. A lot of Giovanni's Pokemon are either poison or rock, so if you still have Dig, you could teach that to someone. Jolteon can also combat the Rock/Ground types with Double Kick. Otherwise, you're just going to have to overlevel and kill everything with like Strength.


In other news, I finished Dark on Crystal with a team of Houndoom (lv. 74 I think) and Sneasel (lv. 67 I think).

Houndoom: Flamethrower, Crunch, Shadow Ball, Hidden Power (Psychic)

@Myrrhman Well again I am playing console not emulator so no speed button for grinding :( Am I correct in saying that in RBY they didn't have Earthquake? God that woulda made my life easier. It's not so much that I can't hurt, its that he knocks me out in a single hit. Most people played RBY instead of FR/LG

EDIT: If I were to level grind, where would I do it?

EDIT2:Finally beat Giovanni! Taught Iron Tail to Sparky. Worked wonders!

• Caught Julius the Bouffalant on Rt. 10.
• Gave him some vitamins and EV trained him to max Attack.
• Went through Victory Road. Thank God for doctors.
• Arrived at the Pokemon League.
• Taught Wild Charge to Julius and Zolata, and Bullet Seed to Lucky (via relearner).
• Took on the Elite Four and beat 'em pretty easily. I had the most trouble with Marshall.
• Caught Reshiram with an Ultra Ball, then beat N. Lucky was the star.

Ultimate Fire Challenge

LeafGreen Final Update
-Made my way through Silph Co.
-Battled my rival once more and left victorious.
-Had to take a break to heal my Pokemon. So, after going to the Pokemon Center and buying a few more potions from the department store, I returned to Silph Co. to take on Giovanni.
-Giovanni gave me a bit of a problem... but I finally defeated him using mostly my trusty Charizard.
-Headed toward Sabrina's gym and defeated her. Using Flareon and Bite, that gym wasn't too much of a problem. There was a small struggle when my Flareon fainted, but Charizard finished the job.
-I had already cleared the bridge (Snorlax included), so I took the bike path to Fushia City.
-Arrived in Fushia, went to the Safari Zone, collected my HM and the gold teeth, then collected the other HM.
-Challenged Koga. He was surprisingly easy to defeat.
-Left Fushia to surf to Cinnabar. ~
-I made my way around the Seafoam Islands and defeated Articuno for the EXP.
-Continued on surfing after exiting until I arrived in Cinnabar.
-Made my way through the Pokemon mansion.
-Challenged Blaine. What an interesting battle this was. I had a bit of a strategy for this. Since Vulpix powers up when hit with fire, I threw her out first. I used Sunny Day so that my fire moves would be powered up and while his were, too- they didn't affect my Vulpix. (mine were ineffective on his Arcanine/Growlithe- but not the point ;D ) Using that strategy, I managed to get through a couple of his Pokemon with not much of a problem. To get through Arcanine and Growlithe, I used my trusty Charizard once more. I took the win. ~
-Did the Sevii islands thing (one, two, three). Caught a Ponyta, but decided not to use it on account of laziness and it being so close to the last gym, anyway. So, I boxed my Ponyta and continued on.
-Returned to Kanto, headed toward Viridian City.
-Giovanni was an interesting gym battle. I had to use a lot of strategy to defeat him (so much that I'm too lazy to share) and I did lose once, but on the second time, I managed to pull a win and collect my badge.
-Headed off toward Victory Road. Battled Rival, continued.
-Made my way through Victory Road, arrived at the Pokemon League.
-I finally evolved Vulpix at this point so that I could have a fully evolved Ninetails.
-I used a few stat boosters (Protein and what not) before entering the Elite Four for preparation.
-Stocked up on Potions and what not, healed, and entered the Elite 4!
-Held my breath.
-Lorelei... ugh, Lorelei. I confess, I used a lot of revives against her. Her Surf knocked my fire Pokemon out repeatedly. But with persistence and dedication (and Sunny Day), I pulled a win.
-Bruno wasn't too hard. Using Charizard, I pulled a win from him. His rock moves killed Charizard a few times, but it was nothing that a few revives didn't help me through.
-Agatha was mostly easy. I just continually used Bite until I pulled the win.
-Lance annoyed the heck out of me. I had gotten so annoyed that I turned the game off and decided to wait until later. His Aerodactyl was killing me. A few days later, I tried again, remembered that Aerodactyl was half rock type so probably weak to steel. I managed to get past him using Steel Wing. Then came Gyarados (predictable), using a strategy of Fly (thus staying up in the air as long as possible), I managed to beat him. The rest of his team was easy. Lance was defeated.
-Moved on to my Rival. This was a bit of a challenge. I struggled against his Blaistoise, but using the same technique I'd used on Lance's Gyarados, I beat him. Then I used the Sunny Day strategy and eventually won.
-I am now the champion.

Some Comments: Carrie's Charizard was a pain to battle when he challenged me outside of the Pokemon League. He was very Fire Blast happy and, if my memory is correct, I defeated him with a combination of OpiumPoppy's Reflect and Mandragora's Wrap. Defeating Carrie's Charizard when he became the champion was MUCH easier. He continually used Fire Spin, which basically had no effect at all, because he was under the effects of Oleander's Leech Seed. Fire Spin did very little damage, even against my Grass-type, so the energy I got at the end of every turn was enough to bring me back to 100% health.

I have begun playing Pokemon Crystal, but I'm starting to think that maybe I should play through SoulSilver. My next update will include what game I've decided to go with.

Started Sapphire for my Steel UMC.

• I went ahead and beat Roxanne with my L15 Treeko.
• Then I caught Juggernaut the Brave Aron in Granite Cave.
• I skipped Brawly for now and went to Slateport.
• Delivered the Devon Goods, then headed to Mauville.
• Beat May along the way, which took a lot of help from Soda Pops.
• Trained Juggernaut to L28, then beat Wattson, mostly with Mud-Slap while using a LOT of Soda Pops.
• Headed north to Fallarbor Town and caught Raptor the Skarmory.
• Did Meteor Falls and beat Archie, then hopped to Lavaridge Town.
• Beat Flannery after Juggernaut evolved into Lairon, using Rock Tomb.
• Made my way back to Slateport, then stopped in Dewford to crush Brawly with Raptor's Air Cutter.
• Back in Petalburg, I beat Norman easily.
• After getting Surf, I took the shortcut from Rt. 103 and headed to Fortree from Mauville.
• Got to Fortree and obtained the Devon Scope, then challenged the gym.
• Winona was difficult because of Altaria and Skarmory, but I pushed through.
• Saved just outside Fortree.

Ultimate Fire Challenge: SoulSilver, Update II

-Challenged Whitney. She was annoying to battle. Her Miltank actually wasn't too much of a problem, save for the fact that she healed herself every other turn. I finally defeated her, though and collected my badge.
-Left Goldenrod.
-I defeated Sudowoodo and continued along my journey.
-After about five minutes of shuffling around in the grass, I finally found a Vulpix and caught him.
-Arrived in Ecruteak.
-Defeated the Rocket Grunt in the dancing studio and received my HM.
-Did the Burned Tower thing.
-Challenged Morty. His Gengar was annoying because Shadow Ball kept knocking my Pokemon out. But I defeated him and collected my badge.
-Heading to Olivine.

Update #5 on Black.

• Well, after the initial postgame stuff, I headed to Rt. 15 and caught Ranger the Kangaskhan.
• Boxed her initially since she was higher than my main team (L59), but she was eventually let out.
• I went around the eastern half of Unova from south to north, switching out my slaves when I needed them.
• Eventually I had explored all the areas. My team was L68-69.
• I then beat Cheren for the final time, as well as Morimoto in the Game Freak building.
• Then I challenged Cynthia. Strangely, I had an easier time against her then the other two (I actually lost once against Cheren, lol, and Morimoto was actually a draw if not for my Woobat), mostly because I got a crit on Spiritomb and Bullet Seed 5 hit Milotic for the pseudo-OHKO. Julius ended things against Garchomp with a SD boosted Head Charge OHKO after Stone Edge missed.
• Anyway, I saved at the Pokemon League.

I am the Kanto Champ! I got past Rhydon by reviving a member every turn, since they kept dying to Earthquake. He ran out of Earthquakes eventually. So, a last look at the team:

• Okay, so I was just about to take on the Elite Four for the second time.
• But first, I had Ranger relearn Fake Out.
• I went in this order: Shauntal (Ghost), Caitlin (Psychic), Grimsley (Dark), and then Marshall (Fighting).
• Man, Marshall took forever, I had to fight him over and over until I found a way to win (as well as avoid misfortune).
• I had taught Bucky Swords Dance before the Grimsley fight, btw (replaced Megahorn).
• I then used my 11 Rare Candies to bring Bucky and Ranger to L72 and Lucky, Julius, and Zolata to L73.
• Took on Alder and won, pretty easily, too. My team was diverse enough with their movesets to take on his mixed team. Also, he had no fighting types :D.

[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]After getting my Pokegear back from the shop, I headed over to the lab to get a Chikorita.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]Received the Pokemon Egg to take back to Elm, and got a strange call from the lab.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]Defeated a mysterious trainer on the way home.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]After being interrogated by the officer, we all agreed his name was Peasant.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]On the way back to Cherygrove, I randomly found a Horsea in the grass. I caught it and named it Maelstrom.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I took a liking to the little guy, so the two of us trained in the grass before taking on the local trainers.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]We arrived in Violet City, and immediately began training in the local Gym. Barely getting past the first two trainers, we decided to train more before attempting to fight the Gym Leader.

[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]Compared to the sages, Falkner was a piece of cake. After the battle, Elm called, wanting me to take the egg.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I received the egg, but wanting to spend more time with Maelstrom, I put its data in a computer for the time being.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I decided to catch a bird like Falkner, appreciating their grace in the air. I found a Pidgey nearby.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]Somebody tried to sell me a Slowpoke for an outrageous sum of money. I refused, and he wasn't too happy about that.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I went through a cave, and soon found myself in Azalea Town.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I helped Kurt drive off Team Rocket from their Well, home to many Slowpoke.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]Peasant was around, so we battled. I easily defeated him.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I heard the town had a Gym, so I went inside. It turned out to be a Bug Gym, and I soon had my second badge.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]To the west was a forest, where I helped a boy find a missing Farfetch'd. I was rewarded with HM01 and a piece of Charcoal.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]Another young man in the forest gave me TM02, which let me Headbutt small trees to find Pokemon. I taught it to Maelstrom.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I quickly found out that it made a marvelous battling move as well. Soon, I was in a large city called Goldenrod.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]Inside Goldenrod, I found a Game Corner, where you could trade coins in for moves and Pokemon. A small, blue Pokemon called Dratini caught my eye. Unfortunately it was way too expensive.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]Hoping I would get enough money in the Gym, I challenged Whitney. When I beat her she started crying, but soon I was the proud owner of the Plainbadge.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I stopped by the Cycle Shop, and the man gave me a free bicycle. Unfortunately, I couldn't sell it for a Dratini. I also got a Squirtbottle from a lady that owned a flower shop. She advised me to squirt it on any trees blocking the path.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I hopped on over to the National Park to win more battles. I could tell I was getting close to that Dratini.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]On the other side of National Park were a few more trainers and a tree, just like the lady said. I squirted it and it attacked! Turns out it was actually a Pokemon.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]A child gave me a Magnet for defeating the Tree Pokemon. I then found myself in Ecruteak City.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I recognized that red hair from a mile away. Peasant was heading into a burned down tower. I followed him and beat him again. He stormed off, again.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I was tipped off that I could get a powerful move if I could beat these five dancers. Sure enough, an old man gave me Surf for putting on such a good show. I taught it to Maelstrom, puzzled by the physics of me standing on an 18 lb. seahorse.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I checked, and I had enough money for Dratini! I hustled back to Goldenrod to pick up my Pokemon. I nicknamed it Typhoon.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I bought another copy of the move that taught Headbutt in the Department Store nearby, which I taught to Typhoon.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I started training both of my Pokemon. Typhoon was hard to train, because it was below the level of most Pokemon it was facing. Maelstrom, on the other hand, was defeating every Pokemon in one hit with its new Surf move, and soon, it evolved into a Seadra!
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I decided that Surf was a move that all of my Pokemon deserved, so Typhoon learned it too!
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]Trained all the way to Olivine, where I found Peasant. This time, he didn't want to fight, he only tipped me off that the Gym Leader wasn't in her Gym.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I went back and trained all the way to Mahogany, taking the caves. That Gym was blocked too.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]Since the only place left to go was the Ecruteak Gym, I challenged Morty. Only using Surf in the entire Gym, I still managed to win. Typhoon took as much as it could, and Maelstrom cleaned up.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]Now being able to use Surf in the field, I went back to Olivine and climbed the lighthouse, where the Gym Leader was rumored to be. She was helping a sick Pokemon, and asked me to go to the pharmacy across the ocean to get some medicine for it. Happy to help, I left for Cianwood.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I got the potion, and then thought "Since I'm already here, I might as well challenge the Gym".
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]Unfortunately, you had to be able to lift a boulder to fight the Gym Leader. A move to let Pokemon able to do this was in Olivine, so I went back across the ocean.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I quickly found the move. Unfortunately, nobody on my team could learn it. I caught a coral Pokemon named Corsola who could.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]Corsola and co. went back across the ocean to finally fight the Gym Leader. His name was Chuck, and he was a master of Fighting Pokemon. Typhoon had a new ability called Dragon Rage, and with it I easily wiped the floor.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]His wife stopped me outside, giving me the HM for Fly, saying that her husband needed to work out more, and as a result, they didn't need this move anymore. I thanked her and taught it to Pidgey.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]The return back to Olivine was much quicker. I ascended the Lighthouse and gave the medicine to Jasmine, who gave it to Ampharos.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]She returned to the Gym, where I could battle her. But, I wanted to train some first. See, I could plainly see that Typhoon was a lot larger than when I got him, so I figured he was about to evolve.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]Sure enough, he evolved into a Dragonair while exploring around the ocean.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]Satisfied, I challenged Jasmine. Typhoon barely hung on by the skin of his teeth and defeated her final Pokemon, earning me the Mineral Badge.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]Heard a rumor about rampaging Dragon. Curious, I went to investigate the Lake of Rage.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]Defeated the shiny red Gyarados, and then saw a man named Lance who wanted me to help him bring Team Rocket down.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I got lost in a maze of trees that ultimately put me at a house, where a man gave me a TM that "awakened my hidden power".
(Side Note: At this point, I used savestates to test Hidden Power types. Dragonair has a Ground Type, while Seadra has a Rock Type. I don't really like either of those as much as I liked the movesets I had planned, so no HP today.)
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]I entered a mysterious building in Mahogany to find Lance attacking a man with his Dragonite. He uncovered a secret staircase, and we descended.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]An alarm sounded, and two grunts came charging towards me, ready to fight. Typhoon made quick work of them.
[FONT=&quot]ò [/FONT]Beat, I decided to call it a night. Not quite as far as I had hoped to get tonight, but it'll do. I'll finish up tomorrow.
